Under Construction, Lessons Learned, and a CONTEST

DSC03014I’ve learned some things this week. That’s always a good thing, right? I’m trying to be on top of the techno-stuff, because I think it’s important. Consequently, we’ve had some construction going on (inside and out, as it turns out). Here are a few things I’ve learned:

1. A “Group” and a “Page” are different on Facebook. Our “Fans of The Loopy Ewe” that I told you about earlier this week, is a Group. Web Guy pointed out that I should have an official “The Loopy Ewe” Page on Facebook, because “we can do more with it”. So as of this morning, we now have an official Loopy Ewe Page! This Page will be good for me to talk to you and for you to talk back to me. This is the place where I will do the postings about things going on at Loopy Central. (Sneak Up Previews, knitting woes and wonders, and anything else going on in the shop.  I’ll do an occasional contest there, too.) You do have to click and become a fan of the page if you want the updates to show up, even if you’re already a member of the other group that I mentioned the other day. I’ve already added in some news about recent arrivals! (My own Facebook page has a little Loopy stuff and a lot of regular life stuff. Feel free to friend me on there if you’re interested in that, too!)

What I learned: Talk to Web Guy first before jumping into something….

DSC030152.  You can hide things on your Facebook homepage. (My friend Janice showed me that last weekend.) It’s not that I’m not interested in your Bejeweled Blitz level or what color M&M you are, but all of those apps do take up a lot of space on that page. Now I’ve closed the apps and I get to actually read about YOU and your status messages. I like that!

What I learned: I really know so little about Facebook.

3.  Twitter continues to be a big thing. I don’t really get it, but I get that other people get it and like it. Therefore, we’re linking The Loopy Ewe Facebook page to our Loopy Ewe Twitter account. (Remember, I said I’m trying to stay on top of the important techno stuff.) If you like getting status updates via Twitter, feel free to add us to your Twitter list.

What I learned: Twitter is important to many people. Maybe I’ll eventually get it. But we’ll be on there for those of you who like it.

DSC030164. While we’ve been busy making these technology changes inside Loopy, the street crew has been busy making changes on the street outside our building. (Remember this summer when they cut through our phone lines? Yep. It’s still the same project going on out there.) Now they are breaking up the entire street. With this. And I swear, they drill down several feet, then they bring the jackhammer head up, move it over 6 tiny inches, and repeat. Consequently, it took them the entire day yesterday to do about half a block. Our brick building shakes like we’re having earthquake tremors.

What I learned: Jackhammers give me a headache.

(Edit – for those who were concerned: I will continue to blog regularly and participate in the Loopy Groupies on Ravelry – no worries!  Facebook and Twitter are additions, not substitutions. I promise.)

This month’s contest question: What’s one lesson you have learned lately? Leave your comment below and I’ll draw the winners next Wednesday. I saved some Wollmeise for the prize!

  1. I’ve recently learned that I need to rethink some of my organizational tendencies. My stash is taking over the spare bedroom. I need to invest in a stackable solution. 🙂

  2. i learned that even though my son is 23, he is still a little germ factory (as are all children) and that if he has the sniffles, i will, after spending only 5 minutes or so with him, end up a massive head cold, which will migrate into a chest cold, and i will be in bed for at least a week and a half. if i’m lucky. part 2, i don’t enjoy knitting while i’m sick in the bed. i need my knitting chair that lives in the family room.

  3. I have learned that I really need to have extra money set aside in case of emergencies, like the air conditioning going out.

  4. I learned that getting a new puppy is almost as much work as having a new baby! Good thing they grow up faster–and potty train earlier!

  5. I have learned to remember and be gracious toward my husband when he has been awake since 3:05am. I have also re-learned how much fun it is to spend time with adult friends!

    mother of three
    wife of one

  6. I’ve learned to count my blessings. August was a horrible month for me, as my baby was in the NICU for 3 weeks. He’s now out, happy and healthy, and I enjoy every little smile, burp, dirty diaper! I love it all.

