Got a Dream? April Contest!

dsc02464It’s time for our monthly contest and I was all set to ask a different question, but then this You Tube video came through in an email from my mom and it changed my direction. (And then I promptly got it in 3 other emails, saw it on a couple of blogs, and heard Anderson Cooper talking about it on CNN last night.) What a great video! It’s all about a gutsy lady who had a dream and made something happen with it. So this month’s contest is to leave a comment and tell me what your dream is. Now I know fully well that some of you will not be brave enough to write it down for everyone to see, with your name attached! But I hope that you do. It seems like step one in any dream is to be bold and put it in writing, right? Of course not many people take the time to read the blog comments on our monthly contest (except for me!), so you don’t have to worry that someone you know might see and recognize you. On the other hand, some people DO take the time to read them and with a question like this, you could inspire a whole lot of people by putting your dream out there. I look forward to seeing what you all dream about doing or having or being, somewhere in the future. Will you share? (Hmmm – and another thought – if any of you read a comment and your first thought is, “Well I could help her/him with THAT dream. ” – email me. Maybe we can put some dreamers and enablers together to make things happen.) One of my dreams is to live in Colorado one day – thus today’s photo. We’ll draw for winners next week on Wednesday, so you have a week to leave your comment. I have some skeins of Wollmeise to give away.

Speaking of Wollmeise, we did a mini update with some of it yesterday, but since the great majority of our boxes are being held up by customs in Chicago, we won’t have more for who knows how long. In the meantime, we have a few things to take care of around here (Spring Fling, May Sock Club, “Don’t Be Blue Kits”) so even if it does arrive soon-ish, it will still be awhile before it’s going to go up. (Translation: no need to stalk and watch for it.) Maybe some of the customs agents in Chicago have had a dream to capture a case of Wollmeise for their very own….

  1. My dream is to move from the prairie of middle South Dakota to my beloved Black Hills. I want to live in a small cottage in the woods with hubby and my knitting and wild animals and fresh air. Devine………….

  2. I have read some great dreams and I wish all of you the best at making those dreams come true.

My dream is to always be a stay at home mom. I really no desire to get a real job again. If I could find someway to make a little extra money with my spinning or knitting that would be icing on the cake.

I am blessed beyond belief with what I do have and I am thankful for the wonderful life that I have even though at times I think it isn’t all that great.

  3. My dream is to teach yoga for my post retirement, part-time job. I have 13 years to get over my shyness! Right now I take many classes – yoga, kickbox, pilates, spinning (cycling, not fiber related). I dream that I could teach yoga to older folks. That would be very satisfying.

  4. My current (realistic) dream is to do well in the Master Knitters program through the TKGA. I want to learn more about knitting, be able to answer people’s questions when they have them, and the bragging rights won’t hurt either.

My life-long, totally unrealistic, but totally fun dream has always been to be a famous singer. I’m a pretty dreadful singer, but it’s fun to dream.

  5. My first dream was the same as yours-to live in Colorado! I was lucky enough to make it come true 25 years ago, and I’ve never been sorry for the move, even tho’ where I live here in Gunnison is occasionally the coldest place in the nation during the winter!

My most immediate dream is to take spinning lessons as soon as parental committments settle down a bit.

My long term dream is for our church to raise enough money this summer and fall to have our own building. I have faith that my two dreams can come true.

  6. God has blessed me beyond measure. I can’t dream of a life that would be better than the one he has led me through. I have a wonderful, loving husband and two grown, independent sons. I have a cozy home, a comfortable income and enough of the “things” that make life enjoyable. I have the love of family and friends and the joy of a hobby I love. I have a church family that nurtures my soul and a knitting group that broadens my mind. I have a great sense of humor, insatiable curiosity, self-confidence and zest for life. Nothing is beyond my abilities or capabilities.

There are things that might make my life better–independent wealth being foremost–but I don’t really NEED anything.

My dream is that everyone finds the strength to make her dreams come true.

  7. I’ve already had the good fortune to live many of my dreams, which is nice thing to be able to say. My current dream is move back to my hometown, where I can be closer to my elderly parents and my nephew. A fairly simple dream, but one I hope to make come true one day soon.

  8. I have a number of dreams — all of them obtainable if I work at it. I dream of being credit card debt free and within a year that will become a reality.

My big dream is to own a yarn shop with a cafe area that would serve wonderful coffees, baked goods and yummy salads/soups/sandwiches. I don’t know where I would want to be located. My dream doesn’t go that far because it will never happen.

I also dream of having more time for myself to knit, read, and do community volunteer work.

