Frozen in Iowa and a CONTEST!

392I’m back from several days in Iowa, where it is COLD COLD COLD. I grew up in Iowa. I should know how cold it is there. But apparently, I had forgotten. Snow on the ground, gray skies, and windy freezing cold weather. I went to visit my mother-in-law for her birthday. I’m lucky to have a great mother-in-law. I know not everyone likes theirs, but I love mine! We had a great time shopping, eating out, enjoying coffee, and watching movies. If you’re ever near Clinton, Iowa, try 392 Caffe on Second Avenue. Awesome coffee and hot chocolate. (So good that we went two days in a row.) 392 is the temperature at which coffee beans start to roast.

IowaFrom there, I headed to Cedar Falls to visit my forever friends, Steve and Janice for a couple of days. All of you Spring Flingers know Janice and her daughter Kirstin (the cake ball maker), so I had them pose with Kirstin’s husband Alex so I could share it with you! Kirstin got married the weekend of our last Spring Fling (last April) and she and her hubby are expecting baby #1 this March. I made the baby hat and booties for her that I shared on last week’s blog. (Thanks for all of your sweater suggestions – so helpful!) Janice plans to be back for the Fall Fling this year, and I know you all will be glad to have her there again. I will, too!

Back to the cold – when I left the Des Moines airport yesterday, it was freezing and so windy. I was glad to be back to Denver, where it was a balmy 31. And happy to see my hubby, who held down the fort at home while I was gone.

photoIn my knitting bag: I’m test knitting an upcoming Giftables pattern, have socks to finish, need to get back to my Funky Grandpa sweater, and am ready to cast on something with The Verdant Gryphon’s Bugga. I haven’t decided on the pattern yet.

On my sewing table: Reds, teals and chocolates in Fat Quarters and one yard pieces, waiting to become a coffee cup wall hanging.

What does your knitting bag or sewing table look like? Leave a comment below and one of you will win this cute “Taste of Wollmeise” bag that I brought home from Germany with me last fall! Aren’t the mini skeins adorable? (This is not something we can get to sell here, but you can buy these from Claudia’s website in Germany.) Each little skein is 30 gr. and there are 12 skeins in the zippered pouch. I’ll be sending it off to one of you next week!

  1. I recently completed a huge and heavy blanket that has taken almost three years due to life getting bumpy (4′ x 6′ in size, 3 strands of worsted held together). It feels very satisfying to have it done especially given the below zero temperatures in Vermont. Now I am almost done with a felted bag out of Cascade 220 (Citron and Brown stripes) that will be given to a friend and then I am looking for a new project. I feel like doing another felted project but who knows where my stash will lead me!

  2. Oh My! My knitting bag is more like a knitting explosion! Currently on the needles: A Spectra scarf for my daughter, fingerless mittens for my niece to finish before she leaves for Czechoslovakia in 8 days, a winter scarf for my son that is on hold because I ran out of yarn and am waiting for more yarn to arrive, and a stash-busting hat. Whew! Too much fun!

  3. My knitting bag is normally a small WIP bag, but in that I always have a small skein of perle thread (in case I need a lifeline) and a locking stitch marker.
However the coffee table in front to me is littered with knitting and sewing items! Everything from pincushions, threads, embroidery cottons and needle cases, to knitting magazines, skeins of sock yarn (to pet and to try and match to projects) and the ever present pattern-I-will-knit-next, or next, or next!
My DH rolls his eyes when her tries to find a place for his coffee (move round to my side and I have two hand spots for hot and cold drinks).

Unfortunately I will have to clear this collection later in preparation for a birthday party … but give me about a week and it will be back to that normal state of organised chaos 🙂

  4. My knitting bag plus spillover to the couch is a double knit hat in 3 colors ( white, brown and black to mimic natural sheep colors) with the yarn run through a cardboard round jig to try to keep ghe 3 yarns from tangling. Hubby says he wants it random but more white on the public side, so I will have some duplicate stitching to make it more random looking. This is the hardest thing I have ever knitted and I am only 2.5 inches into what I think will be 7.5 inches needed. I am aching to start knitting my first sweater with 2 more planned after that! Have to be an adult and finish this hat first! The jig is helping a lot, but still it is slow going. It doesn’ t help much when the gdog wanders by and snags her legs into one of my yarns! Okay, I guess I’ m done complaining. Back to work!

  5. I have knitting projects in bags tucked in nooks and crannies all over the house, so I’ll focus on my sewing table, which currently has two colors of Essex Linen and a pretty print on their way to becoming a Sew Sweetness Bye Bye Love bag.

  6. My knitting bag has my current project, along with a few small tins that hold stitch markers, a yarn cutter and other oddments, a chibi, a tape measure, and the pattern for my project on a magnetic board that marks the row I am on.

