Knitting Groups and a CONTEST!

Last night was our late-night shopping hours evening. We’re open later the first Thursday of each month. Some Thursday nights are crazy busy, and other nights are calm and laid back. Last night, we had a great group of knitters pop over from Illinois to hang out, shop, and knit. In that group there were experienced knitters and brand new knitters, which is always fun. Some of them were just learning to knit socks and were being encouraged and instructed by the more experienced knitters in their group.

But the unique thing about this group? Some of them were the very first in-person shoppers to visit The Loopy Ewe. Here’s a photo of their first trip, back when Loopy was just a teeny tiny corner of shelves in my basement. They could stand in the middle of it and reach any shelf and any skein of yarn. (I’m not exaggerating.) The thing is, I think they had just as much fun on that first visit as they did on this visit (and all of their visits in between). It doesn’t matter how many shelves of yarn you have – just getting knitting friends and yarn together pretty much guarantees that fun will follow.

I made up a couple of extra Spring Fling Goodie Bags, just so I could share them with you in a blog contest! This year’s bag was a clear vinyl tote with shoulder straps, that came with a yellow-checked Loopy Ewe Mug, a sample of hand lotion, a Loopy sticky note set, and a skein of Wollmeise in a variety of colorways. Would you like to win one? Just leave us a comment below and answer this question: How many years have you been knitting? We’ll draw for the Goodie Bag winners next week.

  1. I have been knitting on and off for more than 50 years but my interest in knitting has increased over the past 5 years when I decided to take a sock class. Knitting has been a life saver for me – a time of respite since I am the sole caregiver of my 94 year old dad and 90 year old mom. Along with a full time job, it does not give me much time to knit but late in the evening when they both are tucked into bed I explore this web site and a couple of others. Needless to say I have quite a stash but there is always room for more!! I also get a few rows done – great way to relax after a difficult day.

  2. I’ve been knitting for something like 25 years now. I really can’t believe its been that long though!

  3. I’ve been knitting since 2007ish. When my son went to HS and I decided it was time to meet some new people….and I have. And they are wonderful!

  4. I have only been knitting for 10 years or so, but it feels like I have always done it and it has become such huge part of who I am and what I do that I couldn’t imagine not doing it. Knitting and spinning has become as essential as breathing.

  5. I’m a self taught knitter that been knitting for 7 years. I stopped for a few years because of lack of good yarn. Luckily I’ve found you guys and I’m in it for the long haul. 🙂

  6. I taught myself how to crochet in November 2009 and decided to learn how to knit in May 2010.

  7. My Aunt Ruth taught me to knit when I was seven years old, and I haven’t looked back since. That was 33 years ago 🙂

  8. It’s been almost eight years since I picked up my first pair of needles and some Red Heart yarn. I’m so glad I took the plunge back then…and so glad I found TLE! 🙂

  9. I’ve been knitting for about 14 years, picked up crochet, spinning and soon weaving along the way. 🙂

  10. Oh man, I haven’t been knitting for very long. Probably only about 3-4 years. I started because I loved yarn and couldn’t crochet much (because of the cramping) and wanted to try something different. WendyKnits had some of the most amazing sock patterns ever and I decided I needed to knit socks. I’ve been an avid knitter ever since.

And have bought a lot of fun stuff from TLE because of my love of knitting.

  11. I took a break in the middle but I think it has been about 30 years. I really stepped it up again 9 years ago and now I am trying drop spindling!

  12. I began knitting in the 60’s, stopped after 2 sweaters. Began again 2 years ago, this time knitting socks, and, recently, shawls.

  13. A co-worker taught me to knit when we were working at the old Scruggs, Vandervoorts & Barney store in Crestwood. It was about 50 years ago. I primarily made sweaters and afghans. Took a hiatus from knitting for a few years – started needlepoint and quilting – then came back to knitting when I discovered socks & scarves! Now my yarn stash is almost as large as my fabric stash.

