Things that bug me.

DSC00834.JPGDragonflies. I don’t get them. They are buzzy and crackly and flitty and if one ever flies in my face I will scream. This guy was outside on one of our shrubs and he was huge. I know that people have dragonfly jewelry, and sew with dragonfly fabrics, and have dragonfly logos. What is the draw? Fill me in.

Other things that bug me today:

1. Bill paying. I hate bill paying day and I waste so much time doing everything BUT the bills on days like today. There really is no reason not to like it. I just get tired of all of the stuff – envelopes, stamps, stubs, return address labels, checks, etc. (Yes, I do pay some online, too.)

2. Heat. We are under a heat advisory for the entire cotton-pickin’ week. That means the heat index is supposed to go over 100 degrees every day this week. Great.

3. Yarn in boxes. Funny to have yarn on this list, but it does bug me when gorgeous stuff comes in and it has to sit in a box for a week or two, waiting its turn to be photo-ed and put up. Today? Big boxes of Fleece Artist Cashmere, Sea Silk, and Mini Maiden arrived. It’s gorgeous. And more of that wonderful BFL yarn from Gypsy Knits! But it all has to wait its turn to go up. Hopefully next week.

4. Calories. I was so dismayed to find out that my Grande Peppermint Mocha has 300 calories. 300 calories, for pete’s sake!! It has severely cut into my PM intake. (And I think that makes me cranky. But I digress.)

5. Computers. I had written this whole blog entry and clicked to add the dragonfly photo. Instead, the entire entry disappeared. I had to write it over. I was not happy.

But on the brighter side:

1. The bills are done and paid for the month.

2. The air-conditioning is working full blast and keeping things very comfortable in the house.

3. At least I get to play with all the new yarn for a bit. It flies out of here once it goes up on the website.

4. I may need a PM today anyway. The heck with the calories.

5. The blog entry is done again. This time I will save it before adding the photo. (Not that it was my fault before….)

So – anything buggin’ you today? Or can you clue me in about what there is to like about dragonflies?

Sheri mymum-in-lawworkedonassemblingsockclubgoodiestodayforournextshipmentyeehaa!

  1. hi sheri. i love dragonflies. i think it is their lacey wings i’m attrached to. i also hate too much heat and any that comes with humidity. i also hate paying bills. time i can use knitting instead. have them on auto pay and do 1 online payment a month. but, i love yarn and your blog. thanks for persevering today! keep cool. hugs to you.

  2. OMG! I’d better cast on for the last sock club sock FAST! (Almost done with endless ruffle; plan to bind off tonight)

  3. I’m with you on the bill paying. I hate it like nothing else in this world. Though I pay most of mine online, a few I’m unable to do it that way.. and it drives.me.nuts. I do love dragonflies though. I even have a tattoo of one!

As for whats bugging me? Goodness. I’m working on a contract project and it calls for a technique with which I’m not used to. I’m not finding answers in any of my books, nor on google and its making a vein form in my forehead.

  4. Well, my city is swarmed with mosquitos every summer (really, picture what you think is bad and multiply that by like 40) and dragonflies eat mosquitos so we’re quite the fans over here! What’s bugging me? Having to want another hour to leave for my road trip *sigh*

  5. My mom! I probably shouldn’t admit that publicly, but today, I allowed her to get under my skin so much that I have a giant headache right now… sigh…

Must go play with some pretty yarn now. : )

  6. I live in South Central South Dakota. We have Purple Martins here……….we have 36 little apartments for them. Right now there are many baby birds in the nests and I see the parents bringing them big, delicious meals of Dragonflies. ACK!!!! I guess that is one of the reasons we have Dragonflies here in the summer. They also remind me of tiny helicopters………………..silly me …..
    Sandy

  7. I can’t weigh in on dragonflies. Sorry. It is too hot here in lovely St. Louis to worry about giant eyed flying creatures. I suppose they are just fine but they are not on my radar screen today.

NOW——- the Fleece Artist Cashmere??? Honey, THAT is on my radar screen!!!!

What’s buggin me? As usual on a Monday day off that never IS a day off I am grumbling about a weekend full of folks that don’t do their jobs, or care about their jobs, or just want to cooperate to make life more pleasant for the rest of us who work our tuckus’s off!!!!!! Yikes.