  7. My knitting bag tends to be filled with yarn. My endtable in the living room usually has my current projects -I just finished a hat for my son-in-law and I am now starting a cowl with Malabrigo Arroyo in Plomo.

  8. I have multiple knitting bags that have leftover yarn from finished projects. The current knitting bag that I am using has a newborn cardigan in progress (may end up as a newborn coat) for my great granddaughter’s baby.

  9. Currently my sewing table is full of fabrics to make project bags for my knitting! I am excited that you are carrying fabric!

  10. My bag is filled with Cascade 220 for hats and Boot Toppers…I was so excited to see Janice – I miss her blog…how exciting for Kristin……my knitter friend was in Fort Collins this weekend for a quick family visit and tried to get to the shop….but time just didn’t make it happen!

  11. I’m working on self striping socks and a shawl. I’m also stitching a new appliqué quilt project using some of the fun owl fabric I ordered from you!

  12. I have a mini bag with my scissors, stitch markers, stitch counter, needles, etc., then bags for individual projects, which current include a honey cowl in progress, and a hat, to be started. Out of the bag is another cowl half finished and due for a birthday at the end of the month.

  13. My knitting bag is full of notions that I think I might need while I visit my daughter and family for the week. I am finally figuring out the Akimbo (Stephen West designer) shawl border that is on my needles. Hurrah!

  14. My knitting bag contains a pair of worsted weight winter socks for my dad in black with red cuffs, heels and toes and a small piece of drift wood from my last trip to the beach on Cape Cod to keep me dreaming of warm summer days!

  15. Which bag? There are so many. Today I am taking a twined knitting class so I’ll go with that bag-full of needles and yarn and a book of instruction to make slippers!

  16. Ooh, lots of comments!

Right now, my GoKnits bag from The Loopy Ewe has a “Vernal Equinox” shawl on the needles, and I am also designing and knitting a smaller lace shawl, though I am on the easy-peasy stockinette part of that shawl. And I’m trying to finish up my January Loopy Challenge, but it’s not turning out as I hoped, so we will see about that one. Might be headed for the Frog Pond.

  17. My bag is full of WIPs (work in progress) it seems I have a problem finishing things. If there is a hint of a problem or mistake…off it goes to “wait” . I have started a few Seahawks projects. ..mittens done – working on a scarf and a hat for my grandson. We are gearing up for a big SuperBowl party. GO SEAHAWKS!!!
Before I start thinking about spring and summer projects, I really need to finish all my projects that are waiting.

  18. My knitting table has an almost finished sock, newly started fair isle cardigan, caked up magic ball and lots of patterns scattered about!

  19. My knitting bag is actually the lovely tote I received from TLE as a gift with my last order of 2013! Currently there are two scarves and one pair of socks on their way to completion living in this tote, along with yarn, scissors, a pattern, pencil, stitch markers, and a counter or two, of course. Thank goodness TLE is so generous and sent such a large tote as a gift!

  20. My knitting bag contains patterns, unfinished projects, knitting help books, needles – and any other knitting item I can jam in!

  21. My knitting bags have crocheted heart garland parts, a scarf, swatching for sweater pants, monster parts, and a crocheted cowl in progress. My sewing table has a problematic square dance outfit. I’m a bit bigger than the pattern I want to make, and I’m having trouble with the sweetheart neckline.

  22. I have a knitting box filled with project bags, my notions pouch, and a spindle or two. Usually when going outside I’d just shove in my project bag inside my handbag, which is usually large.

  23. My knitting bag is full of the pieces of a vintage cabled baby bunting that I’m making in a beautiful charcoal grey for my second grandson that is due in February! And once that is finished, the bag will be full of fingering yarn that I will use to make socks and booties for the “boys”. But I have to say that I just love the comment that began with “Which bag? There are so many.” It brought a smile to my face and I could not have said it any better!

  24. My knitting bag is actually a whole knitting closet: I have so many unfinished projects: some are recent, some are really old, some need just a short time to finish (but I don’t know how, for example a wonderful beaded sweater that doesn’t go over my head if I follow the pattern directions,) some are very complicated (and I forgot what to do or I lost the pattern), some are just untouched yarn waiting for the creative spark. Anyway, why am I entering a contest to win more yarn?

  25. I am knitting a Fridmar Hat which is a classic Scandinavian hat. It is very warm and is knit in the round in one piece with the lining pushed up inside to create a double-lined cap. The yarn I am using is Istex Plotulopi, 100% wool, which I ordered from Iceland. It is very delicate and must be handled with care being careful not to pull the yarn too hard and break it. I thought it would be an interesting experience…and, my goodness, it is!

