We need some color here in St. Louis – how about you? It has been raining for days and will continue to do so until Saturday. Now you know that I like rainy, cloudy days, but this is getting ridiculous. So I thought I’d share a fall photo that my hubby took last weekend. Click on this indian corn photo to make it big, and check out the kernals on the ear third from the left. Amazing! I’ve never seen a colorburst like that before.
Good news – because I’m within a day’s delivery from Dream in Color, we’ve been able to re-stock all of the Knitosophy line already. (And our wayward box of the BOLD colorway arrived. I took a quick photo of it here – beautiful blues – but I’ll make sure that the “official” photo gets taken later this week, too. I did add them to the site. I didn’t want you to have to wait on ordering it, as several of you have asked about it.) This new dye method turns out gorgeous colorways. If you were in our sock club in 2008, Veronica experimented with this method on the Spicy Kisses colorway that she did for us that summer. I’m having trouble deciding which colorway to knit up first. I like Butterfly and Superhero because of the color mixes. But Blossom is so tangy that you can almost taste it. And I love the thought behind Strength and Laugh. (Come to think of it, those would be good colorways to use for socks or shawls or scarves for people who need a little of that in their lives.) Hard to decide. I know you all had the same problem, because so many of you bought several of them! It will be fun to see your projects as you finish them up.
While I’ve been knitting at night, I’ve been watching the Food Network. Big mistake. Now I find myself wanting cake when I go to bed. I used to like white cake with chocolate frosting, but then I tried Kirstin’s Chai buttercream frosting on a spice cupcake and that immediately moved to my favorite spot. Although now that I’ve seen this “Decadent Chocolate” photo, I think I might need to try one of those for comparison. (Photo used with permission.) Unfortunately As You Wish Bakery doesn’t ship, but I will let you know if that ever changes. I’m definitely ordering platters of her cake balls for next year’s Spring Fling. I have an “in” with her mom, Janice, who comes down to help me with the Fling every year. I’m sure she’ll deliver. This month’s blog contest question – what is your favorite flavor of cake and frosting? I’ve saved some skeins full of color for prizes and we’ll draw for them next week, so leave your comment below to be entered!

Chocolate with chocolate. Simple, satisfying, and utterly delicious with a hot cup of tea.
My absolute favourite doesn’t have frosting, exactly. It’s a home made gingerbread cake, served with home made applesauce and freshly whipped cream. Yum. If I had to go with something with real frosting, I’d say spice cake with vanilla butter frosting.
I love red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, but my dad made a strawberry cake once for my mom’s birthday and it has since become a very very close second!
those cupcakes look amazing
Favorite flavor, chocolate with cream cheese frosting.
What else is there?
My favorite is chocolate with chocolate frosting. I love the picture of the indian corn!
I’m pretty traditional in my favorite cake flavor. I enjoy yellow cake with chocolate frosting. Tasty!
My favorite cake is definitely carrot cake with cream cheese frosting but a close second is the poppy seed cake with (real) egg custard frosting that my mother used to make.
Um…I don’t need the reminder of food either. However, now that you mention it, my DH’s birthday is coming up so a cake it will be, soon. My favorite is Devil’s Food with Cream Cheese frosting and then a sprinkling of chopped pecans on top. Not too sweet, but not tart either. Just right. 🙂
My favorite is lemon cake with lemon frosting. YUM!
My favorite cake is devil’s food with milk chocolate icing, the cake from a mix and the icing from a little plastic tub. Yes, I’m dull. Sue me =D
My favourite is chocolate cake with chocolate frosting.
Cake and frosting…that IS my favorite! But I guess I could pick carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.
Carrot cake with cream cheese icing! yum!
My favorite is my mother’s home made white cake with chocolate 7 minute frosting.
My favorite cake/frosting combination is one that my mom made almost every birthday for me. It is my grandma’s Chocolate Coffee Cake with Betty Crocker’s Vanilla Buttercream Frosting. If you don’t have an extremely sweet tooth, you won’t like this combination. You can practically feel your teeth rot when you eat it!!
tough question – I would have to say either yellow cake with chocolate frosting, or carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.
I’m not much of a cake person, but when I do eat it I like carrot cake with a buttercream frosting.
So much fun to read all these and wish I had recipes to go along with some of them – Now I’m having a terrible hankering to go and hit the cupcakery in our area. They have cupcakes called Black Tie which has a triple chocolate cake and a secret vanilla frosting which I KNOW has amaretto in it – delicious! They also have an Aztec Chocolate which is divine with the red chili peppers. The pumpkin spice with creamed cheese type icing ain’t too bad either LOL
YUMMMMM OOOOOO – Melody
Is there any other flavor besides chocolate cake with chocolate frosting?
Chocolate and Chocolate, dark is better than milk. I have a favorite recipe I use from the Barefoot Contessa. Now you’ve got me thinking about it, and I may have to make one.
