March Blog Contest – What’s Your Favorite…

dsc02429… mug? Or teacup?  Or your preferred container for hot beverages? This is my favorite. Some of you may remember that I have a habit of over-buying mugs/cups. I don’t know what it is.  But I have found my favorite and I think my mug-buying days are over. (Unless this one breaks.  But I know where to get another one of them.) I love the size of this, the weight of it, the feel of it, and the colors. (Mine came from here. I love their work and have purchased several things from them.) Since I’m so attached to this mug, it made me wonder if others of you have a favorite?  Tell us about it in the comments below for this month’s blog contest. We’ll randomly draw the winners from the comments and will announce them next Friday.

Today’s recipe is one of those comfort food types of things. (Good taste plus pasta = comfort.) It makes a lot and there are all kinds of things in there.  Just add some fresh fruit or a big salad to the menu and you have a meal.

dsc02425Pasta and Cabbage Casserole

1 pound spaghetti noodles, cooked al dente
3 cups shredded frozen hash browns, thawed
1 lb. sausage (or 3 chicken breasts, cooked and cubed)
2 Tbl. olive oil
1 bag of shredded cabbage slaw (or 1/2 head cabbage, shredded)
1 large onion, chopped
3 cloves of garlic, minced
1 cup (or can) of chicken broth
4 Tbl. butter
2 cups Parmigiano Reggiano Cheese, shredded
1 cup sharp cheddar, shredded
(Want more color? Add broccoli to the recipe. Yum!)

Brown sausage in skillet and drain. Add olive oil to the pan and stir in onion, garlic and cabbage, cooking until tender (about 10 minutes). Add chicken broth and heat through.

In large bowl, combine cooked noodles, hash browns, butter, 1 cup cheddar, 1 cup Parmigiano Reggiano, and cabbage/sausage mixture and mix well.  Turn into a 9 x 13 pan and bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.  Add the last cup of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese to the top and bake for 5 more minutes.

Because I don’t have quite enough knitting projects “in progress”, I picked up a book last night and have decided to make a Noro Chevron Sleeve Cardigan from Knitting Noro. Just for fun. (Although I’m not sure why I just admitted that to you. I ought to have kept quiet about it until I was almost finished.  One day I’ll learn.)

dsc02432People were eating chocolate here today. How do I know? There’s evidence on the floor. And just because there were kisses by my favorite mug in the photo, don’t be fooled. It was totally for eating scale so that you could get an idea of the mug size. (The carpeting looks a little ugly close up, don’t you think? It’s a good thing that there is a lot of beautiful yarn and chocolate around here to distract people from looking down.)

  1. The only hot beverage I like is tea and I like to drink that out of a glass tea mug! No logos or designs, just a plain simple glass mug.

  2. I drink about 4 cups of tea a day. I have over 60 mugs and cups plus a teapot collection. My favorite mug is a tall narrow mug with wanted posters of cats on it. I have a lid from another cup that fits on top. The narrowness of the mug and the lid combine to keep my tea warm for an extended time and allow me to tote my mug all over the house without spilling.

  3. I have two big mugs I rotate for morning coffee. Then there are the cappuccino mugs, and the holiday mugs… The favorite seems to be whichever is the most recently acquired.

  4. MUG! I have three current favorites, a very large Starbucks logo mug, my Loopy Mug and the Starbucks Holiday Mug. Tea Cups are too much of a hassle these days and they don’t hold enough of my preferred liquid refreshment!

  5. I love teacups, but finally I got tired of cold tea (forget to drink it while I’m knitting) and have picked a mug I like. My Grandson gave it to me when he was 5 years old (he’s 17 now), he bought it with his own money for a Christmas present.

  6. My two favorite mugs are the Starbucks Holiday Mug – red with snowflakes on it. That mug lives in my office. The other is the Starbucks cabled mug. That one is patterned and textured to look like knitted fabric, and I have two of them -one at home and one at Bill’s.