  14. Wow – longer than I want to claim. I started knitting in the 60s. Taught myself from a book and didn’t do too much with it. Remember knitting a scarf and hat for college boyfriend, now husband. Knit again briefly late 70s, early 80s when my first daughter was born. Took it up again about 4 years ago and have been knitting obsessively ever since. Who knew knitting socks could be so much fun.

  15. Hi! I learned to knit when I was 5 or 6 years old (by my grandma) but it was a short lived interest. I picked up the needles again 9 years ago. It has been pretty much an obsession ever since.

  16. It’s hard to say. My grandmother taught me to knit. My first big project was a sweater I knit in high school. I knit a little in the 1980’s. It was only after I retired and my new BFF introduced me to beautifully colored sock yarns that I became a yarn addict. So I would have to say… I have been seriously knitting socks and lace for 6 years! I am proud to be a Loopy Groupie!

  17. I first learned to knit in sixth grade. I had gotten a kit, a Barbie coat,it came in a tin and it was turquoise. My teacher Mrs. Rogers let me stay in at recess and helped me complete it. Many years have passed with occasional forays into yarn, but when my sons started wrestling I needed something I could do in the stands and the scarf craze had just hit. Then I took a class in knitting socks and I was hooked. That was about ten years ago…and still going strong!

  18. I’ve been knitting since sophomore year of college…so that would make it about 9 years. I needed something to keep me sane during those long college cram nights.

  19. I love the pic of your purple Iris. I have tons of the lighter purple in my garden and like to mix them with yellow flowers.

I’ve been slacking off on …. taking care of my nails. Looking down, I see that I could really use a nice manicure to even out the length.

    Love your site.

  20. I taught myself to crochet 39 years ago and taught myself to knit 10 years ago. I am almost exclusively a knitter now.

  21. Officially – about 33 years (My mom taught me when I was 5). But I’ve been knitting in earnest for about 12 years.

  22. I learn how to know 49 years ago and I still love it! I am about to beome a first time Grandma so there is a whole new aspect I get to delve into!!!

  23. I’ve been knitting for about 7 years now. My RA had one of the professors at our university teach all the girls on my dorm floor that wanted to learn.

  24. I have been knitting for about five years. I decided to teach myself after exams one winter while in law school. I have been addicted every since then.

  25. I’ve been knitting for 50 years. It’s what keeps me (more or less) sane.
One of these days I’m going to make it to a Spring Fling! It sounds like knitters heaven!

  26. I just passed my 5-year knitting anniversary. I learned to knit shortly before my ex traded in for a newer model. Garter stitch saved my sanity! Now I knit through everything: joys, sorrows, TV, movies, road trips, boring WebEx meetings….TGFK!

  27. I learned to knit a long, long time ago. I was probably 8 or 9 years old. I knit for a while then stopped and moved on to other crafty type things. I started back in again about 15 years ago and got really into it when I started knitting socks!

  28. I taught myself to knit 10 (!!) years ago. Freshman year of college. My best friend desperately wanted a Harry Potter scarf and the crocheted ones just didn’t look right. And like that I was hooked. 😉

  29. Let’s see now….we learned to knit in the third grade at our primary school, but I didn’t voluntarily pick up the needles again till my twenties, so 35-40 years. Can’t imagine my life without knitting!

  30. I taught myself to knit about 18 years ago, but put it down for a long time. I didn’t pick it back up until after the death of my 11 year old son 3 years ago. Now knitting is my therapy. I don’t think I will ever give it up. Call it an obsession or a passion!

  31. A dear church friend taught me how to knit a few years ago at the ripe old age of 50. And I’ve become completely hooked. And I love Loopy Ewe.

  32. I purchased a teach yourself to knit book when I was 18. So, I guess I’ve been knitting on and off now for a little over 50 years. I wish I had found the Loopy Ewe many moons ago.
