Got a Dream? April Contest!

dsc02464It’s time for our monthly contest and I was all set to ask a different question, but then this You Tube video came through in an email from my mom and it changed my direction. (And then I promptly got it in 3 other emails, saw it on a couple of blogs, and heard Anderson Cooper talking about it on CNN last night.) What a great video! It’s all about a gutsy lady who had a dream and made something happen with it. So this month’s contest is to leave a comment and tell me what your dream is. Now I know fully well that some of you will not be brave enough to write it down for everyone to see, with your name attached! But I hope that you do. It seems like step one in any dream is to be bold and put it in writing, right? Of course not many people take the time to read the blog comments on our monthly contest (except for me!), so you don’t have to worry that someone you know might see and recognize you. On the other hand, some people DO take the time to read them and with a question like this, you could inspire a whole lot of people by putting your dream out there. I look forward to seeing what you all dream about doing or having or being, somewhere in the future. Will you share? (Hmmm – and another thought – if any of you read a comment and your first thought is, “Well I could help her/him with THAT dream. ” – email me. Maybe we can put some dreamers and enablers together to make things happen.) One of my dreams is to live in Colorado one day – thus today’s photo. We’ll draw for winners next week on Wednesday, so you have a week to leave your comment. I have some skeins of Wollmeise to give away.

Speaking of Wollmeise, we did a mini update with some of it yesterday, but since the great majority of our boxes are being held up by customs in Chicago, we won’t have more for who knows how long. In the meantime, we have a few things to take care of around here (Spring Fling, May Sock Club, “Don’t Be Blue Kits”) so even if it does arrive soon-ish, it will still be awhile before it’s going to go up. (Translation: no need to stalk and watch for it.) Maybe some of the customs agents in Chicago have had a dream to capture a case of Wollmeise for their very own….

  1. Where to start? My dream is to live in New Mexico. I’ve traveled there many times and have tried to move there, but alas, it is not to be. Every time I’m there, my soul sings and my heart is happy.

Another dream is to someday have enough money to make a large donation to the adoption agencies we used to adopt our lovely daughters. I’m thinking tens of thousands of dollars. So that less fortunate families can get financial assistance to adopt, birthmothers can get excellent care and foster families get the recognition they so richly deserve (our foster moms totally rocked and were the best). We’re lucky, we scrimped and saved to afford to adopt. Many families, especially in today’s economic times are not so fortunate.

And one more dream is to visit my brother in Thailand with my husband and daughters. The cost of the plane tickets alone cause me to nearly pass out or consider bank robbery. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity that I fear will pass before my daughters are old enough to really make that kind of trip.

  2. I have often dreamt about getting up on stage and singng a song that really moved the audience-however, I can’t carry a tune. I do admire those people, and get so excited when I watch the contestants on American Idol fulfilling their dreams. I think more time in the day would be useful too!

  3. When I was kid, I absolutely loved reading, so my dream, believe it or not, was always to be a librarian! Now that I am an adult and I have renewed my love of needlework and knitting, of course my dream would be to own a yarn/needlework store.

  4. My dream is to have a home in Pittsburgh,Pa and in Durham NC so I can be with my grandbabies, also opening a knitting store on the Outer Banks would be super duper. I love to knit and touch all the yarn in the knitting stores.

  5. I was surprised to see any of my dreams mentioned above. I have a few I’ll share:

Personal – I’d like to see my 2 children develop into happy, successful individuals

Business – I’d like to see the economy turn around so my business and my employees aren’t in danger of losing everything (this is personal too, but my husband and I are more resilient than the folks who work for us)

World – I’d like to see the United States regain it’s popularity – it used to be that we could travel almost anywhere and be welcomed – us and our money – now not so much. Lots has happened to hurt Americans and our way of life – we need to rebuild ourselves and regain the respect of people around the world.

    Peace!

  6. I would like more time. Time to knit, time to travel, time to see the world and be in it with the people I love.

The best part of this dream is that it is something I can make happen, I am sure there are more hours in the day that I am not making good use of as I could.

