Favorite Way to Celebrate Your Birthday CONTEST!

DSC01592.JPGIt has been a very fun week, because every time the mailman comes, he brings something cool. About a month ago, Laura (who, frankly, is now in my “best friend” category. No, we’ve never met. Why?) pointed out to people on the Loopy Groupie board that I had a birthday coming up in a month, and wouldn’t it be fun if people knit me socks? Well, that just about blew my socks off stunned me. I can’t believe people would knit me socks of any kind for my birthday! And then someone suggested that mini socks would be fun, too. (I love mini socks.) So the mailman has been very very good to me this week and you all are just amazing. I’ll show you more photos next week. (And besides socks, I have gotten other fun stuff, too – whee! I’m going to start having two birthdays a year, I think. Although, wait – that would age me twice as fast. Never mind.) Here is a photo of some of the mini socks that have arrived. Aren’t they cute? I think everyone needs a lineup of mini socks. At one time I thought it would be fun to knit a bunch for the mini sock blocker keychains and hang them on my knitting bag. (I have two on there. One knit by me and one knit by my friend Valerie. I still think it would be fun to have more.) Someone once told me that they knit a sock blocker keychain sock to go with each pair of gift socks that they make. Another person said that they knit a sock blocker keychain sock for themselves for every sock yarn they knit up into socks. All cute ideas! (The framed display board? LOVE these. I have a bunch of them. They look especially great when you line three of them up over your couch with family photos on them. This one is in my office . I also think it’d be good to have one in your knitting room with swatches or project ideas or patterns or knitting plans on it. They’re from Creative Memories and if you type in your zipcode, you can find yourself a consultant near you and order online.)

DSC01588.JPGSo tomorrow is my birthday, and I’m taking the day off. (Of course The Elves will be here working on all of your orders.) Besides eating out, my day will include a little shopping, a little chocolate, and a big Venti. Plus time with WH and KD. (Sadly, not College Guy. But I do get to see him later this weekend – yay!) The February Blog Contest Question of the Month is: What is your favorite way to spend your birthday? Leave your answers in the comments below and I’ll draw a name next Wednesday to pick a winner. What is the prize? Something very fun, not yet offered here at The Loopy Ewe because we’ve only received a few of them so far. Aren’t you curious? 🙂

  1. Happy Birthday Sheri! My birthday was Tues (26th)!! Although I couldn’t do this for my birthday this go around, my favorite way to spend my birthday is to take the day off and go on a day trip to one of the nearby cities where I live and go shopping — and that usually involves yarn shops and maybe a scrapbook store. Ideally, I’d like to take a mini-vacation, but that’s not always possible and a shopping adventure is always fun! Oh, and the day concludes with dinner out, some place nice where the food is fabulous.

  2. Last year I had a great birthday… Luckily it was a beautiful Saturday in June, and I had the whole day to myself. I got a haircut in the morning, which always makes me feel good, and went to a nearby farmers’ market for lunch (crepes w/ fresh berries – mmmm) and some shopping. Then I spent some time browsing at two nearby yarn shops, and even treated myself to some birthday sock yarn. Let’s hope this year is just as good!

  3. This may sound really corny but my favorite way to spend my birthday is giggling with my girls. Anything is better when my daughters are around. Oh yeah, and fondue – I just love fondue.

  4. Luckily my birthday comes around only a week after the Maryland Sheep and Wool festival, so I usually have lots of stuff to play with…for my birthday I like to take off work, sleep in, drink coffee and knit all morning, shower and then spin up some fun fiber in the afternoon, then have a nice dinner with the man who puts up with me.

    Happy Birthday Sheri!

  5. YAY! Happy Birthday! I hope you have a wonderful day…

So, my birthday lands right after all the holiday hoopla, so usually everyone (including myself) is pretty partied out and still stuffed from Christmas dinner ;). Over the past couple of years, my birthday has normally been just another day…though this year I was in NIcaragua–for work not for play. Anyhow, the day is normal, but then I always get to pick my very favorite restaurant and enjoy a great dinner (usually some sort of seafood) and a bottle of wine with my very closest friend in Charm City. And then I get to go to an Italian pastry shop and get my free birthday canoli…very yummy! I should note that if my birthday falls on a weekend then I will usually make myself a nice breakfast (or go to this great French Bakery), walk to Starbucks and get yummy coffee, and then knit all day until it is time to go out!

