No Mail Monday

It’s a No Mail Monday here in the States. We are celebrating President’s Day. I have come to appreciate days with no mail. Since we can’t ship any orders out, and since most of the Elves have their kids home from school today, we all take the day off. And I love long weekends! So I came in today just to get a jump on printing out all of the weekend orders and to get this quick blog post up. Then I’m heading home (via Starbucks) for some knitting time. (Now wouldn’t you think I’d take this opportunity to do some spring cleaning? Or laundry? Or grocery shopping? Or baking? Nope. It’s a day OFF.) If you put an order in over the weekend, we’ll start shipping them out first thing tomorrow (Tuesday).

dsc02386I finished another Noro scarf over the weekend. I see what people mean when they say that these are addictive. They’re so brainless to knit, and there are days when that is just what you need. I used 4 skeins of Noro Silk Garden, Worsted (2 of one color, 2 of another – can’t remember what colors I pulled off the shelf). You cast on about 34 stitches and K,P,K,P the whole way down and back. (Down and back with one color, then down and back with the other color.) It makes a long, thick, very warm scarf. I have a lot of scarves (ahem – scarf addiction) but I frequently find myself wearing the other Noro scarf I made like this. It’s just so warm and colorful.Β  I’m going to try to stop knitting these for awhile now. We’ll see how that goes.Β  Good news – we have more Noro Silk Garden going up in this week’s Sneak Up, so you’ll have more color choices in case you want to make one. Also going up, Lime & Violet’s Intentions yarn, Lorna’s Laces, Dream in Color Classy (a few more colors), Tuscan Grove Bellagio, Shibui Silk Cloud, more new colors of Cascade Eco Alpaca, Perchance to Knit, and Schaefer Andrea. We’ll get these new things up just as soon as we get some of the weekend orders out and on their way.

So what are you up to on this No Mail Monday? Life as usual? Or taking a day off?

Sheri whohasanappointmentwiththeaccountanttonightfortaxes,blah.

  1. I’m glad you and the Elves are enjoying your day! Life as usual here except my kids are out of school – luckily they’re old enough that they can be home and get around on their own. It’s pretty here in northern New England – in the mid-30s and sunny. I’m sure that’s a weather tease as a storm is on its way on Wednesday evening!

  2. Beautyous scarf, Sheri! Love how all the colors flow together.
Nope – no day off for me. Ironically, I’m working and DOING peoples taxes today. No rest for the weary at a CPA firm πŸ™

Have a wonderful, relaxing day knitting!

  3. Its a normal Monday here. Kiddos have school + hubby has to work = mommy running around like normal and maybe a little time this evening for knitting. πŸ™‚ One could only hope! I have a sock on the needles that I want to finish so bad I can taste it. And I really think someone might notice if I have warm new socks and no clean undies, dirty dishes and no dinner. Rats!

  4. It’s life as usual except for banks and post office being closed. I don’t even think schools in NC close for this one. If I were at home, I’d be knitting, reading, movie watching, anything but cleaning and working on my taxes.

  5. My husband took a surprise 2 wks off, so I’m trying to get use to him being around all the time.gggeeeeezzzz can’t get anything done. Our teenage grandson stayed the weekend, so we are going to take him back home and have lunch with our daughter. Then, maybe, stop by a yarn store? That usually doesn’t work well with him in the car. He is nice about it, but I still feel like I have to hurry. Then home to clean carpets and go for a walk…it’s a beautiful sunny day here in Seattle area.
Hope you are all enjoying a day off like Sheri.

  6. It is my birthday so I am washing and waxing the kitchen floor….yes I know, but it makes me happy and with two pups it gets dirty really fast…LOL…..enjoy your day off.

  7. I’m glad that you are enjoying your day off. I’m working today and earning my spending money for April πŸ™‚ (or is it more spending money?)

As soon as it quiets down, I’ll be knitting on my socks.

