Late Night Owl or Early Bird & a CONTEST!

DSC01780.JPGIt always amazes me that so many of you are up late at night when I do a Sneak Up. I’m definitely a Late Night Owl and when I do a Sneak Up late, like I did last night, it’s fun to see how many of you are still up. (Of course for those of you overseas, it’s a whole different ballgame.) Sometimes being a Night Owl has its perks, and it was definitely time for a late night one. We hadn’t done one at that time in awhile. Last night we put up lots of fun stuff:

  • Yarn Pirate Merino Tencel
  • Lime & Violet Sasquatch Sock
  • sKNITches Syncopation Striping
  • Gypsy Knits BFL
  • All Things Heather
  • Great Adirondack Silky Sock
  • J.Knits Superwash Me Sock
  • Malabrigo Lace (about 20 colors – and about 25 more on the way!)
  • ShibuiKnits
  • Mrs. Kwitty’s Sock Sacks and Pocket Pals
  • Lawre’s Laine BigBags
  • Offhand Designs Bags
  • Sock Blockers
  • New Wendy Knits patterns

And everyone was very quick to find it. We’ll be working on all of your orders today! (Note – the sKNITches is sold out already. This was Sam’s last self-striping order for us, but she has promised that she’ll keep doing Loopy’s Red Striping Socks in the future! And of course we’ll continue to have her wonderful semi-solids and variegated yarns here.)

DSC01832.JPGI had a fun trip down to Fort Lauderdale with Web Guy over the weekend. Amazingly (sadly) I didn’t finish my DC KAL sweater on the long car ride. I really can’t explain this. I am not a super fast knitter, but I think I knit along at a pretty good clip. I didn’t knit for the first few hours because we were talking and I was watching the scenery, but after that I was knitting pretty much the whole time. I’m still focused on being done by June 1st, though. Hopefully next Wednesday I’ll have a photo. Have you checked out all of the sweater photos that are rolling in from the KAL? It’s SO fun to see what everyone has done! Keep the photos coming. If you get yours into our photo gallery by June 1st, you will get the bonus. (Check back on the blog on June 1st – we’ll let you know what your reward is for completing it by June 1st.) We will continue to stock the DC Classy for you, and we also have a whole bunch of Malabrigo Worsted on order, because I think I need to knit a sweater out of that, too. We’ll start up another KAL this summer (not a sweater this time – it’s too hot to have a sweater sitting on your lap while you knit) – watch here for details in a couple of weeks. (Like the squirrel photo? Apparently you Floridians have very friendly squirrels. This guy looked like he was going to jump up on the railing to see us.)

-15Look where Loopy landed this week – Alaska! My Mum-in-Law took Knitting Daughter up there to visit Wonder Husband’s sister and her husband. (That would be KD’s aunt and uncle.) What a nice graduation gift, don’t you think? Loopy is having a marvelous time. I’m not sure he’s going to want to come back from there. We’re keeping our fingers crossed. I hope you have some fun plans for Loopy this summer. A few of you have already started turning in your photos with Loopy. (He has already met Lucy Neatby and now he wants to dye his fleece purple, FPS.) The postcards will continue to go out in orders until they run out. We’re only putting them in your first order after May 1st, but leave us an order note if you need another one in a later order. We had a lot of fun seeing where he went last summer, and we know you’ll rise to the challenge this summer as well.

This month’s contest is easy and follows along the question of Night Owl vs. Early Bird. Leave your answer in the comments and we’ll use the random number generator to pick a winner one week from today. Here’s the two part question: Are you a Night Owl or an Early Bird? And what would be your ideal time of day or night for a Sneak Up to go up? (Note – those of you who are regulars here, have kind of figured out that Sneak Ups normally happen in the earlier part of the week – M – W, but we do try to vary the times in order to catch everyone at their best time at one point or another.)

  1. Totally an Early Bird here. Mmmm… My ideal time of day for a Sneak Up would be 5:45 a.m. Eastern time. Not very likely, eh? 😉

Glad you had a nice trip with College Guy!

  2. I am so definitely a night owl. I can never get myself to go to bed early, it’s like I hit a groove around 10pm. And I just love the feeling of quiet and stillness around when it’s really really late.

I won’t be placing any orders any time soon thanks to a seriously tightened budget, but I think my ideal sneakup time is either when I’m at work or later at night – 9 or 10pm. I’m usually at the computer during those times. 😛

  3. I’m a Night Owl who through various circumstances have been forced to become an Early Bird – it’s tough when you are getting up just about the same time your body really wanted to go to bed. Best sneak Up time for me is after 7 p.m. but before 10 p.m. – early to rise – early to bed. Thanks to you and the elves for all your hard work on our behalf.