  26. My knitting bag is a Totes bag- metallic colors- silver, gold,bronze- with a few pockets inside. It was a going away gift from a gal in my old knitting group. It’s big enough to hold a couple of projects or 3 smaller ones. I usually have two in there. Plus pattern, notion bag, Nook, etc. I like it.

  27. A sweater to recast off the too-loose cast off. Dr. Seuss print flannel to make a robe for my son. A Zoom Loom to play with (coasters for V-Day?, or in reality Mother’s Day for mom?). And some raspberry colored fingering heading to be a shawl…..for me!

  28. I crochet a fishing game for the granddaughter. Many fish, seahorse, crab, dolphin, starfish and seashells. It`s for her 3. birthday in two days.

  29. I just finished a rainbow colored scarf so my knitting bag is thinned down to one project – a dark, inky, blue-black cardigan.

  30. Knitting BAG??? Singular???? Oh, you are a funny one! A mess. I have about 4 different bags (I’d have 5 but I left one at a family member’s house). Sewing is all over my desk–a sewing machine, a serger, various supplies and some florescent yellow fabric that I can’t exactly remember what I was going to make with but I know it was something really good.

  31. My knitting bag is currently filled with 3 smaller project bags with several projects. This is so unusual since I am typically a monogamous knitter.

  32. Iowa cold? Michigan’s giving it a run for its money this year. My knitting bag has only one project in it at present: a half-finished Celia’s Blankie I’m working on–a Cottage Creations pattern. I like to have one other project going at the same time–I’ve just finished some tube socks and now I’m going to knit an Aviatrix Hat for my grandson.

  33. I have a scarf I’m making for my secretary out of Noro yarn. There is some cables and lace work in it. It’s varigated with grays, blues, teals. In my other bag, i have an almost finished pullover with an Irish Setter in the middle.

  34. My knitting bag has a hat that is about 1/3 done, various sock yarn leftovers, the yarn basket have multiple yarns and patterns in waiting!!!

  35. I have multiple knitting bags, too, each containing at least two projects: one easy one (usually socks) and one complicated (currently colorwork mittens with charts). I decide which kind of projects I feel like working on that day and grab that one. I have a sweater in progress in my Loopy Ewe see-through tote, also, which I grab when I know I’ll be in a meeting. Knitting plain stockinette is so much faster when I’m in meetings listening to other people.

  36. My knitting bag is full of Dyakcraft needles and Cephalopod Yarns Bugga. I’m currently working on a pair of Ysolda Teague’s Isidora mittens. Would be awesome to knit with some Wollmeise!

  37. My knitting bag has knitting bags, as I have different projects for different activities. The lace shawl I work on at the end of the day when everyone else is in bed, does not go to my daughter’s gymnastic meets. Active WIPS include the Owls sweater, Serpentine Socks, Citron Shawl, Follow Your Arrow Shawl, and a Brickless.

  38. My knitting bag has a beaded hat that’s about half done. And a pair of hand warmers which I wish were done because it’s going below zero again tomorrow.

  39. In my active knitting bag are a Moderne Log Cabin blanket for my niece’s second baby (due in May, so in theory I have plenty of time), a pair of socks for me, and a pair of socks for my mother, who at age 97 has stopped knitting.

  40. I have several knitting bags and it depends on my mood and the amount of activity in the house which one I select. I’m working on a Gold Coast Shawl-Collar Cardigan in Tahki Kismet, a cowl and some fingerless gloves. I also have a vertical vest that I knit in Noro that needs to be completed.

  41. I have several knitting bags (I don’t count them anymore)!!! In the one next to my recliner where I knit most often–a finished cowl waiting to be blocked, another bag full of mini skeins and the makings for hexipuffs for the Beekeepers Quilt, pieces of a love able “monster” that need to be stuffed and assembled, a shawl, scarf and headband all in progress, various uncaked skeins of yummy yarn and various tools of the trade! It’s full!!

  42. As I remember it, my sewing table is an overgrown thrift shop purchase, brown in color. I can pretty much still see the drawers on the front and my sewing machine is peeking out of the Mound of Stuff stacked around it. I know it must be there somewhere unless all that Stuff has magically learned to hand by itself in thin air. It really is time to Do Something About That Mess!

  43. My knitting bag FINALLY has some room in it because I FINALLY finished several Christmas gifts (that had been started two and three Christmases ago). Right now I have a lacy scarf on the needles that progresses at a rate of 1 cm every few hours (a true test of my Buddha nature…) and a bamboo/cotton blend that I’m making into a tank top for summer. Also just started a pair of mitts in some luscious Manos del Uruguay yarn.

  44. My sewing table is the dining room table, full of stuff that I’m making for my new granddaughter! And my knitting bag is full of baby stuff I’m making for my new granddaughter! Plus a pair of mittens – I live in upstate NY – need I say more???
