It’s time for our monthly contest and I was all set to ask a different question, but then this You Tube video came through in an email from my mom and it changed my direction. (And then I promptly got it in 3 other emails, saw it on a couple of blogs, and heard Anderson Cooper talking about it on CNN last night.) What a great video! It’s all about a gutsy lady who had a dream and made something happen with it. So this month’s contest is to leave a comment and tell me what your dream is. Now I know fully well that some of you will not be brave enough to write it down for everyone to see, with your name attached! But I hope that you do. It seems like step one in any dream is to be bold and put it in writing, right? Of course not many people take the time to read the blog comments on our monthly contest (except for me!), so you don’t have to worry that someone you know might see and recognize you. On the other hand, some people DO take the time to read them and with a question like this, you could inspire a whole lot of people by putting your dream out there. I look forward to seeing what you all dream about doing or having or being, somewhere in the future. Will you share? (Hmmm – and another thought – if any of you read a comment and your first thought is, “Well I could help her/him with THAT dream. ” – email me. Maybe we can put some dreamers and enablers together to make things happen.) One of my dreams is to live in Colorado one day – thus today’s photo. We’ll draw for winners next week on Wednesday, so you have a week to leave your comment. I have some skeins of Wollmeise to give away.
Speaking of Wollmeise, we did a mini update with some of it yesterday, but since the great majority of our boxes are being held up by customs in Chicago, we won’t have more for who knows how long. In the meantime, we have a few things to take care of around here (Spring Fling, May Sock Club, “Don’t Be Blue Kits”) so even if it does arrive soon-ish, it will still be awhile before it’s going to go up. (Translation: no need to stalk and watch for it.) Maybe some of the customs agents in Chicago have had a dream to capture a case of Wollmeise for their very own….

Before I saw the video, I thought it would be easy to tell you my dream, or the latest of my dreams, but now I’m not sure. The video is fantastic. I’m glad it is flying all over the internet. It should. But here’s my dream, and it has nothing to do with talent. but at least it part of my life’s pattern and vision. I would like to connect with a village in rural Mexico, in the state of Oaxaca or Michoacan, with women who need to supplement their income and help them develop a local craft — weaving, spinning, whatever they do — and connect them with a market in the U.S. Some additional income and a cooperative in the town could make a difference, and I’d like to help it happen, with some funds, lots of enthusiasm, and U.S. contacts. Maybe someone reading this will have some thoughts. I have a son, who lives in Mexico city, and he may be able to help me. Maybe a trip there next winter? A ravelry group? A website?
Too many dreams for one life! Jenny Holzer said “To believe in reincarnation is to admit defeat.” Well, I admit defeat and need another couple of go-rounds to get through everything. The main dream would be to quit the day job (useless, futile, waste of time that it is) and make and grow beautiful things all day and into the night.
I think dreams are the best way to live your life, especially when you seek to fulfill your dreams. I’ve had several dreams in my life. The first was to run a marathon and complete a marathon, which I did on one of the warmest November days in DC. Then I dreamed of living on the road full time. My husband, I, and our 4 boys did this for 4 years and had a wonderful time touring the USA. Then I dreamed of owning a homestead where we could become self sufficient and ultimately own our own fiber animals. Well, we’ve purchased our homestead and started on this journey of self sufficiency. I don’t know how long it will take us to get there, but we are working to make our dream come true.
So yes, everyone should have dreams. They are what makes life worth living. Go for your dreams and make them come true.
My dream is for my boys, I live a great life, and I hope that theirs is just as wonderful as adults – one wants to sing on Broadway and the other wants to be a sportscaster. I hope that they reach their goals, I did. And while I dream for them, I will continue to knit for them, so they are wrapped in comfort and love.
I have a dream to open up a home for people who are hurting. My husband and I built our home 7 years ago, with the intention of having our parents live with us when they got to the point they could not care for themselves. We housed and cared for both of my in-laws here with us until they died. My own father (87) may soon be joining us. Currently we have a wonderful woman living with us who needed a place to stay, and for health reasons (cancer and financial issues), she is unable to rent a place herself. I know of several other women who could really benefit it they lived here with us, also. For our own financial reasons, we are unable to offer this to them. I’d love to just fill up our other 2 bedrooms with those in need, provide their food, and offer them some security for as long as they would need it. I would call it Hope House.
