We need some color here in St. Louis – how about you? It has been raining for days and will continue to do so until Saturday. Now you know that I like rainy, cloudy days, but this is getting ridiculous. So I thought I’d share a fall photo that my hubby took last weekend. Click on this indian corn photo to make it big, and check out the kernals on the ear third from the left. Amazing! I’ve never seen a colorburst like that before.
Good news – because I’m within a day’s delivery from Dream in Color, we’ve been able to re-stock all of the Knitosophy line already. (And our wayward box of the BOLD colorway arrived. I took a quick photo of it here – beautiful blues – but I’ll make sure that the “official” photo gets taken later this week, too. I did add them to the site. I didn’t want you to have to wait on ordering it, as several of you have asked about it.) This new dye method turns out gorgeous colorways. If you were in our sock club in 2008, Veronica experimented with this method on the Spicy Kisses colorway that she did for us that summer. I’m having trouble deciding which colorway to knit up first. I like Butterfly and Superhero because of the color mixes. But Blossom is so tangy that you can almost taste it. And I love the thought behind Strength and Laugh. (Come to think of it, those would be good colorways to use for socks or shawls or scarves for people who need a little of that in their lives.) Hard to decide. I know you all had the same problem, because so many of you bought several of them! It will be fun to see your projects as you finish them up.
While I’ve been knitting at night, I’ve been watching the Food Network. Big mistake. Now I find myself wanting cake when I go to bed. I used to like white cake with chocolate frosting, but then I tried Kirstin’s Chai buttercream frosting on a spice cupcake and that immediately moved to my favorite spot. Although now that I’ve seen this “Decadent Chocolate” photo, I think I might need to try one of those for comparison. (Photo used with permission.) Unfortunately As You Wish Bakery doesn’t ship, but I will let you know if that ever changes. I’m definitely ordering platters of her cake balls for next year’s Spring Fling. I have an “in” with her mom, Janice, who comes down to help me with the Fling every year. I’m sure she’ll deliver. This month’s blog contest question – what is your favorite flavor of cake and frosting? I’ve saved some skeins full of color for prizes and we’ll draw for them next week, so leave your comment below to be entered!

The “oakmonter” is my favorite cake (or cupcake version) it is from a local bakery and it is chocolate cream cheest cake (almost lke cheesecake) with a whipped mocha frosting between layers and as an icing topped with chunks of chocolate, decadant chocolate ganache, and a merrichio cherry (which I give to my husband-no cherries for me…just give me the chocolate) It is delicious and I have caused many people to share my love of this yummy cake by serving it at home and taking it to many a party :-). Yum…I think I might have to go get one today:-)
I have my own recipe for my favorite cake. It is made with french vanilla cake mix, a TBS of oil, 3 eggs, TBS lecithen granules, TBS wheat germ flakes, TBS flax, and a container of baby food. There is no frosting, but cream cheese with nuts could be added for a topper. This is a nice and healthy cake that tastes sweet and moist.
definate favorite is hummingbird cake (old fashioned spicey type cake) with cream cheese frosting. Think I’ll go to my pantry and look for ingredients now…
Although I am not a huge cake fan (although I watch Ace of Cakes religiously!) my favorite cake is lemon pound cake with lemon glaze that my husband and son make for my birthday.
German chocolate cake (which, as I’m German, is humorous because it’s not actually a German food – just made with German chocolate) which has a coconut pecan frosting.
Barring that, chocolate whipped cream cake – a moist, falling-apart-on-your-fork cake with a chocolate whipped cream icing, which is also spread between the layers.
Can you tell I like chocolate?
Carrot cake, cream cheese frosting. 🙂
Oh my goloshes, do I love cake, but I much prefer the portion-friendly cupcake. My favorites are Amy Berman’s Meyer Lemon Raspberry cupcakes (http://www.marthastewart.com/recipe/meyer-lemon-raspberry-cupcake), and my own recipe for Double Chocolate Chip cupcakes with Grandma’s Peanut Butter icing and shaved chocolate.
