Whirlwind Day and a CONTEST!

Do you ever feel like you stepped onto an out-of-control merry-go-round? (Or yarn winder, if one were able to sit on a yarn winder….) That’s what this week has felt like. Busy, busy, busy. Maybe I just need to sit and chill and knit for awhile tonight. I’ve been working on my Cabled Rib Wrap and not working on my Charleston Tea (although I need to). I’m also ready to get another scarf on the loom. The purple one from last week is done. I’ll show it to you as soon as I wash and block it. I had fun working on it!

It’s time for our October Blog Contest, and I thought it would be fun to give away a skein from our newest indie dyer. I’m happy to say that we’re adding Fibernymph Dye Works to the shop. We’ll have Lisa’s beautiful semi-solids, striping yarns, and also her awesome roving. This line will be going up soon, but you have a chance to win a skein before it goes up! Leave a comment below and we’ll draw a winner next week. You can pick the color you’d like, from these five pictured. (Left to Right: Brigid’s Cloak, Autumn Harvest, Nothing But Blue Skies, Elphaba’s Corset, and An Air of Elsewhere.) The October Blog Question is: Do you have any other needle arts hobbies besides knitting? (Spinning? Weaving? Quilting?ย Counted Cross Stitch? Needlepoint? Rug Hooking?) To enter the drawing, leave your answer in the comments below. We’ll email you if we draw your name next week.

  1. Other than knitting, I crochet. I don’t do it often because it makes my hand cramp. But I have been crocheting since I was 11 yrs old. That was a loooong time ago. I’d love to learn to spin some day though.

  3. My first needlework was embroidery and cross stitch taught by my grandmothers. A friend in college taught me to knit. I also crochet. I learned to spin after my daughters were in 4-H with sheep projects and I kept the sheep and their fleeces. I’ve done a little weaving. My most recent
needle art is rug hooking — almost finished with my third rug. An Air of Elsewhere is gorgeous.

  4. I have tried many needle arts over the years (needlepoint, cross stitch, crochet, latch hook), but I always come back to knitting. The one thing I would like to try is weaving, maybe I could make a dent in my stash. ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. I used to crochet quite a bit, but have not done so for many years. Periodically I try to teach myself to spin using a spindle. I really do want to get better at it, and know that I need to practice, but find myself choosing to knit in spare moments instead.

  6. When I was a teenager, the thing to do was crewel embroidery and I spent a lot of time decorating my cutoffs with it. I do crochet sometimes to make stuffed squeaky dog toys or once to make a cotton liner inside a newly knitted wool hat I could not stand against my skin! I have yearned to try quilting, but I fear my sewing machine is on its last legs. I have tried Counted Cross Stitch, but it does not appeal so very much. Knitting socks is my new favorite hobby.

  7. Back in the days when I had more free time, I enjoyed doing cross-stitch and needlepoint, even the very fine gauge stitching on linen. Now I can’t see as well, time is limited, and i consider it a good day if I get some sock-knitting done. I still dream, however, about learning to spin.

  8. I do love to spin and have spun Fibernyph’s roving. Now, to knit what I have spun is the next challenge. One does not need to knit in order to love spinning. Thank goodness! I do knit though.

  9. I used to do cross stitch a lot, and I want to learn to crochet, but there just never seems to be enough time in the day to do it all! ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. Late comer, but to answer your question – YES! I started as a crocheter, then branched into counted cross-stitch and needlepoint. At some point I added in latch-hooking, and a handful of years ago tried my hand at a weird type of rug hooking I bought as a kit. It’s still sitting unfinished on a shelf in my basement. I tried knitting back several years ago when we were preparing to move, and I had packed up all my crocheting. I found I just needed to do something with yarn, and bought a little learn to knit kit and taught myself.

  11. I’ve done cross stitch for over 30 years and have many beautiful projects to show for it. I bought a sewing machine and serger about 10 years ago, and have been trying to learn to sew. But I find reading patterns difficult, and there’s so much to know that it can be very frustrating and discouraging at times. I also tried my hand at jewelry making. I bought a ton of supplies, but never got very good at it. I still make a few things now and again, mostly out of guilt for having such a huge stash. I tried paper crafts, like making cards and gift tags, for a short while, but found it too boring. In 2009 I learned to knit. I’ve become fairly obsessed, and enjoy knitting immensely. I have met many wonderful knitters at classes and through my knitting guild. I still have a lot to learn, but I’m having a blast.