  7. I rotate mugs – different ones for seasons of the year, holidays. There is a whole cabinet full in the basement – where no one will look. Right now its a large mug with chickens on it – getting ready for Spring.

  8. my favorite is just a plain coffee mug but it has a little native american girl on it holding a bird and says “expect miracles.” I don’t know if it’s my favorite becaus of the mug or because my Mom sent it to me as a present.

  9. I have my Loopy Mug for coffee and a Raku glazed one for tea that has a tea infuser built in.My old favorite ,though, is a chipped yellow mug with a giraffe on it that my son picked for me at the St.Louis Zoo when he was a pre-schooler.I haven’t had the heart to throw it out.

  10. Hmmm, depends on what I am drinking. If it is hot tea I love my bone white china tea cup and saucer, the tea looks gorgous in it and I feel the aroma is easier to access. But coffee, I want a heavy mug, my favorite is covered in Autumn colored leaves and it keeps my coffee hot until I am finished. It is so heavy that I don’t knock it over easily in my sleepy stupor.

  11. I collect mugs when I travel, and rotate them whenever I get a new one. My current favorite at the office is a beautiful hand painted one from a trip to Mexico last year. The favorite at home is from the Hershey store in New York City. Now that I think about it, it’s been over a year since I’ve had a vacation and I’m due for another mug-seeking trip…

  12. I prefer the mugs, too. Yours is so pretty. My current favorite is one that has a folk art cat picture on the outside.

  13. Favorite mug? Well, I have a couple. There is the clay mug my college housemate gave me (many) years ago. There are the mugs my mother had made for a couple of listserves she was on, back in the day when the internet was just starting. And I have a china tea cup and pot that are just perfect for those days that need a little refinement.

WIPs seem to be going through a spring growth spurt. I just started a shawl with CTH yarn. I’m on #2 of a pair of socks and I’m swatching for a sweater. Oh, and I’m thinking about making a summer top from some cotton I have in my stash. Oh, and I just saw a pattern for anthor pair of socks that I like….

  14. My favorite mug is one that I cannot remember where it came from but it has a badly drawn chicken on it. I like it because it big, holds alot of coffee or Earl Grey, and shows you do not need to be a competent artist to be a good mug. The chicken really is ugly, in fact, it is debatable whether or not it can actually be construed as a chicken at all. But its my mug and I say it is a chicken, so therefore it is a chicken.

  15. My fav is from the Mirage Hotel in Vegas…it has an indent where the handle is to easily hold in you entire hand… I hold my mugs with my whole hand so this is perfect for me…

  16. I have two favorite mugs. For morning coffee, I use a blue Scandinavian one that’s fat with a narrow neck. It seems to retain heat the best. My afternoon cocoa mug is a floral one from April Cornell. Too bad that store is now defunct. I really loved their stuff.

  17. My favorite mug is from Disney. It’s a Winnie the Pooh Tig’r mug and it’s HUGE! I got it as a Christmas present years ago and I use it mostly on weekends 🙂 so I associate it with relaxing and having fun.

  18. My favorite mug is any one that is holding coffee. Just kidding. My new favorite mug is the Starbucks Cabled coffee mug that they were selling at Christmas. It just gives me that warm feeling to drink coffee out of while I am knitting.

  19. I picked up my favourite mug at a craft show a couple of years ago. It is handmade stoneware from Muskoka Bay Pottery and is a lovely cobalt blue. It is also a bit bigger than an average mug, which suits me just fine. I love it so much that I have forbidden anyone to put it in the dishwasher, even though it is supposedly dishwasher-safe. I don’t want anything to happen to the glaze.

  20. I have several favorite mugs. Usually there isn’t a clear reason why I decide one or the other is my favorite. I think it has something to do with shape and sometimes also with the heaviness of the mug. I much prefer those that are slightly heavy. It does bother me if one of my favorites isn’t clean when I need it!

  21. I also have a love of handthrown pottery. My favorite is an oversized clay one that my Dad brought be back from Montana. It’s in blues and browns with mountains, pine trees and moose.

