March Blog Contest – What’s Your Favorite…

dsc02429… mug? Or teacup?  Or your preferred container for hot beverages? This is my favorite. Some of you may remember that I have a habit of over-buying mugs/cups. I don’t know what it is.  But I have found my favorite and I think my mug-buying days are over. (Unless this one breaks.  But I know where to get another one of them.) I love the size of this, the weight of it, the feel of it, and the colors. (Mine came from here. I love their work and have purchased several things from them.) Since I’m so attached to this mug, it made me wonder if others of you have a favorite?  Tell us about it in the comments below for this month’s blog contest. We’ll randomly draw the winners from the comments and will announce them next Friday.

Today’s recipe is one of those comfort food types of things. (Good taste plus pasta = comfort.) It makes a lot and there are all kinds of things in there.  Just add some fresh fruit or a big salad to the menu and you have a meal.

dsc02425Pasta and Cabbage Casserole

1 pound spaghetti noodles, cooked al dente
3 cups shredded frozen hash browns, thawed
1 lb. sausage (or 3 chicken breasts, cooked and cubed)
2 Tbl. olive oil
1 bag of shredded cabbage slaw (or 1/2 head cabbage, shredded)
1 large onion, chopped
3 cloves of garlic, minced
1 cup (or can) of chicken broth
4 Tbl. butter
2 cups Parmigiano Reggiano Cheese, shredded
1 cup sharp cheddar, shredded
(Want more color? Add broccoli to the recipe. Yum!)

Brown sausage in skillet and drain. Add olive oil to the pan and stir in onion, garlic and cabbage, cooking until tender (about 10 minutes). Add chicken broth and heat through.

In large bowl, combine cooked noodles, hash browns, butter, 1 cup cheddar, 1 cup Parmigiano Reggiano, and cabbage/sausage mixture and mix well.  Turn into a 9 x 13 pan and bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.  Add the last cup of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese to the top and bake for 5 more minutes.

Because I don’t have quite enough knitting projects “in progress”, I picked up a book last night and have decided to make a Noro Chevron Sleeve Cardigan from Knitting Noro. Just for fun. (Although I’m not sure why I just admitted that to you. I ought to have kept quiet about it until I was almost finished.  One day I’ll learn.)

dsc02432People were eating chocolate here today. How do I know? There’s evidence on the floor. And just because there were kisses by my favorite mug in the photo, don’t be fooled. It was totally for eating scale so that you could get an idea of the mug size. (The carpeting looks a little ugly close up, don’t you think? It’s a good thing that there is a lot of beautiful yarn and chocolate around here to distract people from looking down.)

  1. My favorite mug is the one I got from the B&B my husband and I went to for our honeymoon. It’s pretty much just a standard glass mug with an etching of the place on there, but the feel of the mug is nice, and it always reminds me of the fun time we had there.

  2. I love my giant red mug. It’s great to fill it with hot tea or coffee and curl up with my knitting or a good book!

  3. I LOVE mugs, its a passion of mine. My favorite right now is a handthrown pottery mug that has a handle shaped much like yours. Handles are very important to me for the comfort. I want at least three of my fingers in the handle. The shape is rather hourglass and it holds 14 oz. It is a lovely warm beige with blue and brown designs. I can’t remember specifically where I got it, I just know it was in Seagrove the pottery meca of North Carolina.

  4. My favorite is a handmade pottery one with lovely purple marbled glaze. It doesn’t have a handle but fits a perfect cup of coffee. I love to warm my hands with it when I have my coffee. My second favorite is my Loopy Latte mug 🙂

  5. I just know my favorite mug would be the blue Loopy mug if I had one. I lusted after that for sometime and was bummed when you said you wouldn’t be selling it do to shipping problems. My favorite mug is my travel mug by Thermos. Keeps my hot beverage hot for hours and hours.

  6. Hmm, my favorite mug is ancient and I made it myself. I had just gotten through an unexpected divorce and having just been thwacked, I decided I needed all the help I could get. I went to one of those paint-it-yourself places and made it robin’s egg blue with purple spots (my ex would have made fun of me for something so juvenile and that’s why I did it–because so much of what I loved, he looked down on). I painted a cute little flower on the bottom, inside. That way I could have a little sweet surprise when I finished my coffee, or cereal or ice cream 🙂 It’s still in one piece and so am I. New opportunities grew out of all that bullsh*t and I’ve been grateful ever since!!

  7. White mug with royal blue rim- part of a set of dishes I bought years ago. It’s a good size for holding and warming the hands. I like white mugs in general- I can guage the strength of the teamore acurately.

  8. my favorite mug is small and orange and has a simple bunny face on it. I want to have a red mug like Dr. House often uses. that might be my new favorite mug if I ever buy one.

