Nuvem and a CONTEST!

Nuvem-Wollmeise-Lace-Spice-MarketIf you read last week’s blog post, you know I’m in Germany this week, visiting Claudia (the Wollmeise). Last fall, Claudia and her friend Maria came to visit me, and we had a great time knitting, shopping, and hanging out. Usually, Claudia comes for the Spring Fling each year and we are so busy that we don’t get enough time to just sit and knit and chat. So it was fun to have her here during a non-Spring Fling time. (And it’s fun being with her here in Germany this week!) One thing that happened last fall when Claudia and Maria were here? I was bitten by the Nuvem bug. They both got off the plane wearing these beautiful scarf/wrap creations and I was immediately interested. Even MORE so when I tried it on. The Nuvem is knit with about 1700 yards of lace, making it really lightweight, but at the same time, really warm. I wanted to start one immediately.

Nuvem-Wollmeise-Lace-Spice-MarketSo, I jumped right in using a skein of Spice Market. (It had been caked up to be a sweater, but you know my history with sweaters, up to this point.) The Nuvem pattern requires a lot (a LOT) of knitting around and around. But I really don’t mind that kind of knitting. You don’t have to think about it. One row is knit around. The second row is knit around, plus making about 12 increases along the way. That’s it! See how the ends flare out a little? That’s where you do the increases. (The true color is shown in the second photo.) And I liked working on it so much, that I started a second one while the first one was soaking in the wash, getting ready for a blocking. I thought it would be great knitting on the plane and in Germany. I did make some changes when I knit it. I made it longer (I cast on 230 stitches to begin with), I made it a little narrower (I think about 22 inches across), and I did 9 rows on the ruffle instead of 6.

So here’s the thing. I had caked up two skeins of Spice Market Lace when I thought I was making a sweater out of them (knitting it holding two strands together.) Since I changed my mind, I used one cake for my Nuvem and I have another Spice Market all caked up, ready to give to someone else. Would you like it? Leave a comment below telling me about your adventures in knitting lace (Have you knit a lace scarf or wrap before? Would you do it again? Have you made a Nuvem? Or would this be your first time on a lace project?). I’ll draw a number next week and will let you know who wins the big, beautiful cake of Spice Market Lace.

  1. I have knitted a number of lace shawls, some in lace weight yarn – others in a lighter weight. I definitely will make others. Have not knit thee Nuvem —yet !

  2. I know people think this is kind of weird, but lace is my go-to knitting for de-stressing. Some people like a simple knit to take care of the worries of their days, but in my case, I need something complicated enough to keep my attention away from those things weighing heavily on my mind. With lace, I can completely escape, so I knit a lot of it!

  3. I have already knit one Nuvem in WM lace in Tosca, thinking I would enjoy wrapping up in it in the cool Montana fall and winter months. It was quickly claimed by a friend! I am hoping to start another Nuvem soon – hopefully to finish before the snow flies!

  4. I’ve tried one lace project, but I chose a pattern that was beyond my abilities, and so I crashed and burned. But I’d love to try again with such a beautiful yarn and pattern…

  5. Working on the border of my Evenstar shawl, it’s been a 2+ yrs. First time I’ve done a beaded project. The Nuvem looks really cozy.

  6. OMG, I have wanted to knit this pattern and if I had spice market, I’d cast on as soon as it was in my hands. Why did you make the few changes to the pattern?

    Thanks,

    Sylvia

  7. Have knit quite a few lace shawls but with fingerling not lace yarn. Saw some beautiful lace weight shawls and scarves this summer from 2013 CL and trying to convince myself that “I can do that”. Nuvem would be a good place to begin and I love the WM Spice Market. If my name is drawn, you can be assured I will give the WM a good home!

  8. I’ve not made a Nuvem yet, but it does sound interesting, and certainly something easier to handle than a lace project! I’ve made a few lace shawls, but mostly with fingering weight. I keep buying laceweight, though!

Glad you’re enjoying Germany, and thanks for thinking of this contest!

  9. I love knitting with WM lace. unfortunately, my ball winder can’t handle the whole skein

luckily I have internet friends willing to wind it for me!

  10. I knit 12 shawls last year. Right now I have two on the needles because I just can’t stop, but I have never knit Nuvem. That yarn is beautiful and I’ve been dreaming about knitting something in WM for years.

