Big Projects and a CONTEST!

We’ve watched Rebekah put this beautiful Mitered Crosses Blanket together for Kevin over the past few weeks. Here they are at Knit Night last night, with the finished product. Made entirely out of Madelinetosh Vintage, it has us all wishing for one of our own! See how she did mirror images with the colors? With the border, this one took 13 skeins. Next she’s thinking of doing this in a baby blanket with a lighter yarn and six squares. I’m thinking Cascade Superwash Sport would be perfect for a baby blanket like this. Or the Worsted 220 Superwash. Even though I love this in the Madelinetosh Vintage, moms always like things that are machine wash and dry. Make it easy on them.

Our Camp Loopy Project Two is to make an 800 yd. + project (using at least one color from your country’s flag). I’m still waffling on projects (although now thinking of this mitered baby blanket…). I keep looking at all of my options and garnering ideas from everyone. So my contest question for this month is: What is the biggest project you have made and how many yards (or meters) was it? Mine was the crocheted afghan I made for Camp Loopy last year – 2600 yards. Leave your answer in the comments below and we’ll do a random drawing next week for some $25 Loopy gift certificates! (And maybe I’ll get some more ideas from your comments in the meantime.)

  1. My biggest (completed) project was a sweater that took about 1800 yards. I’ve started a Girasole blanket which will probably take more yarn, but it has been stalled for a while.

  2. I crocheted an Afghan out of rowan colorscapes and did a border in brown sheep lanaloft totaling @ 3385 yards. I used 16skeins of colorscape and 4 or 5of the brown sheep. I have to try and get a pic of it on ravelry.

  3. I have made many afghans including a fine gauge mohair afghan in a lace pattern with fringe for my father. I don’t recall the yardage used but it was a large afghan. He has passed away and I now have the blanket and it still looks like new.

  4. I knit a cardigan/coat several years ago with Dream in Color Groovy using about 14 or 15 skeins of yarn so over 1600 or 1700 yards. Great yarn to work with too.

  5. I am so impressed by the yardage of everyone! The largest project I’ve made to date is probably my color affection – somewhere around 1155 according to ravelry.

  6. Wow you got me thinking, so I popped over to my ravelry page and realized I’ve only made one pattern with more than 800 yrds in my knitting life. I couldn’t believe that. Anyway it was my Coraline sweater finished last January. It took 960 yards of Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool.

  7. My largest project has been a Horseshoe Afghan – first time cabling as well as knitting anything larger than a scarf/baby hat. Right now, it has used up 1500 yards (but knitting with two yarns, so really it has been 3000 yards), but I’m thinking about adding to it – the dorm beds can get to be rather long!

  8. I once made a queen-sized granny square bedspread. It draped over the sides and foot down to the floor. I have no real idea of how many yards I used, but Ravelry has similar projects listing 7,000-10,000 yards in those. So let’s go with somewhere around there.

The crazy part? That was a gift – so I’m making one for me. yowza.

  9. My largest was a crochet afghan. It was one of my first and took about 2000 yards. It was fun and fast. Still keeps us warm during the winter months.

  10. My largest project is a Ten Stitch Twist afghan I made of all my worsted weight scraps. I do not know how many yards but the afghan weighs about 5 pounds and fits on a queen bed.

  11. Wow! The biggest project I completed was my husband’s sweater. (He’s a big guy.)
I used 1791 yards of worsted weight cotton silk yarn.
    Like I said he’s a big guy.
He absolutely loves his sweater and I have vowed not to make him another one for a few years. 😉

  12. The biggest project I’ve made would have to be the Rambling Rows afghan I made for my sister. It took approximately 1600 yards of worsted weight yarn. I have a picture of it in my Ravelry projects.

It was a big hit! maybe too big…… I’m in the process of making one for my sister-in-law now.

  13. Wow. I am in awe of what everyone has made! The blanket that Rebekah made is gorgeous! I have crocheted several blankets and sweaters over the years that took hundreds of yards. As far as my knitting goes though, the largest project so far is Camp Loopy project 1!!! 400 yards is a lot for me and knitting!!! I am really loving how it is turning out though. “The Sunlight Shawl For Sad People”. Mine is in Shibui sock in Finch and random striping with Ron Weasley from Woolen St. Mills. Of course, Camp project 2 will knock out camp project 1 with 800 yds!!! Have a good weekend everyone!!!!

  14. Mine was a black alpaca cape (not so fondly called the Never Ending Cape From H**L or NECFH). Took 1650 yards, but I had to knit it twice (ugly story all the way around), so the total should really count as 3300. Haven’t knit with black since and am still in therapy. 🙂

  15. I have knit 4 large afghans in the past they ranged in yardage from 2,000-2,500 yards each. I knit my son an afghan as well that was all odds and ends in a ripple pattern (his choice) not sure how much yardage it used but it was huge!

  16. wow, what a humbling list. i think mine is probably my traveling sweater which took 1850 yards of sport weight yarn. i have made some small blankets but have no idea what the yardage was with those.

  17. One spring and summer I worked on my largest project ever. I had made an afghan for my son’s birthday – which is in February. Thinking that it would be a great idea to make one for my daughter’s upcoming birthday, I set about making a huge afghan. Unfortunately, for this project, her birthday is in JULY!!! OMG!! That thing was so heavy and so big and so annoying! I finally finished and sent it off to her in time for her birthday, but never again have I made an afghan! It was endless and the yardage was beyond quantifying.

