Did you know that today is National Coffee Day? I think you’re allowed to celebrate by drinking coffee, or by buying coffee-flavored ice cream, or by ordering some lovely coffee-colored yarn for a new project. (Or hey – all three. Why not?) I celebrated by getting a new coffee mug. Well, not really. I bought the mug a month or so ago. Kind of a PRE-celebration, you know? Because I knew I’d need it. The thing I like about this mug (from my very favorite pottery place on etsy) is that it holds a Venti-sized coffee, and the mug keeps it much warmer than the paper cup that my Venti coffee comes in. It’s shown here with a regular sized mug, which holds about 12 oz.
The coffee story goes that an Ethiopian goat herder named Kaldi (way back in the 9th century) noticed the interesting effect that a certain berry (coffee berries) had on his goats. He began experimenting with the berries. From there, coffee made its way to being roasted and traded in Indian and European markets, with the first Starbucks coffee shop being opened in Constantinople in 1475. ย Nowadays, we consume 400 billion cups of coffee a year. It’s a world commodity second only to oil. I hope Kaldi bought stock in all that.
I asked you to tell me about your favorite mug one time. (Note – that’s another mug from the same potter. Rememberย my mug problem?) Today, in honor of National Coffee Day, tell me about your favorite coffee. (Or if you’re a tea drinker, share your favorite tea.) On Friday, I’ll share a cookie recipe that would go very well with either tea or coffee.

Favorite coffee brand:
local-Kaldi’s (any African blend) or absolutely ANY coffee by local roaster Chauvin
microroaster-KIND From Estes Park Colorado. Excellent, fair trade beans locally roasted in Estes and the people who work the shops are wonderful and kind. Ethical company. This is the place I buy all my holiday gifts from. I cannot say enough about the quality of their coffees-smooth and deep, rich without any bitterness. They have a cold-brew toddy coffee (I make it like refrigerator tea) that is outrageous.
I mostly drink tea, but I think I’ll go next door and get a latte to celebrate today.
My favorite tea is Coconut Pouchong from Adagio Teas. If you’re a tea drinker and you haven’t seen their website, prepare to be overwhelmed.
This is terribly unoriginal but I look forward to autumn every year because that means PUMPKIN SPICE LATTES at Starbucks. I *adore* them.
There was also a local coffee shop back where I lived in Tennessee that made a Cinnamon Toast Crunch latte. It had cinnamon in it and then some kind of toffee crunchie bits sprinkled onto the foam. It was lovely too.
I think that am going to have to say a Caribou White Chocolate Mocha.
I prefer tea. My favorite is Taylors of Harrogate Yorkshire Gold. I think it’s a tea a coffee lover might like – a good strong Assam tea. On weekend mornings when I have more time for my tea, I make a small pot of it and usually have the first cup with a spoon of half and half and a little Raw Sugar (turbinado). It’s even better if you can get demerera sugar.
I’m a tea drinker and I love making my own chai tea latte. I buy the sweet chai spice from the World Spice Market in Seattle and boil that in water. Meanwhile I heat 1/2 a mug of milk with a teaspoon of sugar. When the chai water is ready I add loose black tea (usually assam), take it off the stove and simmer for a couple of minutes. Then I strain the tea into the milk and mix. I only wish I had a way to get foam. Delicious!
I love the smell of coffee, but I really don’t like the taste. I do love tea though. It’s a toss-up between chai spice and white tea as my favorite. Of course there is Lady Grey tea too. Hmm. That favorite thing is getting harder to determine!
I prefer tea–cold and sweet. I’m really a hot chocolate person though and I’m picky. My favorite was the salted caramel hot chocolate that Starbucks had for a while. I LOVED THAT STUFF. When at Starbucks, I drink shaken passion tea lemonade in the summer and mocha or PSL in winter. But the thing that daily fills my cup (Tervis tumbler) from dawn till bedtime is cold sweet tea which I now make using the refrigerator tea method.
We love coffee from The Fresh Market in Southern Pines, North Carolina, which is a small and wonderful grocery store. There are other Fresh Markets in the South but unfortunately not here in NY! And our favorite flavor is Cafe L’Orange.
I am a starbucks gal, which means I have a patter. Decaf, nonfat, sugar free vanilla caramel macchiato. It used to be worse, but now I can just say decaf skinny and cut out a couple of steps.
Right now I’m drinking this toasted marshmallow coffee. It’s pretty good, but the best home brewing coffee I’ve ever had was this fair trade stuff that was from Nicaraugua (and a few other locations) that had notes of chocolate without being a flavored coffee. It was super smooth and worked very well in my french press.
Yay for coffee! My favorite coffee comes from Costco, their big three-pounder or something obscene like that. I make it in my $10 coffee maker, and brings me great joy day in and day out. Of course, every Wednesday night when I meet my knitting buddies at Barnes and Noble, I indulge in a Starbucks something-or-other. That’s my weekly, non-yarn splurge!
