Whoopie Pies & Random Thoughts

give-me-that-fish1. Thanks to an overabundance of TV watching lately (thank you , Olympics), I feel that if I hear the song “Give me that fish. Give me back that fillet-o-fish” one more time, I might have to go push the golden arches over by hand. Enough already.

2. I have three projects that I really want to work on this weekend. A stealth project, one of the patterns from the sock club kit that we sent out this week, and my Mountain Colors Crazyfoot sock (line to appear here at Loopy soon!). Not to be confused with the other projects that I also have on needles at the moment. Way more than these three. I’m so fickle.

3. I don’t believe I have shared a recipe containing peanut butter since November 13th. Clearly I am overdue for another one. And these are really really good. Recipe adapted from Martha’s Cookie Recipe Book. It’s filled with great recipes.

3 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
1 Tbl. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
2 cups sugar
2 cups buttermilk, room temperature
2 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla extract

Filling:

1 1/2 cups creamy peanut butter
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
1 1/2 cups confectioner’s sugar
1/2 tsp coarse salt

Scoop about 2 heaping Tbl. of dough onto baking stone. These will spread as they cook, so leave room around each ball. Bake cookies at 400 degrees for 8 minutes. Let cool on wire racks. When completely cool, spread filling on one side and make a sandwich.

Store in the fridge, covered (or individually wrapped). They taste best at room temperature, so let them sit out for a half hour or so, before serving.

4. I use the Elves as a testing ground for recipes. Well actually, I use WH for the testing, and then I bring the rest in for the Elves to sample so that it’s not sitting at home, tempting me any longer. It’s a good system.

So – here’s a question for you. I want to work on 3 different projects this weekend. How many are you going to work on throughout the weekend? One? Two? Ten?

  1. I have 2 sweaters I need to finish, so I’m knitting 20 rows on each one every day. Then will start a new sock and 2 shawls going at the same time. My husband is watching lots of basketball so it’s perfect! This way I can keep ordering yarn.

  2. I have 3 small shawls on the go which saw no work during the Knitting Olympics not to mention about 6-8 socks in varying stages which need attention.

I totally agree about the fish song — way toooooooooooooo much already!

Enjoy the weekend & enjoy your knitting.

  3. I decided to take a quick break from medical claims and there was your new post!
I’ll be lucky to get in one project–I started a Mara shawl 3/1/10 and since it’s green, I want to wear it on St. Patrick’s Day! Since I’m not the fastest knitter, it’s a stretch plus work….will my doctor daughter understand if I don’t finish my work but do finish my shawl???
My friends who knit continental style go much faster than I do. I wonder how many Loopy people knit English or Continental?
I also wonder: will Sheri be able to do “belated Valentine” kits for those of us who still are sad about missing them?
Regardless, good luck on your projects this weekend.

  4. I have 3 projects in the works right now. Two pair of socks and a shawlette. I plan to work on all of them this weekend, but doubt I’ll finish any. Plus I think I’m going to get some spinning time in, too.

  5. Three projects: a peddlers shawl (worsted weight), Wendy’s Seaside Shawlette, and a Lace of Estonia scarf using Schaffer Anne yarn. I like to have different weight projects going to keep it interesting Oh yes – and i always have a sock on the needles.

  6. I think I would rather listen to the McDonald’s commercial than another “Five dollar foot long” Subway commercial…That makes me want to blow up my television.

Two projects for this weekend…Wendy’s Asparagus Cable sock, heel and leg remaining on the second sock, and a sweater that is about 70% done. I have about 30 more projects that I want to start (and plenty more on the needles to finish) but I’m not letting myself start anything else until I finish these two. (Well…at least one of them…)

  7. One… almost done with Mara. Can’t wait for my 24″ needles to arrive. I’m at the last part of the pleats and it’s all crammed onto a 16″.

As a kid, my Mom always said I started things and never finished anything. As an adult I consciously stick with it until I’ve finished. Thanks Mom!

  8. I am hping to finish Ishbel this weekend. I want to wear it to Maryland Sheep & Wool…yes I know it isn’t until May 1 BUT I am getting a Golden Retriever puppy on March 27 so I predict no knitting for a while after his arrival…at least no lace knitting. I have some dishcloths to finish for our Golden rescue’s sales table at a crafts fair, and am working on a sock. The sock will probably be the last on the list for this weekend.

  9. I have 3 or possibly 4 that I’ll work on this weekend. My family is coming out to Colorado to visit next weekend and my mom’s birthday present from last year (yes, I am a bad daughter) has been languishing on the needles. I must finish the felted clogs this weekend! I also owe my niece a Koolhass hat and I have some plain vanilla socks that I want to get off the needles. Then, of course, there are about 50 skeins of yarn that are screaming at me to be cast on and I haven’t even mentioned the spinning projects. Sigh. Weekends are too short.

  10. I have 5 shawls on the needles I hope to finish at least 2 and make dents in the others, if I do I will cast on 2 more next week!!!

  11. I’m a one-at-a-time girl. Although, I have a few WIPs that only need eyes or body parts to be assembled (toys). But those have been waiting for possibly a year now.