  4. How about 6:30 p.m. EDT or 5:30 St. Louis time (?). Just home from work with a day’s earnings burning a whole in my pocket. Pam

  5. I’m both. I used to have a rule about not knitting after 10:30 pm but now I’ve moved that to 11:30pm. And I wake up around 6am (to get my daughter on the bus in time). So does that qualify for both? As for the best Sneak Up time, I don’t check them at home too much (dial up), so during work hours is best for me! (though not so good on my bank account!)

Glad you had a nice time!

  6. WHO-WHO-WHO-WHO-WHO-WHOOO! I’m a night owl although my roomie at Fling might not agree (I wasn’t taking my naps). I was awake and knitting when the really late night sneak up occurred. I’d already closed my browser because I didn’t expect one that late and it was really late in the East Coast. The ideal sneak up time for me after 9 pm eastern time.

Malabrigo worsted–hmmm–since I’ve ordered the Imogen pattern (thank you, goatlady), I think I’ll be having some of that. I was gonna use DIC but I think Malabrigo will be a nice change since I’ll have knitted 2 sweaters with it.

Little Loopy also met and posed for a picture with the lady from Misty Mountain Farm (sorry I can’t remember her name) while in the Virginia Blue Ridge.

Get busy knitting that KAL FPS!!!

  7. I’m a night owl all the way… I would rather stay up late to get something done than have to get up early. I don’t really have an ideal time. I think it is so fun having the sneak ups at different times and keeping us all on our toes.

  8. I’m more of a late-afternoon/early evening owl. I’m at my most energetic between the hours of 4:00-9:00 PM. I think my ideal sneak-up times are between 9-5 on Monday-Friday, since I’m guaranteed access to my email at those times! Otherwise, between 8-9:30 at night is pretty good too, that is the usual time I’m on my computer at home.

  9. Alaska! How lucky. I love Alaska. Me, I’m an early bird. I can’t sleep past 8:30, and I’m usually in bed by 11. I love getting up early and getting things done. I don’t function well after the sun’s set– it feels too late to get anything started! I’ve never caught a sneak up, so I guess that might be my fault (=D), but maybe if one appeared around 7 am (EST), I’d hit it.

  10. I am a night owl although right now I am having to work early. I would say a sneakup around eleven is okay with me. I now need to save my money since we have decided to go to DC in July. So Loopy is getting a trip! Wonder how helful my sons will be when I decide to take a picture!

  11. I am a night owl, but I mostly catch sneak ups at work between 8:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., because I rarely turn my computer on once I get home.

  12. I am most definitely a night owl. I think it comes from years of working night shift as an RN. I think it has messed me up for life. Unfortunately, I like my eight hours of sleep so it is hard for me to get up in the morning. I often get up, get the kids ready for school and then take a nice long nap. If I could sleep until 9 every morning I would be one happy person.

I like the surprise of the sneak ups. I feel fortunate if I am sitting at the computer when the alert comes in the email, but I tend to not get too upset if I miss it, because I know there will be a next time.

  13. By nature I’m a night owl. If I’m not in bed by 10 pm, I’m up for awhile. However, due to work and a 3-year-old early bird, I’m often up by 5:30 am. Which would be ok if I got to take a nap. I never get to take a nap, so I’m often a bit tired.

I’d like sneak-ups during working hours, especially the noon hour.

  14. Total early bird. I work 7am-2pm and miss the worst of the traffic in both directions, get a whole afternoon to myself every day (and spent a chunk of it vacuuming or doing other deathly responsible things like booking a plumber). This afternoon I’m going to be spinning some carbonised bamboo fibre while watching Doctor Who, I did all the responsible stuff yesterday!

So, ideal sneak up time for me would be about 5am St Louis time on a Monday. Perfect for a pick me up before I head into work.

  15. Age has certainly changed things. I used to be a night owl, but now I’m done by 10:30 or 11. I wouldn’t say I’m a true early bird either, but I definitely get up earlier than I used to! It’s fun not knowing when a Sneak Up is going to happen. Let’s us practice our stalking skills! 🙂

  16. Chirp, chirp! I’ve always been an early bird, but now that I have two cats, I’m at their mercy, and they want breakfast at around 6AM, if not a little earlier. So, my ideal Sneak Up time would be somewhere around 630AM EST, once I’ve had a chance to make some coffee and start enjoying it.