  7. hee! My dream is too win at least one skein of Wollmeise of course.(thats my yarn wish) but my other wish is for any of my family members to be safe and live long and so can I. Another dream/ wish of mine is to help anyone I see in trouble. One of my relatives went to hike last September and found a dirty but adorable shih tzu. She followed my relatives around and it was hard for them to leave. Then they went back tomorrow to bring her back to their house and she wasn’t there. They found her waiting for them at the area where they last met. she ate wire and anything because she was so hungry. THey later found out that the last owner had died so she was abandoned. I want to fulfill a dream that can help anyone or anything in need, no matter how dirty they are.

  8. That woman from GB is amazing. I want to watch the video again and again, for inspiration and pure joy. Also, I love reading everyone’s dreams. May we all take one step in the direction of achieving our dreams!

My dream is to open a Coffe Cafe. My DH and I are due to move to Canada in about a year or so, and that is what I would love to do when we are there. He is a Barist-O (haha) and I love cooking and baking, so I could provide the food and DH could be in charge of the coffee. Our Cafe would be a place for people to come and get away; to read, knit, study, and just be together. My DH and I are going to Canada to plant a church geared towards college/University students, or 18-29 year olds, and this Cafe would be the perfect venue for them. That’s my dream.

Anyone live in Montreal that can help? πŸ˜‰

  9. My dream is simple. I want to survive this cancer long enough to see my small children grow up and be available as their mother.

  10. My dream is to someday go to a knitting camp or vacation getaway where I can spend a few days taking classes and learning techniques with other knitters!

  11. My biggest dream is to be a mom, to have a child, perferably with my DNA. I’m 42 (didn’t marry until I was 37) and now, I want a baby. I have Lupus (SLE) and a pregnancy at my age (if I even get pregant) comes with high risks. We haven’t had much luck in conceiving, and it’s looking like we can’t afford enough rounds of IVF to get me pregnant and not to miscarry. Adoption is a viable option, but I really want to go the BIO route first. Meanwhile my biological clock is ticking…

My second biggest dream is for a cure to be discovered for Lupus. I have been in remission for a few years now ,and I am grateful and remain optimistic. But I live with the knowledge that the possibility exists that I can have a flare up again.

On a small scale, in the more do-able dream realm, I’d like to have my own internet business one day so I can be self-employed, working from home. I have ideas, but I don’t have any knowledge of how to build websites or a database for it with a search function. And there’s still the money thing. I’m not sure we have teh money to get this off the ground and not sure I’d be able to qualify for a loan. Does Web Guy work for handknit socks or other handknits????

  12. My dream is to be healthy enough to get a job and stay there for a while. This has been a terrible winter with lung infection after lung infection. But things are looking up:-)

  13. My dreams… it was difficult to narrow it down to one…
for my kids to grow to be good, honest, loving people…
for my husband and I to travel when he retires (many years from now)…
for my parents to live closer to us…

to be owner of a cool knitting store…

  14. This is so wonderful—makes me realize how many of my dreams have come true (being 59 years old helps—I’ve had lots of time!). I dream of having more time—time to see my (teenaged) daughters grow and change and be women fulfilling their own dreams. My dream is to make it to 100—healthy and alert!

  15. My dream is simple. First I have a wonderful man in my life that doens’t want to be the reason that I don’t finish school. I am 12 credit hours away from achieving a double masters degree in business administration and organizational change. My dream is to have my degree, a ring on my left hand, and little one or two to knit for. I know to some that will be a lame dream. I already dream about when I am out of grad school I can finally tackle my yarn stash. I want to knit up all of the yarn that I have bought in hopes of a certain finished project.

  16. My dream is that my children live long, happy, and healthy lives (and hopefully I’ll be there for a lot of that).

  17. I’m the mother of two teen aged girls and a professional editor. The (volunteer) work I’ve enjoyed the most over the past few years has been helping my niece and nephew, my daughter and her friends with their college applications – to help them say what they mean to say in their own voices. It’s been a great experience helping these kids use the college hunt to define who they are and where they want to go. Now, I’m lucky enough to live in a fairly affluent place with lots of well-educated people around – and my dream is to find a way to take my talents to help kids whose parents or communities aren’t so college savvy to negotiate the process. I’ve looked into finding a grant or an organization to help, but I don’t really know how to go about reaching out to them.

