If you read last week’s blog post, you know I’m in Germany this week, visiting Claudia (the Wollmeise). Last fall, Claudia and her friend Maria came to visit me, and we had a great time knitting, shopping, and hanging out. Usually, Claudia comes for the Spring Fling each year and we are so busy that we don’t get enough time to just sit and knit and chat. So it was fun to have her here during a non-Spring Fling time. (And it’s fun being with her here in Germany this week!) One thing that happened last fall when Claudia and Maria were here? I was bitten by the Nuvem bug. They both got off the plane wearing these beautiful scarf/wrap creations and I was immediately interested. Even MORE so when I tried it on. The Nuvem is knit with about 1700 yards of lace, making it really lightweight, but at the same time, really warm. I wanted to start one immediately.
So, I jumped right in using a skein of Spice Market. (It had been caked up to be a sweater, but you know my history with sweaters, up to this point.) The Nuvem pattern requires a lot (a LOT) of knitting around and around. But I really don’t mind that kind of knitting. You don’t have to think about it. One row is knit around. The second row is knit around, plus making about 12 increases along the way. That’s it! See how the ends flare out a little? That’s where you do the increases. (The true color is shown in the second photo.) And I liked working on it so much, that I started a second one while the first one was soaking in the wash, getting ready for a blocking. I thought it would be great knitting on the plane and in Germany. I did make some changes when I knit it. I made it longer (I cast on 230 stitches to begin with), I made it a little narrower (I think about 22 inches across), and I did 9 rows on the ruffle instead of 6.
So here’s the thing. I had caked up two skeins of Spice Market Lace when I thought I was making a sweater out of them (knitting it holding two strands together.) Since I changed my mind, I used one cake for my Nuvem and I have another Spice Market all caked up, ready to give to someone else. Would you like it? Leave a comment below telling me about your adventures in knitting lace (Have you knit a lace scarf or wrap before? Would you do it again? Have you made a Nuvem? Or would this be your first time on a lace project?). I’ll draw a number next week and will let you know who wins the big, beautiful cake of Spice Market Lace.

I love Nuvem so much, I’ve made three. The first one I did with a cone of Colourmart Cashmere as a chemo shawl for a friend. After that I made it with the Lacegarn! It’s so different using the Wollmeise. It’s really the must lovely shawl when made out of the Lacegarn. It’s fabulous. I also made a Chittagong with it… another great pattern for a Lacegarn wrap. It’s so nice not to have to join yarn, since the skeins are so huge!
I love knitting lace but have only done a few projects. My first was Branching Out for my sister. My second though, was Tuscany. I’ve also done Annis and a Dane Shawl. Nuvem looks like fun–both to make and to wear!
I have always wanted to knit this pattern. I knit a lot of lace and love it. I love the color you used.
I have done lace knitting with worsted weight yarn…never lace weight. This would be a great enabler!!
I have knit quite a bit with lace weight yarn, and I love Martina’s patterns. I have this one and Vijante to knit, so would love to win your beautiful yarn.
I have knit several lace scarfettes, but never a nuvem – I will have to research what it is… and order some yarn that has enough in a skein to make one.. I love the colour of spice market and would love to knit it up..
Love the Nuvem and all her patterns. I’ve only used doubled laceweight, so this would be a fun adventure!
Working full time leaves me little downtime for lace knitting, but I do love to knit in the round – I hate purl rows on the back and forth. I also love mindless knitting where I can do it anywhere without a raft of paraphernalia. I would really love to give this a crack so I have a Nuvem ready for next winter (it is spring down under) 🙂
Great piece for Fall! Love this designer’s patterns, knitting a Vijante now. It is my soothing go-to project for TV watching 🙂
Hope you enjoy wearing this lovely Nuvem!
Oh, I love this. I have tried lace knitting before but always got disillusioned with the yo’s and gave it up. I have said if I could find a knit stitch pattern for a nice shawl I would enjoy a nice to shawl to wear. I have tried several times to get Wollmeise but never managed. The colorway is the fall colors that I love and use. If I was given a chance like this, I know I would manage to finish a shawl.
I have one Nuvem made out of Balarina but my Holy Grail skein of lace would be Spice Market!
My last lace project was a Citron. I’m now working on a Juliette Scarf. Love the Spice Market color!
I’ve done a few lace projects, but nt with Wollmeise lace. I’m working on a lace shawl now, Elizabeth zimmerman’s Camping Pi Shawl. The yarn that I’m using is a colorway that is special to me, it’s a bright, tonal green named Leona which was my mother’s name. When I finish this shawl and wear it, it’ll be like getting a hug from my mom, who passed away 9 years ago.
I did a cardigan out of wm lace once, loved knitting with it. I’ve knit a lot if lace, probably my most adventureous was doing Anniston 5 times. Or my hand spun Tuscan Sunflower that I ended up with less than a yard of yarn left over. That was scary.
