Come Camp With Us!

Did you ever attend summer camp when you were growing up? I went to camps in Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota in my early years and enjoyed all of them. In honor of summertime and camping, we’d like to invite you to Camp Loopy this summer! Here’s what you can expect:

No traveling to get here,Β no bugs, no tents andΒ no camping fee.

Plus:

– fun monthly project challenges
– a few various sales on “camping” equipment during the summer
– bonuses for completing your camping (knitting) projects
– camp contests, camp songs, camp stories, camp recipes, etc!

So – do you want to be a Camp Loopy Camper this summer? Our first Camping Project – “Campfire Nights” – starts soon!

Here are the specifics for your first project:

– knit between June 15 and July 15

– a two-color project in either a cape, a shawl, or a scarf. (Things that would keep you warm, when sitting around the campfire in the cool of the night. See ideas and links below.)

– you can get 20% off of the yarn for this project by adding “Camp Loopy” to the order notes and letting us know which yarn in that order you will be using for your project. We’ll adjust the cost down when we print Β your order. (Offer is good on any orders placed 6/3 – 6/10. Make sure that the discount does not take you below the free shipping amount on U.S. orders, if you’re going for free shipping.)

The rewards:

– for each project you finish on time (and upload a photo to the Loopy Gallery within two days of the end-date), we’ll double your Frequent Shopper Credits on that yarn purchase (if purchased 6/3 – 6/10). So if you spend $50 for yarn for the first project, we’ll add another $50 to your FSB total if you turn in a picture of the completed project by 7/17. (International Campers get an extra week, due to the time it takes for your yarn to get to you.) Remember, each time you accumulate $250 in orders here at The Loopy Ewe, you get a $25 Loopy Ewe credit in your account. This finishing bonus helps you to get there even faster!

– You can do one, two or all three of the projects that we’ll introduce this summer. As an added bonus, if you do complete all three (with photos uploaded by the due dates), we’ll send you a free Fall Project in September.** (1 skein of fingering weight yarn, plus a pattern of our choosing. And this isn’t going to be “what yarn can we get rid of” yarn. We don’t do that. We’re sending Wollmeise in these kits!)

(**Please note – you’re welcome to knit the projects using yarn from your stash and camp along with us. However, we’re unable to offer the Double Credits Finishing Bonus or the Free Fall Kit in those instances.)

Here are a few pattern ideas for your Campfire Nights project (although any two-color cape/shrug/shawl/scarf will qualify):

Winter’s Rhythm (I just finished this out of Three Irish Girls Cashmerino Worsted. Photo next week. Another good option – Cascade 220.)
Catkin (fingering weight)
Whippoorwill (fingering weight. I used Madtosh Merino Light.)
Daybreak (fingering weight)
Andrea’s Shawl (sport weight)
Ulmus (fingering weight)
Roma Shawl (fingering weight)
Cladonia (fingering weight)
Skewed Shawl (worsted weight)
Sedna’s Shawl (sport weight)

Or be creative and take one of your favorite one-color shawl/cape/shrug/scarf patterns and turn it into a two-color pattern. Maybe a ruffle in a different color? Or certain middle sections? I saw a couple Pamuya’s done up in two colors at our Spring Fling and they were so beautiful.

As the summer progresses, watch for:

Camp Loopy fun on the blog, special contests, project announcements as we go along, and a few surprises. The second Camping Project – “Hiking in the Mountains” – will run from 7/15 – 8/15, with more details about that in the July 1st blog post.

(Edit: For Q & A’s that have come up since this original post, please see the blog post I did here.)

  1. My husband & i camped once right after we were married (34 yrs ago). We decided a motel was our preferred mode of camping. So, knitting in air conditioning sounds like my perfect camping experience!!

  2. Would it count towards the finishing bonus if we use more than two colors? I had never seen the Catkin pattern before and I must make one immediately, but the gold/turquoise picture reminds me of Egyptian motifs, and I think I’d probably want to add some red (carnelian) in addition to gold and lapis colors.

