A Little Color in the Day and a CONTEST!

corn1849_lorezWe need some color here in St. Louis – how about you? It has been raining for days and will continue to do so until Saturday. Now you know that I like rainy, cloudy days, but this is getting ridiculous. So I thought I’d share a fall photo that my hubby took last weekend. Click on this indian corn photo to make it big, and check out the kernals on the ear third from the left. Amazing! I’ve never seen a colorburst like that before.

DSC03085Good news – because I’m within a day’s delivery from Dream in Color, we’ve been able to re-stock all of the Knitosophy line already. (And our wayward box of the BOLD colorway arrived. I took a quick photo of it here – beautiful blues – but I’ll make sure that the “official” photo gets taken later this week, too. I did add them to the site. I didn’t want you to have to wait on ordering it, as several of you have asked about it.) This new dye method turns out gorgeous colorways. If you were in our sock club in 2008, Veronica experimented with this method on the Spicy Kisses colorway that she did for us that summer. I’m having trouble deciding which colorway to knit up first. I like Butterfly and Superhero because of the color mixes. But Blossom is so tangy that you can almost taste it. And I love the thought behind Strength and Laugh. (Come to think of it, those would be good colorways to use for socks or shawls or scarves for people who need a little of that in their lives.) Hard to decide. I know you all had the same problem, because so many of you bought several of them! It will be fun to see your projects as you finish them up.

k'scupcakeWhile I’ve been knitting at night, I’ve been watching the Food Network. Big mistake. Now I find myself wanting cake when I go to bed. I used to like white cake with chocolate frosting, but then I tried Kirstin’s Chai buttercream frosting on a spice cupcake and that immediately moved to my favorite spot. Although now that I’ve seen this “Decadent Chocolate” photo, I think I might need to try one of those for comparison. (Photo used with permission.) Unfortunately As You Wish Bakery doesn’t ship, but I will let you know if that ever changes. I’m definitely ordering platters of her cake balls for next year’s Spring Fling. I have an “in” with her mom, Janice, who comes down to help me with the Fling every year. I’m sure she’ll deliver. This month’s blog contest question – what is your favorite flavor of cake and frosting? I’ve saved some skeins full of color for prizes and we’ll draw for them next week, so leave your comment below to be entered!

  1. Chocolate. As in a good, moist, rich chocolate cake with a good, rich chocolate icing. No fruity crap. No nuts. Just chocolate.

Do you sense a theme here? 😉

  2. I love chocolate cupcakes w/chocolate frosting!!! Especially my family’s devils food cake recipe & homemade buttercream chocolate frosting!! Yummm!

  3. Better Than Sex cake – chocolate cake glazed with caramel while warm, then frosted with whipped cream and topped with toffee bits. Or, Creme de Menthe cake – white boxed cake mix with a few tbs green Creme de Menthe mixed in; bake according to directions, and while warm, spread 1/2 jar hot fudge topping on top. Frost with Cool Whip mixed with other 1/2 jar of hot fudge. MMMMMMMM

  4. Ooooh, cupcakes! I make an absolutely delicious devil’s food chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting. It’s especially good with chocolate chips thrown into the cake batter, or a half of a Reese’s on top of the frosting.

Earlier this week though I found a fantastic new recipe for Pumpkin Spice cupcakes with homemade Cream Cheese frosting. They’re amazing, and just perfect for the season.

  5. Oooh, my favorite is definitely red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. I look forward to it for my birthday cake every year. It sure makes getting another year older much easier. 😉

  6. Although I am not a big fan of cakes, I have come to like cream cheese icing on red velvet cake. I am bigger fan of brownies with walnuts!!!!

  7. My favorite cake is carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. It’s starting to feel like I may need to make a pumpkin roll soon though, there’s certainly a nip in the air around here!

  8. I would have to say black bottom cupcakes — with the cream cheese baked into the center! No icing needed — although you could dribble a little chocolate on top!

  9. When it comes to cup cakes I’m a chocolate on chocolate fan. At this time of year a good pumpking cup cake hits the spot as well – frosted or not!

  10. My favorite cake and frosting – can I pick 2? Red Velvet cake with cream cheese frosting and home made angel food cake with 7 minute icing. I love the stand up peaks on the 7 minute icing!

  11. I love carrot cake with a secret icing recipe that I also use as a fruit dip. It’s got kahlua and cream cheese in it. I’m intrigued by the chai cream frosting on spice cake though. Have you stumbled across a recipe somewhere or do you get it from a local bakery. I’m a chai tea nut so I’d love to try that.

  12. I’m more of a pie lover, but if I had to pick a favorite cake, it would be one I have made for my daughter’s birthday in February for several years – it is a strawberry cake and I frost it with whipped cream with a bit of the strawberry juice in it to make it pink! It is so easy, and it is a favorite at my house!

  13. I agree with Debbie D — gosh, do I love pie! For cake, I’ll vote carrot cake with cream cheese frosting or just about any kind of spice or coffee cake. 😛

  14. My fav is at a local coffee shop appropriately names Cupcake. It’s a mocha cupcake. Chocolate cake, coffee icing, and topped with a chocolate covered expresso bean.

  15. OMG, I luv so many varieties of cake that it is hard to choose! Those cupcakes sound sooo delish!! I guess that I will go with chocolate cupcakes with fluffy white frosting and be totally traditional (for once).

  16. I love cake and frosting so much! Let’s see….. I make a HO HO cake that I really love. It’s a two layer chocolate cake with white cream frosting in the middle and then a layer of white cream frosting on top which is then covered with a chocolate fudge icing layer. Mmmm, Mmmmmm, good!!!!

  17. I think my two current favorites are a white or yellow cake smeared with strawberry jam and topped with peanut butter frosting or a devils food chocolate cake with a white frosting covered in coconut. Both are sinfully rich and indulgent. ;D

  18. Harvery Wallbanger Cake- orange cake with orange juice, Vodka and Gallianno with a light glaze. Tastes just like the drink. Yummm

  19. I was thinking how I was going to answer because I like a lot of cakes, but I would have to think that the one I like the best is lemon cake with lemon icing. It just seems so refreshing. My next favorite is strawberry shortcake with whipped cream….that’s a cake, right?

  20. I haven’t been keeping on top of my blogs recently (b/c I was getting ready and going to Rhinebeck!) so I’m sure I’m probably too late for the contest, but I love cake/cupcakes so much that I had to comment (and, I wanted to add for you Sherri, that I get horrible cravings from the Food Network too).

A recent favorite is red velvet (with cream cheese frosting) though really I’m an equal-opportunity cake lover.

The Cake Love Love Cafe in Washington, DC has the best cupcakes ever

  21. Red Velvet with Cream Cheese Icing. Not any Cream Cheese Icing, this cream cheese icing. Mix together 1 cube room temp butter, 1 room temp 8 oz pkg cream cheese, beat until smooth and then add 1 small jar marshmallow cream and 1 tsp vanilla. Beat until light and fluffy. With out a doubt the worlds best cream cheese icing. In my opinion anyway.

  22. I have been a fan of chocolate cake with a creamy peanut butter icing for a very long time. There is something about chocolate and peanut butter that just makes my mouth water. Put that combination together with a glass of good Merlot and you have just won the lottery.