Recently, she sent me a picture of that afghan which she is still using. I had thought I would never make another, but her picture made me smile and now I know it’s just a question of time before I start another. But it will definitely be made during the chillier months of the year! For sure.

  18. My biggest knitting project was a Pi shawl that took about 1322 yds.

I’ve crocheted afghans in the past but don’t know how many yards they took. Oldest son is still bugging me to make them another one.

  19. My biggest project was a sweater I knit for my husband, about 5 years ago, from Noro Silk Garden. It must have been 1400 yards or so. I loved knitting every stitch, and he still wears it!

  20. I don’t know if it was the biggest, but it was definitely the most complicated.
The bee fields shawl with something like 1200 yards of laceweight.

  21. My biggest finished project was a huge knit afghan that had a life of its own and grew to over 3500 yards!

  22. I make a family/baby blanket, 1248 yards. Each square was made from organic cotton and was designed for its pattern from washcloths and pattern books. Blanket was organized so each row is a season and the center row is about the family. I hope you like it!

  23. My largest project to date was my Elyisum sweater. I think I used a little under 900 yards of Malabrigo Worsted. My notes on my rav project page aren’t too clear so I’m not sure about exact yardage. Note to self – take better notes. 🙂

  24. The biggest was the Garter Stitch Blanket by Elizabeth Zimmerman, using Jared Flood’s brilliant ‘notes’ – almost 5000 yards and 5 pounds of Eco Wool – talk about warm!

  25. Some neat ideas here! My biggest project was a log cabin quilt-type afghan for my daughter that took 9 skeins of Dream in Color Smooshy (and took nearly every bit of the yarn!). I was pleased with how it turned out, although I thought I’d never finish it. I have a son heading off to college this fall so need to start one for him but I might look a little harder for one that knits op faster!

  26. My largest project – that I’ve actually finished! – was my Vortex shawl that I made for Camp Loopy last year. I’ve got a couple of shawls OTK right now that will top that….eventually. 😀

  27. I am not a blanket knitter, so my total yardage isn’t all that impressive. Probably the most I used was on the raglan sweater I made for my 6’4″ husband a few years ago, and that came in around 1800 yards.

  28. Only 950 yards – a cabled sweater vest for the husband. Wow! I feel like a slacker or at least someone who shies away from larger projects. I did do a larger version of the Hemlock Ring, but that still only got me to about 900 yards.

  29. My biggest project is still a WIP. It’s the Realta blanket made out of at least 18 colors of Cascade 220. My daughter will probably be in college when it’s done. LOL.

  30. I made an Op Art blanket for my cousin, which used 1230 yards (according to my Ravelry project page, and how did we live without Ravelry?). By my Rav, I make mostly smaller things!

  31. The largest project that I have done within recent memory was a Sothia shawl for last year’s Camp Loopy Project #3. It used approximately 900 yards. I made an Aran sweater many years ago that probably was close in yarn usage.

  32. I’m a knitting wimp. Probably my biggest project so far is around 400 yds. Chalk it up of being a relative newbie. The Camp Loopy project #2 will be my biggest so far, Color Affection, at around, what, 1100 yds?

  33. I don’t know the exact yardage, but I crocheted a Queen size afghan for my mother 20 years ago. Haven’t made another one that size since.

  34. I’m another one who doesn’t know exact yardage, but it is over 2000 for both a worsted weight afghan (finished a few months ago after several years of avoidance) and a nearly-finished cardigan for my mom (Therapi by Stefanie Japel), also worsted weight. In neither case have I weighed the leftover yarn. I probably will for the cardigan once it’s sewn up.

  35. i’m making a blanket for my son that has used at least 4400 yards (20+ skeins of cascade 220) of yarn thus far. Fortunately I am almost finished. I’ve made lace projects using close to 2000 yards but worstd weight projects seem to take forever.

  36. I made two Girasoles at the same time for two of my sons and their families — 2000 yds. Loved the pattern — but two is enough.

  37. My biggest project is the WendyKnits Shetland Pi Shawl KAL. It’s not quite done yet…but it’s used more than 1200 yards so far. I need to get that back into the rotation.

  38. My biggest project was a large “patchwork” knit baby blanket made in blocks. Each block was a letter of the alphabet or a number (0-9). Then I crocheted a shell border around the entire blanket. I used about 1100 yrds of Plymouth Baby Bunny.

  39. Hmm, good question. I made multiple sweaters back in colleage and didn’t keep track of yardage then, so those I am not sure about; also a friend’s wedding shawl which was large (but I have no idea about yardage). Since I’ve been keeping track, it looks as though the largest project was one of my Girasole shawls (you saw this one at a Spring Fling!): that one was 1495 yards.

But right now I’m working on a project (out of Loopy Ewe yarn!) that will be my biggest yet, for sure: 2200 yards, I’m estimating, a knitted afghan, Fibo-Optic. http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/fibo-optic

  40. My biggest so far was a tunic using 895 yards, I do have a shawl on the queue that will take a lot more than that but it’s not started yet. Funnily enough my biggest so far was from last years Camp Loopy

  41. The biggest project I have ever knit was a FLAK Aran sweater. It took me almost a year to knit and used about 2500 yds of yarn. It’s still one of my favorite and warmest sweaters!
