A Little Color in the Day and a CONTEST!

corn1849_lorezWe need some color here in St. Louis – how about you? It has been raining for days and will continue to do so until Saturday. Now you know that I like rainy, cloudy days, but this is getting ridiculous. So I thought I’d share a fall photo that my hubby took last weekend. Click on this indian corn photo to make it big, and check out the kernals on the ear third from the left. Amazing! I’ve never seen a colorburst like that before.

DSC03085Good news – because I’m within a day’s delivery from Dream in Color, we’ve been able to re-stock all of the Knitosophy line already. (And our wayward box of the BOLD colorway arrived. I took a quick photo of it here – beautiful blues – but I’ll make sure that the “official” photo gets taken later this week, too. I did add them to the site. I didn’t want you to have to wait on ordering it, as several of you have asked about it.) This new dye method turns out gorgeous colorways. If you were in our sock club in 2008, Veronica experimented with this method on the Spicy Kisses colorway that she did for us that summer. I’m having trouble deciding which colorway to knit up first. I like Butterfly and Superhero because of the color mixes. But Blossom is so tangy that you can almost taste it. And I love the thought behind Strength and Laugh. (Come to think of it, those would be good colorways to use for socks or shawls or scarves for people who need a little of that in their lives.) Hard to decide. I know you all had the same problem, because so many of you bought several of them! It will be fun to see your projects as you finish them up.

k'scupcakeWhile I’ve been knitting at night, I’ve been watching the Food Network. Big mistake. Now I find myself wanting cake when I go to bed. I used to like white cake with chocolate frosting, but then I tried Kirstin’s Chai buttercream frosting on a spice cupcake and that immediately moved to my favorite spot. Although now that I’ve seen this “Decadent Chocolate” photo, I think I might need to try one of those for comparison. (Photo used with permission.) Unfortunately As You Wish Bakery doesn’t ship, but I will let you know if that ever changes. I’m definitely ordering platters of her cake balls for next year’s Spring Fling. I have an “in” with her mom, Janice, who comes down to help me with the Fling every year. I’m sure she’ll deliver. This month’s blog contest question – what is your favorite flavor of cake and frosting? I’ve saved some skeins full of color for prizes and we’ll draw for them next week, so leave your comment below to be entered!

  1. I love Pina Colada Cake with cool whip and coconut frosting. Very easy to make and super delicious. You can even put alcohol in there if you’d like, my aunt actually got drunk off of it one year LOL, and she doesn’t drink!

  2. Hands down favorite is white cake with white frosting….not to say that I dont hanker for other types now and then but the white one is my favorite….The only time I like coconut is with coconut cake….in the fall I have to have spice cake at least once….banana cake is good occasionally…

  3. This is going to sound weird, but green tea and azuki bean! (If you’d asked me this a year ago, it would have been fruit cake). I really don’t have a sweet tooth and when I moved to South Korea, I realised there was a whole new world of cakes with far less sugar than in the west. They sound bizarre but really do taste good!

  4. Funny, I was just discussing this with my friends at breakfast the other day. It must be cupcake time! My favorite combination is lemon cake with coconut frosting. There’s something about lemon and coconut that’s just to die for! Fortunately for me (but unfortunate for my waist line!) there are oodles of cupcake shops in the Los Angeles area. One of them even let’s you create a ‘made to order’ cupcake. How cool is that?

  5. Cake. Shmake. I am all about the frosting. To me cake is just to offset the sugar high of frosting. My favs are carrot cake with cream cheese frosting if homemade. STore bought is definitely Costco cake 🙂

  6. I’m all about angelfood cake (especially the ones with the “confetti” in them…. Nice and light and fluffy, with some whipped cream and strawberries…. mmm..

    Crap, now I want cake!!

  7. Strawberry on Strawberry!! The best recipe ever is in the Cake Mix Doctor book. This book has great cakes that all start with a boxed mix. Wonderful cakes.

  8. My favorite kind of cake is one I get alot of this season. Pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting. I actually love anything pumpkin and just made pie for breakfast today! The new yarn is beautiful and I can’t wait to try it!

  9. My favorite cake is chocolate Texas sheet cake with the homemade icing that goes with it. If you’ve never had Texas sheet cake, it is not like other cakes. The texture is far less dense than normal cake, making it absolutely melt-in-your-mouth. The icing is quite runny at first and solidifies a bit as the cake cools. This lets the icing seep into the cake, making it even more soft and chocolaty. If you’ve had Texas sheet cake and it wasn’t melt-in-your-mouth delicious, it was made wrong. I’ll have to make you a proper one. There is just nothing like a big forkful of warm, pillow-soft chocolate cake dripping liquid chocolate on the way to your mouth. 🙂

  10. Oooohhh I love dark chocolate cake with minty frosting!!
But I also love cream cheese frosting on carrot cake — which is probably boring, but, well, you know.