  11. I am an “all in” lace knitter. No lifelines and, if I can help it, no markers… I tink… a lot! Nuvem might be a good pattern for me. I haven’t made it yet.

  12. My current lace knitting obsession is Boo Knits. It’s all I can do not to Buy All the Lace Yarn and knit every one of them. I’ll be joining up on her October KAL – Morticia.

  13. I’ve made a lace shawl in fingering weight yarn. Does that count? I’ve never tried lace-weight. This would be new for me. 🙂

  14. I have not made a Nuvem yet. It might be the perfect project to reintroduce myself to laceweight after the traumatic experience with the neverending Girasole.

  15. I have made quite a few lace projects but don’t have many practical places to wear them. My Nuvem gets the most wear because it can be worn a number of different ways. I’m thinking of starting another one soon.

  16. I hadn’t been to Ravelry for months, and this morning went back in finally to catch up on all I’d been missing. I had Nuvem bookmarked already! That Spice color would be fantastic for it. I’ve made a shawl out of WM lace in Poison, and that is such a nice weight to work with. I liked the slightly heavier weight. I’ve also gone down to cobweb weigh silk yarn for a wedding shawl that turned out fantastic! I do tend to use sock weight yarn for most of my lace projects, though. They knit up a little quicker, and aren’t so delicate that I’m afraid to shove it in my purse. 😀

  17. Viajante is one of my current projects, but I gotta wind my Lacegarn (Feldmaus) first! It will be my first project with laceweight yarn. I’d love to have your extra Spice Market (hello, fall!) to do a Nuvem (also have that pattern bought and queued up for after Viajante).

    Have a wonderful time!

  18. I bought lace weight in several brands and they’re all so different! Some were more cobweb, some usual lace and some more like light fingering. I tried to knit a project with the cobweb one and ended up frogging it a couple times. My first completed lace weight project was actually for camp loopy 2013! Juliespins in a Vaijante. I loved the project. I am dying to knit a Nuvem in the Wollmeise lace weight!

  19. I made a Nuvem out of a Maria’s Deepest Purple that I bought from one of the first Loopy Ewe WM updates! It is just gorgeous and I wear it at work when it gets cold in my office–which is all the time. It’s just the perfect weight for a nice, light and warm cover-up.

  20. Nuvem is on my to-do list – miles and miles of soothing knitting on fine yarn. It seems like it takes a long time, but it is SO relaxing it is worth it.
I’ve done several scarves with fine yarn, and I enjoy lace – but it’s kind of like the difference between playing canasta and bridge – sometimes you want to relax with friends and play canasta, sometimes you want the challenge and excitement of playing bridge.

  21. I am currently working on my first lace-weight shawl. It won’t be very big, and I love the idea of a shawl that is both big and lightweight.

  22. I enjoy knitting lace, and have never gotten the chance to knit Wollmeise lace. I’m a big Martina Behm fan too, (currently knitting the Berlin scarf) and would love to try Nuvem. Thanks for the opportunity, and have a wonderful trip!

  23. I would love a spice market Nuvem! My one skein of wm lace is currently the beginning of a Viajante. I have one other skein that isn’t sure what it wants to be. Maybe a Forest Path Stole or something else amazing!

  24. Oo, I love that colorway! Been doing a lot of lace scarves and cowls lately, helping to burn through my sock yarn glut. Done a circle shawl too, though I’m not happy with the bind off.

  25. I’ve had nuvem in my favorites for forever. I’ve never knit with lace, but even if I don’t win, this may be the project that changes that.

  26. I have only knit with lace once, but have really wanted to knit this Nuvem. I are sure that it will be on my needles before Chrstmas whether I win or not. Thanks for the giveaway.

  27. I ALWAYS have a lace project going, but I’ve never made this one. And never used that yarn, either. It would be awesome to do both!

  28. I finished my first Nuvem early this summer. I loved knitting on it and definitely would make another one. Her designs are so much fun….how about that center magical cast on method !

  29. I haven’t knitted anything, but I also haven’t been knitting for very long. This is beautiful and would love to give it try!

  30. Nuvem is an amazing pattern. Perfect for Wollmeise Lacegarn. It looks good in every color! I am anxious to make a Nuvem, and would love to use a fabulous color like Spice Market.
