March Blog Contest – What’s Your Favorite…

dsc02429… mug? Or teacup?  Or your preferred container for hot beverages? This is my favorite. Some of you may remember that I have a habit of over-buying mugs/cups. I don’t know what it is.  But I have found my favorite and I think my mug-buying days are over. (Unless this one breaks.  But I know where to get another one of them.) I love the size of this, the weight of it, the feel of it, and the colors. (Mine came from here. I love their work and have purchased several things from them.) Since I’m so attached to this mug, it made me wonder if others of you have a favorite?  Tell us about it in the comments below for this month’s blog contest. We’ll randomly draw the winners from the comments and will announce them next Friday.

Today’s recipe is one of those comfort food types of things. (Good taste plus pasta = comfort.) It makes a lot and there are all kinds of things in there.  Just add some fresh fruit or a big salad to the menu and you have a meal.

dsc02425Pasta and Cabbage Casserole

1 pound spaghetti noodles, cooked al dente
3 cups shredded frozen hash browns, thawed
1 lb. sausage (or 3 chicken breasts, cooked and cubed)
2 Tbl. olive oil
1 bag of shredded cabbage slaw (or 1/2 head cabbage, shredded)
1 large onion, chopped
3 cloves of garlic, minced
1 cup (or can) of chicken broth
4 Tbl. butter
2 cups Parmigiano Reggiano Cheese, shredded
1 cup sharp cheddar, shredded
(Want more color? Add broccoli to the recipe. Yum!)

Brown sausage in skillet and drain. Add olive oil to the pan and stir in onion, garlic and cabbage, cooking until tender (about 10 minutes). Add chicken broth and heat through.

In large bowl, combine cooked noodles, hash browns, butter, 1 cup cheddar, 1 cup Parmigiano Reggiano, and cabbage/sausage mixture and mix well.  Turn into a 9 x 13 pan and bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.  Add the last cup of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese to the top and bake for 5 more minutes.

Because I don’t have quite enough knitting projects “in progress”, I picked up a book last night and have decided to make a Noro Chevron Sleeve Cardigan from Knitting Noro. Just for fun. (Although I’m not sure why I just admitted that to you. I ought to have kept quiet about it until I was almost finished.  One day I’ll learn.)

dsc02432People were eating chocolate here today. How do I know? There’s evidence on the floor. And just because there were kisses by my favorite mug in the photo, don’t be fooled. It was totally for eating scale so that you could get an idea of the mug size. (The carpeting looks a little ugly close up, don’t you think? It’s a good thing that there is a lot of beautiful yarn and chocolate around here to distract people from looking down.)

  1. Since my favorite “warm” beverage is hand-pumped ale from any great pub in London, my favorite mug is a 20 ounce pint glass!

  2. My favorite is a mug I got in Mexico city. It is also handcrafted and a deep deep cobalt blue. I love it because its so wide, fits nicely in my hand and of course the color is amazing!

  3. I have a mug that I bought for my self many years ago that is just a bit larger than than the average mug (about 10 rather than 8 ounces), and it has pictures of birds on them. I started bird watching around the time I bought it and it’s been fun over the years to note which of the birds I’ve seen and which I still have find. I don’t know what I’ll do if it ever breaks!

  4. I have two favorite mugs. One is a beautiful delicate mug that matches my dishes. The other is big and clunky and black, and says “Beware, I am armed and have premenstrual tension”. I received it as a going away gift from my workmates at a hospital that I left almost 22 years ago! I still get warm memories washing over me of those wonderful people every time I use it. Maybe I should tell them I still have that clunky, marvelous mug!!

  5. My favorite mug was a free gift from my graduate school when I attended a scholarship dinner. (I was surprised at the quality of a freebie) It’s green and narrower at the top than the bottom, with a good heft. The nice thing about a small bottom is that there is less space for hot chocolate goop to get stuck there, and more gets stirred in.

Now, I live in the desert southwest, so not a lot of hot beverages get drunk…but, you know, it’s still my favorite mug.

  6. My current favorite mug is the knitted ceramic mug that Starbucks was selling late fall early winter. I love it. I do wish it was a tad bit larger.
My other favorite mug is also a Starbucks model from about 6 years ago. It is a lapis blue color and is just the perfect size.

  7. I have a few faves; it depends on what I’m drinking. For tea I like big mugs, and my current favorite is this mug my fiance bought me at the science museum in Chicago. It says something like “you’re out of this world” on it. Cheesy, but sweet coming from him.

  8. I love my stainless steel thermos–made by thermos–because it keeps my tea nice and hot all morning long, and because I can sneak said tea into the library in my bag without worrying about spillage. Pretty and functional!–jrr

  9. My Blue Loopy Ewe Mug is used daily for coffee and is def my favorite! Because of my hand problems (nerve damage) I have to have a mug that is heavier than the avg one and has a handle big enough to acomodate all of my hand in it for stability and lifting The Loopy Ewe fits those perfectly :-)! Unlike all my other mugs I havent dropped it once!! It fits my hand perfectly and is just heavy enough I know I am picking it up without having to actually feel it!