  7. I’ve learned to be thankful for today because tomorrow is not guaranteed. We’ve lost many dear friends (and those that we “know” in the public eye) recently and it really makes you think about your mortality.

  8. I learned that no matter what is happening to you, to always love your family and friends. When they are in trouble and you help them they would ALWAYS stick for you. I knew to be thankful of the people around me but after what had happen in the past few months that they would ALWAYS stick up for you

  9. I’ve learned recently to have more appreciation for the hard work my husband does to provide for us, and to be more thankful for the way he treats me. Sometimes I selfishly think I deserve more or better, but I need to be happy with what I got!

  10. I learned that when the IT security folks at work talk about “pen” testing, it has nothing to do with pens you can write with or pens you can put farm animals in–but it’s short for “penetration” testing.

  11. I’ve learned that it is inevitable that my kids will catch a cold after their first full week of school.

I’ve also learned that if I limit my computer time I could actually get some knitting done, and even though I have more knitting projects planned than I could actually complete in 3 lifetimes, I will continue to find more that I just have to make.

  12. I learned this past week that you can’t hurry the body into repairing itself, you have to let it take the time it needs.

  13. I learned this week that no matter how hard I try I can not get the pugs to stop barking out the window even when no one is there!

  14. I learned that a perfect way to wind down a weekend of sock-knitting is to take a sunset hike atop a peak with views of the San Francisco Bay. Relaxing and inspirational.

  15. I’ve learned this week how much fun it is to have a new cat. She is so entertaining and I highly recommend adopting a cat or dog from your local shelter or rescue group.

  16. I have learned this week that I really hate working ALL the time & knitting is really my salvation 🙂 If I didn’t knit I might just lose my mind ….. definetly helps my sanity!!

  17. i learned that throwing the ps3 controller into the wall is not as good of an idea as one may think. oh, regret and the anger that creates it.

  18. My husband & I enjoyed a great vacation to Eastern Canada this summer, but I learned I really don’t like to be travelling for 4 weeks – it’s too long to be away from home.

  19. I learned that a lot of that “stuff” we hang onto and think we NEED can be tossed! I wished I’d done a little more cleaning out BEFORE the move. I also learned that my energy is not limitless and I really need to pace myself or I’m going to end up sick. My mother-in-law had a good point the other day. She said we need to be sure we get flu shots because our resistence will be down after this move.

  20. I learned, after about a year of trying, that I cannot teach myself to make socks on DPNs and will have to take a class after all. I am a self taught knitter and can do almost anything else – but socks have me stumped!

  21. I’ve learned it is worthwhile to stay on top of my to do list than to let them sit and never get them done. I do better if I take things a little at a time rather than all at once. Even though I learned this lesson many times, I’m sure I’ll forget again soon and something won’t get done!

  22. I’ve learned that if the estimate comes in higher than you were expecting…pay the money!! It will only get higher as you procrastinate!

  23. My lesson is that if i don’s cast on my second seck within minutes of casting off the first … the first will remain a single. For a very long time.

  24. A life lesson I have learned is to find something good in every day – even a small thing. My knitting lesson is not to start a big project unless I know I will finish it – too many started with good intentions and not completed.

  25. Well, my recently learned lesson is a bit of a hard one. My MIL just had emergency brain surgery when an anuerism burst on Tuesday. My lesson? Well, when I first got the call that she was going to the hospital, I thought it was just the flu or something minor. I’ve learned not to belittle things quite so much, because it just may be a real emergency.

BTW, she’s going to be fine, but she’s got a long recovery ahead of her.

  26. Don’t know if you would call this something I’ve learned or just recently become aware of, I love to collect yarn, you say well that isn’t new but the fact is I ‘m not in too much of a hurry to do anything with it. Possesion seems to be my objectice. That said there is always a neat project on my needles.

  27. The lesson I’ve learned lately is that I could get alot more knitting done if I would stay off of ravelry looking at what everyone else is knitting. I get great ideas on ravelry and on your blog also, but I need to spend less time looking.

