Blueberry Yarn, Doublegood Blueberry Pie, and a CONTEST!

Have you shopped for blueberries lately? I made the pie below this week, and there were the biggest blueberries I’ve ever seen in the stores around here. I’ve always loved blueberries. I remember picking blueberries in Paw Paw, Michigan when I was little. (Paw Paw is apparently the heart of grape and wine country in Michigan. And they have good blueberries.)

We like this pie because half of the blueberries are cooked into a syrup, and half of them are added to the baked pie shell in their natural state. This gives the pie a good mix of firm and cooked blueberries – thus the name, Doublegood Blueberry Pie. (Original recipe passed on to us a long time ago from family friend Joan Sundblad.)

Doublegood Blueberry Pie

9″ baked pie shell
3/4 cup sugar
3 Tbl. cornstarch
1/4 tsp. salt
1 Tbl. lemon juice
1/4 cup water
4 cups fresh blueberries
1 Tbl. butter
whipped cream (optional)

Combine sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a pan. Add the water and 2 cups of the blueberries. Cook on medium heat until the syrup turns thick and clear. Remove from the heat and add in the lemon juice and butter. Stir until mixed. Let cool.

Add the remaining 2 cups of fresh blueberries to the baked pie crust. Pour the cooled blueberry mixture over the top. Let cool completely in the refrigerator. Garnish with whipped cream when serving (if desired).

Need some pretty BLUE(berry) yarn to go with your pie?

Why not? We always suggest project bags to match your projects. Why not pie to match your projects? Seems reasonable. Here are my favorite blue(berry) skeins this week:

Top Row, left to right: Dream in Color’s Smooshy with Cashmere Violet’s Blueberry, Hedgehog Sock Ink, Gherkin’s Bucket Long Stride Sock Threadbare

Middle Row, left to right: Wollmeise Twin Chim Chim Chimney, JulieSpins Euro 820 Aegean, Cascade 22o Midnight

Bottom Row, left to right: Into the Whirled Kettled Dyed The Cat’s Pyjamas, The Uncommon Thread Posh Fingering Stonewashed, Black Elephant Dark Side.

And here are a few pattern options that caught my eye (they’re all shown in blue, too):

Yume, Frosty Icy Flowers, Alice, Lake Song, Pretty With Jeans, Blue Moon, Bluebonnet Shawl (crochet), Ginga Top, Raglano, Antarktis, and The Age of Brass and Steam.

Today we have a contest and the winner gets a $25 Loopy credit added to their account!

We’ll do a random drawing next week. To be entered, leave a comment below and answer this question: What is your favorite kind of pie?

Have a great weekend and check back to the blog on Monday for Camp Loopy July news and a Monday Update!

  1. Pineapple chiffon pie! My mother in law used to make this luscious pie for special occasions.

  2. Michigan 4-berry – cherries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries with a crumb topping. Summer in a crust!

  3. My favorite fruit pie is black raspberry. I made one yesterday. My favorite custard pie is coconut cream.

  4. Chocolate pie with meringue on top is my favorite pie. A close second is chocolate pecan pie, but my niece is tree nut allergic, so we don’t do that one anymore.

  5. Apple! I grew up in Michigan, but on the western side of the state, where my aunt and uncle owned an apple orchard farm. Every fall we would go there a pond bring home bushels of apples, which my dad made into the best pies and turnovers. Making my dad’s recipe takes me back to my childhood.

  6. Nothing beats a good tart cherry pie.

(though I do have an abiding love for pumpkin and sweet potato in the fall, and key lime, and…ok, yes, I’m a pie fiend)

  7. My mother’s pumpkin pie… when she goes all out and starts with fresh pumpkin…. it’s amazing.

She also makes a wonderful peach pie 🙂 Most folks prefer her apple pies, but I love peach. Oh, and cherry…

Hmm… i guess my favorite pies are my mom’s pies!!

  8. Absolutely, hands-down, it has to be cherry pie. From the best homemade cherry pie with fresh-picked sour cherries to diner cherry pie to Tastycake cherry pies, I love them all!

  9. Any kind of chess pie. And peach pie. And strawberry pie. And french silk pie. And coconut cream pie.

    I like pie.

  10. I’d originally written “Boston Cream Pie” without thinking. It’s actually not a pie, more of a cake. So my appropriate answer is Lemon Meringue. LOL.

  11. My sister makes a delicious peanut butter pie. It’s a graham cracker crust, and the filling is simple (peanut butter, powdered sugar, cool whip and cream cheese if I’m remembering correctly). It’s my favorite!

  12. Do I have to choose??? The other pies might get their feelings hurt! This time of year I like strawberry rhubarb…tart and sweet.

  13. Pecan pie is my favorite! I love the looks of your blueberry pie recipe and will give it a go, once our blueberries ripen up! Thanks for sharing and for the chance, here. =]

  14. My current favorite is straight-up rhubarb, no strawberries to dilute the rhubarb flavor and over-stuffed (I’ve never met anyone who said “more crust, less filling please”). Mmmm… too bad it’s going to be so hot this weekend or I’d bake a pie…

  15. This question reminds me of my childhood, when my stepmother, a dietician, would ask what my favorite pie was as she prepared menus for the hospital. I always said ‘lemon meringue pie’. And still would today.

My favorite to make, though, is apple pie.

    Thanks for the contest!

  16. My favorite is peach pie, but I have to admit that your picture of the blueberry pie left me drooling!

  17. While blueberry pie is really, really good, my favorite still remains cherry – homemade cherry.

  18. My favorite pie is the Huckleberry Pie from Beckie’s Cafe just west of Crater Lake National Park. Fresh handpicked huckleberries from the area! I once even had some for my birthday dessert!