See Sheri, the way I look at it is that if we don’t get a bit cooler we BOTH may continue in our crankyness! 🙂

  8. Heat, big time! Sacramento summers always have temps in the 90-100 degree days, the “wonderful dry” heat … not wonderful in my book, wet or dry!

Dragonflies don’t spook me, but pincher bugs (you know the kind I mean), and the yellowjacket wasps send me bonkers! And both are prevalent during the summer months.

And knitting something like the BBS (Big Black Socks) for the Socks for Soldiers group, and discover AFTER the heel is completed, that the leg of the sock should be about 12 inches and then add the 2-1/2 inch heel flap instead of making the leg over 14 inches and then adding the heel flap. Some soldier better have really long legs in order to wear these socks!

  9. 1. They eat the bloodsuckers.

    2. They were big in the art deco period, and that’s just kinda pretty, when they’re all stylized. (Bugs is still bugs ’round here.)

    3. Their butts are striped like a sock.

    🙂

  10. Dragonflies are great for mosquito control You are lucky to have them in your yard. I too dislike the heat and the humidity that comes with here in Indiana. I hate bill paying, And the grande white chocolate Mocha Frap I love the most is 410 cals/160 from fat (yikes!) so go ahead and enjoy that PM , I always pretended they were calorie free, thanks for that hit of reality 🙁

  11. their butt are striped like a sock….that made me laugh!

You know what’s bugging me? The fact that I have a cart loaded up and still can’t decide what I need to get from TLE. Yep, it’s a big problem.

  12. The 100 degree heat this week is to make up for all of the beautiful last week. I hate summer time. Give me 35 degree days anytime over this.

Job update: I’m working at the same place again because they gave me health insurance (long story resolved), but I’m looking into working at a bank. There are two being built within an 8mi radius of my house, so cross your fingers for me.

Anyway, since I have a job again, I’ll see ya tomorrow.

Oh, and the dragonflies appeal to me the same way spiders do. I don’t like flies, mosquitoes, gnats, or ants. Dragonflies and spiders eat those things. That’s why I’ll never kill a dragonfly or a spider.

  13. Hmm, dragonflys – well, they are very unique looking and as Miss Violet said – their butts are striped like a sock.

I hate cars and car repairs – my wipers aren’t working and we are in for a storm….I may get stuck at work : (

But, at least I have a pretty, cute and reliable car. Expect the wipers. How’s that for the bright side of things.

  14. OH! I forgot to mention that I thought of the perfect pattern to knit for Q3–the Norwegian Stockings from Folk Socks. That’s gonna be a challenge, all right.

  15. Humidity bugs me. I can’t stand air conditioning… I like to keep the windows open and breeze blowing through. I can take the heat, if the humidity doesn’t go too high.
Can’t say that I’ve ever really given dragonflys much thought. I hate spiders….

  16. I’m not crazy about anything that is a bug. However, everything has a role in our
ecology. I just want them outside where they belong. What’s really bugging me
is someone ripped off my credit card number. It has to be the web because it’s
the only place I shop anymore. Go ahead and have your latte. Your probably
burned up the calories being angry at everything that was bugging you today.

  17. I’ve always really loved some bugs, really hated others. Dragonflies have always been on the really-love list. They may be predators in the insect world, but they seem so delicate with their lacy wings and pretty jewel-toned colors. Also, and I know this probably sounds silly to someone who doesn’t like them, but I view them as friendly. I have a memory of one taking a breather on my arm one hot day at the river for a few minutes… neither of us bothering the other, just bobbing along in a boat. There aren’t many bugs that I would allow to rest a spell on my person for any reason!

What’s bugging me today… the heat and the increasing inability to get comfortable in any position with the baby bump! Also the knowledge that we’re going to be paying up the wazoo for staying cool with the AC when the electric bill comes. I want to shut it off, but I will meeeeeelt.

  18. I think it’s the colors of the dragonflies that are so alluring. I with you on the heat….hate it! The only thing buggin’ me today is that I have to weed through all my junk to prepare for our move in Sept. I hate going through boxes.
Oh Goody, is it really time for the next shipment? 🙂 When will you invoice for the next shipment?

