Today we’re celebrating our Ninth Loopy-versary! We can hardly believe that it has been nine years. In August of 2006 we put the website online with a handful of yarn companies represented, and crossed our fingers and said a prayer that it would work.
It sure has been fun to share yarn, fabric, projects, ideas and inspiration with you over the past nine years. YOU ALL are our favorite part of The Loopy Ewe and we love being with you on this adventure. We look forward to many more years of sharing beautiful yarn, fabrics and ideas with you. There are always new things to see, do and share!
For today’s Monday Yarn Update, we have two new Loopy things to share, in celebration of our Loopy-versary.
1. Loopy’s Paintbox Sets – We know you love our Loopy Cake Sets, because we have a hard time keeping them in stock! We took the summer off from winding Loopy Cake Sets in order to focus on Loopy’s Paintbox Sets (available just for our anniversary, while supplies last). These sets come with 9 mini-balls of yarn. Each ball is approx. 50 yards (1/4 of a skein from our Loopy Solid Series yarn), so they are smaller than the balls you get in Loopy Cakes.
We have two different patterns that were designed with these sets in mind, and we’ll email you a copy of both patterns with purchase. The sets come in Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer colors. Shown below: Loopy’s Paintbox Scarf out of 1 1/2 sets of Autumn (shown as scarf, or kitchener the short ends to make an infinity cowl as shown in the last photo). You can also make the Paintbox Scarf/Cowl out of one set – I was just needing to hit the 600 yard mark for my July Camp project, so made it wider! And our SoundWave scarf by Debbie O’Neill, shown below in Winter and Summer colors. Each SoundWave scarf uses one set of Loopy’s Paintbox.
2. Loopy Pattern by Susan B. Anderson – Susan is the best toy-designer we know, and we’ve been working with her for a long time to design a special Loopy toy, just for you! We think it’s her cutest design ever (although we may be a little biased) and we’re excited to share it with you. We have the patterns available for sale now, and we will have kits available soon. The pattern takes one skein each of red and tan and 2 skeins of white in our Loopy Solids Series. We have been waiting on an order of white for oh-so-long, but expect it within the next couple of weeks. Please email us (support@theloopyewe.com) if you’d like us to save you a set of these three skeins to make Loopy. ($48 for just the yarn, or $53 for yarn plus pattern. The pattern is also available on its own.) We are all planning our own little Loopy knitting for the fall. We hope you have fun with him, too!
Loopy-versary Contest: We’re giving away NINE $25 Loopy Ewe Gift Certificates to celebrate our NINE years of being Loopy. (Well, some of us have been loopy a little longer than that, but we don’t count that part.) Leave a comment below and tell us what is the first project you remember knitting, crocheting, quilting or sewing, and we’ll draw the winners next week. The first thing I remember knitting was an ugly yellow sweater when I was in grade school or junior high. I just knit on the front and the back – I don’t remember sleeves, although I think it was supposed to have them ….

My first knitting project was a scarf that just kept growing & growing as binding off was yet to be learned.
My very first project was a scarf I knit for my best friend in middle school — it was all garter stitch with thick rows of green, white, and black. She loved it, but I totally cringe at what a novice I was!
Crocheted a pink hat – taught by a friend in sixth grade.
My first sewing project was an ambitious one. I was around 9 or 10, and I made matching dresses for my younger sister and me. They were early sixties style, with a fitted bodice (darts), gathered skirt, a long zipper up the back and a decorative ribbon just above the hem. Somehow I actually finished both of them while they still fit. And then I tackled knitting.
the first thing I ever crocheted was a triangular pot holder… I’m sure you can guess why it was triangular lol
My first project was a Barbie coat. It’s only fair to say it was actually just one of my first swatches i practiced on. It had holes in very appropriate spots for arms so I deemed it my barbies new coat! 🙂 My grandmother taught me and I’ve loved it ever since!
I began sewing when I was about 10 (50 years ago) and never stopped. I think the first “real” thing I have a picture of that I made was a brown/red jumper with big checks. I began crocheting in college and began with hats; knitting is a relatively new craft for me (only since about 2003) and of course, I began with the fun fur scarves! I have graduated to more sophisticated things, however.
My first project was an indian stitch afghan. I made multiples for an entire winter. My son still has one (35 years later)….gotta love that Red Heart!