  22. My favorite mug “right now” becuase it has changed from time to time is one my hubby bought me from Starbucks. It looks like their paper cups even has the hot beverage warning. I think it is my favorite because it holds 10oz of yummy coffee and I am all about more coffee!

  23. Oooh, I have the mug-buying addiction too. My favorite is from Starbucks about 5 or 6 years ago. It looks like a plain white large mug on first glance, but there’s a small snowman face on the side by the handle, and the handle is curved like a snowman, so it looks like he lives in the mug :o) It’s like sharing my coffee with a friend every day. :o)

  24. I also have two favorite mugs – one is the loopy ewe blue one – it exactly fits the brew from my mukka cappacino pot (meant for two cups) that I have every morning and the other is one is light blue with a beach scene in darker blue (I have always wanted a place at the beach and this one takes me there!)

  25. I don’t really have a favorite mug, unless it would be one of the soup mugs!

My first thought when I saw the kisses paper was – what yarn made that so pretty???

And you’re not alone on the multiple WIPs! Or UFOs either! Looked in Ravelry for that new sweater, but there wasn’t a picture. Shoot! I’m sure yours will be pretty!

And that recipe sounds yummy! Cabbage isn’t hubby’s favorite, but maybe we’ll try it anyway!

  26. My favorite mug is about 1/2 size larger than “normal” mugs. It’s a dark cream color with two pairs of brightly colored flip-flops on the side and underneath it says “Friends Forever”. I bought two of them and took them with me when a friend and I took a girls’ trip to Mexico. I gave her one and kept one and it’s been my favorite ever since. Whenever I use it it brings back memories of the two of us drinking coffee on our balcony looking out at the ocean. Awesome!
Thanks for the recipe – I’m always looking for new things to try and this looks like it’s worth a try.
    Sarah

  27. Mine is the Starbucks cabled mug, not just because of the cable knit pattern, but because someone I really like and admire gave it to me!

  28. Sheri, when I saw your new mug I thought it might have come from Ayers pottery in Hannibal(my hometown). I checked their website and they do have mugs but not the shape you bought. It’s great!

My favorite mug is my Fiestaware mug in turquoise. It’s the perfect size!

  29. Oddly enough my favorite mug is nearly identical to your own.

Last September I attended our small Endless Mountains Fiber Festival in Harford, PA. While checking out all of the various vendors I came along one that was featuring hand made pottery bowls, vases and other items. She had about 10 mugs hanging on a display. None of them were exactly the same but most of them were more or less of a kind, tall with mostly straight sides. There was but ONE that was small, very round with a curved lip (such as yours) and a nice wide handle for safer and surer gripping, with a deep enough curve that your fingers won’t be burned as you hold your cup filled with very hot tea or coffee. I checked every mug she had, and then compared them in heft against the little round one. I found myself going back to that little round mug every time. Finally it sunk it this is the one that was meant for me. And so it is. My little mug is a solid tan in color, and the only real difference I can see from your own is that my little mug does not curve out at all on the bottom. It is very round, and then the base is just flat. Like yours, this had become my “favorite” cup. It fits my hand perfectly. Has a nice wide lip and a good sturdy handle. The way a mug should be. I hope to find this vendor again this Fall when they hold the next Festival.

  30. I think we all get Spring Fiber…er, Fever at this time of year. I swore I’d finish a sweater, and since that statement I’ve knit to completion three projects and have two more on the needles that I’ve started since then as well.

And then the new Knitty came out. I’m doomed.

  31. To preface this, I must say that I love cats and the color purple and I was thrilled to find the combination in a MUG. I was at a little artisan community north of San Diego and there I found this treasure. One side of the mug has a cute little black cat surrounding by purple dots and on the other side has the words “Feline Groovy”……Get it !! And then the inside of the cup is painted pale purple. Additionally, the outside of the cup is done in off white and has swirls of pale green and purple swirls giving you the ’80s feeling. It certainly is unique and as I result I can get a little over cautious but then that is why I love it so much and it gives me such joy.

