Come Camp With Us!

Did you ever attend summer camp when you were growing up? I went to camps in Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota in my early years and enjoyed all of them. In honor of summertime and camping, we’d like to invite you to Camp Loopy this summer! Here’s what you can expect:

No traveling to get here, no bugs, no tents and no camping fee.

Plus:

– fun monthly project challenges
– a few various sales on “camping” equipment during the summer
– bonuses for completing your camping (knitting) projects
– camp contests, camp songs, camp stories, camp recipes, etc!

So – do you want to be a Camp Loopy Camper this summer? Our first Camping Project – “Campfire Nights” – starts soon!

Here are the specifics for your first project:

– knit between June 15 and July 15

– a two-color project in either a cape, a shawl, or a scarf. (Things that would keep you warm, when sitting around the campfire in the cool of the night. See ideas and links below.)

– you can get 20% off of the yarn for this project by adding “Camp Loopy” to the order notes and letting us know which yarn in that order you will be using for your project. We’ll adjust the cost down when we print  your order. (Offer is good on any orders placed 6/3 – 6/10. Make sure that the discount does not take you below the free shipping amount on U.S. orders, if you’re going for free shipping.)

The rewards:

– for each project you finish on time (and upload a photo to the Loopy Gallery within two days of the end-date), we’ll double your Frequent Shopper Credits on that yarn purchase (if purchased 6/3 – 6/10). So if you spend $50 for yarn for the first project, we’ll add another $50 to your FSB total if you turn in a picture of the completed project by 7/17. (International Campers get an extra week, due to the time it takes for your yarn to get to you.) Remember, each time you accumulate $250 in orders here at The Loopy Ewe, you get a $25 Loopy Ewe credit in your account. This finishing bonus helps you to get there even faster!

– You can do one, two or all three of the projects that we’ll introduce this summer. As an added bonus, if you do complete all three (with photos uploaded by the due dates), we’ll send you a free Fall Project in September.** (1 skein of fingering weight yarn, plus a pattern of our choosing. And this isn’t going to be “what yarn can we get rid of” yarn. We don’t do that. We’re sending Wollmeise in these kits!)

(**Please note – you’re welcome to knit the projects using yarn from your stash and camp along with us. However, we’re unable to offer the Double Credits Finishing Bonus or the Free Fall Kit in those instances.)

Here are a few pattern ideas for your Campfire Nights project (although any two-color cape/shrug/shawl/scarf will qualify):

Winter’s Rhythm (I just finished this out of Three Irish Girls Cashmerino Worsted. Photo next week. Another good option – Cascade 220.)
Catkin (fingering weight)
Whippoorwill (fingering weight. I used Madtosh Merino Light.)
Daybreak (fingering weight)
Andrea’s Shawl (sport weight)
Ulmus (fingering weight)
Roma Shawl (fingering weight)
Cladonia (fingering weight)
Skewed Shawl (worsted weight)
Sedna’s Shawl (sport weight)

Or be creative and take one of your favorite one-color shawl/cape/shrug/scarf patterns and turn it into a two-color pattern. Maybe a ruffle in a different color? Or certain middle sections? I saw a couple Pamuya’s done up in two colors at our Spring Fling and they were so beautiful.

As the summer progresses, watch for:

Camp Loopy fun on the blog, special contests, project announcements as we go along, and a few surprises. The second Camping Project – “Hiking in the Mountains” – will run from 7/15 – 8/15, with more details about that in the July 1st blog post.

(Edit: For Q & A’s that have come up since this original post, please see the blog post I did here.)

  1. I have decided on Prism shawl for my camp project, placed my order and forgot to write CampLoopy in the code, not worried about the discount but want to be sure to get credit for the Loopy Legends and Loopy Solid I ordered. Bangs head against desk several times!

  2. I’m in – doing Catkin in seashore and turquoise Madeleine tosh light. I’m hoping to do all three projects. I’ve never been lucky enough to score any WM so that’s even more enticing!!

  3. I want to be a camper! I went to camp in Wisconsin as a kid, too. My little sister was shocked that I still had the t-shirt from my first year.

  4. Yay! I loved camp as a kid….this sounds even better. 😉

*And* Winter’s Rythm is the exact type of project I had in mind for my Mom’s Christmas present. I’ve ordered Carey and Enna in Three Irish Girls and am hoping it comes and is more purple-y than burgundy. This timing will have an added bonus as it will be the first time ever I’m not frantically trying to finish my Mom’s gift on December 23rd! 😉

  5. I am totally IN… love this idea… like others, had already planned several shawlettes for summer knitting, so I need to get my order in! I love Camp, won’t be able to go take classes at Sock Summit this year, though I hope to slide in there for seeing friends and shopping… I think we need lots of Camp Loopy Chatter…

Is it possible to do that, have a page just for Camp chat and postings? Sounds like you’re planning something along those lines for photos at the end of each month, and I guess we can chatter in the Loopy group on Ravelry…

  6. I love the idea of Camp Loopy. This includes everyone who wants to join. I’m definitely in and looking forward to it. I have wanted to do the Catkin for quite some time now. Would really like to do it in wollmeise but that probably won’t happen so I look at the enormous selection at TLE and I know I’ll find just the right thing.

I also want to do the first capelet in two colors. These are perfect for fall in New England. Thank you Sheri for coming up with this idea.

  7. This is a wonderful idea and I have always loved camping. I am going to knit the Catkin shawl in honor of my wonderful kitties.

