Nuvem and a CONTEST!

Nuvem-Wollmeise-Lace-Spice-MarketIf you read last week’s blog post, you know I’m in Germany this week, visiting Claudia (the Wollmeise). Last fall, Claudia and her friend Maria came to visit me, and we had a great time knitting, shopping, and hanging out. Usually, Claudia comes for the Spring Fling each year and we are so busy that we don’t get enough time to just sit and knit and chat. So it was fun to have her here during a non-Spring Fling time. (And it’s fun being with her here in Germany this week!) One thing that happened last fall when Claudia and Maria were here? I was bitten by the Nuvem bug. They both got off the plane wearing these beautiful scarf/wrap creations and I was immediately interested. Even MORE so when I tried it on. The Nuvem is knit with about 1700 yards of lace, making it really lightweight, but at the same time, really warm. I wanted to start one immediately.

Nuvem-Wollmeise-Lace-Spice-MarketSo, I jumped right in using a skein of Spice Market. (It had been caked up to be a sweater, but you know my history with sweaters, up to this point.) The Nuvem pattern requires a lot (a LOT) of knitting around and around. But I really don’t mind that kind of knitting. You don’t have to think about it. One row is knit around. The second row is knit around, plus making about 12 increases along the way. That’s it! See how the ends flare out a little? That’s where you do the increases. (The true color is shown in the second photo.) And I liked working on it so much, that I started a second one while the first one was soaking in the wash, getting ready for a blocking. I thought it would be great knitting on the plane and in Germany. I did make some changes when I knit it. I made it longer (I cast on 230 stitches to begin with), I made it a little narrower (I think about 22 inches across), and I did 9 rows on the ruffle instead of 6.

So here’s the thing. I had caked up two skeins of Spice Market Lace when I thought I was making a sweater out of them (knitting it holding two strands together.) Since I changed my mind, I used one cake for my Nuvem and I have another Spice Market all caked up, ready to give to someone else. Would you like it? Leave a comment below telling me about your adventures in knitting lace (Have you knit a lace scarf or wrap before? Would you do it again? Have you made a Nuvem? Or would this be your first time on a lace project?). I’ll draw a number next week and will let you know who wins the big, beautiful cake of Spice Market Lace.

  1. I’ve never actually completed a lace project, though I’ve attempted a few.

That is absolutely gorgeous. Would love to have on in my closet.

  2. I’ve knit a Wendy Johnson mystery shawl in lace weight and loved that! Couldn’t wait for the next clue to come out. Would like to make a Nuvum soon. Bringing some yarn back with you?

  3. I just bought so verrrry yummy bright and happy lace weight yarn and I can’t wait to do my first lacy shawl. I’m a lil nervous about it but I figure if I can survive stage 3 cancer and 15 surgeries in under 3 years I can knit anything lol.
    Happy Stitches,
    Eia

  4. Lace knitting is addictive! Especially with beads. At first I wondered if I’d ever understand it the way I did Aran cabled things. It took a while, but so glad I took the plunge, dozens of shawls ago!

  5. I love lace knitting. I cast on Nuvem a couple weeks ago and love the easy knitting. Great for TV knitting and a nice break from other projects. I switched to a kfb increase and wonder if I shouldn’t have stuck with the original. Also trying to figure out if I can switch to a single circular and how long it would need to be.

I’ve never tried Wollmeise and would love to have some. I’d happily turn it into another Nuvem. Warm wraps are always good in my books.

  6. I have knit lace but not for quite some time. Love the Nuvem and adore the Spice Market colorway. What a great Fall color! Have fun in Germany!!

  7. I love knitting lace, and knitted up an Alhambra in Dream in Color Baby “Ruby River” for a Loopy Ewe secret pal swap — most complicated pattern I’d ever attempted, since there’s patterning/lace work on both sides, but I was so happy with the finished product. Come to think of it, all my finished lace projects have been gifts for other people, which reminds me that I need to cast on for an Arroyo for my MIL’s November birthday.

  8. I’m a lace addict and have made several shawlettes. I’d like to make a really large shawl and try a skein of Wollmeise lace so I’m hoping you draw my number:)

  9. Love the Spice Market colorway! Don’t know if I’d knit a Nuvem since I tend to knit shawls that aren’t a rectangle but love lace patterns and yarn.

  10. Your shawl is beautiful. I love to knit shawls. All have been in fingering weight. I would love to give lace weight a go and these colors are gorgeous.

