That’s a pretty good combination, isn’t it? First the cashmere show and tell. Elf Roberta knit up this beautiful scarf for her sister-in-law out of Sweet Georgia’s CashSilk Lace in the Summer Skin color. The pattern is Felicia’s CashSilk Fern Lace Scarf, which is free on Ravelry. It uses just one skein. I can tell you, it turns into a beautiful, lightweight luxurious scarf. I think that pattern would also look beautiful done up in fingering weight yarn – something like Madelinetosh Sock or Three Irish Glenhaven Cashmerino Fingering.
We tried a new dessert recipe at our house last week. It’s similar to this one (in a rather anemic looking photo) that I’ve shared with you before, but with the addition of peanut butter. YUM.
1 brownie mix (for 9 x 13 pan) + eggs, oil, water
1 large containter Cool Whip
2 large boxes of instant chocolate pudding
(prepare each box as directed, as you assemble)
1 bag of peanut butter cups, chopped
3/4 cup of smooth peanut butter
1 (8 oz) pck. cream cheese
3/4 cup powdered sugar
Bake the brownies as directed and let cool. When cool, cute them into bite-sized pieces.
Put the cream cheese in a mixing bowl and add the peanut butter and powdered sugar. Beat until well mixed and smooth. Fold in 1 cup of Cool whip.
Assemble the layers:
1/2 of the brownies
1 box of the pudding prepared as directed and not yet set
1 cup of chopped peanut butter cups
peanut butter/cream cheese/Cool Whip mixture (use the whole thing on this layer)
1/2 of the brownies
1 box of the pudding prepared as directed and not yet set
Frost with the rest of the plain Cool Whip
Top with remaining chopped peanut butter cups
Let set for a few hours (or overnight) and enjoy.
It was fun to read all of your comments on last Friday’s blog post. We’re so glad to have you all here with us on our Sixth Anniversary! I used the Random Number Generator to pick a winner from last week’s comments. The skein of Wollmeise Lace goes to Kimberly in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Congratulations, Kim!
We have another contest this week (since it’s our anniversary month, you know). This week’s question: What’s the best book you’ve read or movie you’ve seen this summer? (I’m looking to add to my book and movie lineup as we move into the fall.) Since this is our second contest of the month, we’ll be giving away two prizes – two of our Sixth Anniversary Kits, which will be making their debut next week. Leave your answers in the comments below and we’ll draw the winners next week!

I read “The Expats” by Chris Pavone and couldn’t put it down!
Man, my favorite book I have read so far this year is The Beekeeper’s Apprentice. With all the Sherlock fervor, this was one that really struck me. I would have complained that it was a fanfic with a Mary Sue but, well, it’s pretty well written for a fanfic and the Mary Sue was an intriguing character. š
I read the first book of The Hunger Games trilogy, which was excellent. Another good book “The Ladies Man” by one of my favorite Irish writers.
My favorite book this summer is”The game of Thrones” As for movie “The Hunger Games”. I also read all three books and enjoyed them.
Oh, dear. Choices Choices. For book I’d have to say the Blackout/All Clear duology by Connie Willis. I don’t really watch movies, but do listen to a lot of audiobooks. There I’d like to recommend the Sharing Knife quartet or the Curse of Chalion series by Lois McMaster Bujold.
Favorite book or movie? Oh, my! I have to confess that I have not read anything this summer except the newspaper, a few blogs, and a bunch of knitting patterns. The only movie I have seen is “The Music Man” (not exactly new!) which I listened to in the car while the grandkids watched and were quiet–I also sang a bit, just love the score. My time has been spent with grandkids visiting, knitting for Camp Loopy, and laying quietly in bed for 3 weeks with the shingles. I still have periods of intense pain. The best advice I have for anyone is that when they turn 60 get the shingles shot!
The best movie I’ve seen this summer is The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
The best movie I“ve seen this summer is my all-time favourite, which I“ve seen well over 20 times. And now once more!!!
Princess Bride
ItĀ“s a wonderful and funny movie š
Read? Who has time to read when we have all this knitting to do š
The best audiobook I’ve “read” so far this summer is “A Discovery of Witches” by Deborah Harkness. I’m still in the midst of listening to it, but so far it’s pretty good. I’ve heard it described as paranormal romance *shutter* but it’s much more intelligent and literary than that.
The best book I have read this summer is “The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry”, a humorous yet serious look at relationships, growing older, and choices we make in our lives.
The Help. I read the book and then watched the movie last week. As always, the book was better than the movie. It was a great book!
I haven’t finished it yet because I would rather knit than read, but the best book I’ve started this summer is called The Tiger’s Wife.
Best movie of the summer – The Avengers, fun with superheroes. Best book Faithful Place by Tana French, who writes well enough that I almost don’t mind the plot faults.
Hm, let me see, there was no movie in particular but there were plenty of books. I had to replace my beloved old Kindle with a shiny new one and in the process I discovered many lost treasures since I had to sort everything into collections again.
A book that really, in a way, haunted me was The Light Between Oceans by ML Stedman.
