Did you ever attend summer camp when you were growing up? I went to camps in Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota in my early years and enjoyed all of them. In honor of summertime and camping, we’d like to invite you to Camp Loopy this summer! Here’s what you can expect:
No traveling to get here, no bugs, no tents and no camping fee.
Plus:
– fun monthly project challenges
– a few various sales on “camping” equipment during the summer
– bonuses for completing your camping (knitting) projects
– camp contests, camp songs, camp stories, camp recipes, etc!
So – do you want to be a Camp Loopy Camper this summer? Our first Camping Project – “Campfire Nights” – starts soon!
Here are the specifics for your first project:
– knit between June 15 and July 15
– a two-color project in either a cape, a shawl, or a scarf. (Things that would keep you warm, when sitting around the campfire in the cool of the night. See ideas and links below.)
– you can get 20% off of the yarn for this project by adding “Camp Loopy” to the order notes and letting us know which yarn in that order you will be using for your project. We’ll adjust the cost down when we print your order. (Offer is good on any orders placed 6/3 – 6/10. Make sure that the discount does not take you below the free shipping amount on U.S. orders, if you’re going for free shipping.)
The rewards:
– for each project you finish on time (and upload a photo to the Loopy Gallery within two days of the end-date), we’ll double your Frequent Shopper Credits on that yarn purchase (if purchased 6/3 – 6/10). So if you spend $50 for yarn for the first project, we’ll add another $50 to your FSB total if you turn in a picture of the completed project by 7/17. (International Campers get an extra week, due to the time it takes for your yarn to get to you.) Remember, each time you accumulate $250 in orders here at The Loopy Ewe, you get a $25 Loopy Ewe credit in your account. This finishing bonus helps you to get there even faster!
– You can do one, two or all three of the projects that we’ll introduce this summer. As an added bonus, if you do complete all three (with photos uploaded by the due dates), we’ll send you a free Fall Project in September.** (1 skein of fingering weight yarn, plus a pattern of our choosing. And this isn’t going to be “what yarn can we get rid of” yarn. We don’t do that. We’re sending Wollmeise in these kits!)
(**Please note – you’re welcome to knit the projects using yarn from your stash and camp along with us. However, we’re unable to offer the Double Credits Finishing Bonus or the Free Fall Kit in those instances.)
Here are a few pattern ideas for your Campfire Nights project (although any two-color cape/shrug/shawl/scarf will qualify):
Winter’s Rhythm (I just finished this out of Three Irish Girls Cashmerino Worsted. Photo next week. Another good option – Cascade 220.)
Catkin (fingering weight)
Whippoorwill (fingering weight. I used Madtosh Merino Light.)
Daybreak (fingering weight)
Andrea’s Shawl (sport weight)
Ulmus (fingering weight)
Roma Shawl (fingering weight)
Cladonia (fingering weight)
Skewed Shawl (worsted weight)
Sedna’s Shawl (sport weight)
Or be creative and take one of your favorite one-color shawl/cape/shrug/scarf patterns and turn it into a two-color pattern. Maybe a ruffle in a different color? Or certain middle sections? I saw a couple Pamuya’s done up in two colors at our Spring Fling and they were so beautiful.
As the summer progresses, watch for:
Camp Loopy fun on the blog, special contests, project announcements as we go along, and a few surprises. The second Camping Project – “Hiking in the Mountains” – will run from 7/15 – 8/15, with more details about that in the July 1st blog post.
(Edit: For Q & A’s that have come up since this original post, please see the blog post I did here.)
Who wants to be a Camp Loopy Camper this summer?

At last a camp I can like! I hope I can last the distance, but I have Chrispy of Oz in my back up crew. Thanks for the idea! I am just so glad that I don’t have to swim all the way from Australia to be part of this camp!
Hi,
I am looking forward to this kind of camp!! Krispy1 of O z is supporting me and thanks to her for that. Thanks Sheri for the idea. Also I am really glad that I don’t have to swim from Australia to get there.