I’m not doing caffeine or dairy right now so my lame cup of coffee is decaf with some vanilla soy milk (in my TLE anniversary mug, of course!). I like Starbucks green tea latte w/ soy milk – but that’s not coffee ๐ A local coffee shop does a smores mocha sometimes with graham crackers sprinkled on top – sounds kind of weird but oh so yummy!
love the coffee story. Hubby and i are self professed coffee snobs. No problem admitting this either, smiles! We have killed close to a dozen espresso machines over the years and 5 years back finally picked up an industrial machine. I adore tea as well but must have that mug of coffee each morning. My fav blend is a homemade skinny sugar free soy vanilla americano blend. Not only does it taste yummy it has only about 60 calories!
my fav mug i got when i was preggars with daughter nearly twenty years ago. I dropped it getting out of the car once and the handle broke, nothing i tried would reattach the handle. It was hand made, about 16-18 ounces in size with tropical fish all over it. i still used it for years will hubby found a mug to replace it 5 years back. another hand made mug but with a gecko peeking over the rim.
My favorite coffee would be Starbucks Raspberry White Mocha.
As a tea drinker, my favorite teas are the organic black tea with coconut and either the chai masala or the coconut chai from Premium Steep in Philadelphia (www.premiumsteap.com). I wandered into that shop while on a business trip to Philly & have been ordering from there ever since. Highly recommended!
Just ONE?? Sheri, you know I do things in 3’s (at least 3 WIP’s, at least 3 skeins, etc) … coffee: Green Mt spicy eggnog, island coconut, and pumpkin spice.
My favorite is a Vietnamese instant coffee called Vina Cafe. I like that I can easily make it where ever I go.
I’m imagining the goats on those coffee berries! fave tea: vanilla chai. fave coffee: caramel truffle, from the sample packets at Safeway.
My (current) favorite coffee is Green Mountain Pumpkin Spice. In a K-cup for my keurig. I love it!
Saint’s my (and apparently others) favorite coffee shop.
http://www.statecollegecoffeeshop.com/ make a breve (pretend there’s an accent on the last “e”) to die for. (Espresso and steamed half and half).
My favorite tea? I, and the late Queen Mum, love blueberry infused black tea, though wild strawberry is competing of late.
Blue Bottle’s Three Afrikaans. Hands down.
I’m actually a tea drinker and, while I adore all things coffee-flavored, typically don’t like the drink itself unless it’s ridiculously sweetened (a little coffee with my sugar). The Three Afrikaans is the only coffee I’ve had so far that hasn’t needed more than a lump or two’s worth of sugar to make the whole thing palatable. It’s that good.
Never met a cup of coffee I didn’t like. Well, that’s not strictly true but it’s close. Current “commercial” favorite is Peets but there are a number of local roasters here that do a great job. My husband is a bit disappointed that my favorite mug isn’t one he made but so it goes.
I am addicted to cinnamon in my coffee!! I buy it from The Coffee Fool, ground perfectly for my french press. It is so smooth, doesn’t give me indigestion!!
In the mornings I love to have tazo’s green ginger tea. No other green tea comes close. On cold winter afternoons I love Tea Forte’s Belgian Mint or Truffle tea – like dessert without the calories.
When I’m in Starbuck’s land, I like to get iced vanilla half-caf lattes (venti). (I probably didn’t say that in the right order). At home I have been drinking Via’s – iced with a shot of vanilla syrup. When I’m feeling really bad I have a frappachino (coffee-flavored), the bottled one. It’s really more like coffee milk, and yes, it has way too many calories!
Oh, another S’bucks seasonal favorite – eggnog lattes!
I too am a coffee snob– I prefer Starbucks coffee and purchase their brand for home (Italian is my fav). But my favorite coffee cup is now retired (I wish I was retired!!) that reads “The Queen of Everything”. Yes… how many more years ’til I can retire??? Not many… ๐
I used to LOVE coffee, then had some issues and now can’t drink it at all. Not even coffee ice cream. ๐ So, I drink a LOT of tea. I have two favorites: one is a gunpowder green. Nice, smoky taste, great way to keep going during the day. The other is a good standard black Irish breakfast blend. I get a good loose leaf one from Upton Tea Imports that also happens to be processed in such a way as to steep quickly. That in the mornings with some milk and sugar in it really gets the day off on the right foot. Then, of course, at my favorite restaurant in town (Honey Cafe), they do a really good dragonwell tea. Which makes me happy. ๐
It’s your fault I just bought another mug. ๐
My current favorite coffee is Timothy’s Rainforest Espresso. The stronger, the better!