  10. I like my Loopy mug and my other large mugs for hot tea in the morning! And like you, I have several WIP’s…I need a couple of days off to work on them!

  11. What a cool mug! My favourite one is a tall mug, black, and it has the US Army logo on the face. I suspect the Loopy mug is the same shape & size…extra tall, so that after you make your hot chocolate, there’s still plenty of room to add Bailey’s. 😀

For tea, I’ve a selection of exquisite antique teacups & saucers, some as old as a hundred years or more. I’ve also got a number of antique silver teaspoons, though those could really do with a good polishing right now. I really dig the whole production of a cup of tea, and like to make it as special as possible. 🙂

I’m trying really hard not to cast on right now. Sock Madness starts in just a couple days, so I don’t have time! I still have to finish up a pair of socks, the first pair I’ve used my own handspun in (at 80 sts around, though, it’s taking forEVER. Maybe I shouldn’t spin *quite* so finely next time). I am, however, just dying to cast on some Interlacements for a shawl…mmmm…

  12. My fav mug is a winnie the pooh mug I got when the kids were little. It is slightly oversized and just right for my morning tea. I like your mug too though, it looks like a nice size too!

  13. My favorite mug is a pottery mug that my mom gave me many years ago…It’s a beautiful aqua color and it fits perfectly in my hands.
I started two more projects this weekend…you’re not alone.

  14. I love my Starbucks mug with the knitted cables. I spent months ignoring it since I didn’t NEED another mug. No point in spending money when I didn’t have to. My husband knew I was constantly drooling over it but was too frugal to indulge. He came home one night with an early Christmas present for me. It was the mug! AND he got it during Starbucks’ sale! A man who knows how to win my heart…getting goodies for less!

  15. My present favorite coffee mug is a 20 oz. Starbucks and my blue Loopy mug is my favorite for tea and cocoa.

  16. My very mug is actually two matching green and white polka dot mugs I ordered from Southern Living. Polka dots make me happy for some reason and drinking coffee out of something with polka dots on.. well, what could be better? It’s nice having two, because one is usually clean and ready to go.

  17. I’m almost embarrassed to say it but my favorite mug is one that my husband bought at Starbucks right before we moved from Chicago to New York. It has the Chicago skyline on the side in black and white and it’s huge. We liked it so much that he bought a matching New York mug from Starbucks once we finalized the move here.

  18. My favorite mug is a 20 year old hand-thrown mug from a GA potter whose name I probably knew 20 years ago, bought at a shop specializing in the works of artists from the area. It’s wide-mouthed and heavy, so it keeps my tea nice and warm, and it’s got lovely mountain-like glazing on the sides.

  19. My favorite mug isn’t a mug at all but a 1960’s clear glass with green leaves painted on the side. Any mug or tea cup (have a huge collection) will do, as long as tea is in it.

I love the knitting Noro book and love the Chevron sweater. I have two (a tad embarrassed) sweaters I’m working on from there – both in Noro Silk Garden. The one with the shawl collar and the zip up hoodie. Both for my daughters (14 and 22).

  20. My favorite mugs are longaberger mugs. The stoneware is heavy, so they hold the heat and my coffee (or hot cocoa if I am splurging) will stay warm for a long time. Plenty of time to knit, or surf for yarn!

  21. My favourite is a glass one I got in a hot chocolate and wool swap last year. Your post has prompted me to include it in my blog post for today.

  22. Oh my goodness!!! I’m a Supreme in-the-mood mug user..I use the one for my coffee in the morning, depending on my mood. But my fave – one that I’ve had since I was 18, but don’t use much cuz I’m afraid it will break – is one I bought at an art fair in my town, and I have cared for it since. I love drinking out of this one…only when I’m sure no one else is going to wash it…hahaha

  23. Favorite tea cup? Hmm- well I don’t drink tea or coffee, so it’s not one I use. But after my Grandfather passed away, I got my Grandmother’s collection of china tea cups (which I nicely shared by letting each girl cousin pick ONE! The rest are mine, all mine!) and my favorite is a solid black tea cup. The inside is white and painted with beautiful pink flowers. All the others are solid white on the inside and decorated on the outside, but this one, has a surprise inside, and I love that.

  24. Well, it all depends if I make my coffee at home or at work. If I am at home I use my Starbucks insulated travel mug (it’s hot pink). If I make my coffee at work I use this over sized mug. Either way, I have to have some type of flavored creamer (right now it is caramel vanilla). Mmmmmmmmmm, so tasty……

  25. My favourite mug is a set of stackable latte mugs. We got the coordinating espresso cups for our wedding last summer and liked them so much that we got this larger variety too. They have a inside rim that I use as a marker for how much milk I want. Then I pop it in the microwave to heat the milk and make a Nespresso straight into the mug, stir and enjoy!

Noro Silk Garden and Silk Garden Socks are my favourite yarns right now, especially striped!

  26. My favorite mug is from Cafe du Monde in New Orleans. It is white with a green handle and purple writing that says, “Hurrican Katrina couldn’t blow the sugar off our beignets!” I love the spirit of that saying!