My dream is extremely selfish and silly. I was so close to it last night and I mucked it up. I have really wanted to meet the lead singer of my favorite band for long time now. I managed to get some meet and greet tickets to a concert of theirs for last night. My husband and I drove 6.5 hours to get there and when I finally got to the table I could hardly say anything. I was such a bumbling idiot and have been kicking myself since. Even hubby said I really messed that up! So I would wish for a chance to start yesterday over or get any kind of second chance to really do it right.
I don’t think any of you are asking too much so my dream is that all of your dreams come true!
Me, I am happy, healthy & employed so I don’t have a thing to complain about but would like to live more in the moment & appreciate the here & now instead of take it for granted.
My dream is to be able to make a living through something art-related. I studied art as my undergrad, but needed to put food on the table and ended up doing something else for a living. My job is still rewarding, and I do contribute good to society (at least I endeavor to) but it would be wonderful to wake up in the morning and be creative for a living in a new way. I would love to be a graphic atist and illustrator. Although I’m taking courses to keep up with my current license in my job, when I’m finished, I’m planning on getting into a certificate program in graphic design and making my dream a reality.
When I was in my thirties, my dream was to go back to school and get my Bachelor’s degree. I achieved this dream over a 7 year period, working and going to school part-time. Achieving this dream enabled me to get a great job, buy a house and to put my kids through college. My current dream is to live in the Outer Banks, NC, preferably Corolla. We have been going there on vacation for the past three years and I feel like I belong there. I would love to have a house close to the ocean and large enough to have my kids and their families (eventually) come to visit whenever they want.
I am 37 and my dream is to persue becoming a writer now that my son is starting school this fall. I have wanted to do this my whole life, but something always has gotten in the way or had to come first. Now I am slowly trudging along with almost 2 chapters but too scared of being let down.
My dream is to find my passion and make a living doing it. it will be some combination of yoga, alternative health for women, maybe midwifery and healing foods. I want to help people find balance in their lives. i also dream of living in a community of family and friends in a place where we can take care of some of our own needs (food, power , etc)
My short term goal is to have a complete stash or even one ball of wolle meise and to choose all of the socks that rock colors i want π
may we all live our dreams!!
Susan Boyle is such a gutsy and real woman! I don’t have a dream of personal accomplishment in the public eye like hers, and my dreams now aren’t those I had ten or twenty years ago.
My main dream is that my children are good, honest, kind, just and truly happy. For myself, I dream that I am organized and caught up with my “to do” list!
My dream is pretty silly but none the less it would be my own personal heaven. I would love to have a cat ranch. Think crazy catlady with enough room for everyone to be happy, healthy, safe and have room to roam. Kinda like this place http://www.cathouseonthekings.com/
As I grow older, my dreams change and become simpler. Right now, I have the dream of owning my own home and having another dog and a place to put my loom and all my fibers. I dream of spending my days with my parents and making them more comfortable and less fearful as they age. Oh, and the never-changing dream of dropping off a few pounds to take the pressure off my joints. Simple dreams — because life is good.
I am lucky enough to be living my dream. I live in LilyDale, NY the oldest spiritualist community in the united states. We have a lake, a forest, a beach, and a beautiful community. The snow is all gone now, and the squirrels are eating my crocus bulbs, even that is wonderful. We have an exciting 10 week tourist season each summer with a Victorian weekend, the making of a sand mandela by the Tibetan Monks of Loseling Temple, visitors from all over, classes, shops, food. It is a magical place to live. I live with 2 wonderful housemates who challenge and encourage me, and three horrible dogs who run the house. I have had the honor of babysitting the beautiful Isabella Pearl for the 2 years since her birth and she calls me Auntie Star. I have wonderful knitting friends and a lys just 7 miles from home. Want to share my dream, come visit LilyDale.