  17. Both – My nature is night owl but I love it when I can be an early bird. I’ve said I’d be happy if “nighttime” for me was somewhere around 11 AM to 6 PM. All Sneak Up times are fine with me!

  18. I’m a natural born NIght Owl, forced to live in a daytime world! Best time for me would be early evening, Eastern Time (US). Thanks for all that all of you do.

  19. I am definitely an early bird and find myself up by at least 5:30 every weekday morning. I allow myself the luxury of sleeping in occasionally on the weekends, but the body clock really likes to fight that at times! Unfortunately, I also find myself being more and more of a night owl as well lately. Luckily, I can function pretty well on 5-6 hours of sleep on most days. Quiet time at my house is in the morning since hubby is a big time night owl from working the mid shift for so many years. I can get a ton of work done between 5AM and 12 noon! The ideal time for me for a sneak-up would be around 6AM on the day after payday!LOL I have my cart loaded up with goodies from last night’s sneak-up, but I will have to wait and get what is left in there next week after payday…Once a month paydays are the pits!

Glad you had a nice trip with CG to Florida…what a great time for some quality Mother/Son time! And yes, a graduation trip to Alaska for KD and Loopy sounds wonderful too! Oh, and the iris picture is beautiful as well…I have a huge collection of different colors of iris as they are my favorite flowers, but mine have bloomed and gone for this year except for the few that will bloom again in the fall…:(

  20. Generally, I’d have to say that I’m an Early Bird, but sometimes I can adapt, if need be… But, truth be known, I’m really somewhere in the middle as the years have gone by – don’t like to get up too early and can’t really seem to stay up late. Best time for a sneak up? Hmm, honestly, I don’t have a preference. If I’m really coveting something, I adapt. hee, hee. : )

  21. I am such an early bird. I work with a lot of people overseas, so I sort of have to get up early for meetings. I just seem to be much more productive in the morning!

And I would love an early morning sneak up… Heh 🙂

  22. I am a night owl, but forced to be a morning person (DH and son are both morning people). Best time for a sneak up is when I am at work!

  23. I’m an early bird too and I’d love to see a sneak up at 7:30; just when my first cup of tea kicks in!

  24. I use to be a nightowel, but since I’m ill, I have to go to bed a 6 :00 p.m. However,
I am up about 4:30 in the morning. But basically in my heart I was always a night
owl person. I use to love it when my family went to bed and I could sew (was
not knitting at the time) in the peace and quiet and do what I wanted to do. I also
use to dance until 2:00 A.M. and get up and work a 12 hour day. Maybe that’s
why I in the condition I’m in. However, I still would like to be a night person. I’m
glad you had a good time with CG. KD is probably having a wonderful time in
Alaska. What a nice trip for a young girl.

  25. Totally a night owl….especially since I’m on the west coast so even a late night Loopy sneak up isn’t that bad for me.

  26. Both here. When I was younger and slightly foolish I worked for a group of rather brilliant aerospace folk who kept the most psychotic hours. Up at 4 or 5am and to bed around 1 or 2am. To work with them I had to keep their schedule since my cell phone would ring at all hours with them needing something done. That was almost a decade ago and I am up most mornings by 4:30 or 5am and go to bed around midnight. I am truly envious of people who can sleep for 8 hours or more.

I can’t wait for Malbrigo worsted!!!!

I hope CG enjoys Ft. Lauderdale. a Charburger from Char Hut is a must!! There use to be this amazing italian restaurant at sunrise and Pine Island called DiSalvo’s. If it’s still there the garlic rolls drenched in butter would be worth the trip.

  27. I’m a night owl by nature, but of course work gets me up early. So because I’m in front of a computer all day at work (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. central time) — that’s the best time for me!

  28. Looks like I’m in the minority but I’m an Early Bird. I’m usually in bed by 10 pm EDT and up by 6 am EDT at the latest. So, I love those early morning, afternoon and early evening Sneakups!! 🙂

  29. Another night owl forced to live in a daytime world. Working 7-4, I’m usually in bed by 11, although some nights I’ll push it. Getting up at 5:30 is a nightmare no matter what time I go to bed though. Ideal sneak-up time for me would be between 7 and 8 am, when work is still quiet enough I can sneak in some internet shopping.