Real, honest to goodness red velvet cake with the cream cheese frosting. To DIE for! Though I’ll settle for chocolate with white butter cream. And for birthdays it must be store bought white on white…a childhood memory!
Mmm, now I’m hungry – carrot cake + cream cheese frosting. And now I’m even more eagerly awaiting my gall bladder removal so I can indulge again.
I think my favorite cake… it’s a tie between good old fashioned German Chocolate with the proper coconut frosting, and my Great Grandma’s applesauce cake… it’s like cake pancakes layered with cinnamon applesauce between them and then poured all over the top…
The Food Network is notorious for making my tummy rumble….. Favourite cake and frosting? Probably spice cake with cream cheese frosting, but personally I think you could put cream cheese frosting on a bicycle tire and I would happily eat it! Now you’ve got me thinking about chai frosting, as chai is my favourite hot drink (Stash double spice–mmm!). Moist chocolate cake with chocolate raspberry ganache never hurt anyone, either. Must stop thinking about cake!
I love Carrot cake with creamcheese frosting, but then theres the banana cream cheese cake too, and ooo, I love my moms no bake cherrie cheese cake and then theres this cafe in St. Paul that makes the most wonderful Trres leche!!!! Ok, I dont think I have one favorite, I LOVE THEM ALL!
I used to make a carrot cake with a lemon sugar glaze….hmmmm
Must go down to the kitchen to start baking!!!!!!!!!
Really, really moist yellow cake with thick, luscious vanilla frosting. I love vanilla. And too much frosting is not part of my vocabulary. I have been known to add other people’s scraped-off frosting to my own cake!
Of course I’m with everyone else when it comes to carrot cake, but i make a very special cream cheese frosting that has crystallized ginger and golden raisins in addition to the spices that i use in the cake… it is yummy!!!
I’m just wondering where to find the recipe for the Chai Buttercream !!!!!!!!!!! I’m searching the blog…….if anyone can help, please email !! QUICKLY!! LOL
Yarn cakes fresh off the winder are my favorite. 😉
As far as edible cakes … I’d have to go w/ carrrot cake with cream cheese icing. Love it! Hell, really wouldn’t turn down *any* cake/icing combination at this point. Reading your post and some of the comments made me HUNGRY!
Any cake is my favorite really – but there is something special about red velvet cake with butter cream icing.
Chocolate cake with white fluffy icing — yum.
Wow, just reading everyone else’s comments makes me want to bake and bake! For me, the best cake desserts have to include chocolate. And usually another flavor to set that off – coffee, almond, caramel or raspberry being among my favorites. Some of my favorite creations have involved ice cream as well. Like almond cake with coffee ice cream, chocolate sauce and raspberries. Or chocolate pound cake with no frosting at all. Or Marcel Desaulnier’s Death By Chocolate (he has published tons of cookbooks – you too can make it at home!). I could go on and on…
chocolate with mocha icing.
yummy
hungry
Yum! I’d love some of those recipes! My favorite is an old recipe–Texas Sheet Cake. It’s incredibly rich, has a chocolate walnut icing, and reminds me of my childhood. I’ve still got the handwritten, now butter-stained, recipe card.
I like plain vanilla (white cake) with vanilla buttercream icing especially the ones that Hey Cupcakes bakery makes. MY FAVORITE — ALWAYS!
My favorite flavor of cake and frosting is Pumpkin Spice Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting. Yum!!!
mmm….I love German Chocolate Cake…the frosting makes it delicious. If I’m not in a chocolate mood, then nothing beats lemon cake with lemon buttercream and a raspberry filling (that was my wedding cake, I loved it so much)
Angel food cake or white chocolate raspberry cheesecake. And most definitely whatever icing I make. 🙂 I think it’s Betty Crocker’s buttercream frosting.
My favorite is one that my grandmother made regularly – devil’s food cake with coffee/chocolate frosting.
Apple cake with a brown sugar glaze is great also.
Spice cake (also my dad’s favorite) with a thick, fudgy chocolate frosting that has a shot of espresso in it!