  18. My dream is to graduate from college and to become a youth pastor.I want to inspire high school students to live their lives with God, and to live to the best of their abilities.

  19. I dream of opening my own breakfast/lunch place. I’d serve great breakfasts (banana nut bread french toast, huevos rancheros, buckwheat pancakes, etc.) and wonderful lunches (ALWAYS homemade soups) and the best homemade pie in the world. I’d love to do that…..have thought about it for years…..but at the age of 59 I don’t know that I’d have the stamina. Hmmmm……..now I’m hungry!

  20. My dream is to be able to stay home & be a full-time Mom and wife. It’s been so long since I’ve been able to do that. My kids deserve that & my husband deserves that. But it’s not to be, since my husband is not able to work. I’m really not old-fashioned, but I believe that women are better suited for home life then men. I’m not saying my husband doesn’t do a good job but I believe that we as women look at things differently than men and of course we are more compassionate towards our kids – men are more black & white. If you have kids, you know that there’s not much that is black & white. That would be my dream.

  21. I have so many dreams…some are achievable, some are not. I would like to own a house, and not in the town I live in now. I dream that someday I’ll have a job I enjoy and it will be doing something creative with my hands. I also dream I will someday be comfortable with my body and how it looks. And, since dreams are dreams, I want to be famous.

  22. A few years ago, my grandparents had to sell the family farm due to financial issues. The farm had been in my family for over 120 years and I have many wonderful memories of growing up on the farm and playing in the woods on the 300+ acres. Selling the farm was quite devastating to the entire family, but it was especially difficult when the businessman from the city who bought the entire thing proceeded to bulldoze all the buildings (including my great-grandparents beatiful stone house that my grandfather was raised in and had been my husband and my first “home”) and log off two entire forests. He has since proceeded to do nothing with the property. I know that even after a few years it still feels strange that the land my family has been tied to and has provided us with a living for so many years is no longer in the family. My dream is to someday save enough money to buy the property back and attempt to restore it to something like it’s original condition.

  23. One of my dreams is to own my own tea parlor/gift shop (or)/knit shop. I love all things tea (dare I say more than knitting?) and when I used to work at one, it was my absolute favorite job. I’ve already got it figured out so that there would be a mini-library in the space where a person could curl up and relax with a pot of tea and fresh baked scone.

However, the economy being what it is it’ll have to wait (and I have no behind the scenes business skills, I’d want to work IN the shop. πŸ™‚ )

  24. I’m 27 and I’m in the middle of opening a business in my home town. Of course, it’s a yarn shop. There are none to speak of here and my dream is one day to be that great LYS owener that knows the entire community of knitters in her area, can help them with projects, knows all about everything and LOVES HER JOB! I aspire to be a great shop owner, learn all that I do not know but most of all, inspire the whole town to knit.

  25. My dream…mmmm I have always wanted my own house, but it’s pretty well impossible in Vancouver, ridiculous expensive for ordinary people, anyway , that’s material stuff… But I wish I could have more time to learn everything i need to learn for my crafts, knitting, spinning, weaving. Slowly getting there. Wollmeise, that would make my day, my second grandchild is due in July, that yarn would be for her/him.

  26. Wow – I wish all of you the best with all your dreams. We all have it in us to make them come true. Watching that lovely woman yesterday made me sob… and also made me confront something. For years I was an actor/singer/dancer/theatre producer and just generally an all-out theatre person… and then in the last year of my undergrad while I was working full time, and trying to finish my Honours thesis, as well as running a community theatre compant, I got bitter about the theatre world. Five years later I think it’s time to put that bitterness aside – the only person I’m hurting with it is myself. I miss the stage – being on it, behind it and near it. I miss theatre and miss the feeling that happens when a curtain goes up. My dream is to be back on the stage in a new city (part two of an unrelated dream is to move out of the city I’ve been in for 9 years and start my MSc). Thank you for giving me the inspiration to put this in writing.

Don’t dream it – be it!!! Who knew Rocky Horror could be so profound πŸ™‚

  27. My dream is to be a mama. It might be a long shot (my partner had radiation and chemo that has most likely left him unable to father kids and I had a liver transplant which makes pregnancy a bit riskier) but I remain hopeful that somehow someway someday I will be a mother.