My dream is lots of things, to travel to New Zealand with the kids and see some of the scenery from Lord of the Rings, to travel to Canada and go on the Rocky Mountain Railway, but most of all to be better as a family at creating and nuturing, being better global citizens, respecting the environment and each other, and that the world as a whole will become a better place to live (some places are lovely already, if you are lucky enough to be born in a “nice” country) so that our kids and their kids can enjoy it!!
To be the director of a women’s studies related museum. It will be a museum that makes a difference in the lives of people like several museums have made me rethink the world. That’s my dream.
I’m studying computer programming. My dream is to have a job in that field that I love, and that pays well enough that I can afford to buy or build an ecologically responsible home.
My dream is for my husband to be able to retire and for us to move back to the north coast of California to live among the redwoods. I would love for us to live near my son and for my husband & I to live a peaceful, quiet life. I hope that we will continue to have good health and to never want for more than we can provide.
– Denise
My dream is to have a small hobby farm, and spend my days knitting, tending the animals and gardening. I’d love to have the time to bake bread and cook great meals from scratch. I’d also like that dream to fund itself without my having to go out to work! Haven’t worked out how that bit will happen yet!
I was a 19 year old single mother when I had my first baby. It was difficult to get the childbirth education and labor support that I could have used. My dream is to become a doula to help other women (especially young &/or single) to have a great birth experience and to bond with their babies and successfully breastfeed. I have wanted to become a doula for years, but have never been able to pay for the certification course. Hopefully, this will be the year!!
My dream is to one day live in a house. I’ve had this dream my entirely life. I’ve grown up in a small apartment and only ever lived in apartments. Houses are expensive to buy here (you need at least 200000β¬ to buy and move into a small house, that’s outside of the city) and I am saving up money but I am afraid that we won’t make it. I always wanted to raise my own family in a house with a nice small garden the way I had wanted to grow up. I’ll be 30 this summer and we’re planning to start our family this year, it will be difficult to save money in the coming years, I think.
I am 20 years old, and I usually get a lot of eyerolling, snorts and lectures on feminism when I dare to say out loud what one of my biggest dreams is.
I want to get married and have lots of children. I want to live in a big house with a big yard and to be a stay-at-home-mum. I don’t want ALL my life to be about house and babies, though, so I’d also like to have a small business on the side.. Like keeping an herbal garden and making teas to sell. Or working in a social office, helping young girls who’ve lost their way and have given up hope. I just can’t think of anything else that would make me ridiculously happy.
A more realistic dream (at least right now) is also pretty big – I want to overcome my anxiety and be able to live life to the fullest. I want it to stop controlling me, so I can relax and be happy. π I’m starting therapy in August, but it just seems so far away. I do what I can each day to remind myself that it doesn’t control me.
Oh, and I LOVE Susan Boyle! What a woman! We all knew that when she walked out and said she wanted to sing, everyone in the audience (and at home) were thinking “Pssh, yeah right!”. But she went out and did it! So inspiring.
My dream is to have my husband’s health back to normal sometime soon so we can start our family. kinda lame i guess but that’s totally my deepest desire!
Two years ago, my husband and I bought 18 acres of pristine land high in the Andes Mountains some 550 miles south of Santiago, Chile. It was our dream to return to my husband’s homeland and own a “parcelita”. Now, with the land duly inscribed in our name , the dream is build a small house on our seismically active land that has views of two volcanoes! Our challenges include no electricity, a rather inaccessible road in the winter and plenty of snow, rain and wind. These obstacles have not dampened our spirits as we continue to sketch our dream house, plan our garden and of course, raise the sheep for my wool addiction! Our land has a name “Rincon del Cielo” -“Heaven’s Corner”. Now, our dream is to build a house on this small piece of God’s creation.
My current dream is to exel in my exams this spring. It might not seem like a big dream, but it is to me π
My dream is to have a family home in New Zealand. The New Zealand bit is sorted (DH is from there, we’re emigrating probably this year, but definitely by the end of 2010). The family is yet to come, so part of the dream is to have a couple of healthy, happy, noisy, fun, loving kids. The home- well, I’d like to have a house with a big garden for growing vegetables, and a workshop for me where I can spin, and dye stuff (not possible in a tiny flat!), and of course, knit and crochet and store my stash! I also dream of my husband having a good job, so I don’t have to work full time, but can stay home and take care of the children.