  11. I havent knit a Nuvem yet. I have used lace twice though! I really don’t mind using it at all. Just a bit thinner than fingering but still beautiful! Hope you are having a great time in Germany!!!

  12. My first lace project was a shawl with beads. I didn’t think I would like knitting lace but I loved it!!! Spice Market is beautiful!!!

  13. Sheri, you have such generous spirit. You so generously gave me some wonderful guidance in the shop last week, and I so appreciated it. Now here you are offering this splendid yarn to lucky person. I hope you enjoyed spending time with Claudia and all of that wonderful yarn. Come good home!

  14. I just started my lace adventure. The Nuvem interests me a lot. So far I did the upstairs wrap for camp, and one lace shawl.

  15. I’ve seen a few Nuvems recently, and while I think they are gorgeous, it is one pattern that I have NO desire to make. I’m okay with the idea of knitting 1700 yards of lace weight (skein please :)!) but not in stockinette for some reason.

  16. I started a triangle-shaped shawl with lace yarn on 4’s, but it took a bit of fiddling at the ends to get the yarn-overs at the ends even (or something that will look even after blocking). So maybe that wasn’t the best project to try starting with. I’ll have to figure out what I can use to make a Nuvem.

  17. I’ve only ventured into lace knitting with small projects such as socks or small sweater details. I’d love to try my hand at a larger project with this delicious looking yarn. Salam wa sa’aadah

  18. I still have a lace wrap on the needles that I’m knitting with some JulieSpins Merino Lace, two strands held together. I buy a lot of lace yarn, but I’ve yet to finish a project with any of it. I’m seeing myself queuing up the Nuvem later with the one skein of Wollmeise Lace I’ve managed to get in the past year, though, lol. Yet another shawl/scarf to add to the pile of unfinished projects!

  19. I have knit lace, but never with lace weight yarn. Would like to make a Nuvem with Spice Market. Yours is beautiful.

  20. I have knit many a lace shawl/stole/wrap/scarf, but never a nuvem and never with Wollemeise – something I really need to remedy I think 🙂

  21. I have made a number of lace scarves. I love knitting lace especially beaded ones. Spice market is my favorite Wollmeise color.

  22. I have knit a few lace items, but nothing very difficult. I do enjoy the challenge and variety in knitting lace and look forward to knitting more lace in the future.

  23. Beautiful, I have had this on my list to make for a while, the only reason I haven’t is I have never been a big lace weight knitter, probably fear more than anything else, but now I think you have given me the bug. What an amazing trip enjoy

  24. Well, I never win these, but what the heck. I do love to make shawls. And really, who doesn’t like free yarn.

I hope you had a great time in Germany.

  25. I have knit a lot of scarfs and shawls. For my daughter’s wedding I knit shawls for the girls in the bridal party, one for my daughter and a little one for the flower girl. That was a total of 6. I was on a schedule to get them done but they were beautiful.

  26. The last thing I knit was the Swallowtail Shawl but without the nupps because I could not get it! So I put beads on instead!

  27. I LOVE knitting lace. It is so much fun to see it ‘open’ when blocked. I have also use WM lace garn for my Featherweight sweater by Hannah Fettig.

  28. I have knit a few scarves and shawls using laceweight yarn. I have not knit with Wollmeise lace yet. Would love to knit Nuvem with spice market. Enjoy your visit with Claudia in Germany.

  29. I have knit print o the wave shawl using malabrigo Lace but that’s it, and I think Mal lace is a bit thicker than other laceweight yarns, would love to try some Wollmeise!

  30. I knit the Citron shawl in Malabrigo Silkpaca for Camp Loopy and loved every minute of the process. I would love the opportunity to try Wollmeise lace and the Spice Market colorway is beautiful (I live in Vermont and thus I absolutely love fall). Thank you for always being so thoughtful!

  31. My first knitting project was the lace “Elizabeth Shawl” by Wendy Knits. Although, it was lace done in a worsted weight. I think I’m due to try an actual lace-weight yarn!

  32. I would love to knit a lace scarf or shawl, I have always wanted to and never have. It would be beautiful in the spice market yarn and perfect for fall!

  33. I started the nuvem once, made some mistakes and unknitted everything. It was my first time using two sets of circular needles and I think that it took me three or four attempts to get all the stitches casted on. I learned that in order to count correctly, do not have hubby in the same room at the same time. Why is it, that the only time that they want to carry on a conversation with you is when you are counting?