  19. Yup, dragonflies eat bugs and bug larvae, so I can get over a bit of revulsion for that benefit. And I suppose people enjoy their bright colours and lacy wings.

Go for a brisk 20 minute walk at and don’t worry about the calories in your PM! You CAN knit while walking, butI find my pace suffers when I get to any fiddly bits.

What’s bugging me: I can’t get off Ravelry long enough to do any knitting.

  20. What bugs me today? We are in the middle of a drought in OH. I have four more days of real work before I can play all weekend with yarn and dyes. But today is mostly super. I have nice new highlights in my hair. I won an internet contest. And I have two boxes of new yarn and fiber waiting for me at home.

I am very ready for the update. Bring it on Sheri!!! 🙂

  21. I love the look of dragonflies. There is something elegant about them. Now we are loaded with fireflies. Beautiful from a distance, but they have to be the ugliest things up close when their butts are not blinking. And they are much bigger than you would think.

What’s bugging me? I don’t have an unlimited yarn budget.

And I can’t wait for the next sock club shipment! More yummy yarn!

  22. Dragonflies are OK in my book because they are not known to bite people. However, flies, spiders, ants (after an experience with fire ants in Houston) and other people-gnawing bugs are screech-worthy.

  23. HI Sherri, It sounds like the heat is getting to you. It would me, I can’t function when it is hot and humid. Typical New England weather. Oh you would not even want to be around me. I put a new meaning to cranky. Calories, yikes I love mocha lattes from Starbucks. Could use one right now. Nothing bugging me today, how unusual. Don’t mind paying bills on line, so much easier. Think winter and all of the cozy socks you’ll have. Dragonflies are not my thing. Waiting for sneak up, that will really put me in a great mood. Hugs

  24. Eww. They freak me out too. Since it’s so hot here… the bugs have decided to come inside and enjoy my AC too. I don’t enjoy that. I guess you could say it “bugs” me. ha ha

What bugs me besides the bugs coming in? 3 year olds. Well, just mine. 😉 Meal time is SUCH a chore. She lived through another lunch and is lucky Daddy came home for lunch and is putting her down for nap. Mama needs a break.

I’m going to play with my new Panda Cotton from you. 😉

  25. Hmmm…. it bugs me to be good. You know, save money, spend it on things like the *mortgage* instead of yarn, pay for home improvements instead of yarn, do housework instead of knit. I want to be bad all the time and it definitely bugs me to be good. Sometimes I *hate* being a grown up.

  26. I don’t really get the dragonfly thing, either. I guess in the big world of bugs their pretty wings and variety of colors makes them a lot less repulsive than other bugs.

I am with you on the heat! I long to go outside, but it takes only one look at my crispy-fried flowers and garden to keep me inside. And I’d like to say I hate paying the bills, but I only pay the few that are related to my company; Hubby pays the many, many household bills!

You know what bugs me? The fact that summer is half over and I haven’t really gotten any of my big summer cleaning/organizing/home improvement projects done.

  27. Bill paying is enough to do it for me…

What bugs me? Pesky real-life intruding onto my knitting time. 😉

  28. You may not want to add the calories, but have you tried a White Chocolate Peppermint Mocha? It’s not on the menu, but they’ll make it for you. An employee turned me on to them. Mmmmmm.

  29. I love the way that dragonflies have such vibrant colors (most of them anyway). PLUS they’re just a summer bug…gone in winter.

what bugs me today are two things:

    1) just back from a wonderful week at Moosehead Lake where we saw tons of dragonflies (as well as moose, deer, bald eagles, ospreys, foxes, rabbits, loons) and I’m back at WORK!

    2) i forgot to take Loopy with me to Moosehead and so I have no pictures of the wee lad on the lake.

I’ll just have to go back I guess!

  30. I think unpacking boxes of yarn and repacking boxes of yarn would burn way more than 300 calories… go have a PM if you want! I would help you by buying (yet more) yarn, but I am happily knitting up the seawool I got on Saturday. Sock one was started and finished yesterday and sock two is well under way today. I love this stuff!