Also, anyone who has made this shawl, would Loopy’s Solid Series be an appropriate yarn? If I’m going to be fussy about color, that’s really the way to go. Since the pattern has no openwork lace that would sproing back from blocking in a high-twist sock yarn, I’m thinking it would work fine.

  3. Does anyone know how much of the Madeline Tosh Light is needed for Whirlpool? I saw that Sheri only used 1 skein of each for the size medium, but I want to make the large size.

Any input would be helpful! Thanks!

PS: I’m in – even though I’m moving 700 miles away on June 17th!!!

  4. This is my ideal for camping! (Where you have indoor plumbing, internet access, and spoiled kitties ready to pile on my lap to “help”.)

I just ordered a couple of skeins so I can make the “Stripe Study Shawl”
    http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/stripe-study-shawl
that I’d been eying for a while. And the due date is perfect: Just in time to take a new shawl with me to the Sock Summit at the end of July so I don’t freeze inside the building.

Thanks for the fun idea, and all the thought and detail you put into it. πŸ™‚

  5. Oh, yay!!! I got my Groupie package today and now I get to go camping, too?? I was so disappointed because I thought “Camp at Loopy? I wish I could go.” But then was surprised to see that there was no travel involved, so I do get to go!!! I can’t wait to get started. Off to do some shopping…. I can’t wait. πŸ™‚

Thank you, Sheri, for everything you do!!!

  6. Aw, gee, I was picturing a camping trip in beautiful Loveland Colorado!! OK, I’ll get set fire to the living room floor and toast some marshmallows!

  7. I love camp! Even more fun without the packing! Fell in love with some versions of Daybreak and I think I will have to make my own! Thanks for asking us along on your camping adventure!

  8. When I got up this morning, I didn’t know I was on my way to camp! How exciting! Thank you, Sheri, for all the ways you make knitting more fun.

  9. I’m headed to camp and don’t even have to pack bug spray! Love it! I have a great idea for a two-color shawlette. A favorite pattern but now you got me to thinking of how to change it. Awesome!! Thanks. Have a wonderful weekend.

  10. I’m in!! I found the cutest scarf pattern for myself that I wanted to make last year…did I do it….of course not!! Well, I’m going to Camp and get it done. You know, I always hated summer camp. My Mother had it in her head that this was what the “rich crowd” did so she sent me every year. Hated, hated, hated it. Camp Loopy is more my style. Thanks, Sheri, for thinking outside the box…or should I say, the tent!!

  11. YAY!!! This lets me go camping this summer in the best possible way, and I can still sleep on my comfy mattress and take a hot shower in the morning!!

  12. Toast marshmallows in the microwave for 20-30 seconds on a paper plate till bloated,
(best to put graham cracker under marshmallow before placing in microwave.)
    Take out of microwave,
Put chocolate and graham cracker on top and squish top and bottom together
be careful of the hot marshmallow (no burnt, charcoaley marshmallows here!)
Come for a virtual campfire round up on the night projects are due…Have fun!

Count me in…but I just got my order today and MUST use what I have!

Camping with no travel, no bugs, no sweat, no work….ahhhhh. It is priceless!

  13. Panic went through my mind at first when I thought shawl, I can’t knit that fast but then reread and saw it included scarves. So, summer camp here I come.

  14. At last! I’ve never been to Camp and here is my opportunity! I am a very slow knittner but will do my best to get up to speed. Let the kneedeling begin!

  15. I definately can’t go on a vacation this year so i am definately going to camp!! Just downloaded the shawl pattern. I will be ready to go. Thanks for doing this, just what i needed. You are the best Pat

  16. I never got to go to camp, but I have been camping. I’ll give camp a try since I absolutely need more yarn and projects.

  17. Is it against the rules to knit something for someone else? Like, if I wanted to knit something to keep my brother warm while “camping” rather than myself?