  6. Happy Birthday! I hope you enjoy it. My birthday is in the middle of March and it almost always snows the day before, on my birthday, or the day after. Now my favorite way to spend my birthday is NOT to have to drive in the snow!

  7. My favorite way to spend my birthday is RELAXING, doing something *I* want to do, then going out to a great dinner with my husband! I also like choosing my own presents for some reason … one of my favorite “adult” birthdays was when my husband woke me up with a card containing cash for new (needed) clothes–then volunteered as my chauffeur for the day! What fun! This year is the big 3-0, and I think we should throw a party with 30 guests, and everyone has to bring a skein of sock yarn as admission!

  8. Happy Day, to you Miss Sheri! I hope it’s a wonderful day and that you enjoy yourself, your coffee, your chocolate and your family exceedingly! Oh, and I hope it’s perfectly cloudy for your enjoyment….

I like to spend my birthday with my family. There are usually two celebrations – one big family celebration with my parents, husband, children and any assorted extended family we can rustle up. Then Nick and I go out just the two of us for a very nice dinner. It’s usually romantic…..and we do it either just before or just after my actual birthday so it results in two parties. What can I say? They spoil me rotten. I love my birthday and look forward to it every year.

  9. I like to spend my birthday with the people I love. I don’t mind working on my birthday because I like the people I work with and they go out of their way to make it a special day. I like to spend a little time thinking about my parents (both deceased) and all the sacrifices they made for me.

My husband always make my birthday special with dinner out and good conversation.

  10. Since my birthday is July 4, I always get it off..and so do most of you probably! My favorite way to spend it is a long leisurely morning with coffee and paper, knitting while someone else does the laundry, dusting, vacuuming, etc., and then a wonderful romantic dinner out with the hubby. Oh, and don’t forget the fireworks! LOTS of fireworks! Love them.

But wouldn’t it be great if once a year on your birthday you could spend one hour with anyone you wished, dead or alive? Now that would be something to look forward to every year!

Happy birthday Sheri! Hope you have a terrific day.

  11. I love taking the day off from any work and NOT feeling guilty about it! (The “no guilt” part is key!) It also has become a tradition for my daughters to make me a triple layer chocolate cake. Yum!

  12. This is fresh in my mind since my 41st birthday was yesterday. LOL. What I do during the day varies from year to year, but usually involves some type of pampering. It’s the traditional birthday dinner that leaves my friends screaming with laughter. On my birthday my entire family gathers at my parent’s house for the birthday dinner I have been served since I was 2: Hotdogs with cheese wrapped in crescent rolls, baked beans, and devil’s food cake with 7 minute frosting. Every year my poor mother asks if she can change the menu, wouldn’t I like something “nicer” for my birthday dinner. Nope. That menu suits me just fine and we have alot of laughs about it.

  13. My favorite way to spend my birthday is simply with my family — as the kids are growing up this is more and more infrequent, unfortunately. If I were to pick my very favorite place to spend the day, it would have to be a cabin in the North Georgia mountains. For my birthday cake, I love to have chocolate sheet cake. My very favorite!!!

I could knit and read and talk with the family all day long. Pure heaven.

  14. A lot of people are talking about taking the day off. I’ve never done that, but it sounds really, really good. I might just have to try that out next month. 🙂

A couple of years ago on my birthday, I went to the market downtown and got fresh pasta and veggies and shrimp and sauce and a bottle of wine, and made myself a wonderful dinner, which I ate while watching a funny movie. That might just be my favourite private birthday celebration – so far.

    Have a wonderful birthday, Sheri!