Movie: Brave
Book: The Age of Miracles, Karen Thompson Walker (1/2way through now & can’t wait to see what happens!), The Fault in our Stars (my 13yo daughter insisted I read it, poignant), Calling Invisible Women (a quick, and for this mom, all-too-believable story).
It is hard to read & knit simultaneously. & I love to read, not listen. + I read for work (I’m an editor), so I choose my books carefully! So little time, so many books! & yarn!
I cannot just pick one! I loved the Night Circus, a beautiful romantic fiction novel; and Wild, a story about a young woman trying to put her life back together, who heads off to hike the 1100 mile Pacific Crest Trail without having a clue as to what she is doing. I’m looking forward to reading through the comments, reading time is so precious I hate to waste time on a book that is not worthwhile.
So much knitting that only books read were the Hunger Games Trilogy.
Well, I had a baby in May, so movies are pretty much nonexistent for me right now. But, the best book I’ve read this summer is “The Secret Life of Bees”. Poignant, cheerful, and heartbreaking, all at the same time.
I sure like the Help – -made me laugh and cry!!
Not a movie, but three seasons of Masterpiece Mystery’s Inspector Lewis on Netflix. I love those guys!
I loved the New Batman movie.
Hunger Games…reading the series with my daughter this summer and really enjoying it!
I would like to say that Magic Mike was my favorite, but it really wasn’t a good movie. Hunger Games was the best I’ve seen so far this summer. I really haven’t had much time to do any recreational reading though.
since movies are ridiculously expensive! the most recent book would be the Hunger games good books!
Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Wallis. Based on her grandmother who must have been quite a character.
Shoemaker’s Wife about Italian immigrants.
Enjoyed them both.
Well since I have two toddlers we dont get much movie time, but I am reading 50 Shades of Grey. It’s not the best book I’ve ever read but its what I’m reading.
I loved Brave. Rich colors, depth of field and awesome story.
The best book this summer is “Remembering Isaac: The Wise and Joyful Potter of Niederbipp.” I throw pottery, so it struck a chord with me. It’s about a young man, just graduating from college who is a passionate potter. He becomes the newest potter in a 300 year old town in PA. The book is his sketch book, so it has lots of pictures as well as a self-propelled movie of throwing a bowl. I connected with the young man and his passion for throwing.
My favorite movie is The Avengers. I loved the characters!
I would recommend the book the Help and I really like the movie as well :).
I’m in the middle of reading the Dragon Tattoo trilogy (just started book 3) and am really enjoying those.
The very best book AND movie I’ve read/seen recently is THE HELP. What started out as a small project to expose the lives of rich Southern women and their ‘help’ turned into a book for a young woman journalist. The movie followed the book almost exactly. Perfect summer reading!
I’ve been reading the Game of Thrones books – they’re so long and there are so many of them that those are pretty much the only books I’ve read this summer! As for movies, I’m on the Dark Knight Rises bandwagon. The movie was great, and I love the soundtrack!
Since I havent’ done any reading yet this summer, the best movie I did see was TED!!! I was laughing so hard, i snorted & cried!! lol š
Happy Knitting xo
Just finished reading A Game of Thrones, the first in the series by George R.R. Martin. Fantastic writing and an exciting story made this large volume fly by! Very hard to put it down in order to get some knitting done.
I’ve seen 2 really good movies so far this summer – 1. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (how could it miss with those 2 great “Dames”, Judi Dench and Maggie Smith?) and 2. Moonrise Kingdom.
For books it would be Hugh Brewster’s “Gilded Lives, Fatal Voyage; Daphne Kalotay’s “Russian Winter” and I just re-read Kate Mosse’s “Labyrinth. I’m about to start Jo Nesbo’s “The Snowman” and I’m impatiently waiting for the December release of Preston/Douglas’s next novel in the Pendergast series – “Two Graves” (just planning ahead).
The best book I’ve read this summer is The Night Circus. It is such a good book and I’ve heard they will be making it into a movie.
I really enjoyed Late Nights on Air by Elizabeth Hay.
I can tell you what NOT to read. Do not read 50 shades of grey. Terrible. Awful.
The best book I read this summer is A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore… irreverent and hilarious! It’s even better in audio book form… read by Fisher Stevens!
I re-read To Kill A Mockingbird this summer. I never tire of the classics. š
I just finished a marathon read of the A Song of Ice and Fire (all 5 books) and I thought The Avengers was awesome but so was The Dark Knight Rises.
Reading A Song of Ice and Fire! Wonderful read!
So far I’ve enjoyed seeing the Batman movie.
We liked Jack Black in Bernie.
Thanks for the contest!
The Midwife of Venice and Divergent were two excellent books!
Jumping up and down here. Pick me! Pick me!
š
Every summer since 11th grade I’ve made it a point to read the Great Gatsby. It’s one of my all time favorites. I’m a huge sucker for that entire era.
Moonrise Kingdom came out this summer and it is a great movie, funny and quirky. I would suggest the Song of Ice and Fire series by R.R. Martin, really good.
Since movies are outrageous in price. the Hunger Games books are great!
I loved “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”. Funny and touching; ultimately uplifting. When I grow up I want to be Judi Dench!