On the less long-range plan side, my dream is to have some time off to knit and relax and sleep in a little bit. πŸ™‚

  28. Thanks for this post! I have to say that I’m pursuing my dream RIGHT NOW! I went back to school (at 37yo) to study Environmental Science. I started at my local “junior college” and am currently slogging thru my last semester. Some days its all I can do to get up and get myself there. I’m SO ready to graduate! I’m ready to be DONE! Its nice to get these reminders that this IS my dream. I can and will DO IT!

But I’m not done yet. I need to go on to the “big university.” I applied and was accepted into my dream program at the University of Washington. Not only that, but I’ve been invited to join the Global Honors program at the school. I’m THRILLED!

Had someone told me 2 years ago I’d be at this point, finishing up a successful time getting all my science and math credits done AND maintaining a 3.96 overall GPA all while raising a family (3 girls and a husband). I’d have told you that you were crazy. But now, I’m making my dream possible! It’s MINE!

  29. I dream that one day my first novel will actually be published. I dream I will finish my second novel soon and that will also be published. I dream I will get tenure in the academic library where I currently work.

  30. Well….let’s see. If I had to really think about what my dream would be it would be that I wouldn’t have to work and could be a stay- at- home mom with my 7 yr. old daughter. I have 2 grown daughters and spent their childhood working, although from home. Really worked out well but still….it would be nice to have those days with my daughter without the distractions of 12 preschoolers every morning ( I run a preschool in my home). I would homeschool her and we would go on all sorts of field trips and I would have the time to teach her to knit and cook and garden. Wow! That would be so great!

  31. Gosh. I’ve already done a lot of things I dreamed about – going to art school, buying my first home, finding a Wii right after Christmas (hah!) but there are still some things I dream about – traveling to Australia, meeting the guy I’m going to marry, publishing novels, winning an award for something on a televised awards show…

    πŸ™‚

  32. My dream would be to become independently wealthy so I could knit as much time as I wanted with wonderful luxury yarns without having work get in the way

  33. I love that video! It’s so wonderful.

My dream is to get a fantastic professor job in Seattle, WA when I finish my dissertation next year. My dream job would involve teaching really cool writing courses that I can create myself, preferably writing courses involving video, working in writing program administration, mentoring students. I’d also like to make a lot of money. I dream of paying off my student loans and traveling often with my soon to be husband.

  34. My dream is that all my pain goes away, so I don’t have to take so much medication. My brain just doesn’t work as well as it used to work, and it’s 95% due to these drugs. Anyway, I want the medication to go away so I can go back to school for my master’s degree in nursing, to be a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA).

I just know that I’m not done yet. I don’t know what I’m supposed to end up doing, but it’s not this. I’m from an entrepreneurial family of people who can not only sell ice to Alaskans, they can sell them two different freezers in which to put it. I could start my own business, like my father and grandfather did, but our credit is so lousy from my four-digit monthly prescription bill that I’d never get the money for startup costs.

So I guess my real dream is to find out what my purpose is. I can’t describe the feeling. I just know somehow. I know I haven’t gone through this 15-year illness odyssey for nothing.

  35. My dream is to become independently wealthy so I don’t have to work and can stay home with my son (and his sibling(s) that aren’t born yet).

Barring that, I want a good teaching job in my field that allows me a good balance between my family and my work.

  36. My dream is to be strong and brave enough to finally lose the extra 60 pounds I’m carring around so I can feel healty – then have the ability to quit my job and move to Hawaii so I can knit and quilt to my hearts desire! I know, I have lots of dreams!

  37. My dream is to work out the story that has been rolling around in my head for a decade. It is more the working through of the characters that I want than anything else.

I also dream for wrist transplants (damn tendonitis) so I can knit more!

  38. My dream is to have it all. Two well adjusted and happy daughters. A small acreage on a fishing lake (a real one – not a glorified pond). Something just large enough for a small flock of miniature breknock hill cheviots and a couple goats. I’d love to spin, knit, make goat cheese and yogurt.