  12. i crochet and i am learning how to spin. i would love to learn to weave as well. i have done latch hook. i have also attempted to do cross stitch but couldn’t get the hang of it.

  13. I do some cross stitch and sewing but since I’ve taken up knitting I’ve slowed down on those projects. There just enough time in the day for everything ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. Besides knitting I am learning how to spin yarn and braid rugs. I hook rugs, sew and do cross stitch too. I haven’t met a needle art that I don’t like.

  15. Yes, I Cross Stitch. Although I have not done it in a few years, I used to be religious about it. It was very relaxing and I enjoyed the quick results. I gave it up as my hands are not as good as they used to be with the finer needles. I so enjoy knitting, it’s relaxing and soothing to me. I can spend an entire day knitting away, although I don’t get to much time to do that, I try to make at least two weekend’s a month. Knitting is my ultimate pleasure and enjoyment!! This yarn is gorgeous! I would love to know the base. Thank you for your offer!!

  16. I dabble at spinning and I sew a lot. I used to cross stitch and now I can’t do that so much any longer because of my eyes….

  17. Thanks for the contest! I have been known to to do the following: crewel, needlepoint, quilting, and cross stitch. Knitting is my favorite!

  18. Great thing Lisa will be supplying yarn to Loopy Ewe. I ask you to bring in many self striping yarns. I will buy them all. Especially the self striping which have many colors.

  19. I used to do needlepoint, but not so much anymore. Mostly I just knit these days…when I can find the time! ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. Mostly I knit and crochet, but I also do some cross stitch on occasion. Learning to quilt and spin are on the top of my to do list.

  21. HI: I have lots of other needle hobbies.
Oh gosh, sewing clothes, quilting, needlepoint, cross stitch. OH I could go on I bet I have done or do just about everything that uses some sort of needle. But at the moment I am in a knitting frenzy and can’t seem to get enough. I love the yarns you have up for grabs and I hope you pick me to win Bridget’s cloak. I know I can give her a great home.

    thanks

    cathy

  22. I have in the past quilted and done counted cross-stitch. Although I enjoyed both, neither brought me the absolute, goofy-grinned bliss that knitting has. Can’t imagine going back to either now.

  23. Knitting is more than enough for me right now but I just learned now to needlefelt at my knitting guild and it actually was fun. I might try felting some flowers to put on a hat next!

  24. I knit, spin, crochet, and embroider, and I technically know how to sew, weave, and felt, but I don’t do those often enough to say I can do them!!

  25. I used to quilt more but knitting is much more portable. I love the names of the yarns in the pictures above. Very clever.

  26. I’ve been knitting lately but I also crochet. I have projects I have started in embroidery, counted cross-stitch, needlepoint and have recently started spinning with a drop spindle.

  27. Crocheting is what I learned first and is my fallback. Next is quilting, we do the most of that since Mom and I have a longarm. I try to knit often. Used to sew a lot of my clothes, but now only sew Halloween Costumes! I love Elphaba’s Corset colorway in this yarn!

  28. I used to do counted cross stitch, and lately I have really felt like getting into it again! I think it would be a good project to pull out after all the holiday knitting is done ๐Ÿ™‚

  29. In addition to knitting? Spinning, please! and somewhere on the horizon weaving is impending, I suspect (doing my best NOT to say it’s looming …) – very glad to hear that you’ll have Fibernymph roving to play with as well as the yarns.

  30. Right now I’m pretty much all knitting, all the time. Some years ago I did some crochet and counted cross stich.

I haven’t done any weaving in quite a few years but I continue to think of myself as a weaver. I still have my looms and would never be without a subscription to Handwoven magazine.

  31. I also do needlepointing. I knit socks almost exclusively — I needlepoint Christmas ornaments almost exclusively.

  32. Beyond knitting I also spin. And I cook, and travel, and read, and dance, and do beadwork, and …. Yeah, too much information…

  33. I just recently learned to knit, but also crochet and cross stitch. I used to love to sew and made many items for me and my children when they were small. Now since I have learned to knit I absolutely love it even though just still a beginner.

  34. Knitting is the only one for me. I don’t have enough time to knit nearly as much as I’d like, so I don’t really want to get into any others. But I suppose picking up a little crochet at some point is inevitable for some finishing work and borders and such.

  35. I have dabbled with spinning and once did very basic weaving, but I have a substantial quilting and x-stitch stash that together almost matches my yarn stash. I guess that is to be expected when my aunt used to own a x stitch store and my mom worked as a seamstress. ๐Ÿ™‚