  12. Two or three. I’m finishing up a leftover Ravelympics project, a thrummed headband, finishing a pair of French Press slippers and hopefully starting a shawl for Easter.

For some bazaar reason, the Filet o’ fish commercial doesn’t bother me, but, it does get stuck in my head. I love the expressions on the guys faces in this years commercial.

  13. the fish commercial is a big hit at our house, purely because it makes my daughter laugh so hard. I have one sweater I’m itching to finish and two hats I need to start. However, I’m planning on going to a spinning thing tomorrow and spinning for the first time in AGES!

  14. We’ll see…I have a Mara on the needles, plus a sweater vest for a friend. And I want to make some mitts as a little thank-you for our CIO’s assistant–she’s just a gem and she deserves a little gifty for all I ask from her. What will I actually work on? Maybe the mitts tomorrow night while I’m watching our local Saturday night monster movie guy. Anyone else hooked on Svengoolie? 🙂

  15. I’ve been working on 3 projects lately. Hopefully, each of them will get some attention this weekend. The first is a star-shaped, crocheted afghan that is a gift for a friend’s new baby boy. The second is a pair of socks for myself for St. Patrick’s Day. The pattern is Brigit, and I am loving these socks. I am knitting them using magic loop for the first time, and I learned the Norwegian purling technique. It might just be the thing that helps me make the switch to Continental! These socks are hard to put down right now. My third project is a Miralda’s Triangular Shawl from Knitted Lace of Estonia. I try to always have a bit of lace on the needles, and I love this book. Enjoy your weekend knitting!

  16. I’ll probably work on three socks and my Multnomah. It helps that I can move from one project to the next. Keeps my knitting ADD in check. I love having numerous projects going at the same time. I have recently discovered knitting podcasts and just love to knit why listening. Claire got me on to this. Have a terrific weekend, Sheri!

  17. I have (foolishly?) started 3 pairs of socks for the March challenge of the Sock Knitters Anonymous group on Ravelry. So my hope is to be going back and forth between them all weekend – this after I had promised myself to only do one pair at a time from now on. Oh, well!

  18. It’s funny you mention that commercial because I’ve had that song stuck in my head all day as well & it’s getting on my last nerve! lol

I have 2 projects that I hope to spend time w/this weekend – a second Monkey sock & I need to get back to my CPH.

    Have a great weekend! 🙂

  19. I am hoping to finish my Cedar Leaf Shawlette and 3 crochet owlies and if I have time, work on my Warm Mountain stole. That would be a total of 5….we’ll see if I have the time for it!

  20. That commercial drives me nuts too. Of course I still have “Oh, Canada” in my head.

I only have 5 projects on the needles right now…down from 7. Time to start some more…

  21. I have 2 projects on needles; a scarf from Vogue Knitting and my second Mara but I’m also starting a Christmas stocking. I won’t way how many years ago I got the kit! (I LOVE that fish commercial!!!!!)

  22. My mom and I get a kick out of the Travelers Insurance dog who’s worried, worried, worried about his bone. That can get a little old, though.

I have two shawls currently under construction and I’ll probably take a stab at both of them. One is freshly started made out of Lisa Souza’s Baby Alpaca Sport and it’s a new pattern I got from her (and the yarn — “Emerald City” colorway) at Stitches West last week. The other is a Cascading Leaves shawl in the heavier Ultra Alpaca Light, Peat colorway. The green heather is so lush looking I almost fall into the forest if I’m not careful!

Then there’s the half dozen socks on the needles….Always something!

  23. At least one, probably two…maybe three! I will definitely try to be catching up on the Evenstar Shawl KAL (Clue #3 comes out in a week, and I’m only about a quarter of the way through Clue #1). Then there’s the Jiffy Triangle Scarf…the Thick & Quick Scarf…oh, and since it’s March, I need to knock off another wedge of the Christmas Tree Skirt. At this rate, I’ll have it done by…oh…September. Wait, that’s four! Ok…four!

  24. One Knitting project. The Wendy johnson Waterfall sock from the toe up. With the Jan and Feb KALs for the spring flingers I’ve gotten hooked on knitting socks.

  25. I can see (beside my computer desk) 2 projects that I will be working on over the weekend. One is a hat that I would like to get done before it’s too warm to wear it and the other is to catch up on a knit-a-long that I am seriously behind on.
I also tend to keep dishcloth making stuff with me when I go to work so I have something small to do while waiting…
If I get bored of them, I do have a lot of things in my queue 😉

  26. One knitting project (finishing a Baktus scarf) and two cross stitch projects. Oh, and reading two books….

    That should keep me busy.

  27. I love that commercial! Did you know the same two actors are in it from last year?!?
Guess what I had for lunch today? Yup, Filet o Fish! With cheese no sauce.
As for knitting, I want to finish hubby’s scarf and teach myself to knit toe up socks. If I do learn, then I have some mini mochi in the stash for socks. Then there is the yarn I bought for the Olympic Hat.
I hope to have time for knitting this weekend but it will have to wait until evening. My daughter has basketball playoffs this weekend. Game Saturday for sure and maybe one in the afternoon. Or maybe one on Sunday. Not able to knit at the games because it is one of my own playing.