It’s not a huge dream, but it’s mine.
So many dreams! The hardest thing for me has always been deciding which ones I wish for most so I know where to go.
I dream of being able to afford the MLS I’m due to start in September, since without it I can’t go anywhere in my beloved career of academic librarianship.
I dream that my husband will find a job he loves and finds fulfilling, and that it’ll last until he’s ready to leave it.
I dream of paying off all our debts.
I dream of owning a home and having healthy, happy children.
I dream of someday having a self-sufficient smallholding in the Cotswolds (once we get out of London!), where he can keep bees and brew mead and I can grow organic herbs and plants for dyeing and cooking and healing.
I dream of someday being able to write the PhD I’ve had ticking over in my brain for the last 6 years and becoming Dr Grim. (No, really!)
I dream, and this is pure fantasy, of a world where moths don’t eat yarn and I could admire them for being pretty without fearing for my stash. π
My dream has for a long time now been to quit my “destined” profession and take another education which is completely unrelated in every possible way. And a couple of days ago the application deadline expired. My application is in the system somewhere now, and I can’t wait to get started! Connected to this dream is my wish of getting married and having kids before it is too late, but this I don’t want to stress. When it happens, it happens. In the meantime I’ll snuggle up to my man and keep dreaming. Sometimes that’s part of the charm.
My biggest dream someday is to have one of my paintings end up in a famous museum… just one would be enough for me! Anything, I need to get back to painting. I took up knitting/spinning b/c it was a lot more portable than oil painting… I have a little room that is full of junk in my house- it is waiting for me to clean it out and begin to paint again! Soon, I promise… sometimes I use my paintings as my ravatars just so they can be seen somewhere:)
I live with a very debilitating illness and it has taken almost everything away from me. It did give me one gift though, I learned to knit as a result of not being able to do anything that I used to. I truly believe that knitting saved my life, I was very depressed and had given up on life. So my dream is to use the wonderful passion that I have gained to raise money to help find a cure or at least a treatment for this disease. I also dream that once that treatment is found that I will be able to do some of the things that I used to love once again. Although if they cured me tomorrow I would never give up knitting. It has become my comfort, my friend, what keeps me going, able to keep more of a positive attitude, and my true passion. I will always be grateful for the one thing that came into my life when everything seemed so hopeless. Even if I can’t get out of bed, I can usually knit. I am also hoping to learn to crochet. I apologize if this doesn’t seem like a happy dream, but to me it is the most joy I have had in years. Good luck to all of you on your dreams.
I forgot to mention that I live in Colorado, and living here is definitely like a dream come true. I have never been anywhere as beautiful and that has such wonderful people. I hope you make it here, you will love it!
Kimmypooh on ravelry
I’m from Denmark.
I live alone after my husbond did suicide 7 years ago caused a disease – My dream is to meet a nice man once more in my life and to fall in love again …..
I live in an economically depressed area of New York. My dream is to start a women’s fiber arts collective. I have found an organization which will sponsor this and I have a promise of some initial funding. I am currently trying to gather an initial group of women to begin to work on the fleece we have been promised and to spin and dye and knit it. Eventually I want the collective to be able to sell our products through all the yarn shops others are dreaming of having.
I want to live somewhere with a little balcony crammed with flowers — and have more time to knit.
My dream is to finish my education. I started college at 18, got married at 20 and had my first child at 23. I’ll be 39 in two weeks so this is a dream I’ve had for a long time. I’ll have an associates degree in two years but my ultimate dream is a BS. From there I want to be successful in my career. I want to have all the certifications behind my name and for people to say “hey she came into this field later in life but wow look at her.”
My dream… I’m getting there. After spending my entire life dependent on either my parents or my husband, I’m now nearly done with a divorce. I have lived on my own and supported myself (with no alimony from my ex but the help of some very good friends) for over a year, the longest I have ever done so. There are a lot of challenges still ahead, but I’m stronger and more self-confident and growing every day.