I can’t really drink coffee anymore but when I did I really enjoyed Illy or the Senseo Vienna pods. Now I drink tea and enjoy Kusmi Anatasia which is a lemon earl grey. I put a dash of lemon juice and a little sugar in it and it is usually gone in 5 minutes. Not sure how that happens either. ๐
My favorite coffee is one I recently discovered cuz my SIL sent me a sample of it!! It’s Wild Mountain Blueberry from Green Mountain Coffee, and it’s a fair trade coffee too. Available in K-cups or 12 oz bag. The blueberry aroma is wonderful when it brews, and it’s awesome with blueberry muffins or blueberry biscuits from Carl’s Jr. ๐
After visiting my fiance’s family in Honduras and seeing every phase of coffee production, Honduran cofee has become my new favorite. His family knows I love it and stock me up when we visit. I hope I don’t run out before we go to visit them again.
What a coincidense – Coffee Day! Just sat down to enjoy an iced coffee and a slice of chocolate cheesecake…. I had stopped at a deli for a sandwich and they had cheesecake slices. Right now my favorite coffee (and I can only drink decaf) is the Donut Shop K-Cups. My favorite tea is Earl Gray. My son’s sweetheart over the weekend made Pecan Praline cookies that were out of this world and would go with either one – and I did go to Linvilla Orchards for the Apple Cider Donuts and got mine right out of the fryer. I have pix of them on my blog but you REALLY don’t want to look at them…. ๐ So which coffee colored yarns do you suggest or recommend? Off to look at the mugs on Etsy
Oh, I’m with Diane!! The Donut Shop K-cups (all coffee, no crumbs). DEEE-lish! It’s supposed to be just like Dunkin’ Donuts, which I grew up with and love. Yummy in the tummy!
I’ve never been able to get into coffee but I love chair tea lattes. Right now I’m mostly drinking pumpkin creams (steamed milk with pumpkin flavoring ).
I used to be a coffee drinker, but now I’ve switched over to tea. For everyday I love Typhoo tea, it’s a nice strong British tea. For weekends I buy loose tea from several places, right now I’m loving Argo teas.
I am a tea drinker. My all time favorite tea is Wagner’s Fruit and Spice Tea, but unfortunately I can’t find it anymore. Have you other tea drinkers seen it?
I am a tea-drinker, and my favorite is The Republic of Tea’s Earl Greyer. But my DH and I drink Yorkshire Gold for an everyday tea, and I love iced black currant tea (as served in the late great Marshall Fields).
What we drink on a regular basis is Eight O’Clock French roast. We buy the whole beans, and grind it ourselves every morning.
My favorite coffee or tea, however, is the iced tea from a hole-in-the-wall Indian food place in Columbia, MD. This is not chai–this is simply spiced tea, over ice. Perfection in a glass.
I used to be a Starbucks fan until I tried Peets. I moved away from the west coast so I mail order it. I enjoy tea also and my favorites are Earl Grey and English Afternoon from Harrods. I have a favorite cup that I got on a trip with a close friend from a B&B that we stayed in. It is solidly made pottery and keeps the hot drinkds hot for a good while.
I kinda have two favorites. The Starbucks mocha frappuccino and coffee with hazelnut cream (can’t think of the brand name of the cream, but it’s liquid and in the refrigerator section next to the milk. Love that stuff.
Any mix of coffee and chocolate works for me, really.
Peets. We have been mail ordering it for 26 years..since we married.
Another PEETS fan here!! I get it mailed to my door…even though the local grocery store just started carrying it. Just made a cup of the Donut Shop Iced coffee in my Keurig to drink on my long commute to work tonight….MMMM!
I am a hot tea drinker. Love Earl Gray Creme from Teavana. During fall and winter chai becomes my drink of choice…the spices warm me from the inside out. I love a cup or two in my red Loopy mug with an almond biscotti.
Reading all these comments makes me wish we were all together knitting and drinking coffee and tea together!! Looked over the Etsy site with the mugs and will be back to order a Christmas gift. I didn’t realize that they even sell coffee on Etsy!
My sweetheart buys beans from Burman Coffee Traders in Madison, Wisconsin, and then roasts them himself. I love anything he roasts.
I love Green Mountain coffees-coconut, and pumpkin are my favorites. The Donut Shop coffee is also nice. But I am from Massachusetts and there is nothing like coffee from Dunkin Donuts!
My favorite mug is a stoneware sheep mug that my now ex husband got me when we were dating. it’s one of my prize possessions. i adore it
I like the smell of coffee beans but don’t like the taste. Even in desserts!
I drink tea everyday. Mornings it’s Typhoo or PG Tips from the UK with milk and sugar.
Evenings would be a nice green tea straight up!
My morning coffee is Green mountain Hazlenut or French Vanilla decaf. My favorite Iced coffee is Starbucks Toffee Mocha decaf. It is truly awesome. I try to have it only a couple of times a week as it is really addicting.