I would like to camp in the US this summer:-) Heidi from northern part of Norway
Wow! What a great idea – summer knitting fun with prizes at the end! I love it – count me in!
Oh I loved summer camp. This will be the best- no mosquito bites or sunburn!!!
Will we have a color war???
I love the Catkin but am going to do the Crow Waltz since it has been in my queue longer
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-crow-waltz-shawl
I’m with Kathleen – can’t find an “order notes” space to put in “Camp Loopy”. So I’m having the same question.
I’m looking forward to participating in Camp Loopy! I’ve picked out my pattern (Roma Shawl), now I just need to get my yarn!
Sheri, after reading that you enjoy a no-bug version of camping, I have to warn you about the moths here in the Front Range. Every late May/early June, moths come to this area for a few weeks in droves. They’re called miller moths and during the day they hide in any dark, tight space they can find. Unfortunately this includes our screen doors. We’ve been bombarded with moths when we open the door to get the mail or to cool off the house with fresh air. The good news is that they won’t get into wool or pantry supplies. Supposedly the moth population this year is lower than normal, but this is my first experience with them and they seem quite plentiful to me. I’ve been chasing them around with the vacuum hose. Now that we know where they like to hide, we’ve had fewer get into the house. I still can’t wait until they’re gone, though.
So…. can it be a short cowl type scarf? Or hat? I REALLY need a new fall/winter hat and I always wear one when I camp. 🙂
Count me in. I used to go to summer church camp and loved it. This will give me a push to start and finish a project. I’m loving being a Loopy Camp camper. When is the smoors roast?
Camp?!! WOW! I didn’t think that I would be able to do that this year. Please count me in.
I’m not a fast knitter, but maybe this will inspire me to speed it up!
I do, I do! I’m going to make the Morlynn Shawl by Karigan Huskycity and I’m going to use Wollmeise yarn. I’m excited to begin on June 15! I hope I can finish it in a month’s time — here’s to doing nothing else (though I do have to go to work) but knitting — WOOHOO!
I just placed the order for my Camp Loopy project yarn. I’m adapting an old one-color shawl pattern into a two-color project. This is an experiment; I hope it turns out something like what I’m envisioning!
By the way, I went to camp once when I was a little kid, and, in spite of the s’mores, it was not a good experience. I think I’ll like this summer camp much better! 🙂
Clara, I love the Morlynn shawl, and I almost chose it, but wasn’t sure I could complete it in time. Can’t wait to see your version!
Holly and Kathleen, the space to enter “order notes” comes after you submit your order. The order is confirmed, and you can attach a note to it at that point.
Hmmm…..dont need another project….am way behind in all my projects….so who wants to Camp Loopy???? ME!!!!!!!!!
I just placed my order. I bought a shawl pattern and while I might have two colors that work well for it, I think I would rather get even more pretty yarn!
I went online to order some Wollmeise yarn and it’s all out of stock. I had the colors in mind, too! Oh well, I bought just as beautiful colors in the Alchemy sock yarn as I would have ordered in Wollmeise and I just know those two colors combined will make a very pretty Morlynn Shawl. Can’t wait to receive my order and can’t wait until June 15!
My husband is soooo going to shoot me. Most women hide their shoe purchases in under the bed…well, I hide my yarn stash (and maybe a few pairs of new shoes, too)!
I debated for a few days, but I think I’m in…off to scour patterns!
Sounds like fun! I’m in and will be working on Hitchhiker in Zauberball, off to order!
Heck yeah! I am so in on this! Off to find the perfect pattern…
I’m in – yarn order just placed. Since I already have a shawl and sweater in the works, decidd on a quicky scarf pattern – the Flower scarf pattern linked from your blog. Scarf in one color, flower in another and maybe an edging on the flower of the scarf color. Looking forward to it.
Please don’t tell my husband I’m camping! He wants me to actually go out and sleep in a tent! I’ve done it before and it is so NOT me!! This is the kind of camping Iove–knitting in hand in my favorite chair. I really must be crazy though, I have a ton of yarn already. The finishing rewards were worth at least trying to finish some projects. I hope I can make it!!
