Camp Loopy – The Pirate Edition!

Loopy Pirate Art 2016It’s time for Camp Loopy 2016 – The Pirate Edition! We’re all going on jaunt across the ocean with Pirate Loopy this year. (Remember – this is a virtual camp. You can participate from the comfort of your own home. No travel involved. We just like to pretend we’re going somewhere.)

Each month this summer (June, July and August) we will knit (or sew) a different project. You can participate for one month, two months, or all three months. We’ll announce the challenge approx. two weeks before the month starts, to give you time to pick a pattern and order. There is no official sign up – just put your order in and indicate in the order notes that you’re participating in Camp Loopy with us this summer. Of course there are benefits to participating, and we have contests, drawings, and fun going on all summer long surrounding Camp Loopy. We hope you will join us! Here are the details:

Month One1 ProjectsHere is our schedule:

Project One Yarn – The June Challenge: This project needs to be knit or crocheted between 6/1 and 6/30 (with a photo of the completed project uploaded to our Project One Photo Gallery by 7/1).

Theme: Treasure Maps. It’s important to have a map along when you head off into lands unknown. You pick your destination this month. Would you like to end up in Cable Cove? On Fair Isle? In Brioche Bay? Or in Lace Lagoon? Pick one of these techniques (Cables, Fair Isle, Brioche or Lace) for your June project.  Project must use a minimum of 400 yards in a single project. (A single project meaning one item, not sets of things like a hat/scarf combo, matching shawls for you and a friend, etc. You can, however, do a pair of socks or a pair of gloves as long as they use 400 yards.) To help with pattern decisions, we will count cables OR looks-like-cables, fair isle OR looks-like-fair-isle, brioche OR looks-like-brioche, and lace OR looks-like-lace. That way you don’t have to email and ask “Would this count?”. 🙂

Project One Fabric – The June Challenge: This project needs to be sewn 6/1 and 6/30 (with a photo of the completed project uploaded to our Project One Photo Gallery by 7/1).

Theme: Treasure Maps. Your destination this month is the Fat Quarter Coast! Pick a project that uses a total of 2 yards (or more) of fabric, and contains at least 2 Fat Quarters. (So 2 FQ’s plus 1.5 yards of another fabric or fabrics, which will give you a total of 2 yards to use.)

Camp Loopy BenefitsThe benefits:

1. We are offering a 15% Camp Loopy discount for the yarn or fabric you are going to use for your project during a designated “Camp Loopy Store Week” each month. The discount for Project One, is valid for one project’s worth of yarn/fabric during Camp Store Week One (May 11-18). To get the discount, you will need to leave us an order note on the order, telling us which yarn or fabric will be used for your Camp Project. We’ll apply the discount when your order comes through to us. If you’re going for free shipping in the U.S., please make sure that your discount won’t take you below the $100 free shipping level, or the website will add the shipping charge back in after we do the discount. (See Camp Store Week dates for the July project on the June 8th blog post.)

Loopy 22.  If you have a photo of your completed project uploaded to the proper Camp Loopy 2016 Photo Galleries by the deadline, you’ll be eligible to win one of our Loopy Gift Certificates for that month. We’ll be having the blog readers vote for the Reader’s Choice Award each month, and we’ll also be using the random generator to pick a couple more winners for Loopy Gift Certificates as well from each month’s gallery. Be sure to get your photos in on time! (When taking your photo, please be sure that we can see the entire finished project in the photo.)

3.  If you choose to do all three projects with us (yarn or fabric for each project purchased during Camp Store Week or later for that project and finished project photos uploaded by the deadlines) we will also be awarding you a special skein of beautiful fingering weight yarn, in a fun Camp Loopy Colorway at the end of the summer. (For Fabric Finishers – a special fabric prize!) We anticipate having the bonuses ready for you around mid September. This gives us the chance to get all of the photos approved and up in the photo galleries. (We get a lot of photos submitted that last day of the month, so it does take a little while for us to go through them all.)

So if you participate in all three months of Camp and follow the guidelines, you’ll get 3 projects done at a discount, you may earn one or more Frequent Shopper Bonuses and maybe some extra things through our Loopy Rewards Program, and you’ll get a special bonus reward for yet another project. Cool!

Camp FAQ'sNow – here are the answers to your Frequently Asked Questions about Camp Loopy.

Q. Can we participate with weaving instead of knitting or crochet?
A. For Camp Loopy, we’re sticking with knitting or crochet. (Or sewing or quilting.)

Q. I didn’t get to order during Camp Store Week, but if I order my project yarn/fabric later and complete the project by the deadline, does that still count, even though I know I don’t get the Camp Loopy discount?
A. Yes.  Any yarn/fabric ordered 5/11 or later can count for Project One. (6/8 or later for Project Two.) Make sure that you add a “Camp Loopy” note to your order, so that we know you’re participating. You’ll still be eligible for the drawings and prizes for that month, and if you finish all three projects by the deadlines (with yarn/fabric ordered during that project’s Camp Store Week or later), you’ll get the bonus reward.

Bird 1Q. I want to participate using yarn/fabric from my stash. Does that still count?
A. You are welcome to participate and knit or sew from stash and upload it to the gallery, as long as it’s yarn or fabric that we currently carry at The Loopy Ewe.  You will still be eligible for the random drawing that month, but you won’t be eligible for the free bonus prize at the end. To be eligible for that, you need to order that month’s required yardage (yarn or fabric) during Camp Store Week or later for that project.

