It’s December ….. do you know when your holiday gift knits will be finished? Hopefully, soon! But if you’re still struggling with needing ideas for a few more quick knits (teachers, neighbors, hairdresser, etc), then here are some quick and easy pattern and yarn ideas for warm winter knitting (focusing on Bulky and Super Bulky patterns).
Mittens: My favorite pattern is the Super Bulky Mittens for Women pattern. It’s free on Ravelry and it takes just a couple of hours to knit a pair. Here are the three that I made out of Malabrigo Rasta. They are so warm and wonderful!
Other Mitten ideas: Bella’s Mittens, Pescovegetarian Mittens, Shelburne, Wingra Mittens, and Anna.
Fingerless Mitts: Super Bulky Fingerless Mitts, Lacefield Mitts, Audrey Gloves, Nejiri Wrist Warmers, Roxy, and North Sea Kippers Herringbone Fingerless Gloves.
Hats: Simple Pearl Hat, Cocoon, Shroom, Basic Garter Rib Hat, Nola Cloche, and Ho Ho Ho! Hat (of course you need one).
Cowls: Bulky Mobius Cowl, GAP-tastic Cowl, Marshmallow Fluff, Shawl Collared Cowl, Luxe Cowl, and Simple Ribbed Cowl.
Scarves: Boyfriend, Tangle Scarf, Cinder, Montana Scarf, Staggered Rib Scarf, and Lamar Scarf.
Need some Bulky/Super Bulky yarn suggestions? Try: Malabrigo Rasta, Blue Sky Alpacas Bulky, The Fibre Company Tundra, Shalimar Missy Bulky, and Spud and Chloe Outer. Lots of warm options to choose from.
Can you tell it’s a cold evening as I’m working on this post? All of these things look so warm and cozy! Of course I know not all of you are in areas where you have cold holidays, so we’ll do a post next week with some fun lighter weight ideas. But today – it’s all about being warm.

How is this for confirmation? Ordered two skeins of Malabrigo Rasta this morning with the idea of knitting mittens. Will be trying the super bulky mittens for women for me and my BFF.
I hope you both love the mittens, Deborah!
I put the mitten pattern in my library over at Ravelry. Do you think it will work for an 11 yr old girl’s hands? I need to make one more pair of kids. Here’s hoping! I may try some of the bulky to make another pair for me though. I LOVE my pair that I made out of the Swan’s Island worsted!!!! That was one of my projects from the challenges last year I believe.
It might, Lisa, depending on the size of her hands. You could also go down a few stitches when you cast on.
Thanks Sheri!!!
Just can’t stand knitting with fat needles, but I’m so looking forward to next week’s ideas… TLE comes up with the BEST pattern ideas. The people I love and knit for and I thank you often.
Genia – I have a harder time on the bigger needles, too. My hands get sore! But fortunately these projects go a lot quicker so I’m not working on them for too long. I don’t think I could ever do a sweater with big needles, though.