  9. I have a couple of favorite mugs. One I bought in a small town in West Virginia when I was attending the funeral of a good friend who was a potter. The other is one that my husband (also a potter) made specifically for me in my favorite green glaze.

  10. Your mug looks beautiful and I may have to check out their website. 🙂 My favorite mugs are my Longaberger mugs, I have many of them and now that Spring is almost here I need to switch out my snowman mugs for my spring flower/fruit ones.

  11. Love a mug. My favorite is a little black one with a tan interior and two green leaves on the side. I use it for my green tea.

  12. I am a geek well and truly. I have a cute chocobo mug that I use to make some fairly decadent hot cocoa in, because it is a bit smaller than average. I also have a very beautiful Japanese mug with the image of a crane (I think… I don’t use it very often, because I don’t want to accidentally break it) in stone and blue enamel. For some reason I can’t really drink anything in the Japanese mug except for tea. It’s just too odd.

  13. I have a mug from Dancing Pig Pottery (a one-woman operation in Maryland) that’s a lovely green with Celtic knotwork incised around the top edge. I also have one from DPP that features two ravens flying with the moon above them. DPP’s designs are all heavily Celtic influenced and have that wonderful handmade/fits the hand feel.

  14. My favorite mug is one that my daughter gave me for Mother’s Day a few years back (quite a few) that has the word Mom on it in many different languages. Everytime I use it, it’s like getting a hug from her 🙂

  15. Right now, it’s my heavy, wide-lipped, dark brown mug from Peet’s Coffee. Something about the weight makes it feel right on an early, dark morning!

  16. Mine always has to be insulated and big. Last summer I picked one up from Target in a nice metallic rose color with two key features. It seals closed without leaking and it has a carabiner. That way I could hang it on the hook of my scooter without it spilling! During the winter I have robbed the carabiner for my sock bag. Funny thing is, my best friend showed up with the very same mug! We must be *really* good friends!

  17. Right now my favorite mug is the Loopy mug that came with the Second Anniversary Kit- I think that’s the right kit! (I love kits!) I also like my china mugs made in Dunoon Scotland, but mostly I use my Loopy mug these days!

  18. I am a teacher and I write a lot of college recommendations. My favorite mugs are ones that former students have given me (as thank you gifts for writing those letters) that have the name of the students’ colleges on them – they remind me of many great students and I always send positive thoughts to those students when I use the mugs.

  19. I’ve got two favorite mugs. 🙂 One my mom gave me (she knows me so well) that says “A Woman’s Place is in Command.” The other one is of The Snow Bunnies comic that has two bunnies looking into a snow-covered cabin window at night saying “And they call us animals!”

  20. I have several starbucks mugs that I drink out of all the time. My favorite one for home is a tall red one with stockinette st in the background. My favorite travel mug is silver with a black handle and black gripper strip around it… and leakproof can’t have coffee leaking on the yarn in my bag.

  21. My favorite mug is from the set of dishes my dh bought for my birthday a few years ago. They came from Macy’s, of all places, but look handmade. The line is called Romancing Provence and they are totally my style. I love that dh knows what I like! I have to make sure not to break them, though. They’ve been discontinued! 🙁

  22. My favorite mug is one that my daughter and son-in-law purchased for me in Ireland. It is rather thick and good for keeping my Starbucks HOT! What is so precious about it is the raised sheep are depicted in four different weather conditions typical of Ireland. Plus, it is a wonderful shade of blue.

  23. My favorite mug would have to be my Loopy mug, but running a close 2nd, 3rd, and 4th are 3 mugs from a local potter by the name of Jenny Cartee. She makes them with the logo of our local coffeeshop(Broad River Coffee Company).

  24. I can’t pick just one mug (no tea-cups for me). I have several mugs that were purchased at various arts festivals in State College PA (Go Lions). All are hand-crafted and resemble the one in your photo. I also like my Starbucks mugs. I love drinking out of different mugs, depending on my mood, and they always make me happy! 🙂

  25. My absolute favorite mug of all time is either one of a handmade pair that my husband and I bought on our last trip to Ireland. It is perfectly rounded to fit in my hands, with fluting at the top and a thick bottom so I do not burn my sensitive fingers when it is full of hot tea. The handle swoops away from the body of the mug with a small disc of clay at the top for my thumb so it has perfect balance even when it has been filled up to the very top. It has beautiful blue and rusty brown glazing with castle arches and swirls raised up off of the body. The very best part of my favorite mug is that it reminds me of that rainy day last February when we ducked into the Kilkenny Shop in Dublin to buy it!