  30. I am an early bird living in the Alaska time zone. I do not have an internet connection at my house, so I have to wait until I get to work. Best time for a sneak-up for me would be 8am-4pm Alaska time, (11am-7pm Central time). Hope your daughter has fun. Alaska is beautiful and I feel very lucky to be able to live here.

  31. I’m a Midday Wren — usually the wrens are busy at about the same time I am. I do my best work late morning, late afternoon, and early evening. The only thing that gets me up super early is an out-of-town trip or an agility trial (seems like most dog people are early birds). Best time for a Sneak Up? Late afternoon, when I check my computer one last time before leaving work for the day.

  32. I tend to be a morning person — Sneak Ups between 7am-8am Mountain time are great. Enough time for me to be well established on the computer! Some how I do manage to be around the computer for way too many Sneak Ups as it is…

  33. I’m definately a Night Owl – perfect time for a sneak up for me would be 10:45 p.m.

Sherri – in regards to Loopy pictures – didn’t I read somewhere that we could submit photos of the Loopy Postcard OR Pictures of the real Little Loopy out and about to qualify? Let me know.

  34. I’m a night owl but have to get up early for work–I’m not alert enough to look at yarn until the evening. . . .

  35. Early Bird! Best time for sneak-up would be 10:00am. (hopefully when everyone else is at work….he hehehehehe)

  36. HAHA! Being a mom to 8 and one on the way, I am up ALL THE TIME, so what does that make me besides grouchy somedays???? Best time of day though(for us and a sneak up) is about 5am, dh and I rise early to sip some coffee and talk about what the day might bring!

  37. While I am really a Night Owl, work forces me to be an Early Bird. 6:15am, Eastern time, would be PERFECT for sneak-ups for me.

  38. I’m an early bird. 8 am central time would be great!! I sure do need some Wollmeise!! I hope Claudia is doing well after her surgery!

  39. Early bird, here. Eastern Time. Just sayin’….

Night owls? Please get some sleep–you have to *drive* in the morning! Hmm, I’m also a worry bird, apparently. 😉

  40. I am definitely a Morning Owl. I like the quietness of that time, and I like to get going on things early. I can’t stay in bed later than 8 am.

Sneak ups are just that – they sneak up. So if I miss one, oh well. I prefer them at night though (not too late, cuz I’m a Morning Owl). The only reason for that is so I don’t get caught buying Loopy stuff at work during the day – eek!

  41. Me? I’m an Early Bird. Love a Woolmeise sneak-up between 7:45 – 8 am – just when I’m checking my email at work and waiting for my oatmeal.

  42. Well, I am usually a early bird. Although, since kids, I seem to stay up later at night and have a harder time getting up in the morning. Ideal sneak up time for me, would be 7 a.m.

  43. I’m an early bird. For a weekday sneak-up, between 6am and 7am would be ideal for me (I eat my breakfast in front of the computer before heading out to work).

  44. Definite Night Owl here. I am fighting to stay awake at my desk here, but come nine o’clock tonight I’ll be wide awake and rarin’ to go. I get up at six every workday morning so I try to be good and get to bed by eleven…but it’s usually closer to twelve. My husband is definitely an Early Bird and I’m sort of afraid that after we retire I’ll only see him as I’m getting up and he’s going to bed!

As for the sneak-ups…well, they tend to be damaging to my pocketbook, so I really should say what time would be the worst. But really, the best time might be a weekday at 7:30 EST. That way I’d be at work and ready to shop!

  45. Oh heck, I’m not a night owl OR an early bird. I love to sleep sleep sleep! I suppose ideal would be around noon. 🙂

  46. Me, I’m an odd duck. I go to bed around 8:30, wake up for a few hours around 2am, and then go back to bed until 6:30 or 7:00. The hours between 2 and 4 are when I get most of my knitting/spinning in. The ideal time for a sneakup for me would be between 7 and 8 pm east coast time. Dinner is over, and I get to relax for a little bit before bed time.

  47. Hmm, not sure how to define myself. I work all night (midnightish to ten-ish, depending on day and workload) so I am usually asleep for a nap at 8 to 11 pm PST. A sneakup just before I left for work would be wonderful. Can’t catch those early morning ones as I am still at work with no computer access. How about noon PST? Has there been one at that time of day? I am still trying to catch Wollmeise! I am bound and determined I am going to touch a skein of that wondrous stuff someday even if I don’t get to own any!

  48. I’m an early bird. Placed my order today at 5:45! I tend to eat my breakfast in front of the computer so I’d prefer sneak ups around 7pm EST.