I’m in. Just placed my order.
Just placed my order so I can be a camper at Camp Loopy. Decided on Pamuya in JulieSpins, Capri and Dreamer. Couldn’t believe I only had one shawl out of close to 30 in blue. Can’t wait to get started! I loved summer camp but so much more rewarding when you don’t have to soak yourself in bug spray!
Just my kind of camping! No bugs, no campfire smoke, all good! Just ordered my yarn. Woohoo!
I want to do this, but I think I’ll have to wait for month two. I just found out that the niece or nephew for whom I’m currently knitting a blanket may be arriving earlier than anticipated, so I need to focus on that.
You twisted my arm … just bought 2 colors of yarn for something. Not sure what just yet. Maybe Chadwick. I want to make it, but not sure which yarn to use.
I stopped by the shop today with two of my daughters to pick out my yarn for my Camp Loopy project. They had fun helping me pick coordinating colors, and enjoyed my tootsie rolls. AFter checkout, though, my 12 year old really had a good laugh about “Loopy Groupie” and “Camp Loopy.” I thought I’d share this smile with you!
The Catkin pattern dragged me in! The only problem is that when you go to camp, you GO (= away) to camp — and with Camp Loopy, I still have to go to work during the day. Will seriously cut into my knitting time — but I appreciate the nudge into this sort of 2-color project. Great idea! (If I can just keep the microwave s’mores out of the yarn……)
I think camp is my thing since I have air condition!! I’m in!!
Just placed my order for Camp Loopy! I’ll be making a Noro Striped Scarf, except with Malabrigo Worsted. Can’t wait! 🙂
Finally found a pattern…..I’m in and it will go camping!
Ok, this is my first Knit along!! I am doing Sedna’s Shawl in Madelinetosh Pashmina: Tern, Wellwater, and Ivy. Can’t wait to start, my hubby is having surgery on the 15, so i will have something to do in the waiting room!
Pam
I’m in! We don’t really have summer camps in Scotland, so this is my first camp. Really looking forward to it – have ordered my yarn and ready to go!
I received my yarn yesterday. DIC Romeo and malibu are just beautiful. I can’t wait to get started but, . . . I changed my mind as to what shawl I’ll make. I am going to make Roma instead of Whippoorwill. Is it June 15th anywhere yet?
I can’t believe that I almost missed this! I always loved summer camp when I was a kid and I have wanted to knit Catkin since I saw a picture of the sample. Thanks Sheri! I think this will be a lot of fun!
I got in JUST under the deadline! I’m going to Camp Loopy!!! Hooray! So Much Fun!
PS – the camp I went to as a kid was just shut down for being so horrible, but even though I remember the terrible smells from the latrine being so close to the kitchen (!!!) I also remember the fun midnight campfires with those soft puffy peppermints and picking raspberries in the woods and short-sheeting the cabin counselor and how she took it with a laugh! The swimming instructor was scary though.
I also received my yarn yesterday. It’s my first time using Sanguine Gryphon Bugga! It’s amazing! I’m Casting On the first stitches of Whippoorwill as I speak. Camp Loopy is such a fun idea! I’m looking forward to it.
Sheri,
Camp Loopy is a great idea! I’ll be knitting a Whippoorwill…I bought the yarn for this pattern a while back (maybe I should put dates on the skeins when they arrive so I’d know how long they’ve been in the stash…or maybe not?!)
I’m in – at the wire but I’m in!
Just when I finished the two shawls I had been knitting and sadly looking at the huge hole in my knitting time… along comes your knitting enticement…. YEAAAAA!!!
And, campfires, smores, jumping in the lake off a rope swing, hot dogs on the grill – well, who can resist! I’m soooo there!!
Already picked out my pattern (Cladonia) so I’m off to shop for yarn.
See ya round the fire ring fellow campers. Bring your BESTEST ghost stories… OR how bout a rousing game of “Top That”… :o)
My camp yarn arrived today. I can’t wait to get started on Wednesday!