  26. I seem to have a mug fetish, also. My husband and I buy a mug from our travels assuming they’re decent looking. They make a great travelogue. Unfortunately, I’ve run out of space to display them. For drinking purposes, I have two favorites. The first is from Cooper-Mays Pottery in Pittsboro, NC. It’s a teal color and the shape is such that the middle is narrower than the top and bottom, which allows the fingers to comfortably fit around the middle. Also, the handle is big enough to allow all fingers access. My second favorite is from Hershey, Pa. I like it because it holds a tremendous about of liquid. It’s bulbous in shape with a large opening which allows the coffee to cool to a drinkable temperature in a short amount of time. Some days are hectic, and I can’t wait for my Cooper-Mays mug to cool.

  27. I have a weekday favorite mug – navy blue with “Well behaved women rarely make history” written on the outside. Weekday cause it is the right amount of coffee before work. Then there are the two weekend mugs – both with flamingos on them. Slightly larger, since there is usually more time to sip my coffee and knit while slowly waking up.

  28. So far I haven’t found a “favorite” mug. I keep looking and have to say that I do like the style of your mug that I actually went to visit the site you got it at. I’m tempted as I like good size mugs, not those small ones that hardly hold anything.

  29. My favorite, favorite is a brown mug with a moose on the side that I bought in Colorado many years ago. It is so comfortable to hold, even full of strong, black coffee….

  30. My favorite mug is pretty new, actually! I wandered into one of my favorite local cooking stores during our annual downtown chili cook-off a couple weeks ago. I spotted a beautiful mug- light purple background (with a darker purple and light pink stripe at the bottom and top) with an overlay of light purple and silver leaf outlines. The best part- it was $5! In a store loaded with beautiful, albeit a little esoteric, unitaskers of which Alton Brown would disapprove. It’s a little taller and narrower than traditional mugs but I love it SO much!

  31. My favorite mug is my red TLE mug I got at spring fling last year. Each time I use it I remember
    how much fun I had.

  32. I have different favorite mugs depending on what I’m drinking! For tea, I like a larger mug with a more rounded shape – the TLE Fling mug is perfect for tea. For coffee, I prefer a more traditional straight-sided mug and my Texas Ranger mug with my name on it is definitely at the top of that list.

(I also have a collection of coffee mugs from companies that I have worked for that are now out of business ;>)

  33. We have about 20 mugs in our cabinet, about half are ones I had made but the rest are from many different potters. My very favorite is by Catherine and Tracy Dotson, unfortunately they are not making that pattern any more.

  34. My fav mugs are the Longaberger mugs! I just love the feel and size of them. They also have great colors! :o)

  35. I favorite mug is the one with my nephew ‘s picture. This way he is close to me every day even though we are more than 2000 miles away.

  36. I have a mug that is very similar to your favorite. It’s probably my most recent mug purchase… about 2 years old & I still love it. My Lucy mug is also a favorite. Do you have a Lucy mug?

  37. I have two favorite mugs. The first is a Billy Joel mug I bought at one of his concerts a few years ago. Every time I use it, it brings back fond memories of my little brother and I at that concert right before he left for the Marine Corp. He’s leaving for Afghanistan next month, so I know I’ll be using that mug practically every morning, trying to remember the fun we had that night instead of thinking about how dangerous it is over there.

My second favorite mug was a gift from my boyfriend this past winter. It’s a Starbucks mug that has cables on it. I love it because it looks like knitting!

  38. I don’t have a nice mug right now (I used to have a pottery one that fit my hands really well, but it got broken). My favourite at the moment is a freebie that my grandma got ten years ago or so from the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool.

  39. My favorite mug is a handmade, stoneware mug made by the potters of Strawberry Banke in NH. Every summer they have a booth at a wonderful craft fair in NH and I add to my collection.

  40. My favorite mug is the one I received as a gift. It’s from Starbucks and has knitted cables on it. 🙂

  41. I have a really tall pale blue mug that says “IM AWAKE” down the side of it. It’s great for all kinds of things. I use it when I’m really thirsty or really sleepy. It’s cute.

  42. I love the look of tea cups, but they just aren’t functional for me.
My favorite mug is an old Disney mug, it’s huge almost 4 inches in diameter. The handle is big enough that all 4 fingers can go through and the mug is so big I can completely wrap both hands around it, and I don’t have to worry about stopping my knitting to get a refill. The inside lip reads “Mornings Aren’t Pretty” and the outside is Mickey, half awake, in his bath robe, and notes to point out “morning ear droop”, “twisted tail”, “goofy old slippers” and “cheesy robe”, holding a coffee cup and a doughnut.
My runner up is a new mug from a friend, it reads, “A good friend knows how you take your coffee, a great friend adds booze”.