  27. My favorite mug is one that I bought when I was going away to college, won’t tell you how many years that was. It has pretty lavender flowers on it. Suprised that it has survived all of these years/

  28. I bought my favorite mug at the gift shop in the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History while I was a summer intern there in 1999, It’s a big, handmade mug with a grumpy purple cat painted on it. It’s big enough to hold lots of coffee, purple’s one of my favorite colors, and the grumpy cat reminds me of all the felines I’ve known and loved. And using it also reminds me of the summer when I bought it, a summer when I managed to live in a strange city by myself and when I finally figured out what I wanted to do with my life. I can’t believe I’ve had it for nearly ten years!

  29. I would have to say that I have 3 favorite mugs….and that’s pretty good, considering how full my “mug” cabinet is!!! The first resides at my parents’ house, and is one they bought me in Gatlinburg, somewhere on the “craft trail.” It’s a pottery mug and has a nice purple glaze on it (I love purple!). I use it every time I’m at their house, and I love it! The second is aa pottery mug from North Carolina. We’ve travelled to the pottery areas (Jugtown, Seagrove) of NC for many many years, and my mom got me and my DH a set of mugs the last time we went. They are read on the top and have a gorgeous salt glaze on the bottom. Love salt glaze! The third mug that I really love is from Starbucks, and it has the word “coffee” in about a dozen languages. It’s fun to read when drinking out of it.

  30. I have 2 favorite mugs at the moment-really more-well you know how it is. I do love the loopy ewe mug-the height and weight is perfect. Then just got a new one last week that says Queen of Caffeine-it too is nice and tall. Love !!! I have another mug that is a standard size that says”Well butter my buns and call me a biscuit” which makes me giggle every time I see it:)

  31. My favorite mug is one that I bought at Acadia National Park in Maine about 18 years ago that has blueberries on it It’s my favorite because that was the trip where my husband and I conceived our first born, my son, who is now 17. Everytime I drink out of it, it reminds me of that wonderful trip! Susie

  32. I have a mug I bought from a local potter – Groundhog Blues Pottery – that I love. It’s sage green, and has plenty of room for my tea. I’ve had it for years – hopefully it never breaks!

  33. My favorite is a ginormous Starbucks mug that holds exactly what my 17 oz. French press pot makes, plus lots of creamer. Yum!

  34. My favorite mug is really small and in the shape of a dog. It was my brother’s when we were growing up, and when we both moved out on our own I took it with me. He wasn’t all that attached to it, so I don’t think he minded much. 🙂 The only bad thing about it is that it’s made for a kid, so it doesn’t really hold much. Cute though!

  35. My favorite mug is one that I got as a gift from a friend’s son who works at Starbucks. It is the perfect shape, weight and size. I usually hate to use mugs that have “advertisements” on them, but I love this one. My second favorite is another Starbucks mug, one of the “knitted” mugs they had at Christmas time. My sons got it for my Christmas stocking (with a little help from Mom).

  36. My partner and I have a mismatched collection of crazy mugs from all of the places we have visited over the years. In the morning, he will say to me, “Where do you want to go today?” and I can relive all the great travel memories as I sip my morning joe. Guests in our home love to pick from fun destinations – it’s a great conversation starter!

  37. My favorite was an old (very old … maybe 20 years old!) Star Trek mug that has Kirk, Spock, Bones, & Sulu on the transporter pad. When hot liquid used to go in, it would light up as if they were beaming away! It had’nt been able to light up in the past 10 years or so, but I just love kitsch-y stuff like that!! HOWEVER, my daughter accidently broke it last year :(. Oh well, a new goofy mug will present itself oneday I’m sure!

  38. For tomato soup I have a huge, shiny blue mug. I’ve had it forever. Since I’ve said that I’ll probably break it this week.

  39. My absolute favorite mug for coffee/tea is my Loopy Anniversary mug. When I make soup in a cup though, I have several (ok, 12) Pfaltzgraf Snow Bear mugs – they have a wide mouth and hold the perfect amount of soup and the bear on the side makes my two-year-old giggle!

  40. I’m a mug person. I broke my favorite mug a couple months ago. It sported the Far Side cartoon where the dog is trying to lure the cat into the dryer by writing “cat fud” on the door and drawing an arrow. I loved that mug!

My husband recently bought me a replacement. It has a quote from Thoreau written on the side: “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you’ve imagined.” It doesn’t crack me up the way “cat fud” would, but DH is a sweetie and he wants me to be inspired. 🙂

  41. I prefer cups with saucers to mugs. My favorite cup is a gigantic white cup with blue flowers on both the cup and saucer.I got it in a swap and love it when I have time to savor a cuppa.

  42. My favorite mug is a 27-year old blue mug from Bybee Pottery in Kentucky (now 6th generation potters.) It’s chipped and probably has seen better days, I can’t drink coffee out of any other mug!

  43. My favorite mug is the one I got from Jennie the Potter (www.jenniethepotter.com) with a white sheep and a black sheep and some yarn. It’s so adorable.

PS: I have 9 WIPs, you are NOT alone.

  44. My favorite mugs are the specials ones my children sent me with my Grandchildrens pics on them…I have coffee everyday with a different grandbaby….I love Them!!!!