Sheri,
Did you really have to post that picture of the cup cakes? That is all that I can think of. I’ve been trying to work after reading your blog at lunch time but those cup cakes keep popping up in my mind. FPS…..
OK how about chocolate with a mocha butter cream top.
Martha
I tested Dark Chocolate Cupcakes with Peppermint Chai Buttercream (using Peppermint Chai from Oregon Chai) and they were a huge hit! These will definitely be making an appearance at my Christmas party!
I’d have to say my favorite is plain old yellow cake with chocolate frosting. My favorite to make for everyone is funfetti cake with funfetti frosting. The colors seem to make me happy.
red velvet with cream cheese frosting….yumm!!
Homemade oatmeal cake with caramel frosting…but since I eat way too much if I make one, a local “cupcakery” has a Caramel by the Sea one (the sea is a few grains of sea salt to cut the sweetness) that is a safer alternative since I can buy just one.
German chocolate cake with stove top coconut frosting with walnuts
By far I love coffee flavored cake with buttercream frosting. Yum!
My favorite cake is an angel food cake with 7 min. boil frosting. My grandma made it every year for my birthday.
My favorite cake combo is Duncan Hines white cake mix with vanilla frosting. It’s a classic!
Pumpkin Cupcakes with creamcheese frosting (flavor of this month)
Raisin spice cake with cream cheese frosting!
carrot cake, cream cheese frosting. Can’t beat it!
White cake and white frosting with sprinkles! But I usually eat the batter before it gets put in the cupcake tins.
Not the least bit hard to decide: chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream frosting – just like Mom used to make for my birthday every year!
I’m boring. But I love white cake with buttercream frosting. Just a classic and so yummy.
I have tasted a lot of cupcakes in my day (and have the waistline to show for it–LOL!) but through all those fancy cupcakes, one stands out: the coconut cupcake with coconut frosting from Barefoot Contessa. But wait: it also has to be made by my friend Meslissa, who we call the Cupcake Fairy. That’s right, we live in the same building and she leaves plates of cupcakes on our doormat. All kinds and at unpredictable times of day (and night!). We love you, Melissa.
it depends. as a general rule, chocolate cake with chocolate sour cream frosting is my favorite.
but sometimes i want coconut cake with coconut cream cheese frosting.
and sometimes spice cake with vanilla frosting. (grandma’s recipe)
chocolate tuxedo cake with whipped cream frosting. yum!
red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting.
vanilla cheesecake with raspberries and blueberries.
i could go on and on and on. i love cake. i love to bake cakes. i love to have cake for breakfast.
My favorite is the cake my mom always made me for my birthday (at my request) when I was little: Banana Spice Cake with Sea Foam frosting. The Sea Foam is basically a brown sugar frosting.
personally, i have never met a cake i didn’t like… well, except coconut – the flavor is fine but the texture is, well, ick.
i have two favorite frosted varieties (that i would choose more than others, but consistent with the above statement, i rarely refuse cake of any kind) – the first is hummingbird cake and the second is red velvet – real red velvet, southern style – with a dose of cocoa and fluffy (not gooey) cream cheese frosting not white cake with red food coloring added.
my all-time favorite has no frosting – good ol’ pound cake. super yum.
Favorite cake is German Chocolate with German Chocolate frosting. But I’d choose any yarn as a substitute!?!
Chocolate………..anything chocolate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love vanilla cake with buttercream icing! Super Yummy!!
Along with a lot of others, carrot cake (with plump, moist raisins and carrot bits you can see) and cream cheese frosting is my #1.
However, if I’m in a chocolately mood…there’s a recipe in one of the Moosewood cookbooks for a vegan chocolate cake that is delicious (and soooo easy to make). I drizzle a bit of marshmallow topping on the cake. Mmmm!
Butter Pecan cake with Caramel frosting or anything from http://thesweetdivine.com/. Jenna’s cakes, cookies & cupcakes are award winning. She won the Energizer Bunny cake contest & was featured on local TV.
I can’t choose just one. My top two are Banana Cake with Whip Cream Frosting and Spice Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting…. There goes my diet:)
That corn is gorgeous!!
As far as cake. . . pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting.
Easy Peasy!
Chocolate cake with homemade peanut butter frosting!
Oh my favouite cake…uuumm….Poppyseed cake witha butter cream frosting with just a hint of Grand Mariner. Yummy
Devil’s food cake, definitely, and I’d give anything to taste my Aunt Irene’s boiled icing again. It was a white icing that was crisp on top and creamy soft underneath. Decadent.
Bristol farms has a deeeeeelicious white choclate cream cheese cupcake. I am also partial to spice cake and cream cheese walnut frosting, or chocolate cake with ganache frosting. Or german chocolate cake.
Hell, I like it all, as long as no fruit is invloved.
