That’s a pretty good combination, isn’t it? First the cashmere show and tell. Elf Roberta knit up this beautiful scarf for her sister-in-law out of Sweet Georgia’s CashSilk Lace in the Summer Skin color. The pattern is Felicia’s CashSilk Fern Lace Scarf, which is free on Ravelry. It uses just one skein. I can tell you, it turns into a beautiful, lightweight luxurious scarf. I think that pattern would also look beautiful done up in fingering weight yarn – something like Madelinetosh Sock or Three Irish Glenhaven Cashmerino Fingering.
We tried a new dessert recipe at our house last week. It’s similar to this one (in a rather anemic looking photo) that I’ve shared with you before, but with the addition of peanut butter. YUM.
1 brownie mix (for 9 x 13 pan) + eggs, oil, water
1 large containter Cool Whip
2 large boxes of instant chocolate pudding
(prepare each box as directed, as you assemble)
1 bag of peanut butter cups, chopped
3/4 cup of smooth peanut butter
1 (8 oz) pck. cream cheese
3/4 cup powdered sugar
Bake the brownies as directed and let cool. When cool, cute them into bite-sized pieces.
Put the cream cheese in a mixing bowl and add the peanut butter and powdered sugar. Beat until well mixed and smooth. Fold in 1 cup of Cool whip.
Assemble the layers:
1/2 of the brownies
1 box of the pudding prepared as directed and not yet set
1 cup of chopped peanut butter cups
peanut butter/cream cheese/Cool Whip mixture (use the whole thing on this layer)
1/2 of the brownies
1 box of the pudding prepared as directed and not yet set
Frost with the rest of the plain Cool Whip
Top with remaining chopped peanut butter cups
Let set for a few hours (or overnight) and enjoy.
It was fun to read all of your comments on last Friday’s blog post. We’re so glad to have you all here with us on our Sixth Anniversary! I used the Random Number Generator to pick a winner from last week’s comments. The skein of Wollmeise Lace goes to Kimberly in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Congratulations, Kim!
We have another contest this week (since it’s our anniversary month, you know). This week’s question: What’s the best book you’ve read or movie you’ve seen this summer? (I’m looking to add to my book and movie lineup as we move into the fall.) Since this is our second contest of the month, we’ll be giving away two prizes – two of our Sixth Anniversary Kits, which will be making their debut next week. Leave your answers in the comments below and we’ll draw the winners next week!

I’ve been reading “War Brides” and really liked it. And the last movie I saw was “Mao’s Last Dancer”, it was great!
The best book I read was Mrs. Kennedy and me by Clint Hill who was thw Secret Service agent assigned to Mrs. Kennedy. Great read!
I haven’t read or seen anything new at all this summer. Must get out! I was hoping to see Batman, which my husband highly recommends.
How to be a women, by Caitlin Moran. I loved her witty humor and her view on feminism.

The best book I read has to be A Discovery of Witches and it’s sequel, Shadow of Night. I thought they were great adventure stories with a bit of sci-fi thrown in.
Thanks to a friend loving the series and finding out recently that my husband is distantly related to the author, I began reading (which means listening on Audible) to the Ender series by Orson Scott Card. Kind of dark and thought-provoking, but characters I found myself caring about. So far I’ve listened to the first two in the series, Ender’s Game and Speaker for the Dead. I’m about to start the third book, Xenocide. Not terribly cheery summer reading, but interesting.
I went to see the Most Exotic Marigold Hotel. It was a nice move. Reading of books – Oh my gosh! none this summer! Been too busy with Camp Loopy Projects and moving logistics! Gotta go! Although as I am a Dog person, I did read a few shot stories in Dog is My Co-Pilot from Bark magazine.
Wow, what a fountain of information. Have to go back thru and make notes. I finished the Hunger Games Triology and thought they were great. Looking forward to seeing the movies.
I love movies, and I go to the movie theater once a week, sometimes more. This summer I saw Spiderman three times, The Avengers three times, and many more. I started reading The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon, I finished the first book and started on the second one this summer. Oh I also read all three Fifty Shades books.
1776 has got o be one of my favorite movies. As for books, I think I liked The warmaid’s choice by David Weber.
I don’t get out anymore. Haven’t been to a movie theater all summer. Closest I can get to a movie is the Midsomer Murders we’ve been streaming off netflix ir getting on dvd from them. I’ve wanted to see lots of movies but can’t get out to any yet this summer. Books I also have ‘t had time for except that I have been listening to “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” on cd from my library and it’s so good I’m going to buy the book.
First You Try Everything by Jane McCafferty.
My favorite movie that I saw this summer (actually the only movie I saw in the movie theater) was Brave. This was my favorite because I got to take my two little nieces, Bella and Gabbie, age 8 and 5, to see it. We had a great time. As the mom of a boy child, it’s a sweet treat to go to a “girl princess” movie with little girls.
Okay, I have to admit, I devoured the “50 Shades of Gray” books…totally loved them. Now, I’m reading Stephen’ King’s “11/22/63” which is not his normal kind of writing. This is a time travel book and how history can be changed revolving around JFK’s assassination.
Movies: Best Exotic Hotel was good. Just saw the new Meryl Streep “Hope Springs.” Really liked both.