  31. Dragonflies have lovely shapes and colors for rubber stamping projects..goes in the same category as butterflies…though up close and personal they look just like ‘nother buttugly bug to me….oooh, did I say that? Anyhoo, as previously mentioned, they come in the category of good guys but did you know that dragonflies date way way back and there have been fossils found of dragonflies from the Permean Period that had a wing span of about 28 inches. Combine that with the fact that dragonflies are the fastest insect in the world…up to 38 mph….NOW how’d you like to find a critter like that in your backyard!

  32. first, i love dragon flies because they don’t bite and i think they are pretty. second, oh my gosh, i can’t wait to see the new yarns. third, what is bugging me today is that i love to eat fun and good stuff, but not stuff that is good for me. due to this small personality flaw, i have gained weight. my own fault, but darn it, why can’t they make vegetables that taste like ice cream, peanut butter, or chocolate? thanks for letting me get that off my chest. can’t wait to see the sock club goodies! Yipee!!

  33. Dragonflies eat mosquito and other insect larvae. No larvae, no mosquitoes. No mosquitoes, no itchy bites or West Nile virus or malaria. They earn a place on the list of Top 10 highly useful, if incredibly creepy, things!!! Snakes and spiders also belong to this list.

  34. Temps of 100 with a heat index ARE hot….but speaking from the Northwest where few residences have A/C–people WITH A/C are not allowed to whine TOO much when it gets that hot 😉 Climate change has affected the NW so much that I now think of summer as the season with the constant roaring of fans in the house, being sweaty when I’m home, and trying to figure out how to fix meals without any cooking (any appliance–and that now includes the BBQ because I’m in a condo and it’s too close to the door that generates heat–is forbidden).

On the PM, maybe that’s your treat for the day. I did go to the Starbucks site though and “play” with the mochas. You could always drop to a Tall, go nonfat, ask for sugarfree chocolate, (or peppermint). Shoot….you *can* cut those calories in half with some combination of changes in the Tall size range. I’ve recently gotten in the habit of having my morning latte as a double tall because then I get all the caffeine of a grande, but not all the milk that comes with it (and I have to drink soy and there’s no NF version of soy–wah!).

Buggin’ me today: still almost a week before I finally, FINALLY find out what happens in Potterland with all the other overgrown 10-year-olds following the series LOL

  35. lol, I don’t get the draginfly thing either. And I am with you on the screaming Sheri – I can’t stand anything buzzing round my face, gives me the major heebie jeebies (especially moths, the big furry ones – totally phobic!!).

And so sorry about the PM – a girlfriend of mine still hasn’t forgiven me for telling her that her fave takeout drink had 22 WW points in it (when her total for the day was 24!).

  36. Okay, here goes.

    1. The dragonfly/mosquito connection – I live in Florida, so thank God for the dragonfly. And, as previously mentioned by a very funny commenter, their butts are striped like socks. (Thank you for the grin today Ms. Violet!)

    2. Bill paying – I now pay 99% of my bills online. I used to HATE paying bills, but now it doesn’t bother me at all…well, other than the fact that the $$ is going out instead of coming in.

    3. The heat – As mentioned above, I live in FLORIDA!! Don’t even get me started. One thing that bugs me big time is my A/C bill in the summer. YIKES! And, of course, with summer comes the two most dreaded words in my universe — hurricane season.

Anywho, other than the fact that it is Monday and I’m chomping at the bit for the sneak-up, nothing much is bugging me today.

  37. Dragonflies:
    1. They’re irridescent. What in nature, other than an opal, is irredescent?
    2. They hover rather than blitz, stoop, or directly attack. They are God’s helicopters.
    3. They have such an interesting shape–again, kind of aircraft-like.
    4. I have never been bitten by one. I don’t think they even have mouths, do they?
    5. They have the word “dragon” in the name. I love the concept of dragons, although I’m glad there aren’t any really.

  38. In deep south Florida dragonflies are like little flying gods. There is nothing better then to be on the upper deck at the national park where I work overlooking Biscayne Bay early in the morning watching those little suckers fill their bellies with blood sucking mosquitos. I just wish they would eat the darn deer flies too.

