Are you a Cook or a Baker?

dsc02418Besides being a knitter or crocheter, are you a Cook or a Baker? The definition for Cook is “one who cooks” (that’s so helpful.).  The definition for the process is: “1. To prepare, as food, by boiling, roasting, baking, broiling, etc.; to make suitable for eating, by the agency of fire or heat.” And Baker? “One who bakes.” And: “1. To prepare, as food, by cooking in a dry heat, either in an oven or under coals, or on heated stone or metal; as, to bake bread, meat, apples. Note: Baking is the term usually applied to that method of cooking which exhausts the moisture in food more than roasting or broiling; but the distinction of meaning between roasting and baking is not always observed.”  (Obviously Loopy’s dietary needs are simple – no cooking or baking necessary.)

I always thought of cooking as the daily meal kinds of things, and baking as the breads and dessert kinds of things. At any rate, I keep finding good recipes that I am ready to try, so I must be gearing up to get back into more regular meal preparations. Many of you know that we are experiencing the Empty Nest Syndrome for the first time this year, and one of the things that has suffered is the baking/cooking. (Hereafter known as B/C). It’s just hard to get excited about preparing meals for just the two of us, especially when we both get home around 6 pm. (That’s another reason why I am a fan of crockpots.) I have two blogs that I love, for recipes. The first is done by a gal who committed to crockpotting her family meals for an entire year last year. There are some great options on her site, and I’m trying her Buffalo Wing Soup next. I’ll let you know how it goes. The other blog I love for recipes is done by my friend Leigh Anne in Portland. She not only has great recipes, but she also has a gift for “staging” (unlike me) and every photo she takes to go with the recipe, makes you want to whip it right up. I’m thinking I need to try her Chocolate Chip Cookie Pie soon.  And while both sites have what I would consider “cooking” and “baking” recipes, I tend to go to the crockpot blog when I want meals and to Leigh Anne’s blog when I want desserts and sweets. 🙂  Check them out – I know you’ll find some great new recipes.

Here at Loopy Central, we are buried in 400 Sock Club boxes today (the great majority of them going out the door in a few minutes – thanks to all of you who paid so promptly!).  We decided that things were running “amok” – such a crazy day.  But then I looked “amok” up on (because apparently it’s a day for definitions) and this is what it said: “Noun: A psychic disturbance characterized by depression followed by a manic urge to murder.” Or you can spell it the other way: amuck and you get “in a frenzy to do violence or kill.”  So we’re no longer talking about things running amok/amuck.  Things are just fine here.  Busy, crazy, but fine. Really.

  1. Bake, Bake, Bake, Knit, Knit, Knit, and read love to read. My Kindle and King Arthur Flour have been life changing. Throw out all flour but King Arthur and use their website for recipes, if you want to see real difference in baking We have Ciabatta bread rising at the moment. Making eight loaves today because it freezes so well.
    Their Cinnamon Rolls, Chocolate Chip Cookies and Vanilla Dream Cookies are wonderful. Just as knitting is better with great yarn and needles baking needs the best ingredients also and I can read and knit with my kindle so much better than a regular book!

  2. i love to cook and bake. In college i used to start my day at 2 am where i baked in a natural food rest and bakery. Breads, cinnamon rolls, cream cheese and honey croissants, muffins, baklava, etc etc… I still cook, making meal plans and shopping accordingly. So my daughters boyfriend has definately expanded his appreciation for foods in the past 2 years as his mom does not really cook, or package cooks as i have named it. He is good and willingly will try everything at least once.

  3. I used to be a better cook than baker until I bought a Kitchen Aid mixer. Now I am obsessed with baking bread. It’s my favorite kitchen tool My husband even took a picture of me hugging it!

  4. 100% agree on the grocert=y shopping…. I’d cook and bake a lot more if it didn’t require store visits or dish washing.

  5. I am most definitely a baker! I can cook, in fact I do cook, and cook very well. However, my sister has the creative touch with cooking, and does marvelous things with a pork loin and fruit. I, on the other hand, like having both the strict regulations of measurement of baking, while having the option to decorate to my own taste. I love nothing more than a nice big cupcake, but also enjoy putting together fancy restaurant-style desserts. And bread…better yet, beer bread. YUM!!

  6. I’d rather bake, but baking is more of a special occasion thing, and right now all the family birthdays are behind us. Cooking, unfortunately, is every day. And I’m with you on the shopping. Because I live in this small town (village, really), I end up having to go to one shop for this and another shop for that, old world style. If you’ve got all morning, it’s a lovely custom: walking around the square. running into people you haven’t seen for a while and catching up, ducking into the nearest bar for a quick espresso. But it really does take all morning!

  7. I kind of think I’m both. As a cook, I rarely follow a recipe. I sort of concoct (sp??) a dish up based on what I have on hand and what I think will taste good together. Occasionally, I follow recipes. However, I become a baker around the holidays or special occasions, following a recipe to a T (well, sometimes I may throw in some chopped nuts or chocolate chips) because of the chemistry involved. That said, I plan to cook a nice dinner this weekend for my friend’s birthday and I will follow a new recipe to cook salmon. I also plan to bake a bread pudding, using Panera Bread’s Cinnamon Bread — they had a recipe card out during the holidays.

    BTW – I tried your Mexican Calzones back in January using ground chicken instead of beef and they were delicious!!!!!!! That recipe is a keeper, for sure. Last year, I made your Italian Beef in the crockpot — also very good. I need to make that again!!

  8. I am a cook – baking is too exact an art for me to be very successful- I do it evey once in a while when the Chocolate muse hits. My nest is so empty now that my twins are off to college. It’s just me and the cats. I even offer to cook for the neighbors so that I have people to eat the meals I prepare.

  9. Cook here! Love to experiment with ingredients. If I bake, it’s usually due to birthdays or holidays. I can, but like cooking best. Packaged cookies are usually present in this house. I like to save time on that and spend time on other things — like knitting!!! ;D

  10. I love to cook, and am ok at it.

    I do love to bake. I love to make up recipes. Good thing since I do it for a job. I bake everyday type stuff like brownies and then I have to do speciality type stuff when we have important people come through. I like to have a color or a theme and make up an image in my head. I know some cake decorating and have been enjoying learning more. Right now I am working on gum paste flowers and such.

    As for cook or bake, I do both. It depends on what’s going on. Just ask BFF Liz. If I’m cooking, she’s there for dinner. 😀
