Favorite Way to Celebrate Your Birthday CONTEST!

DSC01592.JPGIt has been a very fun week, because every time the mailman comes, he brings something cool. About a month ago, Laura (who, frankly, is now in my “best friend” category. No, we’ve never met. Why?) pointed out to people on the Loopy Groupie board that I had a birthday coming up in a month, and wouldn’t it be fun if people knit me socks? Well, that just about blew my socks off stunned me. I can’t believe people would knit me socks of any kind for my birthday! And then someone suggested that mini socks would be fun, too. (I love mini socks.) So the mailman has been very very good to me this week and you all are just amazing. I’ll show you more photos next week. (And besides socks, I have gotten other fun stuff, too – whee! I’m going to start having two birthdays a year, I think. Although, wait – that would age me twice as fast. Never mind.) Here is a photo of some of the mini socks that have arrived. Aren’t they cute? I think everyone needs a lineup of mini socks. At one time I thought it would be fun to knit a bunch for the mini sock blocker keychains and hang them on my knitting bag. (I have two on there. One knit by me and one knit by my friend Valerie. I still think it would be fun to have more.) Someone once told me that they knit a sock blocker keychain sock to go with each pair of gift socks that they make. Another person said that they knit a sock blocker keychain sock for themselves for every sock yarn they knit up into socks. All cute ideas! (The framed display board? LOVE these. I have a bunch of them. They look especially great when you line three of them up over your couch with family photos on them. This one is in my office . I also think it’d be good to have one in your knitting room with swatches or project ideas or patterns or knitting plans on it. They’re from Creative Memories and if you type in your zipcode, you can find yourself a consultant near you and order online.)

DSC01588.JPGSo tomorrow is my birthday, and I’m taking the day off. (Of course The Elves will be here working on all of your orders.) Besides eating out, my day will include a little shopping, a little chocolate, and a big Venti. Plus time with WH and KD. (Sadly, not College Guy. But I do get to see him later this weekend – yay!) The February Blog Contest Question of the Month is: What is your favorite way to spend your birthday? Leave your answers in the comments below and I’ll draw a name next Wednesday to pick a winner. What is the prize? Something very fun, not yet offered here at The Loopy Ewe because we’ve only received a few of them so far. Aren’t you curious? 🙂

  1. Have a Great BIrthday!!!

My favorite birthday thing to do is go out to dinner with my husband. My best friend takes me out for a Birthday Lunch, too. Hmm, lots of going out to eat. I like that.

  2. I celebrated by 30th birthday in the best way recently! A very dear friend of mine was having her 30th just a few days before mine, so we threw ourselves a huge party — we rented a pub’s back room, had 2 live bands (one was her brother’s and the other a very good friend of mine), invited loads of friends… my husband even surprised me by getting some very old friends to come in from out of town. Food wise, there were veggies & dip, fruit trays, and even a chocolate fountain! And the night before I decided that it wouldn’t be a ‘real’ birthday without cake, so I baked nearly 100 cupcakes! It was crazy and large, loud and energetic, frivolous even, but one of the best nights I’ve ever had. I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday.

(Though I must add that on the actual day of my birth, I knocked off work, slept in, took myself to to the bookstore, and shared a quiet dinner with a few friends a a great little Ethiopian restaurant. I felt spoilt and wonderful!)

Hope your birthday was fantastic, no matter how you spent it!!

  3. My birthday ritual is never the same twice!!!
I always get a call from my Mommy and step Dad… singing of course! la la la Happy Birthday to me! This year (being out of the country and so far from home was really sad) I decided to go to work anyway… my office was covered with streamers!!! (I have great friends!) I got scrumpcious chocolate cupcakes too!!! My wonderful hubby brought me the most beautiful roses and a big birthday hug and kiss. I got plenty of birthday wishes that day!
When I got home my little angel (20 months at the time) Cidney gave me a beautiful multi-page birthday card drawing filled with all of her favorite stickers! Then I got a big hug and kiss from her!
My honey made us all dinner, spaghetti of course! (My hubby’s best dish!) Then we put the little one to bed and watched a movie together.
(I can’t discuss anything that may or may-not-have-happened after that!)

    It was great birthday!