The Nuvem is on my to knit list and this is a beautiful colorway!! I have knit one intricate lace shawl a couple of years ago. Since then I’ve been focused on fingering weight yarn. But I’ve been itching to go back to lace again in the near future. This would be a perfect excuse. Hope you’re enjoying your time in Germany 🙂
I love lace knitting, especially living in the tropics. Plus when you’re done it’s like magic when you block it. Who doesn’t like magic? I’m working on my Evenstar right now my most challenging work but I’m in love with it. I would love to make a Nuvem, I’ve knit some of Martina’s patterns and love them, so well written.
Every time I knit with lace, I think it’s the last time. But then, when the knitting’s finished, I think I can do it again, just one more time, for that really special project I’ve been dreaming about. . . . . . . I did a Nuvem in TLE fingering weight. Bet it would be amazing in the WM Lace!
The first lace shawl I ever knit was this summer’s camp loopy project 2! I LOVED knitting it. I would love to try my hand at Nuvem! Beautiful color too!
More lace yarn is always needed!
I have done several lace shawls. The Nuvem looks like a fantastic knit and Spice Market is a perfect color for me. I will be making this for sure whether I am lucky enough to win this yarn or not!!
I love this pattern and I want to start it, but I can’t seem to get the hang of the cast-on! Any suggestions?
That yarn looks wonderful! I have done a fair number of lace projects, mostly small shawls and most often with fingering weight yarns. But, I do love lace yarns, too, especially the really airy “Kidsilk Crack” (as the Yarn Harlot called Rowan’s Kidsilk Haze ; ).
I stink at lace. I obviously need much more practice. Love that pattern and hope I win.
I have bought lace, but so far haven’t dove right in. My friends are having a Nuvem knit along and Spice Market is one of my favorite colorways, so I could really see myself wrapped in a soft, fluffy Nuvem!
So I bought the pattern when it first came out and it defeated me on several different occasions. I am willing to try again, but I might need to come to knit night for support!
I’ve knit lace before and just love it! I would love to win the skein of Spice Market as it’s my most favorite Wollmeise colorway ever!
Nuveem is in my Ravelry queue and I would love to knit it out of spice market. I love knitting with lace weight!
Love to knit lace, usually a shawl.Do not have this color.Would love to win it.
I love your Nuvem. I have never knit with lace and don’t even think I’ve ever seen or touched lace except on your website. Spice Market does look like a great fall color.
Haven’t done Nuvem yet. I’ve done some simple lace patterns and simple lace borders. Would love to make something out of a skein of Spice Market
November is a beautiful shawl and is spectacular in Spice Market. I have done a bit of lace knitting but never with Wollmeise but would love to.
I’m about 2/3 of the way finished with my first Nuvem. I can’t wait to finish and wear it. I could totally see myself knitting another one with Spice Market.
Haven’t knitted Nuvem yet but it is a beautiful design. I have knitted lots and lots of lace.
All 3 of my lace projects have been with Wollmeise! I did an Off for a Walk with Charlotte with Graf Ratz, I’ve started an Evenstar in Neptune (that I’m terrified of messing up so it just stares mournfully from the project basket), and I have a Nuvem going, with Chim Chimney. It’s not moving as swiftly as I’d like, though.. maybe because I keep petting it to admire the color?
Oooh, that’s really pretty! I’m loving how big draped scarves are in right now, and I’d love to make a warm spicy Nuvem!
I’ve knit lace before, but only with fingering weight. Not a huge fan but I am thinking about a sweater made from lace weight yarn.
I got into lace when I took a class last year. To me it’s as addicting as sock knitting. Nuvem is one that I’ve had my eye on for a while. It looks like something that would be great to wrap up in when it’s cold in the office. It would be fantastic to win the Spice Market and be the envy of my coworkers!
I would love to knit a Nuvem! I have done a lace weight sweater once, but otherwise I usually save my lace for shawls. Lovely!
I love knitting lace once I get into the rhythm of the pattern. I have a couple of shawls I have knitted in lace and I am itching to get another on my needles
I need a little spice in my life and a Spicy Nuvem sounds like just the ticket. Thank you for sharing this with us!
Hmmmmmmm !
I have knit one lace-weight pi shawl. I love how light and warm it is. I would love to make a larger wrap, so I will definitely add Nuvem to my list!
I’d love to knit Nuvem–and wish I could be wrapped up in it right now. It’s getting chilly!
I made a lace shawl with Wollmeise lace and beads. Lots and lots of beads! Came out beautiful!
I’ve seen Nuvem on Ravelry and think that it looks fabulous! Bigger that Hitchhiker, but doable.
It’s amazing! Great job!
I love the yarn and would be happy to use it for a first lace project! 🙂
Love love lace knitting. After you finish it looks crumpled then with blocking a thing of beauty
I’ve knit several scarves using laceweight but none were all that large. Being a “bigger” girl I shy away from large projects because of the extra yarn and expense. I usually knit them for the thinner smaller people in my life. Now if the yarn was won in a contest then I could use it for myself….
I have lace projects in my queue, but have yet to really work on a true lace project. I’ve coveted that Spice Market colorway forever. That Nuvem sounds pretty nice and lightweight. I’ve added so many projects thanks to coming here to the blog to read about the patterns you’ve working on or found someone else working on, so thanks for the inspiration 🙂
I’ve knit a few amount of lace but never a Nuvem! Sounds like fun.