  8. I don’t enjoy camping but Camp Loopy sounds delightful! I am IN, yeay.

I just finished Citrine in green and white – that could be a good/easy pattern for people to consider too. Currently I am finishing up Catkin in brown/pink. Lovely pattern, not quite so hard once you decipher the lengthy notes and the swatch is a MUST.

Thanks Loopy Ewe for putting this fun idea together 🙂

  9. Wow, this sounds like fun. I am not sure if I can go to camp this summer, but it will be fun watching along the way.

  10. Camp Loopy here I come! (I wish!!!) Down here in Australia we are just beginning to go into winter, (brrrrr…) so snuggling up with a good knit will be heaps of fun! I am planning to do the Cladonia Shawl in Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light in Turquoise and Ms. Taylor. The pictures of the colors weren’t available when I ordered the yarn, so I am flying a bit blind, but I think it is going to be really pretty anyway. I will be dreaming of Camp Loopy in the USA, with happy memories of going to a summer camp, Lutherhaven in Idaho, when I was 9. That was a long time ago! I am so glad I have learned to knit in the meantime!!! Cheers to all my fellow camp-mates! This will be fun!

  11. I had only gone camping once as a child and it was awful. I am going camping this time and I am sure it will be great. If I can only make up my mind and find one easy enough for me to do. I also like this camping as it is much easier to pack for. =)

  12. Sheri – Do in store purchases count as well? If I picked up the yarn in the store next week would I get the 20% discount, double credits, and be eligible for the Fall kit?

  13. I’m going to try to give this a shot – I’ll be doing it crochet style. Off to look at the pretty colors…

  14. Sheri…
    What a wonderful idea!!!
If we buy the main yarn during the shopping period but use scraps for the contrast (say in a Whippoorwill where there isn’t much contrast color)….would that be okay?

  15. Great! I have Camp Ava set up on the deck already for the low to no humid nights. I have a hook where I can hang the bug netting. When I designed the library/sunroom for Mom in 97, I included exterior outlets for electricity and telephone. So I have nice lighting complete with bug/yellow and regular lighting and fans. Sources for the computer and I have got Netflixs/Hulu plus the cable hook-up set up on the MAC, along with books to read too! In addition, I created and built the platform to support the ‘double level AeroBed. Swimming pool already cranked up and ready to go, the neighbors said have at it!

I am all set to enjoy the great outdoors!

So count me in! This is going to be way too much fun!

All I have to do now is make the great decision of what pattern and which fibers to choose!

  16. I am in! i have placed my camp loopy order (or two, ahem) with high hopes of completing at least two shawls for this session of camp. yay!

  17. Can’t believe I am doing this…BUT!!! I AM IN!!! YAY ;o))
Order has been placed and I hope the colors I chose truly complement each other!

  18. Does the project have to been knitted? If I weave a scarf would that count? Either way….I am doing it! 🙂

  19. I just got my order Thursday. Can I use some of that yarn? Okay I will
Get busy looking for a complimentry colour. I was planning to make a shawl out for it for friend. I hate getting dirty so this is my kind camping. And I absolutely hate sweating……………okay camp counselor elves I am getting ready.

  20. I think I will play…I am always trying to knit a shawl that I will actually wear! I struggle with the depth of the things and they don’t seem big enough for Lake Superior weather.
    I might do a Stripe Study….we’ll see!

  21. This is such a fun idea, especially since without deadlines I am a notoriously distracted and slow knitter. I am particularly in love with Catkin! One problem though… One of the two colors I’d want to use for it is already in my stash…. (it’s a limited edition color from Three Irish Girls!) Would it still count toward the fall project if only one of my two colors is ordered from Loopy during the qualifying time? *fingers crossed*

  22. I’m in! But I have a few questions. 1. Can a varigated yarn count as two-toned? 2. Does fringe count as a second color if it is in a different yarn?

  23. How fun – Summer Camp for knitters! I need another project for this summer (2 sweaters & 1 socks OTN now) I am going to do Whippoorwill in the Madtosh merino lt. – have been wanting to try that yarn – off to purchase –

  24. Great idea! I have had Whippoorwill in my faves for awhile….will used Madeline
    tosh lt merino and bugga.

  25. I want to go to camp! Any chance I could crochet a two color project instead of knit? I’m such a slow knitter.

    Yeah! Can’t wait.

  26. I am so looking forward to camp! I’m going to make Whippoorwill and I off to the Loopy Ewe for more yarn!! Yipppppeeeeee!!

  27. I’m in! Yarn is ordered now I just have to decide which pattern. Plus I have a shawl on the needles that needs to be finished by the 15th so I’m ready to go! Great idea Sheri!

  28. I’m in! Leaving for trip soon….what a great project to do while I fly for 6 hours!!!

    Thanks!

  29. I love this—especially the no bugs part—but would it be possible to do a crochet project instead of a knitting project? Crochet suits me better in the summer…

  30. I am in as well. I think I will do either Castille Shawl or Pamuya. Yarn is TBD. How fun, I can’t wait to get started.

  31. I took a look at the suggested patterns and I had no idea 2-color shawls could be so stunning. Even though I have no time, I am doing Catkin in Tosh Light!! Off to TLE to place my order….you are a temptress, Sheri!

    Trish

  32. What a fun idea Sheri – I found a great two color shawlette in the newest KnitScene in Spud and Chloe Sweater – I just need some help choosing 2 colors – I emailed you about it – I’m sure you’ll help me out when you have time.

    Melody

  33. I can’t find the order instructions space to put in Camp Loopy. I selected the yarn put in all of my credit card information, address etc., but there was no place to add Camp Loopy. Do I have to place the order first?

Thanks. This sounds like a lot of fun.