If you have the Joy of Cooking, it’s the Velvet Spice Cake (has yogurt or sour cream in it, yummmmm!) and whichever of the chocolate icings is recommended at the bottom of the recipe. The icing recipe will call for 1/4 c. of coffee – I substituted espresso for the darkest, chocolatiest, coffee-ist icing ever!
To die for. 🙂
Nothing beats dark fudge frosting!
For the cake combo….There’s one specific recipe for chocolate cake with fudge frosting that’s my all-time fav, but there’s also a special place in my heart for good’ole yellow cake cupcakes with chocolate frosting on top. 🙂
Lemon blueberry bundt cake is pretty darn good too.
Any wonder why I just had two cavities filled at the dentist?
For a cake and frosting cake, I really like marble cake with chocolate frosting. But what I really like is a black and white bundt cake (I use the recipe from Bundt Cake Bliss) with a scoop of vanilla frozen custard. It’s like cashmere for your taste buds; soft a velvety and wonderful!
Chocolate cake, chocolate frosting, scoop of chocolate ice cream, whip cream. 🙂 I’d love to win some color you’re giving away!
While I like chocolate cake (and those muffins do look awesome), I’m not a huge fan of icing. My favourites are a little less traditional: Maple Cake (discovered the recipe accidentally for that one!), Zucchini/Apple, Pumpkin with a chai spice frosting, or my all time favourite poppy seed, with a very thin layer of light lemon glaze for a frosting! Yummmm… ok, now I’m off to feed my sudden sweet tooth!
carrot cake or apple cake with cream cheese frosting. Actually cream cheese frosting is pretty good on just about anything.
Oh, my favorite is chocolate cake with a mocha frosting. The hint of coffee keeps it from being too sweet.
Thanks!
Ohhhhh Red Velvet cake with Chocolate cream cheese frosting….
Coconut cake with white mountain, or 7 minute frosting is my favourite. Reminds me of summers on Ohio with my grandmother. Best if made with a very old hand mixer on a warm sunny day with low humidity.
Brown sugar spice pound cake with carmel (cooked) frosting!!! Haven’t made it in years, but just thinking about it has my mouth watering…
Chocolate cake with just about any frosting. Though as a kid i had a thing for royal icing. I think that it is time to leave the butter on the counter to warm up…
My all-time favorite hasn’t changed since I was a child and that is chocolate devils food cake with a marshmallowy frosting. Ooey-gooey good!
Chocolate & Chocolate (hopefully with chocolate mousse filling!)
I’ve been on a cupcake making binge lately and my two absolute favorites (because I really cannot just pick one) are: Chocolate Cake with Almond Butter Frosting and Sassy Tea Cake with Lemon Buttercream. Both are incredibly, amazingly delicious!
Yellow cake with chocolate fudge icing. If they are cupcakes, even better.
I love a good banana cake with a cream cheese frosting. I have a recipe for this and it is delicious!
I would never turn down red velvet with cream cheese frosting. Never.
Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting! Just a thought: I think it would be cool to tally all of these preferences somehow and see which is chosen most. Not that you guys aren’t busy enough. 🙂
Princess cakes! They’re usually domed shaped white cakes with a whipped cream center then topped with rolled marzipan..mmmmmm
When I read about you watching the food network at night and then craving cake I had to tell you, me too. Its horrible. I love watching the foodnetwork, but it leaves me wanting cake too! (When I clicked on the comments, I was like why so many, a contest? then I finished reading where I left off. Slow the day after Rhinbeck I am.)
I’ve been loving cakes with no frosting lately, I don’t know why. But I do LOVE my mom’s apricot nectar cake finished off with powdered sugar. Soooo good! And easy.
Yum. At this time of year my favorite would be spice cake with cinnamon icing.
My all time favorite flavor has been black forest cake with all those yummy tart cherries between the moist chocolate layers! Topped with light whipped cream, dark chocolate shavings and that punch of deep red cherries… there’s nothing better! the colors are so rich and complementary that they draw you closer and practically beg you to eat it… mmmmm 🙂
