If you read last week’s blog post, you know I’m in Germany this week, visiting Claudia (the Wollmeise). Last fall, Claudia and her friend Maria came to visit me, and we had a great time knitting, shopping, and hanging out. Usually, Claudia comes for the Spring Fling each year and we are so busy that we don’t get enough time to just sit and knit and chat. So it was fun to have her here during a non-Spring Fling time. (And it’s fun being with her here in Germany this week!) One thing that happened last fall when Claudia and Maria were here? I was bitten by the Nuvem bug. They both got off the plane wearing these beautiful scarf/wrap creations and I was immediately interested. Even MORE so when I tried it on. The Nuvem is knit with about 1700 yards of lace, making it really lightweight, but at the same time, really warm. I wanted to start one immediately.
So, I jumped right in using a skein of Spice Market. (It had been caked up to be a sweater, but you know my history with sweaters, up to this point.) The Nuvem pattern requires a lot (a LOT) of knitting around and around. But I really don’t mind that kind of knitting. You don’t have to think about it. One row is knit around. The second row is knit around, plus making about 12 increases along the way. That’s it! See how the ends flare out a little? That’s where you do the increases. (The true color is shown in the second photo.) And I liked working on it so much, that I started a second one while the first one was soaking in the wash, getting ready for a blocking. I thought it would be great knitting on the plane and in Germany. I did make some changes when I knit it. I made it longer (I cast on 230 stitches to begin with), I made it a little narrower (I think about 22 inches across), and I did 9 rows on the ruffle instead of 6.
So here’s the thing. I had caked up two skeins of Spice Market Lace when I thought I was making a sweater out of them (knitting it holding two strands together.) Since I changed my mind, I used one cake for my Nuvem and I have another Spice Market all caked up, ready to give to someone else. Would you like it? I just LOVE lace! My favorite 2 go-to patterns in lace are the Ishbel shawl and the Holden Shawlette.
I’ve not used lace yarn before, but I am game to try it. That pattern looks very intriguing.
I have two Nuvems. It’s the casting off that’s the killer. It took more more than 2 hours!
I love knitting with laceweight yarn. Recently I’ve finished a cardigan and a shawl using laceweight. I also like knitting lace patterns, and I can swear that the time it takes to ‘install’ a lifeline as you go along is well worth it! (says the woman who just yanked back 32 rows of a sweater with 2 lace patterns in it…didn’t take the time for the lifeline.)
I’ve just finished a lace shawl (Haruni) and have been thinking of making Nuvem. I have to finish most of my WIPs (some socks, one cardi for mum, one sweater for DS and a skirt for DD) before I start on anything new!
I have knit with lace weight yarn before but very rarely. I like to knit my lace shawls with fingering weight yarn. I don’t feel like it is going to fall apart on me as bad. Thanks for the chance to win your skein of Spice Market.
I need to stop reading this blog. Now I want to knit a Nuvem. I am going to Paris later this year and this is the perfect pattern for a lightweight but touch of warmth scarf/shawl. I’ve done lace a few times. I love the finished object – always light and airy, but very warm. Off to go look at lace weight in the shop.

I love knitting lace! I haven’t tried the nuvem but am intrigued…my favorite to knit was Snowflakes in Cedarwoods but my favorites to wear are Maplewing and River Walk.

I’m in the middle of my second lace project… a HUGE shawl designed by a local knitter who will hopefully publish her pattern soon. It’s had good and bad moments but I’d knit lace again!
Many years ago I worked as a tax preparer and would knit during my lengthy bus rides to and from work. I was nearly finished with a large shawl that was my project for that tax season. I was using a wool/silk blend and working it on the only circular needles I had that were long enough for the project – with slippery metal tips. (You know where this is going.) In my sleep deprived state I carelessly shoved my project into my bag and walked the few blocks to work. When I went back to it late that night, I discovered my former shawl had morphed into a tangled mess of yarn that had escaped from its needles. Sort of describes that tax season too.
I had just added the Nuvem pattern to my library in June and I love checking out the Wollmeise web site, always wanted to get some of the SPICE MARKET yarn!!
Yours looks great in the photos so it really makes me want to start this project as it would be the first time to do lace. I am ready for the challenge!
I love knitting with laceweight, but I usually want to work with something thicker after finishing a project. One of my first projects was an Estonian lace scarf, a bit ambitious for a new knitter, but I enjoyed making it. I don’t have any lace currently on my needles, but I always keep my eyes open!
Love knitting with lace yarn. Lace projects are my favorites, frankly. I love the lightweight, love the open, the airy. I’ve not only knit a bunch of shawls, I’ve even designed a couple of my own. Yep. Love lace.
I’ve done lots and lots of lace knitting! Used to use only laceweight yarn, but have been using a lot more fingering recently. Still and all – who could say no to Wollmeise?? I THInk it’s about time I did something substantial in true laceweight again. 🙂 Viel Spass in Deutschland!
Your Nuvem is beautiful!! I love mine, in Amahyst!! It was a very relaxing knitting. I did not ruffle the border. Instead I knitted a 3/2 rib for 12 rows. It looks great. Finished it a week ago and I am wearing it all the time. Hope you have a great time in Germany, it must be out of this world to be in Claudia’s studio and shop. Have a safe trip back!
What a gorgeous piece. One more reason for me to get Nuvem off my ‘to knit’ list and on the needles. I confess, I’m more of a fingering gal than laceweight, but I keep finding myself attracted to these huge lightweight pieces. It must be time. Any chance there will be some Wollmeise in Loopy’s future soon? (hint, hint)
I love knitting lace! Where I live, it is just so warm most of the time, that knitted lace is often my only opportunity to wear my knits. I’ve gone so far as to design several projects in lace (though none yet in laceweight yarn – I do have a few in my head, just waiting for me to get around to them…)