  4. I have only 1 real birthday tradition – Carvel ice cream cake!! I’ll be 43 in 2 weeks, with my 33rd cake!! A Carvel opened by where I grew up when I was 10, and I haven’t missed a year since 🙂

  5. Happy Birthday Sheri. My birthday is late April, just about the time that everything is slowly starting to green up. I usually take a vacation day from work and enjoy a little shopping, eating out with my family and just generally goofing off.

Also, I’m addicted to making mini-socks. I made a bunch at Christmas and used them as a little extra something on everyone’s presents.

  6. Happy Birthday, Sheri! I hope you don’t get tired reading the hundreds of birthday wishes you get today!

This year I’m celebrating a “significant” birthday (we won’t say which one!). I’ve asked my two younger sisters to celebrate with me by joining me on an island in Penobscot Bay (which is about a 1/2 hour mail boat ride from where I live). I have been going to this particular island for a couple of years to paint for a week in the Fall with a group of artist and writer women friends. It has only solar power, and no plumbing (that’s right, well water and an outhouse). My sisters and I have never spent a vacation together as adults without spouses, significant others or kids. I thought it would be great to get four days together on this island, where we can — sleep in, take walks in the woods, sit on the cliffs and watch the osprey dive into the water, watch sailboats go by (this will be in July), make ‘fairy houses’ from the various driftwood, lichen and shells scattered about, eat good food (we all love to cook), drink lots of wine, and knit! That’s the vision I’m working on, anyways.

  7. Happy birthday! The last few years it’s been fun to round up a group of friends and go wine tasting in Santa Ynez before having a laid back dinner. Hope you have a great birthday!

  8. At this point in life my birthdays seem to be “just another day”. However, this past weekend was my mom’s 70th and I flew back to Chicago to surprise her. I’ve always lived so far from home (first Alaska, now Germany) that it’s a long time between visits, let alone a surprise visit. The look on her face when she opened the door and our few days together were better than any birthday gift or party I could have had for my own birthday.

  9. Happy Birthday! I hope you enjoy your day!!! It sounds like you have made lovely plans! 🙂

My perfect birthday was this past year. My husband surprised me with take out of my favorite sandwich and fries, chocolate cake with vanilla icing and a rented movie. He was so sweet!

  10. The one thing I do every year is I wear my fancy aquamarine earrings all during the month of March. I used to like to work on my birthday because I work with my friends, and we would have a party, and my Mom (bless her heart!) would always send me roses at work. But most important, I think is spending time with my brothers and their families–anyone’s birthday is a good excuse!

  11. I used to like to spend my birthday out with friends eating out or something like that. These days, though, I enjoy spending it with my kids – I have a 4.5 year old son and a 1.5 week old daughter. This year I’m hoping we’ll get to do something outdoors like camping or hiking (it’s in September), maybe pick someplace really gorgeous to go like the White Mountains in New Hampshire and make a family vacation out of it. If not, there are plenty of beautiful spots to be found here in good old Maine so we can at least do a day trip. If the weather is nice I’d like to get out in the woods and take lots of lovely photos of my kids to remember the day by.

Oh, and of course no birthday celebration would be complete without Sparklers!

  12. Except for once when I was in Basic Training and had no choice, I have NEVER worked on my birthday. I think that should be a law somewhere.

My favorite way to spend my birthday was last year when I got to go see the Yarn Harlot! I haven’t laughed that hard in years. I’ll be doing it again this year as she’s coming back to Colorado in April again! Can’t wait!

    Happy Birthday to you!

  13. The perfect birthday would involve extra sleep, good food, quality time with the kids and husband (with some kid-free time too), and the combination of a good movie and knitting. Happy birthday!

  14. Happy Birthday, Sheri!

I would sleep in, eat a leisurely breakfast, take a long walk, eat a nice lunch and a great dinner with my fiance. In between I would relax and knit and read.

  15. Happy Birthday Sheri – I hope your day is as special as you are and surrounded by family and friends!

I save a book by one of my favorite authors for my day of pampering followed by knitting, of course, and then in the evening spending time with family and speaking with loved ones who have manage to spread themselves all over the globe.

  16. Happy birthday to you!!!! I will be sending you a mini sock next week, so keep an eye out in the mail for it!

Now, my favorite way to spend my birthday occurs both during my birthday and after. First, I don’t just celebrate my birthday – I celebrate my birthday week, and sometimes month if I can get away with it! My birthday is March 10, so the week of my birthday is a special week for me – I do no housework, no cooking, no laundry. I allow my DH and children to treat me like the queen that I wish to be. 🙂 This year we are going to Williamsburg with the kids to meet up with friends and do some knitting shopping!