Reading “Her Mother’s Hope” by Francine Rivers…….love her books! Check “The Scarlet Thread.” So good!
The best book I’ve read this summer would have to be The Spy Who Left Me by Gina Robinson. The book used a similar style of humor as seen in the Janet Evanovich books.
Loving Frank is the best book I have read this summer. It is fiction based on the life of Frank Lloyed Wright. Very interesting
I finally got around to seeing The Help, as well. It is a fabulous movie.
I loved the avengers!
books: read quite afew. reread the Twilght series and that wonderful Odd Thomas (Odd Apocalypse), but my fav was an oldie: True Grit by Charles Portis.
movies: saw more this summer than I have in a while. My fav is Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter (because I thought it would really be hokey, but it was great!). and I got caught up on that wonderful series “Downton Abbey”.
For books, I’ve almost finished reading “What Would Buffy Do?: The Vampire Slayer as Spiritual Guide” by Jana Riess – it’s extremely intelligent and a pleasure to read. My favourite summer movie has been Disney’s “Holes” (2003). Funny and weird. Great to see Jon Voight in a comedy role.
Movies… I liked Brave the best so far, it was a great way to spend some time with friends. As for books, I’m trying to get through the G.R.R. Martin series, and it’s eating into my bus knitting time!
I read Sister by Rosamund Lupton, a great mystery.
The Help was the best.
I read a book called Drunk, Divorced and Covered in Cat Hair. It’s a funny, bittersweet look at how a woman copes and learns to be who she is after her husband leaves. She takes up knitting as part of the learning process. The story hit home in ways that a lot of single again (whether widowed or divorced) women can identify with. I loved it!
The book and movie about ‘The Help’ was by far one of the greatest books and movies of all time. And dare I say, when someone decides to bring a chocolate pie to knit night, we get some hilarious rolls of laughter about it. Just to make sure it is the best darned pie we ever ate. Although the last time I brought one, I bought it from Oak Street Pie and Candy Company and did not do the baking myself. š
I am looking forward to Hope Springs with Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones.
But like many folks, I like the audio books so that I can knit and ‘read’ simultaneously. It works for me and for the hubby who drives while I knit and we both ‘read’ books while taking our drives around the countryside.
Movie- Avengers
Book – The Narnia series by C. S. Lewis
Read ‘The Help’. Would love to see the movie sometime…
The Sanctuary……an oldie but goodie!
I haven’t been to the movie theater in years but I did enjoy the made-for-TV movie, The McCoy and Hatfields, with Kevin Costner.
The best book, or series of books, that I have read this summer is the Inspector Sejer series, by Karin Fossum. The first one is “Don’t Look Back”. Great Scandinavian mystery series! My favorite movie this summer was “Hugo”. It’s out on DVD now, so you could watch it at home.
I am almost ashamed to say since it is not some fantastic literature but I thoroughly enjoyed the Fifty Shades of Grey books.
Shadow of Night, by Deborah Harkness, I think — although I’ve done lots of fun re-reading this summer. And The Dark Knight Rises has to top my movie list for those seen in th etheater — I also loved Hugo, which I saw on dvd (and there’s a good book as well).
Great suggestions all over the place here! And I would second the BBC/PBS “Sherlock” series for movie-watching advice. I read alot with my knitting, and the third book of yesterday’s calm Sunday at home (one finished early in day, one really enjoyable book during the day “The Care and Handling of Roses with Thorns by Margaret Dilloway about hs teacher aunt taking on her niece’s care while herself is in constant dialysis, then evening began next…) was part of new Stephen King novel, “11/22/63.” Such an inventive story, around (another) hs teacher going back in time to fix everything, including the JFK assassination. Not into his scary stuff, but the characters in this King work are so appealing and the workings of fate so mysterious, it is hard to put down, even on a busy Monday!
I have read The Eighty-Dollar Champion by Elizabeth Letts – a lot of history and an interesting true story. And I am slowly re-reading The Hobbit. Haven’t been to a movie in several years but we were thinking about seeing Brave.
I enjoyed watching the Avengers. Happy anniversary and thanks for the chance to win!
This summer I am getting caught up on Diana Gabaldon’s Lord John books. The Lord John books are mysteries. These fall “in between” some of her Jaime and Claire Fraser books. If you’ve never read the J&C books, you really should. She is writing the eighth book in that series which will be out next year. It looks like Sony will be making a cable series of those books. They fall in the category of historical fiction but include some time travel and a wonderful love story. Also, if you “like” her on Facebook, you can read “daily lines” that she puts up.
There were two fun chic flicks I found through netflix: Chalet Girl and The Decoy Bride. Both British with some light hearted fun.
Thank you for this contest…..I now have tons to add to my winter reading list.
Book…..Room
Movie….Katie Perry movie. I have new respect for her….in a good way!
I loved Locked On by Tom Clancy, Mark Greaney.
I’m a big mystery thriller fan. My fav’s this summer have been Defending Jacob and this weekend couldn’t put down very dark thriller Into the Darkest Corner. Also, The Snowman – can those Swedish mystery writers do anything wrong?
Just back from Stitches Midwest. Head filled with new info. Also, learning to weave using my stash yarn
I have tacked the Game of Thrones series, though I am only on the second. Really enjoying it. It has a lot of cross-over appeal and is a good read for people who may not usually read fantasy.
Movie was probably Spiderman (we saw all the major blockbusters, and overall McKayla Maroney and I were not impressed). I’m looking forward to listening to Gone Girl on audio, so I don’t sacrifice knitting time!
Books-
Heft by Liz Moore
The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes
Movies-
Whatever is showing on TCM
I don’t get much movie-watching or book reading right now, so it may not be fair to say that the best movie I saw was Brave. And the best book was The Scottish Prisoner.
This is easy. The ONLY movie I’ve seen this summer was Men In Black III.
Best book read this summer: Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand
Best movie: The Ides of March with Ryan Gosling and George Clooney