  32. Vickie Square says in her article in the latest IK to start as many projects as possible. Keeps the creative process moving forward. Enjoy!

  33. Hi Sheri,
My favorite mug at work…. is the red loopy mug that I traded a skein of wollmeise for and I also got that great blue loopy shopping bag.

My favorite mug at Home… My loopy blue mug from the sock club.

Your recipe looks great but today I’m doing cornbeef and cabbage in honor of St Patrick.
    Have a great weekend.

  34. I have a couple of mugs that I got from my sister about 5 or 6 years ago. She works cleaning dorm rooms and that year the school she works at gave the kids mugs to try and save on paper cups.

They are plastic and insulated so my tea stays hot for a lot longer than with a regular mug. I have a green one at home and a black one at work.

My blue Loopy mug sits next to my chair where I knit and holds pretty knitting needles! 🙂

  35. I don’t have one particular favorite mug, but I do have mugs that I prefer over others at work. It’s strange that it matters!

Your mug is cool! I’m glad you found one that you love! I tend to buy a lot of mugs too. Maybe one day I’ll find the perfect mug.

  36. My very favorite mug is clear glass with a lid and a tea infuser that fits right in the mug. The glass is the type used for lab equipment and it seems to keep the tea very hot for a long time–hate it when coffee or tea cools in the cup.

  37. I have two favorite mugs. One is a tall skinny one with chef cats around it. It is much cuter than it sounds. The other one is a very large green mug from the TV show Psych. It is one of my favorite shows. Isn’t it nice to drink your coffee or tea from your favorite mug?

  38. My favorite teacup is a beautiful pottery piece that is a cup without a handle. Instead it has a perfectly placed indentation for a thumb. It is a lovely robin’s egg blue.

  39. My absolute favourite mug is in the shape of a MOOSE! It is sort of a 3D mug. I have had it for years and I love to drink my morning coffee out of it. Part of the antlers broke a few years ago and I had someone fix it for me. I LOVE my Moose Mug!

  40. I LOVE hand made mugs! I’ve taken to purchases them on our vacations. I’m thrilled to know of another ‘source’ for a day trip to CT!

  41. My favorite (right now) is the valentine one this year from Starbucks, its red and has many embossed hearts on it!

  42. I have a favorite coffee mug – it lives at my Mom and Dad’s house – it’s red and it has a mouse on it. I love mice, donkeys and bats (yes, I’ve had people tell me I have problems). Anyway – I love to visit and use that mug. My second favorite – that I use every single day at my house – is my blue Loopy Ewe mug. I like the shape and the size alot.

  43. My absolute favorite is my Longaberger pottery mug. It is sturdy and substantial. Funny I only like drinking out of the solid colored ones and NEVER use the originals I purchase which have a pattern on them. Go figure?!

  44. My favorite mug is a plain white Simple Additions mug from Pampered Chef. It’s just big enough, but not too big, and not too heavy. I love that it is so plain, but it’s interesting with a square shape. I don’t think they make them anymore, though. They’ve changed the design I believe. It’s my go-to sitting around drinking coffee or tea cup.

For travel, I have to swear by the stainless travel mug I picked up (for WAY too much money) at Disney years back. It was a special trip, so I wanted a souvenir that would last and be useful as well. I didn’t have a good travel mug, so I got one and my DH got a different one. It was entirely too much money for just a travel cup, though, but I have to say that it’s the best one I’ve ever had. I still use it all the time and it keeps my beverages really warm. Not sure I think the cost was worth it for just a travel mug, but I like to think of it as our special trip souvenir AND a travel mug. So it was worth it when I think of it that way. 🙂

Can’t wait to see that Noro sweater…sounds interesting!

  45. My favorite is similar to the one in your photo. I love the speckly finishes (yes, that’s the scientific term), and turquoise combined with brown and grey. Mine curves in at the top also which helps keep my tea warm. Can’t have cold tea! Well, not cold tea that’s meant to be hot….

The pasta and cabbage casserole sounds awesome. I think it will go on this week’s menu.