  39. I love dragonflies, although if that picture is what all of the dragonflies look like where you live, I understand why they’d bug you. Out here (Mojave Desert of So. California) the dragonflies are a blue-ish purple shimmery color and don’t fly into people’s faces, they only buzz around plants and stay higher than eye-level for most people.

I hope tomorrow is a much better day.

  40. Why I like dragonflies: They’re an interesting shape, they’re shiny, and they eat unpleasant bugs. (Rather like why I like jumping spiders, except that jumping spiders aren’t shiny.)

    What’s bugging me today:

    1. Try as I might, I am unable to develop telepathy. This is a matter of some distress to my autistic son, who makes it vehemently clear that something is bugging *him* but is unable to tell me what.

    2. The scratches that are a result of #1 :-P.

    3. Arcane data practices of certain large online booksellers.

    4. For a change, we’ve had too much rain rather than too little. Which means too many mosquitoes outside, and flying roaches inside. Flying roaches are, admittedly, an interesting shape, but they are neither shiny nor consumers of more unpleasant bugs.

  41. It is 112 degrees out, which is cooler than it has been. Oh, sure, it’s a dry heat. but so’s the oven. ‘Nuff said.

As for Dragonflies? They’re creepy little buggers if you ask me.

  42. What’s buggin’ me. Waiting for the next sneak-up. LOL.

Seriously, we are looking for a new place to do our new venture. I hate looking and trying to figure out what the best place would be. I can never figure that out until after I am there and up and running.

Bills are always a pain, just the fact that you have to do them over and over again. They never seem to go away.

And last but not least, I do not like hot weather and am always happier when i have to work in winter clothes.

    I NEED MORE SOCK YARN..HELP

  43. When I was a kid towards the end of the summer the dragonflies would swarm and fill the sky! My brother and I called them “dining needles” – a kid’s way of saying “darning needle”, another name for a dragonfly. My brother and I referred to these days as “dining needle days” and looked forward to them every summer.

Now – that ginormous bug just creeps me out 🙂

PS – to your first commenter, Fleece Artist has a dragonfly colorway

  44. This week there has been a drought in my knitting and it’s bugging me like crazy! Nothing I look at (believe me I’ve been on Ravelry looking for a project that I absolutely-must-knit-this-very-instant) and while some are nice, nothing has jumped out at me. I also have quite a few things on the needles that are “long term” projects as I’m a slow knitter or the yarn doesn’t agree with what I’m trying to make it (take socks that really want to be a scarf) or it’s a knit that needs to be done by a certain time (Christmas) and just doesn’t want to get moving.

But thank God for air conditioning! 🙂

  45. I love dragonflies, in part because of their mythological meanings, and because I love their wings, and because they look like little flying jewels, and because they eat mosquitos.

  46. Dragonflies are beautiful! And they eat those pesky skeeters! Love, love, love them.

What’s bugging me? The lack of rain here in NW Ohio! And not being able to go to knitting nite at the LYS this evening. Both of those should be remedied tomorrow… And if that’s the worst thing happening to me, I’m a lucky, lucky person. 🙂

  47. I’ve always kind of like dragonflies. They are certainly better than some of the cockroaches I’ve seen in the past. And anything that eats mosquitos is a friend of mine!!! (Although I would also scream if one flew in my face…even if it was after a blood sucking mosquito!!!)

Not much bugging me today. Took my son to a 1:20 doctor appointment and was done by 1:30. WOW! I was expecting to be there an hour! Can’t beat that. I even think that I’ll be able to squeeze some knitting time in tonight. AND, if that’s not enought, I have the wonderful memory of 18 years ago today when my beautiful daughter was born. Yep. It’s been a great day.

  48. I have no inside info on dragonflies. I’m not a fan of them, but I don’t dislike them, either. My current buggy dislike is all the baby crickets that are sneaking into my house. The cats love them, though.

It’s been near 100 in my part of Colorado this week. I’m using the heat as my excuse to avoid bill paying (I don’t have central AC, just a little window unit). However, it’s not too hot to play on Ravelry!

  49. What’s currently eating me is the fact that most on-line yarn retailers do not accept paypal. Ah well.

I too dislike bill paying day. It feels stressful to me.

Can’t wait for the next sneak-up!