  18. I just ordered a skein of 2-color Madelinetosh to make the Daybreak shawl, but now I’m wondering if I should be ordering two DIFFERENT colors of wool for the project. I was just planning on using the one skein that has two colors. Let me know if that would disqualify my project and I’ll try to find a coordinating yarn. Thanks.

  19. What an awesome idea! I think I’m going to have to go with yarn that’s in my stash, though it’s hard to pass up the generous discount for yarn for the project. Now to just decide which project….

  20. Me, me, me!!!!!! I am camping now at the beach in Delaware (my version- in a travel trailer that has a screen room)!

  21. wow, what a fun idea! i look forward to it – thanks for putting this all together – i always look forward to my loopy deliveries!

  22. oh me! I have Stripe Study shawl queued, and also I’m waiting on the Malabrigo Book 3 to come back into stock in order to do the Stephen West pattern in it….Lakedale.

  23. I LOVE the idea of no bug camping! Love this whole idea. I have no time to add yet another project onto my pile, especially one with a deadline! But I don’t care. I am gonna anyway. LOL

So I’m in. I found yarn. I’ll figure out a pattern while I wait for it I guess. LOL

  24. I’m already doing a Catkin AND a KAL with BFF Sarah AND just ordered yarn for Stephen West’s new pattern, Spectra, but of course BFF Sarah enabled me. Patterns were evaluated, yarns debated over, colors purchased. And now I must. Knit. Faster. because you’ve dangled the “free Wollmeise” carrot. I can knit fast for that. πŸ˜›

  25. I’m a nurse at our local camp and my daughter has grown up there and is now on staff. I love this idea. I can take my shawl to music camp. My first foray into this cool two colour thing was Kirsten Kapur’s Moody Kerchief. The Daybreak is just done blocking, so I’ll try to pick one of your choices for my next one!

  26. How about crochet? Must they be knitted? I do knit, but I’ve been in the mood to crochet lately . . .

  27. Sheri, another stroke of genius: knitting camp without travel, hotel, and registration expenses! πŸ™‚ I want to join up, but don’t have knitting time now, so it’ll have to wait until the end of summer.

  28. Loving the “bug free” camping πŸ˜€ I usually don’t do KALs because I knit slow, but for Wollmeise I will try to knit faster!

  29. I’m in! I’ve been dying to make a Catkin and have lots of driving/riding time coming up soon! Off to ponder the yarn! Yay!!!!

  30. I love camping! I love the challenge of it….hopefully I will be able to keep up. πŸ™‚

  31. I love the idea of Loopy Summer Camp. I can’t wait. First project is picked and yarns are ordered! πŸ™‚

  32. Hi! The idea of going camping without bugs and without crawling in and out of a tent, which I can absolutely not do, sounds good. I might come sit with you around the fire and maybe knit for a little while. It is just that I am not so good at finishing, but I am really good at starting πŸ™‚ and it is always good to have a reason for getting more yarn (or maybe use some of the yarn I get from yarn clubs). So count me in.

  33. I am so in. I was planning to knit Daybreak next (before I knew about camp). But then I looked at all of Sheri’s suggestions. Now I’m glad I have until 6/15 to pick a project πŸ™‚

  34. This sounds like fun! I’ve been wanting to make Clockwork, so I picked out some MadTosh Pashmina for it.

Just the other day I was commenting to the boyfriend that I wish I could go to summer camp! This is definitely the kind of camp I was thinking of πŸ˜‰

  35. Awesomesauce! I’d like to do TWO first projects: a shawl AND a poncho. Can I use the 20% discount on the yarn for both?

    Thanks, sounds like fun!

  36. What a great challenge!!! I’ve been wanting to knit Cladonia since I first saw it and this is the perfect excuse. I love knitting with lighter weight yarns in the summer and so I’ve chosen Alchemy Yarns in Moonstone and Dusk. So. Very. Pretty. πŸ™‚ Thanks so much for hosting this knitting fun!!!

  37. Good timing! I’ve had the Whippoorwill on my To Knit list for some time now. This will be just the reason I need to cast on!