  28. Sheri, a couple of nights ago, I sat down and did an Excel spreadsheet for all the knitting time I have in a week to try and make sense out of my pile of WIPs. If my goal is to knit two pairs socks a month, then obviously, I need at least 15 of the 30 hours of knitting a week to be socks, right? (It takes me 30 hours to do one pair.)

I’m STILL working on the two (yes, two) Girasoles from LAST year – and will be knitting the delicate Malabrigo Lace one this weekend, plus a sweater I cast on three years ago, at least four different scarves and yes, at least three different pairs of socks.

By the end of the year I’m going to have it down to no more than 7 projects ongoing at once.

My husband, Frank, doesn’t see anything strange about any of this – but that may be because one of those pairs of socks are for him.

  29. Your recipe looks so good–It’s too bad that there’s not a catchy phrase for whoopie pies–Let’s see, “Give me that Whoppie Pie-Give me that Pie”… works for me!

I have my Olympic Hat (posted on Ravelry) that I’m working on for DH. I’ve got the Moose part halfway done and want to finish it this weekend. I’ve cast on for a new scarf, but I’m going to frog it ‘cuz the knit doesn’t fit the yarn–Hand Maiden Swiss, and I’m not wasting cashmere on something that’s not knock out gorgeous! And I really want to start another pair of socks as I just acquired “see through” shoes that show off nicely knit socks! So, I’ll be busy. Can’t wait for Tuesday as I taking off Tuesday ot knit all day. My boss thinks I’m crazy (shhhhh… don’t tell him).

  30. I think it will be 3. DH wants to go to the MN vs WI hockey game tonight (don’t think I want to work on shawl if I am on a beading row @ hockey game), then there is knitting for mil’s (most conversation doesn’t involve me), and then there is at home knitting that can be complicated and/or with beads … I think it is time to go find some TLE chocolate kisses and coffee …

  31. I’ve got 2 I’m focusing on this weekend – my Olympic, now post-Olympic Challenge the Aleita Shell, and a baby blanket in feather and fan for my neice that needs to be finished this month.

  32. I’m going to work on my sweater, and a crochet project. I also hope to clean up my blocking area enough to weave in the ends on a couple of scarves and finally block them.

So, does that count like 2.5 or just 2?

  33. I hate that commercial with a burning passion!! Luckily, between DVR and Netflix, I haven’t seen it at all this year. However, my “friends” keep singing it to me! It drives me absolutely CRAZY!!

I am a one at a time kind of knitter. I will MAYBE work on two, if I need to grab something quick – I have a sock toe started, otherwise I am working on a sweater. I have the whole weekend free (aahh!) so hopefully I can get some spinning in too.

  34. I’m finishing up a peusdo-modern baby blanket and forcing myself to finish EZ’s Green Sweater. I’m so close – why did I drop it? Despite the intentions to complete these two, my head is swimming with new projects to start. Ah knitting and it’s mysterious ways…

  35. At least 2. I’m knitting a pair of socks from the Valentine kit yarn, and I’d like to make some progress on my February Lady also. In a perfect world, I would have time to cast on a shawl, but I think I might be distracted by a certain Whoopie Pie recipe…

  36. If everything goes right- 2. I have to finish a border on a baby blanket by fighting my most hated of foes, crochet. However once that’s done, I’m casting on the cutest, most girliest, most adorable baby blanket ever!

  37. I am working on mittens this weekend. Hoping to finish one pair and get the other done before Parent/Teacher conferences on Monday. I also have a shawl and a pair of socks that I want to work on along with trying to fit in some spinning since my wheel has been neglected since before the Olympics.

  38. Won’t be knitting this weekend since I can’t hold needles at the moment, but if I can break away from this work project originating in the nether regions, I may do some crochet. I seem to be able to do that sorta kinda. And like BFF Liz, I will likely be watching Svengoolie. 😎

  39. I have about three inches left on a (now) boring top down cardigan from Nashua Creative Focus Worsted. I hope to finish it but have to work on taxes. Another boring project. Rain in the forecast so maybe I’ll finish both!

  40. At the moment, my knitting seems to have sorted itself into upstairs-knitting and downnstairs-knitting. Upstairs, in my office, on my desk, right next to me, right now: the start of a Traveling Woman Shawl and the couple of inches worth of Stora Dinum Shawl.Downstairs: A pair of Smoking Socks and a Gaelic Mist sweater. (Polite guests would point out that swatch I’ve started for another sweater). This weekend, I think I’m going to focus on the shawls. Maybe I’ll keep one upstairs and move the other one downstairs. That way, I’ll be able to work on one or the other where ever I am. Of course, I also have to do laundry. Should I put a project in the basement too, just in case?

  41. Ok. So it seems like this group is full of over achievers or unbelievably fast knitters. I just hope to finish a sock and spend some time with my family. My college daughter will be home for spring break. I’ll have all 6 of my kids and future son-in-law over for supper tommorrow night. It’s not too often we all get to be together.