The second part of my birthday comes in April when my best friend and I go away for a long weekend to celebrate our birthday’s (her’s is in May – that’s why we pick April). Last year we went to Williamsburg to the Colonial Williamsburg spa. This year it’s to her parent’s condo at the outer banks. 3 days of no husbands, work, children, “mommy I want” and “mommy he/she hit me”. Three days to sit on the balcony or beach and knit until my fingers fall off. Heaven.

  17. My favorite way to spend my day is to have all my children and grandchildren around me for the day. That would be about 12 all togeather, 13 including my husband. They make me very happy and we eat and laught and have fun all day long. When everyone has gone home, I sit and knit and my husband and I talk about what a wonderful day we had and all the little funny things that happend. Thats it !

  18. Happy b-day Sheri. You could change it to leap year day and only age 25% as fast.

I take my birthday off from work the last few years and sit and knit all day at Phoenix’s Desert Botanical Garden. This is usually the last nice weather before we head into 100 degrees in April or May, through October.

  19. I work from home, so my favorite way to celebrate my birthday is to take the day off and just do whatever I want to. I don’t make plans, I just wake up and see what feels right for me and then do it!

It’s a day all about and all for me!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

  20. My favorite way to spend my birthday is going to look at the fall leaves. My birthday is in October and on the way there are some other great festivals that we tend to stop at one’s an apple festival where you get fresh apple juice and you can buy apples by the bushel or just a single. Its always a treat for the little ones also.

  21. I am so boring. I am happy if I get to go out to a restaurant. And if I get a phone call from my sons. I’ve never taken the day off from work, but it sounds nice. Maybe a chance to get it a little more knitting!

    Happy Birthday, Sheri!

  22. I spend my birthday wearing a tiara, donning my “I’m too sexy to be 40” socks, and spending my LYS gift certificates!

  23. My favorite way to spend my birthday is doing something that I have never done before. Nothing too dramatic, but this year, my excellent friend and I are going on a ferry ride to the beautiful Victoria, BC and we are going to have afternoon tea at the famous The Empress Hotel, where Queen Elizabeth always stays when she graces us with her presence. We are very excited.

Next year…I’m thinking a glass of Merlot in Paris.

  24. Yes, we’re very glad you were born, Sheri. Imagine life without The Loopy Ewe.
My birthday is in July, so I like to take at least the week off but usually more. I live on a beautiful lake, so I love to spend the day at home moving from the dock to the hammock with a book and some summer knitting and a pillow. Then definitely a martini and a fine meal cooked by my wonderful husband, maybe a boat ride? Summer birthdays are great!

  25. Hah, my favorite birthday comes every 8 years – It falls on Labor Day (Sept. 7) so not only do I get a three day weekend, I get paid for NOT going to work on my birthday. Besides that, I am very selfish on my birthday, and spend the day pampering myself at the spa (well, what passes for a spa here in Juneau)…

  26. My favorite way to celebrate my birthday is to take the day off work, sit in front of a roaring fire (winter birthday), and alternate between knitting, reading, and watching TV. The only interruption should be calls from friends and family.

  27. Wow! Lots of responses here! 😎

I love birthdays. I will be singing for you momentarily, Sheri. 😉

The way I celebrate depends on the birthday. For the “normal” ones, I like to get together with just a few close friends and have dinner out, then back to my house for some cake and ice cream and coffee/tea. Last year, we went to the local diner, where the owner (who knows us) brought out more cake. 🙂 I love small town living sometimes.

For the “big” birthdays (the zeros and fives), though, I feel it requires something more. My last big one, I invited all my special friends and family from all over the country. I got the back room at a nice Italian restaurant, and we had a special menu and wine and everything. It was really great. 😎

Right now, I’m in the midst of planning for Mama’s 80th birthday. It may cut into the yarn budget, but hey, it’s really requiring something huge, I think. Maybe I can knit up scarves and socks and sell them to help fund it. 😉

And now: The Birthday Song for Sheri.