Have a great rest of the day πŸ™‚

  8. I wish I had the day off. Instead, my co-worker and boss are out this week so I’m running around like a chicken with its head cut off… or a knitter with no yarn or needles! Egads!

  9. Hey, Sheri, we here in Taos were very happy to have Elf Donna at our Saturday knitting group at Weaving Southwest this past Saturday. She said she’d be back to see us next week. I let her tell you if she’s having a good time or not, but she certainly seems to be!

  10. Glad you are enjoying the day off. I have been doing laundry all day and knitting a little in between. The kids have school as usual here, with “in school observation of the holiday”
I may go for a walk when the youngest gets home, it is chilly, but sunny and beautiful here.

BTW: I can’t get pictures to load. Do you know if there is a problem with the site? I have not had trouble loading them anywhere else

  11. It’s a normal school day here, except our youngest son called home at noon to ask to come home because he’s not feeling well. I understand why, as it is some sort of respiratory thing going around, that we both have. πŸ™ And, I’m still trying to get all of our business tax stuff pulled together for the CPA to do the one annual form that he does for us (1120S), sigh!

I hope you have a great afternoon off, Sheri! How’s Susan doing? I’m thinking about her! πŸ™‚

  12. This is not a holiday for my firm, but as most of Washington, DC is closed down today it’s like a ghost town. My commute via Metro (the subway) is normally an hour door to door, and about the same or a little longer by car. I drove today, though, and I was at my desk in 30 minutes flat. I might as well have stayed home for as much as I’ve gotten accomplished today . . .

  13. Federal worker here, so I am loving my three-day weekend. And I am smack dab in the middle of one of those Noro scarves. Really, I just joined the third and fourth skeins. And already I am thinking, “Ooooh, new Noro colors? Hmmm. I could do another one of these….”

  14. Great scarf – they ARE rather addictive aren’t they?? No day off around here! We are trying to get ready for Stitches South so lots of dyeing and pottery going on. We had a well-rested weekend though. Have a great day off!

  15. Love your Noro scarf. I’ve been wanting to make one, but with 3 scarves already on needles, I’m trying to make myself finish one before I start another, and I already have yarn for a clapotis. FPS. Maybe I’ll just pick out some yarn during the sneakup. Ha

  16. I was off today – I’m a school counselor. The kids and I went to the dentist this morning (can’t have them missing school! LOL), then they went to their dad’s for the rest of the day. I went to my LYS to knit with friends, and ran some errands. πŸ™‚

  17. Knitting Baby Monkeys from your adaptation, Sheri. They are so quick and fun. Am going to walk the dogs in a few minutes, then MORE knitting.

  18. I’m working today. Bleh. And I was hoping I’d get my order from the last Sneak Up, but you just reminded me that I won’t be getting mail today so Bleh again.

  19. It’s a long weekend for me. Time for medical appointments. Time to catch-up on chores I normally put aside at the least provacation. Time to work on taxes. Or…time to take an unplanned nap. And then, well, I could work on some of the above. Or, I have a sock that’s about 1/2 inch shy of doing the toe decreases. Hmmm.

  20. I’m one of the lucky ones..4 day weekend! Lots of running around Fri. and Sat. but got some rest and knitting time in Sun. and today. πŸ™‚

  21. My school (University of Oregon) would rather celebrate 1 dead black guy than 45 white guys, 40 of whom are dead. In other words, they give us MLK off but not President’s day. I think they should give us both, but I’d rather have President’s day because it’s at the point in the quarter where you need a 3-day weekend. Whereas MLK is only the second weekend (& beginning of week 3). But they have to look all “inclusive”, despite the fact that it’s not really that much more diverse than any other school.

  22. Off from work today. I’ve been sick since Friday so hopefully one more day will get somewhat back to myself. Not much knitting this weekend, or anything else.

  23. Hunh? Down and back with one color and then down and back with the other color? I don’t get it. Is there an official pattern somewhere?

Today…stash management. Finishing up a couple of projects. Tomorrow after the cleaning people leave I think it’s gonna be “blocking central”. All spread out on the family room floor….