My dream is simple….to have the time to investigate my creative interests (knitting, photography, quilting, sewing, rug hooking, stitching, and papercrafts) and to be able to volunteer in schools offering free tutoring (particularly in math, reading, and career interests). I’m a professional for a nationwide bank. That’s not what I wanted to be when I grew up. I fell into it, was good at it, and it pays the bills. While I love it, it doesn’t fill me up, if you know what I mean. So the number/math geek part of me has been satisfied. BUT in the last year I’ve learned that I was totally wrong when I said I don’t have a creative bone in my body. That is something I’d love to develop to it’s fullest! And while I’ve started on that path, I’d love to have the means to devote myself to figuring it all out on a full time basis!
Fun to read about everyones dreams!
My dream is still in the taking-shape phase at this point… I am lucky to have a good job, but it really feels like work the majority of the time. I am a pharmacist in a 300 bed acute care facility so there is a ton of responsibility and pressure. My coping strategy to relieve that stress is to knit/quilt/spin like a crazy woman!
Someday, if I can swing it… my dream is: to turn my passion for creating all things fibery and crafty into some sort of a career that I actually enjoy. Maybe owning a yarn and fabric store, or teaching classes (which I love to do!) or designing things that others will be excited to make. someday!
My dream is to get hold of some of this sock yarn. You’d think in Australia we would be able to get wool but most of us shop on-line to obtain ‘the good stuff’ – especially here in the West. I love my crafts but sometimes it’s difficult. Things get lost in the post or take months to arrive and the impetus is lost. I’m sure that there are many more worthy dreams than mine however. Thanks for the opportunity!
My dream is also very simple. I want to grow old together with my wonderful husband of 40 years….and to have a sock drawer full of hand knitted socks.
My dream is to have a house. Even with the market as it is, I would still need the perfect house to be pretty cheap. Right now I live in a noisy 4-plex and I need my space and my noise and no one living above me but the weather! Come on little house, come to me!
Oh this one is easy — I have dreamed of opening a fiber store for 20 years. While I am a knitter, it could included all types of fiberness. I have not had the resources for this venture, but have had the dream in the back of my mind always. Maybe someday —
Make a positive difference in my son’s life and that we might enjoy life together once again.
One of my dreams is to work in or own a yarn store–to be surrounded by beauty and enthusiastic knitters would be divine.
Another is to play bass in Dave Brubeck’s quartet. I did fulfill my dream of learning how to play the bass ten years ago, but wish I could play a lot better. Dave is one of my musical heroes!
My biggest dream is to return to the career that I left–delivering babies–when multiple sclerosis caught up with me. I dream of a cure, of running down the street after the ice cream truck, of running up a flight of stairs, of dancing all night….I’m still well enough to walk my dog and take care of my kids, but I’m just not who I want to be without my career.
Thanks for letting me vent.
My dream is to find a way to help my God-Parents fix up the property they use to help people. They are older and it is 10 acres and things are falling apart. They do workshops and gatherings and assist people in need. Now they are the ones in need. My dream would be to raise money and helping hands to do the much needed repairs on the buildings and property so they would have one less thing to worry about.
My dream is to move to Kentucky and learn how to ride a horse. There are no jobs there for me right now, but I am expanding my skills for when the economy improves.
My dream is to one day open a HUGE knitting store/coffee/tea shop. With a vast classroom area and tons of comfy lounge area to encourage people to sit and knit and sip on yummy beverages. The lounge and coffee/tea bar would be up front so that non-knitting customers would be comfortable hanging there too. The classroom and knitting stuff would be toward the back. I would specialize in teaching new knitters and have knit nights several nights a week. Basically, I dream of the knitting store that I would like to go to on a regular basis to escape and connect with other knitters. I have no business knowledge whatsoever, but maybe when my kids are grown I will see what I can do!
My dream… It’s hard to put into words, honestly. I wish I could find a better way to balance my need/desire to work, and my need/desire to be home with my daughter.
For the past few years, I’ve been plagued with migraines for no medically “fixable” reason. My dream/wish/hope is to wake up one morning, and they’re just gone, done, over. I was so glad for this contest theme though because it got me thinking about my life, and I realized I’m pretty much living my dream – I don’t think I’d change a thing. So thanks, Sherri!