  15. Happy B’day Sheri!! I love watching my kids try and keep a secret for a few days. I work near my LYS but live across town. My son this year said we were going to see you @ work but we were too loud in the mini-van so Dad took us home. He was trying to throw me off of the what were you doing on that side of town trail. I was totally surprised when I opened a gift from the LYS. 🙂

  16. A Happy Birthday: Solitary knitting with good music (classical/sacred) in AM; lunch with best girlfriend at classy little chef-owned restaurant; Curves workout; mani-pedi-cure; phone call from my College Boy; and dinner ordered in (Generous George’s Positive Personal-size Anchovy Pizza and a spicy Cotes du Rhone) and a movie with Mr. Wonderful!

  17. Birthdays aren’t that big of a deal in my house, probably because we don’t have kids yet. But, my husband used to take me out to “our” restaurant every year. Since we just moved out to rural Ohio before my latest birthday, he scoured the county for a good restaurant and managed to find a fantastic place not too far away that will probably become our new restaurant.

  18. I would love to spend my birthday with a day out shopping and having lunch with my family. My kids usually make me something special and I always enjoy getting the things they make. I would love to have my house cleaned and all the laundry done as well.

  19. Happy Birthday. I like to have breakfast with the kids on my birthday. Hubby always makes sure the kiddos give me time for a nice long bath!

  20. Wonderful!

    Happy Birthday, Sheri!

  21. My favorite way to spend my birthday usually doesn’t happen ON my birthday itself, but certainly celebrates my birthday! One of my LYSs (Local Yarn Stores) has a birthday sale (one time, within 1 week of your birthday, you get to shop, and everything you buy is on discount – the discount is equal to half your age – you have to show ID). My discount is over 25% now, and I’m shooting for 50% one day. I take gift certificates and any birthday money, and go shopping! A nice lunch out accompanies this, and if I can get a friend to come along and enable me, that is nice, too! All year long I compile the list of books, accessories, and yarns that I am interested in, and off I go! The only sadness is if something is not in stock.

Happy Birthday to you, Sheri! I love to read your blog, and share a bit of your happiness and joy of life!

  22. Happy Birthday Sheri! I hope you enjoy your day off, and the time spent with your family!

My favorite way to spend my birthday is with all of my closest friends. There’s just something so comforting about being surrounded by all of the people I’ve grown to care about as much as I care about my own family!

  23. My birthday falls over labor day weekend and this year I think I would like to spend it camping. I have one husband and two very active little boys. It would be wonderful to spend the weekend in a setting where I could just let them run, scream and get as dirty as their little hearts desire.

  24. My birthday always falls on the same day that the County Fair in my town is open and I like to spend the day at the fair eating as much of the junkie food that I love as I want and looking at all the great exhibits and watching all of the great shows. I normally would never eat all the junk food I eat that day but since it is my birthday I let myself do it without feeling to guilty,

  25. I’m not much for celebrating birthdays; all the hoopla is just not my thing. But I do enjoy breakfast in bed from my kids (fortunately the quality of the food has improved as they have gotten older) and going out to dinner with friends.

  26. i always start my birthday by calling my mom — thanks for birthing me, mama! but that’s really as far as it goes for birthday rituals. after the 25th, they stopped being really important so we are rather fluid with the celebrations. sometimes cake, sometimes dinner, sometimes breakfast. sometimes a drive, sometimes a present — it’s all good as long as the family is with me.

  27. Happy Birthweek Sheri, may it be the best ever!

The previous tradition for celebrating my birthweek (who wants just one day?) was to grab a bunch of friends and head to the nearest pumpkin patch (birthweek is in Oct) and pick pumpkins and drink fresh apple cider. But my favorite birthweek was last year when a friend and I went to Rhinebeck for the first time. I really hope you and some elves will come (to Rhinebeck) sometime Sheri, then my birthweek would even better!

  28. I just enjoy spending time with my family on my birthday. We usually end up grilling steaks on the grill…mmmmmmm! I love Italian food also and we may go out for my birthday with my husband and kids(ages 10 and 8). I have to say though that my last birthday was probably the best ever. I turned 35 and I was actually trying not to acknowledge the day. I was just gonna let it pass by. Once my husband came home from work he reminded the kids(cause they had forgotten) and I immediately began to be showered with a back massage, foot rub and even the 8 year old gave me a “pedicure”. It was the best ever and I definitely will not try to pass up another birthday.