  24. The college I attend does not close during this holiday, so it was a regular day for me. In fact, my chemistry class started today. I worked on my licorice sock a bit this morning. I’m on the foot now.

  25. Boo hoo! I work at a college too and we are here at work. Actually the college celebrates Presidents Day in December–gives us a longer break over winter. So I’ll get it in about a year! LOLOL Hope you all enjoyed your long weekend.

  26. Life as usual here today – our school was IN, although delayed by two hours b/c of a little wintry precip – and during the two hour delay I got to knit a little & spin a little – YIPPEE! I’m glad you guys had the day off – you deserve a rest!

  27. i work at night in a hospital. for me, there is no such thing as a holiday, except of course the extra dollar an hour that day. weekends are the same. the nice thing is that i have job security. there’s no shortage of sick people.

  28. Obviously it was just another Monday over here, but it’s nice that some of you were able to celebrate President’s Day! (Anyone else old enough to remember when we had Lincoln’s birthday followed by Washington’s birthday? One of my aunts shared her birthday with Lincoln and another one shared hers with Washington, so in our family they were special days) I’ve been resisting the siren call of the Noro scarf (too many scarves on the needles) but you may have pushed me over the edge with that one, Sheri!

  29. I enjoyed my day off yesterday. I went on a couple of nice walks and made a German pancake for breakfast. There was some knitting, but it was garter stitch and that is just boring as all get out right now.

I really like the look of the Noro Scarf, but it just seemed really expensive to make a scarf with 4 skeins of that yarn. But they look so nice and seem to work up so fast (or maybe it is just that so many people are making them that there is a new one coming off the needles every day or so) that is looking more and more likely that I will break down.

  30. My son had school yesterday as well so I cleaned house (we had the neices and the “boy” this past weekend) and scored me some knitting time!! I finished the first sock of my sons 3rd pair (hope this one fits longer, sigh…) and got started on the second one. Today I will most likely work on the DiC Cable and Lace Cardi for my Grandma and and do mot much else πŸ™‚

  31. Yesterday was Family Day here so we had the day off too. We took the kids to a local coservation area for hiking. The park also has a farm and we saw newborn baby bunnies, and some older ones, born on Christmas Eve. They were too cute for words! Also some sheep about to lamb in the next couple of weeks, horses, goats etc. Later we had some more of the Valentine’s cookies which the girls made from your recipe. They’re a great hit! So yummy! Thanks, Sheri, and glad to hear you had some time off, too.

  32. So glad that you and the elves are getting some down time. Y’all deserve it!!! It’s just a regular day around here. We homeschool and our homeschooling association has a co-op that we participate in on Mondays. No down time here. πŸ™ And of course I am expecting some new knitting needles to come(est. time of delivery Feb16th), but with the post office being closed I will have to wait another day. Ugh! Enjoy your time off!!!

  33. I had yesterday off too (from work, that is), but my yarn stash outgrew it’s room so I moved yarn all day! Have been finishing up a lot of things so I’ll be ready to start new things soon.

  34. Me? I had to work, but left early to go to a very long opera. Tristan und Isolde. It was great. I had a very good time. My mom? Not so much… And BFF Liz has the cold from h*ll, so she couldn’t go.

  35. Love your Noro scarves!

I spent Monday recovering from Madrona (fiber arts retreat in Tacoma, WA). I had a half or full day class EVERY day and boy, is my brain full of new knitting info. I was glad I had taken Monday off (not a holiday so a vacation day) so I could sleep in, sort through my new purchases and class materials and just generally laze around. You are absolutely right on those kinds of days Sheri – NOT for a bunch of errands and cleaning or whatever – a rest day means REST.

    And knitting!

  36. I spent Monday at a Service Day for work…I got to volunteer at a non-profit here in DC helping them with their fundraising software and processes. I loved it!

Can’t wait to see you this next weekend, should be wonderful πŸ™‚