I remember kniting a scarf with a lady from Ireland who took care of me while my mom went back to work. It was a red and black blend. I could do the knit stitch but the purl was my enemy and took me a lot longer to master, Wonder where that scarf is today
I tried to make my own shorts pattern. so sad, I really didn’t have the concept of 3 dimensional down too well! I did love the turquouise and green fabric though.
My first project was a ribbed scarf in a dusty green color. I still have that scarf and laugh when I look at it and see all of the mistakes. It still keeps me warm, though, when I need a utilitarian scarf that can go into the forest for foraging.
The very first thing I knit was a “Snoopy” sweater for my son from Mary Maxim in kit form (my age is showing!).
I knit a little scarf (my own pattern) that tied under my chin when I was 8 years old. One half on the right side of my head was red, and the lefthand side was christmas green. Coats and Clarks redheart yarn- Now that simply wasn’t enough for the designer in me, so I embroidered the intital “C” on the red half and the intial “I” on the green half to represent my name Christine Ivey….. and of course, I wore it to Christmas Eve services. My mother actually let me wear it as my head covering. I cringe at the thought of it, but smile that my mom let me parade down the church aisle for communion….
The first thing I sewed was a pot holder.
I learned to knit and crochet when I was 6 or 7 from my grandmothers. I remember just swatches for the knitting and a scarf from the crocheting. I can tell you sewing and quilting firsts, too, if you want, LOL!
First sewing project that I remember was an octopus pillow in grade school. Loved that thing! My first foray into knitting was when my now 11 yr old was a toddler. I was teaching myself and she would take my project off the needles and bring it to me to “help.” I decided I’d learn when she was a bit older (which I did 🙂 )
My first project was a cardigan with buttonholes up the front. I took a class from Sears, but had a friend at work show me how before I went to class (I was afraid I would be the slowest in class). It was green. I was in my 20’s.
I can remember knitting an afghan as one of my first projects, maybe not THE first. That was probably a scarf or doll blanket.
I remember learning to knit with my aunt, and I wanted to knit socks so that was the first thing I remember knitting.
A scarf of course. I was 8 and have it to my dad for Xmas. He was such a sweet man. He wore it everywhere and told them his daughter made it for him. That was many years ago and dad has been gone a few years. Thanks for reminding me of this memory.
For mg first project I knit a garter stitch scarf out of super bulky alpaca. I think I could have worn that thing in Siberia, it was so hot. It actually got stolen so it must not have been as ugly as I thought it was.
The first thing I remember was a sweater for my Mom as a Christmas gift. I was in college and had never made a project this big before. I couldn’t wait to give it to her on Christmas Eve and right after I wrapped it, I hurried down the stairs to give it to her. It was made out of a very chunky yarn and didn’t quite fit in the box. As I handed her the package it just kind of “exploded”, she’d didn’t have to unwrap it. 53 years later, I still have the sweater, it was willed to me when she passed away.
So excited for your 9th anniversary. Congrats! The first project I knitted was a cabled mug cozy. It was from a fuzzy yarn from the sale bin and every time I used it it made my sneeze n my coffee.
when I was 10 years old I kept making squares out of red heart yarn using rainbow colors. I was mesmerized by the variegated yarn.
When I was in Junior High I knit a striped scarf, which seemed to take forever to complete.
The first thing I remember knitting was a white scarf in my 2nd grade Brownie meetings. I still have the scarf!
My first project was a rectangular garter stitch shawl made out of Lion Brand Homespun.
The first thing I remember knitting is a never completed navy pullover for my first husband. I finished the back and one side. Then we got divorced (43 years ago) and I dragged the needles, completed pieces and a half knit sleeve around in my craft pile for years. When I started knitting again a about 10 years ago I got pretty serious about knitting and went through all my stuff and threw out that half knit sweater. Now all my half knit sweaters ( there are three) are for me, but I’ve completed lots of shawls, hats , gloves, scarfs for my family and friends.
The first project that I ever made was a scarf for one of my best friends. I had her pick out the yarn and I proceeded to knit in stockinette until there was no yarn left. What I didn’t know was that the yarn that was rolling wasn’t going to unroll itself lol!! She loved it anyway and calls it her snake scarf. That was 5 years ago. My skills have greatly improved since then. Too bad I didn’t discover blocking until after that project 🙂
The first project I remember knitting was my first 4-H project which was potholders. It was out of a bulky cotton yarn that was awful for a beginner to knit with especially in the summer when it was hot. Of course I was knitting close to the deadline to get it to the fair and my hands would get hot and sweaty. It was a very miserable first project but I persevered.