  29. Happy Birthday Sheri! I hope you have a lovely relaxing day!

I think my favorite way to spend my birthday involves not working. And it’s warm so I can sit outside for breakfast lunch and dinner if I want to. I would want to spend the day just hanging out with friends and family. Good tea, Sephora and a trip to a yarn store might be involved too. Unfortunately I will not be spending my birthday this way this year. Someday.

Does the mailman know all the boxes he’s trying to fit in the truck are yarn? And yarn that is being anxiously waited for?

  30. Happy Birthday to you!
    My birthday is this weekend!

I’m going to try and do my favorites this year, since it falls on a weekend. I’m going to sleep in, that’s first! and I’m not going to get up until I’m REALLY ready! Then my Hubby and I are going to breakfast at our favorite little breakfast place down the road. Then, well knitting and spinning! I’m going to take a day to do all the fiber stuff I love and not feel guilty about all the house work stuff I’m not doing! To round the day off I’ll probably snuggle up with Hubby on the couch, watch a movie, and knit on some socks. And cake … there has to be cake in there somewhere, but I haven’t gotten all the details worked out yet. 🙂

  31. I’m a February baby too and my favourite way to spend it is being treated to an amazing dinner at a restaurant that my boyfriend and I don’t frequent much or ever. I love the new experience and of course, the food! Then I like joining up with friends and unwrapping all the presents – I can’t lie!

  32. I like to spend the day alone, on my front porch, knitting. It would be nice if my homies were there knitting with me, but alone is fine with me, too.

  33. My birthday is only 2 weeks after Christmas so everyone is all partied out. Give me a romantic dinner for two; out to my favorite restaurant, Finz with all the courses that I normally don’t have … appetizer, Filet minion or baked haddock, & dessert. Of course a bottle of wine with dinner but with the appetizer a cocktail. Coffee with the dessert. M-m-m-m, I’m making myself hungry … but I have to wait until my next birthday.

  34. Happy Birthday Sheri!! Enjoy your day.

I’d love a day off from work. Sleep until I wake up and spend most of the day in my pjs just reading and knitting, having someone bring me beverages and snacks. Non of the calories count!! Late afternoon, have a couple of glasses of wine with my sweetie while sitting on our deck. Then a nice dinner with no calories counting then either:-)

The sad part about my birthdays in reality is that my mother doesn’t remember them. But then she doesn’t remember her own either. She’s 92 and has Alzheimer’s. It’s a terrible disease.

  35. I’ve celebrated almost all of my 45 birthdays so far with strawberry shortcake (oh yeah, my birtday is in early June. 🙂 Or at least some kind of birthday cake with cream & strawberries in it.

I’ve often worked on my birthday, but I don’t mind that much. As long as hubby takes me out to dinner or at least orders delivery or something.

I also enjoy getting a hand-made card from my daughter – she and hubby always make it a special day!

  36. The older I get the more I like low stress birthdays. l prefer quiet, family time. So I would say a great birthday would be a chance to spend most of the day knitting (with the necessary relief from chores), followed by a nice, quiet dinner (at a restaurant or at home as long as I don’t have to cook or clean the kitchen afterwards), perhaps a movie, and of course, lots of chocolate cake. Presents – yarn or chocolate or both.

Have a very happy birthday Sheri

  37. I usually have a week long celebration for my birthday. There’s dinner w/ my side of the family then w/ dh’s side of the family. A date night w/ DH somewhere in there. I also usually take myself shoppping for yarn or scrapbook stuff, sometimes a new handbag or make up too. There’s also an evening out w/ DH and the kiddos. None of this usually occcures on my actual b-day either… lol. My mom and sis and I also go to lunch at the tea room in town sometime during the week. Lot’s of traditions!

  38. I like to just ignore birthdays – they don’t hold much excitement anymore and are a real non-event around our house. I do enjoy seeing how long it takes the family to remember it is my birthday! Sometimes they remember first thing in the morning, other times it takes almost all day!