  28. That the Facebook communication standard of “third person” (e.g., “Cindy is looking for a place to bury a body.”) makes me think of the “Jimmy” episode of Seinfeld (“Jimmy thinks Elaine is cute.”)

  29. I learned the best thing we can do is share our wealth of goods with others whether it be household goods, money, time or too much yarn. Most of us have way more than we need.

  30. I learned recently that I want to move back across the country to be closer to my family after 15 years on the east coast! And that the career I have will not be compatible with this move or what I picture the rest of my life will be. These are certainly not the easiest decisions to come to, but I feel a great weight has been lifted. I will be sad to leave a lot of people, but I know I will make more friends and I know my family will be happy to have me nearby!

  31. If I EVER own a business I will make sure there are 2 parking spots right up front next to the handicap spots for expecting women, regardless of what type of business I own. Walking at 8-9 mos pregnant is NOT fun.

  32. I’ve learned that you CANNOT wash raw wool with Citrasolve! It said, on the bottle, that you could use it as a degreaser.

It forms a lotion-like consistency that will not wash out! I tried everything and eventually ended up felting it. Oh well! Off to the compost pile with it.

  33. The lesson I’ve learned this week is that Kingergarten teachers really are amazing. My daughter came home all last week brimming with happiness and full of all kinds of wonderful experiences.
I learned that Mrs. P. is “a teacher” (said with emphasis) and I am “just a mom”. That’s okay, because anyone who can make my daughter smile everyday and love going to school can be my hero as well as hers.
The other lesson I’ve learned this last week, is that being a stay at home mom is the best job in the world. I’m taking one precious year off work and I’m already having the best time of my life.

  34. In April my 11 year old son became extremely ill with a life-threatening bacterial infection that almost ended his life. I have learned that it is true…live each day as if it were your last. Don’t get so busy that you forget to tell those that are most important to you how much you love them. To quote someone famous…expect the unexpected.

  35. I have learned that the workplace is not a safe place
(I dont mean in a fall down kind of way)
and its unfortunate that some people cannot be trusted to do right thing …no matter how much you want to believe in them …while this saddens me …the lesson learned is to
    MAKE A CHOICE !
take controll of my own life and make efforts to surround myself with good people !

  36. I learned that all fibers by the same name are not the same! Llama can be as soft as alpaca and Romney need not be terribly scratchy!

  37. This past week, while traveling, I have learned that when it comes to yarn and knitting bags/totes/project bags, etc., I have absolutely no willpower or self-discipline and the word “budget” disappears from my vocabulary/comprehension.

  38. I learned that I should check Twitter regularly to participate in LoopyEwe contests.

And I learned how to speed-defrost a frozen roast.

  39. Since my husband has been sick for so long recently, I’ve learned that you shouldn’t take life for granted, and that there is nothing more important than your health. Okay, and maybe some yarn. 🙂

  40. I learned that it doesn’t matter if the yarn is on the highest shelf of the closet, if it’s in an open container, our youngest cat, Zoe, will find it when no one is home. When she does it, you will inevitably come home to hanks of yarn all over the house and if any had been wound into cakes, those will be pulled out and tangled into an amazing web all over the house. Providing the stupid humans in the house hours of de-tangling and winding “entertainment”.

  41. I have learned that friends are the greatest things you have in your life when you are low. I was recently laid off from my job and “asked” to put in two weeks. They played games with me, telling me that if I didn’t comply I may not be offered a severance package. My friends really rallied around me and gave me not only strength and hope, but projects to help me with this tough time…. yarn, m&ms, goodies of all sorts. Friends are the best!

  42. I’ve learned I’m a procrastinator.
I’m trying to figure out facebook but why am I cleaning a fishtank and harvesting strawberries on a farm there? Someone got me started doing that. I don’t need to learn I don’t have time for that stuff.
I know I like wollmeise and I should have added this sooner, but we are on our way to the ocean.