  9. My dream is to get my PhD in Comparative Literature and become a tenured professor and literary translator who lives with her gorgeous husband, kids and lots of pets in a beautiful house full of fiber near the Ocean πŸ™‚ I do already have the gorgeous husband and 3 cute cats, so I’m on my way!

  10. I dream of not having to drive to work, not having to go to work and not having to leave the house if I don’t feel like it.

  11. I dream of several things I won’t list, but here are a couple. I dream of a visit to my home state of Texas (I live in Indiana). Although my parents are long gone and I am an only child, I have other aging relatives that I would love to see as well as my cousins and many friends I grew up with. Plus, I would love for my girls (19 and 15) to get to know some of my family. In our 16 years in Indiana, we have only been for a visit three times.

I dream of having a job someday that really makes a difference in people’s lives. I set out at college to become a veterinarian and got sidetracked. I love animals and I know caring for them in turn affects their owners in a positive way. Any other job that would allow me to do the same would be great.

God willing, my dreams and many others expressed here, will come true.

  12. I’m living my dream as of January 2008. I got to retire at 47, becoming a domestic princess/diva. Thankfully, I have a wonderful husband who wants me to stay home and enjoy my life, not find another job. Financially, I’m in good condition so I can do this. The house is paid for, and there are no car payments or bills. The husband does all the home and car repairs so we don’t have that expense either.

I can spend my spare time spinning, knitting, going to guild events/meeting, hanging out with my spin/knit pals and my husband.

If there was anything I would add, it would be a bigger “studio” for all my fiber related stuff and other craft hobbies. Maybe I can talk the husband into that addition one of these days. lol

  13. I have a wonderful life and supportive family. I am so lucky, but I do have a secret wish. I dream of writing novels. I know there is a good author inside me. But I have fear, too. Fear that I cannot meet my own expectations. Guess I’ll never know until I try, but it’s too easy to put it off another day. The video makes me think deeply about trying to gather courage, conquer the fear and just try.

  14. I grew up as a “lonely” only child so I had four beautiful children–one daughter and three sons. Raising them was the most wonderful and amazing accomplishment of my life. They are all now adults but due to petty ridiculous circumstances, I have not seen them together for five years. My husband and I get along with all of them and see each one regularly but they have divided into two camps (daughter and oldest son vs. two younger sons). My only dream is to see them all together again–laughing and having fun like they did when they were growing up.

  15. My dream is to convince my hubby to have another child. I would love to quit my job and become a full time mom. I never had the chance with my first one. I’ve recently developed the urge to home school, too. I dream about being able to encourage my children to learn more about things they love rather than forcing them to learn things that don’t really matter in the real world.

  16. Mmm, dreams.

I’d like to 1. finish my thesis on time; 2. get a job that helps bolster science in Ireland; working towards making Ireland a good place to do science, convincing smart people not to leave the country, and encouraging industry to invest in Irish research groups.

Now, it’s nearly 100% likely that I will 1. finish my PhD and 2. move to Ireland afterwards. It’s the other stuff — being done in time to walk this year, and getting the job that really supports my personal goals — that are dreams I’m still holding my breath about.

  17. You know, I’ll be happy to pick up those boxes at the post office and bring them down with me next week? My only fee would be a few skeins.

  18. My dream is to be able to go back to school to be a Veterinarian. I/m not at a point in my life where it looks likely, but there’s always hope, right?

  19. Sadly, I think part of my problem is that I don’t have any dreams. I want to travel with my DH when the kids are grown and moved out (they are 14 and almost 12 now.. and I had my son when I was 20). I want to have adventures and experience life.. something I think I missed out on by having my children so young. I used to want to go to college, but it’s so darn expensive. I want to take art classes and start painting again. I don’t know… it all seems so trivial sometimes. I feel like I’ve already come such a long way in life.. that I am in such a better place than I used to be.. I guess I gave up on dreams. Time to figure out some news ones. Thanks for the challenge.

  20. Its been a long time since I ‘ve allowed myself to dream. Life has made me focus on “today” each day, for a long time.
Reading through the list has been inspiring. I think I’m going to hold onto these wonderful pieces and let some magic happen.

  21. My dream would be to bake. All the time. For a living, for fun, and just because. Breads, cakes, sweet things, savory things, just baking.

My goal is to apply for culinary school in the next 6 months and attend next fall.

Eeck! Typing it makes it all the more real! Thanks everyone for sharing.

