I saw a link to this article yesterday and thought it was interesting. Guys are starting to wear brighter socks? And now we’re calling them Statement Socks? It reminds me of a blog post I did back in January of 2007 about Frank and Martha socks. Back then, I identified myself as a “Martha” sock wearer. Darker, more conservative colors. After reading the article above, I have revisited the subject and find myself more in a “Frank” mode lately. Here are the last few pairs of socks I have made. What do you think?
These are the socks I probably wear most often. You know how I love blue and brown. (Biscotte & Cie in Titanic. We’ll get more of that color.)
Here’s a pair that I finished this fall and love. (New indie dyer coming to us soon. More info then!)
Another of my favorites – more lime. (Biscotte & Cie in Grincheux.)
As well as my rainbow socks. (String Theory Colorworks in Trifolium.)
I need to make the second sock to this one knit in our Campfire Connections color. That color is a little more Martha, I guess. But I still think, overall, I’ve gone Frank.
How about you? Are you wearing conservative (Martha) socks or statement (Frank) socks these days?

Ah…no wonder my 18 year old son suddenly wants bright hand knit socks! Okay by me…more excuse to buy yarn!
Anything that will get 18 year old guys wearing handknit socks has to be a good thing. 🙂
I knew Frank and smile whenever I think of his red socks.
Thanks for the memory, Sheri.
Me, too, Diana!
I am definitely a Frank! Zebra socks. Crazy socks. Red Hot Chili Pepper socks; Holey Guacamole socks. You surely get the picture…..
Frank. Most definitely Frank. At the moment, they’re orange with black cats wearing neon bow ties. Because, you know, October.
I have to admit that my split personality has control on different days. I’m more a Frank than a Martha most of the time but have quite a few solid colored socks that seem to have snuck into my sock drawer.
my socks are almost always bright… it’s the one area of my body I can wear whatever I want and crazy colors and patterns!
I adore bright “frank” socks, but I have to say I have a few of both.
I have to go with the split personality as well. For the most part, I go with solids but do have some colors mostly for the fall and winter months. Who comes up with these new fangled terms anyway?! 🙂
Split personality for me. It kinda depends on the situation. I dress pretty casual as accountants go, but I tend to go with Martha socks for work stuff. But, if its the weekend the brights come out.
I would like to have some statement socks for Christmas…
And thanks for the memory of Frank, too. I think I like either Martha or Frank, depending on the mood. I am looking forward to Martha yoga socks for Christmas?
All of your socks are beautiful, Sheri! Love them all!
I’ve been knitting ‘bright’ socks for my husband for years. He loves them. We’ve even bought a few when we’ve found hand made ones. Granted several pairs go well with his blue jeans, but he has some really bright ones, even pink.
Hmm. I think I’m a Frartha. (A little Frank and a little Martha). It depends on my mood in the morning. This week I’ve been mostly Frank. Next week, who knows! 🙂
Good to see you making the second sock more often! I have to wear tall tactical boots to work as part of my uniform BUT I always have on my handknit socks. The brighter the better so I guess maybe ‘statement socks’ is as good a name as any.
Ahhh…I seem to be the only true Martha in this group. I tend to wear socks in browns and blues BUT I am taken by some of the new self-striping brights. I may have to make a pair after all. I need to lighten up a bit!
I haven’t knit too many pairs of socks but my taste runs to statement socks. Lots of bright colors of sock yarn in my stash. If I’m gong to take the time to knit them I want them noticed
What no teal socks? How’s that happen?