    **clearing throat**

    Happy Birthday to you. **grin**
Happy Birthday to you! **GRIN** **looks around**
Happy Birthday dear Sheri!!!! **falls over**
    **gets up**
    **clears throat**
    Happy Birthday to you!!!! **grin**
    **drops curtsey**

  28. the only thing that is a *must* on my birthday is dinner at Outback. it’s a tradition for me. 😀 but i do like it when i get lots of presents and dont have to work too. but always dinner at outback! 😀 (minus the singing!)

  29. My favorite birthday treat: DH takes me out for a lovely lunch and we then proceed to one of my favorite yarn stores where fun things always take place!!! Hope you enjoy yours in your favorite way!!

  30. Hello
My husband and I have been together for 20 years. My birthday is the day after Christmas and my family have always made that day a very special one for me. My husband took over the responsibility of making my day wonderful and he has always taken the day off work just so we could spend the day together. It has always been awesome!!
    Dawn

  31. Happy Birthday!

I normally try to spend the day doing nothing, no dishes, no laundry, all of that is someone else’s problem for the day. Then the whole family always goes out to dinner. The fun thing is that my husband and I have birthday’s one day apart. We get to go to two fancy restaurants in a week for birthday dinners. If we’re lucky we also take a night where just he and I go out and celebrate, but that only happens every other year or so.

  32. Favourite way to spend my birthday?? With two of my best girlfriends who happen to share their birthday with me…usually we’ll go out and see what kind of trouble we can find…try to convince a few people that we’re triplets!

  33. I take the day off of work, go out to eat with my children and do something just for me…..whether it is knitting, napping, or reading….just time for me is all I want for my birthday.

  34. Happy Birthday!!

My favorite birthday schedule is to eat breakfast and dinner with my family, but spend the rest of the day by myself. No teenagers yapping at me, no carpool runs, and shopping wherever I want for as long as I want.

  35. My favorite way to spend my birthday is to go up to our cottage on a lake in Northern Michigan. My husband lights the fire and I knit or read while he makes a special dinner. It’s only happened twice, but wow is it relaxing and special!

  36. Happy Birthday, Sheri!
My birthday is either on or near Thansgiving, so I’m often cooking on the actual day. So I like a little birthday trip to celebrate — last year was a few days in Santa Fe. It was cold and a great chance to actually wear wool socks every day.

  37. My favorite way to spend a birthday is to play hooky from work and start a new sweater. I always remember the birthdays I spend this way ( not that many) and I can remember the sweater and how long it took to knit. Shortest time was from February 1st to February 28th.

  38. Have a wonderful birthday, Sheri, and enjoy a well-deserved day off. I look forward to my birthday just to have the day off from housecleaning and laundry! I’ll spend some time knitting or sewing. And since my birthday is in mid-May, weather permitting, I’ll spend part of the day at the local garden shops picking out flowers for my gardens. (My obsession for flowers rivals my obsession for yarn and fabric!!)
Then dinner out with my family, so no one has to do the dishes….

  39. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHERI! Your idea sounds wonderful to me. My favorite way to spend my birthday is a home made dinner with my husband and two kids. The family time is better than any gift I have ever received.

  40. Hmm…my birthday is New Year’s Eve! I like to go into First Night in Boston if the weather is reasonable! It is a very fun time.

  41. My box from the last sneak-up arrived at my door today!
How wonderful that a lot of us are receiving Loopy Ewe goodies on your birthday,Sheri!
Feels like I’m celebrating along with you! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SHERI !!!!

  42. Favorite way to spend my birthday – I like to go out for a nice dinner (my weakness is for sushi). I then like to go out with friends for drinks, either to a new place we are trying or an old standby that we know and love. I’m pretty easy to please – just give me cake and vodka and I’m happy!

  43. actually, nothing special happens on my birthday. I would love for it to but it’s just another day :o(

My daughter makes me breakfast and that’s about it……..LOL

  44. Think I’m gonna do it this year. Always, birthdays have been rather homebound, with family (husband, kids, then grandchildren also). The kids gather, come on home with a hug and a kiss and gifts. This year, husband and I already have reservations for a condo for a week at a resort up in the Shenandoah Mountains, beginning on my birthday in May!! Just the two of us. There’ll be hiking, sightseeing, Luray Caverns – but I’ll also bring knitting for the time he’s golfing. So there will be peace and quiet, too. And this birthday may be the best yet.