My grandmother taught me to knit and crochet when I was young, and my first knitting project was a garter stitch scarf that she helped me with. My first crochet project was a granny square afghan. My first quilting project was last summer at camp loopy and it was a wall hanging with little batik hearts. My first sewing project was in home ec and it was a smock top. 🙂
I remember my first crochet item being a scarf then a blanket. My first knit project was a scarf
The first thing I remember knitting is a red coin purse.
I am not sure what the name of it is but my first knitting project was a scarf that you fold in the middle and then sew up the length the length from the top of your head to your neck. I had that for years and can’t find it since we moved out west five years ago.
Hahaha….Portuguese Fisherman’s Knit sweater, blue (Takhi?) Candid Yarn. I was thought if I could do this, I could do anything. Y’know what? It came out pretty well, only to be followed by a few that didn’t come out so well.
That’s funny because the first thing I knitted was a yellow wool sweater too. My Aunt taught me to knit and she lived in Aekansas and I lived in St. Louis, MO I never finished it because I didn’t know how to bind off. I graduated from high school and left home. My Aunt came to visit while I was away and finished my sweater for me. My interest in knitting was renewed.
I remember knitting a seed stitch scarf with a gradient yarn, and at one point I decided that it was too narrow and needed more stitches. I was probably a foot or so in. My family was aghast when I frogged the entire thing and started over! LOL
Since I am only striving for “advanced” beginner and just over the last two years learned to knit, the first project I did were dishcloths. Then moved onto a scarf project. I was struggling with learning tension and the best way to hold the yarn. The scarf looked “loopy” LOL
Although my sister claims that my grandmother taught us to knit, the first project I remember was a royal blue mitten that I knit in a knitting class when I was around 10. Note that I remember one mitten; I don’t remember if I ever finished the pair!
My first real project was a baby afghan for my now 50 year old daughter. It was, I call it “butterfly pattern”. Turned out beautifully and she had it for years until “someone” washed it in the washer in hot water. After that she used it for her dolly.
The first thing I tried to knit from a pattern was a sweater vest for my boyfriend for Christmas. I didn’t finish it on time so I wrapped it up, needles and all. I eventually finished it but to my knowledge he never wore it. Can’t say I blame him. It was pretty ugly. 80’s fashions and colors were hideous.
I remember seeing a skirt in jr high. I failed miserably! To this day I do not sew by machine. I also remember a granny square afgan I crocheted around that time. Much fonder memories of that. Today, I am a Knitter. Happy Anniversary to Sheri and the Loopy Ewe! I have been a customer for most of those 9 years.
The first thing I remember knitting was cotton bandages to send to the leper colony on the island of Molokai. They were six inch wide strips of knitted white cotton.
I learned to knit at Brownies in the ’50’s. My mother was the troop leader and she thought all little girls should learn to knit. There were 8 of us in the 2nd grade troop and we all finished a triangular kerchief with ties to be worn on our heads. Mine was very lopsided pale yellow, but I wore it with pride to school. I was so proud of my accomplishment then & years later thanked my Mom for sharing her love of knitting with me.
The first thing I knit that wasn’t the rows of garter stitch was the Hot Head Hat from Stitch n Bitch.
Well, it’s a pretty boring answer, but the first project I knitted was the obligatory garter stitch scarf in a variegated purple yarn. I don’t think I’ve ever actually worn it, even though it did turn out pretty well.
My first completed project was a lopsided and uneven red scarf that ended up being a giant trapezoidal shape. Luckily for me, my friend thought it was interesting and awesome! 🙂
I was able to get my first project under my belt, a lot of k & p practice, and a confidence boost! And he got an avant garde scarf to wear around town, ha.
I made a garter scarf out of light blue acrylic for my nephew, Rowen. I was so proud. That was six years ago! My sister pulled out this scarf the other day and I was shocked to see that the project I felt so proud of was riddled with dropped stitches and actually quite small. Oh well!
Happy anniversary! My grandmother taught me to knit when I was ten years old…and I think my first project was Barbie clothes for my little sister. LOL…they were quite free form but she loved them. I am sixty four now and have been knitting ever since.
The first thing I remember knitting as a child was a little blanket for a small doll. I crocheted around the edges – it was red, white and blue. I still have it! And that was about 60 years ago.