I haven’t knit Nuvem before but I sure would like to. I’ve knit several lace shawls (mostly fiber trends stuff) and, off and on for the last several months, I’ve been working on the Evenstar. One of these days I hope to finish it. I think Nuvem would be an awesome way to take a break from this huge project though. (I need frequent breaks lol)

I love knitting lace. I knit the Nuvem and have been wanting to cast on a section, too! My favorite lace project I ever knit won 1st place on lot and Best in Show last year at the South West New Mexico State fair! Yay me!
I really knitting lace but am too chicken to use lace weight and instead only use fingering. You know, because that’s sooooooooooooo much bigger. 😉 I have about a bazillion lace shawls but you know, not laceweight.

I’ve made one shawl using Wollmeise Lace, the Walk on the Moon. It is such a delight to work with, I can’t wait to try that yarn base again.

I’m gonna be the one to do a sweater. Why? Because by the time you finish with a shawl, you could have knit a sweater! Was looking at Willow Lace Sweater, Comfy Pullover Lite and Adrift (already made one of these with malabrigo lace but sleeveless and this time I’d add sleeves. I love knitting lace–many lace shawls and socks. My favorite pattern I have knitted so far is Jared Flood’s Girasole. This looks like a fun pattern and Spice Market is gorgeous!
I love to knit lace but have not for several months. I have not done a nuvem yet but one of these days. I think spice market is one of my favorite colors of Wollmeise and your two are just lovely in the color.

I have knit lacy shawls(the smallish kind) in fingering weight yarn but have yet to attempt anything in lace weight, this although I have quite a few skeins in my stash. This pattern is interesting and the yarn is truly a wonderful color.
I’m currently knitting a Nuvem using Wollmeise Lace (color Teddy Bear). It’s my take along project for easy no brainer knitting. I’m about halfway through it by now and seems I am taking my sweet time getting it done. By the time it is finished I should receive a Lifetime Achievement Award!! I look forward to the day when I can wrap myself in it’s oh so soft cloud-like lightness. Last year I misplaced the Nuvem once by forgetting it was in a friend’s knitting basket. I was thrilled when my friend reminded me she had it. Then if that wasn’t scary enough a few months later I actually lost it when it fell out of my basket while walking from my car to our fiber guild tent at the local Celtic Festival. That entire day I didn’t realize it was missing because I was busy spinning all day and not knitting. When I got home that night I was sick to my stomach when I discovered it had gone missing AGAIN! The next morning when I returned to the fairgrounds I went to the Lost & Found and there it was!! I had never been so happy as in the moment when I looked in the Lost & Found box and saw my project bag!
Lacey, cables, stockinette, it doesn’t matter, I love knitting shawls!
I haven’t knit Nuvem, but it’s in my queue. The lace weight project I loved knitting and would knit again is Evelyn Clark’s Angel Lace shawl.
I have not knit with lace yet, but Nuvem looks like just the project to get started with…good relaxing knitting!

Attempting to knit lace is what taught me that even one glass of wine really does cause cognitive impairment. I thought that was ridiculous, until I saw all the mistakes in my sweater the next morning, after a lovely mellow night of knitting.

I don’t do well when knitting lace. As hard as I try I mess it up but this pattern looks like I could do it because you just knit. As for the color, I love it. I am a fall color person and this would go with everything.

You’ve inspired me! I want one! My first lace was a Camp loopy project this summer. I bought a skein of prism delicato layers from you this summer also and am going to try the Morticia KAL in October (lace AND beads?! I’m crazy!)