Q. When you say to knit the project during the month of June (or July, or August), when EXACTLY does the timing start?
A. You can start at 12:01 am your time on the first of the month if you’d like, although a good night’s sleep and a good breakfast might be a better idea. The project needs to be done by 11:59 pm on the last day of the month. The photos need to be uploaded by 7/1 for Month One, 8/1 for Month Two, 9/1 for Month Three.

Q. Will we be getting new Camp Loopy Groups on the Loopy Groupie board on Ravelry?
A. Yes! The June groups will be divided based on your Treasure Map destination. So if you are doing a pattern with cables, you will be in the Cable Cove group. If you are doing a brioche pattern, you will be in the Brioche Bay group. Etc. The groups are totally for fun, and for those of you who want to chat in Camp Groups on the Loopy Groupie board. If that’s not your thing, you can stay out of the Camp groups and just work on your projects. But … I’ll bet you will meet a new friend or two if you participate in the chats.

ParrotQ. When you specify yardage in a project, can I use up the yardage by knitting double stranded? So if you say we must use 400 yards, can I do a 200 yard project, holding the yarn double? That would use 400 yards.
A. No – it doesn’t count to double up on the yarn to get the yardage. If you’d like to knit something held double, you’d need to use 800 yards so that you end up with a 400 yard knitted/crocheted project when it’s done.

Q. How do I know if I’m on track for the free bonus, and when will I get it?
A. If you purchase your project yarn/fabric during Camp Store Week (or later that same project month) and upload your photo by the deadline, then you are on track. Once Camp is over and the bonus is ready (approx. mid-September), we’ll send you a notice to let you know. You will have the option of having your bonus added in the box with your next order from us, or you can choose to have it sent to you right away on its own and we’ll just add a shipping charge to that.

Q. Why do we have to purchase the yarn or fabric during or after Camp Store Week each month, if we want the bonus?
A. Two reasons. One – it costs us money to fund this (the contests, the extras, the free bonus at the end) and your purchases help us to be able to afford to do this. Two – it helps us to guarantee that everyone is working on the project during the designated time and not simply pulling a finished (or half finished) project out of their pile and saying they did it “for camp”. Part of the challenge is starting and finishing a project within the 30 day time period. It keeps an even playing field for all of the people earning the bonuses.

Camp Extra Fun!The Fun! In addition to getting projects done along with discounts and free rewards, another part of the fun is talking to fellow campers on the Loopy Groupie Board on Ravelry. Not on Ravelry? No worries. Participating in the groups is not required. We just add those in for extra fun. The groups will change each month, so you’ll get the chance to meet a lot of new Loopy friends.

MonkeyWe’ll be including a Camp Loopy pin in your May Camp orders (while supplies last). Add the pin to your project bag and watch for a photo contest with your pin and project at the end of May!

Of course we have Camp T-Shirts for you again this year, because half the fun of going to Camp is getting the t-shirt to tell everyone you’ve been!

For those of you who signed up for Camp Club (new this year!), your kit is in your cart and ready to ship whenever you check out. You are welcome to add your Camp project supplies to the order as well.

Ok – pick your pattern and pop over to The Loopy Ewe to get your yarn order in. We’ll get them shipped right out so that you’re ready to start in on it June 1st. We can’t wait to sail the seas with you this summer!

Sheri and The Loopy Ewe Crew

  1. This looks like a fun time will be had on the high seas! Yo-ho-ho in a bucket of yarn! Cast Away Mateys! I am bound for Camp Loopy!

  2. For Fair Isle – which definition is in use for this term here? According to wikipedia:

“Some people use the term “Fair Isle” to refer to any colourwork knitting where stitches are knit alternately in various colours, with the unused colours stranded across the back of the work. Others use the term “stranded colourwork” for the generic technique, and reserve the term “Fair Isle” for the characteristic patterns of the Shetland Islands.”

    1. Either definition works for us! (There is leeway in there, since we said Fair Isle or Fair Isle look-alike. Both definitions fit with this.)

  3. I must have missed something. What is ‘Camp Club’. I ordered my yarn today for Camp Loopy.

    1. Hi Mary (and Darla!) – We are doing a Camp Club this year where we have offered an exclusively dyed skein of yarn and a fun Camp extra each month during Camp Store Week. We had signups in early April, which we advertised in our monthly newsletter. The spots are all full, but you don’t need to be doing Camp Club in order to do Camp Loopy! That was just a fun extra.

      1. If we decide to use the camp club yarn for our project will that still count for the bonus yarn at the end? Or do we still need to buy additional yarn to count for that?

  4. I’m super excited to take part this year! Are we able to come into the store to get our yarn? I’m local and would like so save shipping if it is available!

  5. I love this camp!! I received the yarn for my July project but did not see a note of which “cabin” I am in……

  6. I was just wondering about Camp Loopy for 2017? I would love to be included in the yarn camp, this year.I am sure it is too soon for much information but I would like to be on the waiting list if possible. Thank you

    1. Hi Jo! We will have information on Camp Loopy 2017 in May (although signups for the Camp Loopy Club will be sometime earlier in the spring.) We’ll make sure to publicize it on the blog, in the monthly email newsletter, and on Ravelry, Facebook and Instagram. We’d love to have you join us!