  22. I just saw that video linked from elsewhere and wow…good for her!

My dream is to finally finish college and get a degree in chemistry. I’m older than the typical college grad…30 to be exact. I was a bit nervous starting college over again, but it seems like I never missed a beat.

I’d like to find out more about materials science because I love fiber and knitting…it seems fitting.

Then when I get my degree, I’d like to buy a house with my husband. A place of our own with our Puggle named Nugget.

  23. I have always worked for my dreams and have been successful but as I approach 60 – my new dream is to find elder friendly housing with a friend to share it. My nest is now empty and I find that living alone is not what I want – I need another person or two to share the day. I will keep looking and try to make this happen so I don’t end up living with my aging mother.

  24. Where to begin? Reading these posts and thinking about my life, I realize how lucky I am and how much we are “living the dream”….how fortunate I have been in life. If I get to dream further: to be debt free…to work in a yarn store…to be able to sing (I am awful)…to travel to Scotland someday…for my children to find happiness in life as they grow up…to cure the common cold!

  25. My dreams are to raise my kids to love the Lord with all their hearts, to figure out if I am supposed to go back to school someday, to be the best wife and mother I can be, and to be an awesome friend. I fall short so many taimes, so it is a cnstant work in progress for me. I will never be perfect, but everyday I strive to be a little better than I was the day before.

  26. My dream is to move to Chicago. I want to go back to school at Columbia College (already accepted!!) in downtown Chicago and finish my degree in graphic design and then make a life for myself there.

  27. I dream of better health and I dream that my kids have a good life and be happy with the paths they have chosen and I dream of having several more arms so I can get all the cool projects done that I have squirrelled away! And getting rid of all the clutter would help too!

  28. My dream is to have my very own artisan fibre shop; I want to sell supplies for knitting, spinning, and sewing as well as feature the work of artists in the fibre world. Hmmm….kind of sounds like you might be living my dream Sheri!

Pam (who still holds out hope for a Canadian branch of the Loopy Ewe :-P)

  29. I’m living my dream right now. We are at the end of our house remodel, which includes a studio for my weaving looms. I will have the space now to be creative! And we got baby chicks a couple days ago, which I love watching.

The only thing I would really like is some sheep or alpacas, but I can always visit my friends for that, especially the alpacas. Oh, and I’d love to make goat cheese. But no goats either.

But for all intents and purposes, my dreams are fulfilled. Guess I gotta think of new ones.

  30. My dream is that stem cell research will be stepped up under the new Adminstration and that a cure will finally be found for Type 1 diabetes. My daughter was diagnosed when she was 5 1/2 — she’ll be 11 this July. She has courageously dealt with this blow and struggles with highs and lows everyday. To never see another child with diabetes again would be a dream come true!

  31. Wish it could happen real soon dream: Have an afternoon of knitting with Sheri, Yarn Harlot, Mason-Dixon gals, Cat Bhordi, Cookie A. and Eunny.

Hope it’ll happen in the next ten years: Spend a month in Scotland, tracing my mother’s family and perhaps, just perhaps, stumble across some wool.

  32. I had always wanted to have a cat and finally after 22 years my husband decided cats were great. We have 8 now and I’m in heaven. The dream I think I will never attain is to be organized and decluttered. I just can’t picture that.
And of could I too have the Wollmeise dream….

  33. Thanks for the question Sheri. It has made me think really hard about my life and where I would like to go in the later part. My dreams when I was much younger were very high, discover a new animal, cure cancer, end war, stop hunger. We could do anything then. I have not done any of the things that I had intended. No college degree, no new animals and cancer, hunger and war still plague us every day.
My dream is to find myself and what it is I am supposed to do. I think we all have an assigned task. I do not think I have found mine yet, and I don’t know where to look. Smaller wishes include, seeing a volcano, a glacier and whales. Not all at once, of course. Learning to play the piano, lose enough weight to be able to be healthier and to be a better knitter this time next year. I wish all of the wishes and dreams we have all had the courage to express here would come true or at least a path them would become more obvious. I also wish that the dreams so personal that we can not bring ourselves to put them into words might also have a chance to come true.

  34. The video was a highlight of my week yesterday.

My dream is a short-term one. I want to the guide dog puppy I’m raising to make it as a guide and I want to be able to hand her over to her new handler at the graduation ceremony. Then I want to bring home another puppy and do it again.

  35. My dream is to finally be comfortable in my own skin, to learn to like myself, and to not be so afraid all the time. An earlier comment (Emily, Apr 15, 8:27 a.m.) talked about being brave, traveling through Europe alone and having the guts to jump from a plane. I totally agree! Why do we keep ourselves so small? I want to live large and not be afraid to make mistakes.