  11. Dark chocolate with dark chocolate fudgy thick frosting or pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting! Pumpkin desserts are the best part of Fall!

  12. Wow do those cupcakes look absolutely delish!!!

I’ve always been a “chocolate” girl, but I think my favorite cupcakes are actually Cherry Chip cupcakes with a cream cheese frosting. My mom used to make me Cherry Chip cupcakes and birthday cakes when I was little, and over the years it has gotten harder and harder to find in the stores. My sister bought me the greatest birthday present yet when she found she could order me a CASE of the cake mix from Amazon!!! I think I need to go make some cupcakes now…

  13. Mmm…. chocolate cake with whipped cream frosting. And if you ever get near the Illinois side, try to get to a little grocery store in Jerseyville called Sinclairs. They have the moistest, most phenomenal cake and whipped cream frosting. I don’t care which one, chocolate cake or white. It’s awesome either way. 🙂

  14. Oooh, as much as I love chocolate everything, I think my favorite would have to be carrot cake with cream cheese icing, or red velvet cake with cream cheese icing.

  15. Great contest question! But man, reading the comments is making me crave something sweet now 🙂

I’m split between a spice cake w/ cream cheese frosting or a lemon cake with lemon cream cheese frosting as my favorite. Either way, I love my cream cheese frosting on cakes, for sure!

  16. My favorite cake is vanilla cake with buttercream frosting. Bonus points if it has strawberries in the center! Delicious 🙂

  17. What yummy photos! I like carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, but it’s all good with me! Thanks for the giveaway!

  18. The best cake I have EVER eaten is the Chocolate White Chocolate cake made by Simply Desserts in the Fremont District of Seattle http://www.simplydessertsseattle.com/.
It is a moist dark chocolate cake with a creamy but not too sweet white chocolate frosting topped with shavings of dark chocolate.. I cannot be left alone with a whole cake of that stuff….could lead to hospitalization!

  19. Amaretto. Amaretto and Amaretto.

Oh, and have I mentioned Amaretto, because, if I haven’t, AMARETTO!

(But, I am, first and foremost, a brownie lover.)

  20. Those cupcakes look amazing…

I would have a lot of trouble choosing between carrot cake with cream-cheese-and-just-a-hint-of-orange icing (haha, sorry, I’m Australian so I know it as icing, not frosting!) and gingerbread loaf with really tart lemon glaze… Mmmm…..

  21. Pumpkin spice cake with maple cream cheese frosting! It’s my favorite, but there’s not really a cake and icing combo that I’d turn down.

  22. My MIL’s chocolate cake and cream cheese frosting! I waited fifteen years for her to give me the receipe. It was the very first cake I ever made from scratch!

It is the most luscious, moist cake and only gets better as you eat it!

  23. my favorite (and birthday request) cake is ….

orange cake with orange flavored buttercream frosting!

    (gorgeous yarn on this post!)

  24. I’m a bit of a strange one– I’m very much not a cake person. The only sort I like is, of course, the most decadent of all, though: super rich fudgy chocolate with chocolate frosting, with bonus points for any chocolate ganache layers in the cake.

  25. My family has a cake recipe used for special birthdays and it’s amazing!!! Orange sponge type cake with an orange buttercream frosting and cream filling. Well worth the time it takes to squeeze all the oranges. Yum!!!

  26. My favorite cake of all time is spice cake, with buttercream, although I’m thinking that Chai buttercream is the way to go from now on. I’d love to find a recipe for spice chiffon cake, as that was my wedding cake.

  27. I love the yarn, and I can’t wait to order some! My favorite cake and frosting defintely speak to me spending way too much time with kids- Funfetti!

  28. I love cupcakes, especially, pretty ones! My favorite is chocolate anything. BUT chocolate mousse cupcake with rich chocolate fudge icing.

  29. My current favorite cupcake flavor is Rootbeer Float: it’s a vanilla cake with a scoop out of the middle, then the scoop-spot is filled with whipped cream, then the cupcake is frosted with rootbeer-flavored icing & topped with a gummy rootbeer bottle. A local bakery who experiments with unusual (but delicious!) flavors offered them on a whim, and I thought they were great.

  30. I agree, I love anything chocolate, but I think carrot cake with cream cheese
(home made) frostiing is the best. I add coconut nad chopped nuts to mine.

  31. Of the kinds of cakes that have frosting, my favourite is carrot cake with cream cheese frosting (a lot of my favourite cakes, like poppyseed cake, strawberry shortcake, and cheesecake, don’t have frosting).