  39. Favorite birthday thing to do…going out to dinner with the family.

I like your sock frame. I have one for unique stitch markers. Yet another collection.

  40. My birthday is usually on Labor day weeked, so I get a nice built-in day off around that time. I’n not really one for big celebrations, I prefer just going out to eat with family. My favorite thing to do, though, is take a trip to visit my twin brother, so we can celebrate together.

  41. Happy, happy birthday wishes to you today and for many years to come!!!

My favorite way to spend my birthday is to sleep in, spend lots of time knitting, and no time cooking. 🙂

Hope you’re day is perfect for you!

  42. I used to like getting gifts and going out for a lobster dinner, but now I guess I’ve had enough and just want to have a cake with my husband, daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren.

My three daughters have birthdays just before mine, (6/19, 6/27, 7/14) which is on 7/15. Since they’ve grown and moved out we now have a “together” birthday party instead of 4 different parties.
    Best regards,
    Karen

  43. Because my birthday is in May when spring is slowly turning into summer, my favorite way to spend my birthday is with a picnic at some beautiful spot. When I use to live near Niagara Falls, that was my favorite spot to just put down a blanket with some friends and dine on bread, cheese and wine. And of course we’d have to end the picnic with my favorite cake which is perfect for the season, Strawberry Shortcake.

  44. Happy Birthday Sheri! My birthday is October 8th, and frequently it fall on Columbus day, giving me the day off. No matter what, though, we celebrate my birthday on Columbus Day (we’re all lucky enough to have it off from work/school). My dear husband, non-knitting 🙁 daughter, and I load into the car for a road trip. We’re only about 30 minutes from the Pocono Mountains in PA, so we take a leisurely drive to see the autumn leaves and find a nice place to eat in the poconos. We hit the local candle stores (for some reason they are BIG business there) and generally enjoy our time together. I always bring my sock knitting with me in the car – a great time to get some stitches in.
I love spending my birthday this way, and I love the predictability of it!

    I love the sock frame!

  45. I love to spend my birthday doing as little as possible by way of work. I usually have to work on my birthday, although when I was a kid, spring break fell on my bday most years. Now that I teach, NOT. 😛 Funny thing luck is.

But I love to go out to a nice place for grub, go on a trip to somewhere new, or something else exciting. 😀

  46. Umm, you have a lot of birthday wishes to read already..but I thought I’d add mine too…

Since i was born in July my day would start by waking up at my parents cottage…smelling the morning breeze…a beautiful sunny day.

We would go out for breakfast, mine would be waffles, with oodles of fresh berries, whipped cream, custard and berry sauce.

During the morning there would be nothing difficult, a nice walk to enjoy the weather, maybe put my toes in the water, off the end of the dock…

Lunch would be something off the BBQ, with nice salads and whatnot…a little get together with the family, with a lot of good food. And a white cake with white buttercream frosting…

I would wile away the afternoon in the shade, keeping out of the sun, enjoy a few cool drinks, knitting, relaxing, chatting. Maybe a game of lawn bowling or something…

We would go out for supper, maybe something italian…or not, maybe a local pub…? So long as it’s fresh ingredients.

We would of course finish off the night with a fire…nothing like sitting around the fire having fun and interesting convos wth family and friends…and there would be roasted marshmallows and hotdogs for snacks. We’d go to bed when we ran out of firewood…the day would end like it began, with a lovely cooling breeze.

Well, i better send a copy of this to my husband, so he knows what’s coming up!!!

Hope you have just a lovely day as i am obviously hoping for…remember, it’s not getting older, it’s getting wiser.

  47. Happy Birthday, Sheri! I love having a February birthday – really makes the month fly by. I think my favorite way of celebraing is to do something out of the ordinary. I like to make birthdays into birthday weekends – either go on a trip or stay home and clear the schedule so I can just bum around. I think birthdays have to include LOTS of good food and, of course, cake!

  48. Happy Birthday Sheri!! Have a wonderful day off 🙂

My favorite thing to do is to just be with friends & family. We usually pick a nice restaurant and go out with a small group. No singing though, I’d look like a lobster from head to toe!!