  36. I dream of opening a local yarn shop (our town desperately needs one!) that’s big enough to have a section for coffee and pastries, a room for classes and get-togethers, as well as lots and lots of great yarn. There’s an empty lot only two blocks from my house that’s just perfect for it, and my hubby and I have been ‘arguing’ over whether it should house my yarn shop/cafe, or his gut-busting dream burger stand. So I guess there’s a secondary dream that I need first: I dream of winning the Mega Millions drawing!!

  37. …my daughter will be graduating from college in May and she has been working her way through college and also struggling with an eating disorder the whole way. The road hasn’t been easy for her, but I am so proud of her! I worry about her every waking moment, so my dream is for her to find peace of mind and to learn to love herself; for her to be able to accept love in her life and to make a life for herself that allows her to overcome this disease. Then, I don’t need to worry anymore! (But that’s impossible, isn’t it, once you are a parent! Okay…worry not so much!) Knitting has been an important tool for her (and me!) to help her calm down and relax and for that I am so grateful for this “hobby”. It has literally been a lifesaver. Who knows? Maybe she’ll own a knitting store someday! πŸ™‚

  38. There are a lot of dreams here. I still haven’t perfected mine but I’d like to travel overseas more (first class of course!) and then retire to a little house on the water where I can craft and listen to the waves.

  39. There are so many inspiring dreams .. i hope you all attain them. Sheri this is a great question because it makes me think about what i truly want out of life.

I dream of writing a novel or three, they are all in my brain i just haven’t taken the time to physically make them real. I have a quirky teenager i would love to write about bringing her up .. she has been um challenging shall we say. The stories i could tell about her oh my. I don’t want to be top of the lists or anything like that but comfortably anonymous where i live πŸ™‚
I dream of having my own yarn dyeing business with my eldest daughter ( she loves dyeing as much as i do ) and sharing lots of laughter and wonderful colours.
I dream of having the courage and confidence to do both of those things without fear.
Lastly, i dream that when my kids are adults and have their own children they will remember the laughter in the house, the long conversations and that there was always love no matter what.

Now let’s go make them happen ( well the kids are working on the getting to adulthood bit i can’t speed that one up.. )
    πŸ™‚

  40. Oh Sheri! I have watched this youtube over and over ~ I get chills and tears everytime! It is a true reminder that there is so much good in the world. What a great “moment”! Thanks for sharing it with your readers…it is spreading like wildfire!
My dream…. is / was / and will remain…. to have my own little country cottage type knitting shop and putter around in it all the live long day!

  41. My dream is to finish my college degree and be an engineer. It sounds boring, but I want to build things and prove to all of the people in my life who said “you aren’t smart enough” or “you won’t do it” that I could and did.

  42. My dream is to go to Spain when I am 50 (3 years to go!)

My other dream is to have more time to knit and read.

  43. My dream is simple…well, relatively simple. I want to adopt/foster children and then see them baptised.

We’ve started the process, which was scary in and of itself, but we’re off to the races now!

  44. I went to Africa 6 years ago. My dream is to go back–and if I could figure out a way to live there, to make that happen.
My “wish it would have been” dream is to have been an animal researcher in Africa. I wish I could have done something there to make a difference.

  45. Sheri, You and I share the same dream! I am absolutely in love with the state of CO and hope that someday I can live in a log cabin in the woods somewhere. My husband and I are close to making it a reality, just a few more years here in PA.

I must say I got a very good chuckle from Kathleen, the very first post. I too hate driving through the state of CT on my way to visit my uncle in MA. I have sat in more traffic in CT then any other state! Including one time when there seemed to be construction going on the entire length of the state. It was the longest road trip ever!!

  46. AHHHH dreams…my dream is for my sister to get better. She has lots of medical problems. Another dream would have my sister be on the What Not to Wear. She has been though so much, I think it would give her a lift & help her spirit.
Hope you get to Colorado one day. Our dream is when we retire in the next year or so to Full-time RV. To travel & see this USA & volunteer at different places. Have a great week…I got my Wendy sock book WHOOO HOOO

  47. I have lots of fleeting wishes and desires, things I’d like to do, places I’d like to travel. But I dream about a time years from now, when the kids are grown and I have grandkids to love on. I hope that I’ll have the means and ability to be able to be there for them and my kids, whatever they need. Family is ultimately the most important thing to me.

  48. I’d love to move up to Northern California and have some chickens, shetland sheep, alpacas, and Morgan horses…..and work at a marine mammal care center.