In this dream we would either be in Michigan or at least some of my family would move down here to Illinois so we could be together more often.

My husband would be in good health and happy working on machinery, as he loves to do (in a pole barn that I can’t see from our house).

We would be able to support ourselves comfortably by expanding our current freelance endeavor and the proceeds from our collective hobbies.

    Ohhh to dream…

  39. I dream of retiring from my stressful career someday and finishing out my days living rurally on a little farm with a white house that has a wide porch where I would set up my quilting frame and sit in a big rocker and knit while I watch the sun go down. My garden would hold all of my heirloom tomato plants and peppers. I would take up canning and have a few fruit trees. All of my jars of fruits and veggies would make a rainbow on the cellar shelves. I would be able to walk to a small church where good honest plain people meet to worship and often stay after for a casserole supper. Community. I would have just enough space to tend to two alpaca, two sheep, and two goats. A German lop eared bunny named Petunia. All of my bushes would be blue hydrangeas and on the fourth of July, I would have iced lemonade and bar cookies on the porch watching fireworks over town. Next to me would be sitting my as yet non-existent grandson and my wonderful basset hound, Lily.

  40. My dream, well, dreams, sort of intersect. I want to finish losing the weight I started to lose (I’m down 75lbs, I want to lose another 75), and I want to be able to support myself with a freelance photography business, so I can move to Toronto and not have to worry about the part where I don’t have a job waiting for me so that Canada lets me in more easily, and so I can have time to write and knit and still make a living with something else that I absolutely love. I’m tired of being unemployed, and depressed, and wishing things were different, I want to *make* them different.

  41. what is my dream? i have soo many. .. ive seen a few in your dreams .but what i’d really like….

i would love to walk into my craft room one day -a real craft room with ;lots of windows and a CAPTAIN KANGAROO window seat – you know what im talking about if you’re old enough to remember the show.. Oh and lots of shelves and bins and drawers.. wall to wall…and see it full of yarns and rovings and dyes and a spinnning wheel..or two..maybe one i could take with me when i travel to all the cool yarn festivals and stuff..

  42. My dream is to finally get the braces and surgery necessary to fix my teeth. Last I checked it was at least $5,000 and that was back when I had ins. Who knows how much it would cost me now πŸ™ I’m not sure I’ll ever see that dream come true πŸ™

  43. Isn’t it funny how dreams change throughout our lives? The things we dream of as children are often so fanciful that we abandon them in our rush to grow up, lest we be viewed as children a moment longer than we find it comfortable. Too often, most of us (myself included), slog about, bogged down in our daily trials, and find it hard to even remember what dreams captivated us so very long ago. But the lucky among us hold tight to those dreams, even if only to smile at the memory of them.

For a long time, in my grown-up life, I had the grown-up dream of having a daughter. When life brought me two sons I was confronted with having to give up that dream. (If you have the time and inclination, you can read about it at pinkmamatini.wordpress.com.) I started a blog to capture the sometimes tender and often riotously funny moments of my kids’ lives, and to explore writing — which is, I admit, another dream I have long held. I could never have known that the loss of one dream was necessary to bring me these two boys — these two brothers — who bring me more pure joy than I could have ever imagined. When I wrote about the loss of that dream, the words found me. I haven’t had the time to write in quite awhile, what with a hectic life getting in the way. But perhaps the real problem is that when I think about writing about these two little gifts that life gave me, I’m afraid I won’t find the words, and they won’t find me.

So beyond the dreams for stuff and things, for futures and possibilites, I dream of words. Words that are right. Words that tell the story in my heart. Words so important that someday when my little boys are men, they will read them and know what a gift it is to be their mother.

And Hawaii wouldn’t be bad either πŸ˜‰

  44. Please don’t laugh! Truly, my current dream of dreams is to knit ALL the yarn in my stash before it’s too late. My fear is that after I’m gone all those gorgeous yarns might not fall into appreciative hands. They might just wind up being used for decorative ties on gift packages. Gotta knit faster!!

  45. My dream is to own a yarn shop. A yarn shop that would have much yarn to offer, as well as a welcoming cozy place to come knit and hang out. It would offer great coffee, tea and good things to eat.
