It’s time to unveil the specs for Project Two! Now remember, you can’t start knitting on it until July 15th.
* The knit time for this one is 7/15 – 8/15, with photos uploaded by 8/16. (Just one extra day for photo uploading, because this project won’t need to be blocked like Project One.)
* International Campers – due to longer shipping times, your project should be done 8/22, with photos uploaded by 8/23.
Project Two is called “Hiking in the Mountains”. Doesn’t everyone have to go on a hike when they’re at camp? I know that it’s not always in the mountains, but it always felt like you were dragging yourself up a steep hill/mountain, by the very end of the hike, waiting for it to be done. (Or was that just me?)
For this project, the challenge is to knit or crochet either a pair of socks or a pair of mittens or a pair of gloves, in an adult size. (No fingerless mitts this time around.) The other part of the challenge is that the pattern you use needs to contain cables, which are always fun to do!
Here are two blog posts (one, two) which contain more information on Camp Loopy and how the projects work. The first one is the original post about it, and the second one has the Q & A.
*Β Once again, we are offering you a 20% discount on the yarn for this project (limit one Project Two discount per person, you’ll need to leave an order note telling us which yarn is for Camp Loopy, and this offer expires 7/8). We’ll take the discount off when we print out your order. Make sure that the discount won’t take you under the $75 free shipping amount (for U.S. packages), if you’re going for free shipping.
* Once again, we are offering you double Frequent Shopper Benefits if you get the yarn from us during July’s Camp Store Week (July 1 through July 8th at midnight, Central Time) and complete the project with photo uploaded by the due date.
* Check your order form for the name of your Hiking Trail Guide. (It will be one of the Loopy Elves.) We’ll have a bit of fun with that this month, too.
So how about some pattern ideas to get your creative juices flowing? Here are just a few cable-y options to get you started:
For socks: Diamonds and Cables, Ribs and Cables, Basket Case Socks, Cables Galore, Twisted Celtic Cable Socks, German Stocking Pattern, BFF Socks, and Taglioni.
For mittens: Bavarian Tulip Mittens, Knitted Mittens with Cables, Glitten, Hugs and Kisses Mittens, Cherry Mittens, Aran Winter Set Mittens, and Wood Hollow Mittens.
For gloves: Knotty Gloves, Three Oaks, Brunnhilde, He’s Driving Me Wild Gloves, Knitted Gloves with Cables and Bobbles, and Lady Sunshine.
Of course there are a lot of beautiful fingerless mitts with cables that could be turned into mittens or gloves, with a little know-how. I’m not linking to them, because someone will then knit them as a mitt and say “but you linked to it in your blog as one of the ideas!!”. π Β Just keep in mind that you can be innovative and turn fingerless patterns into regular mittens and gloves by combining a favorite mitten/glove formula (construction and number of stitches) with a fingerless mitt stitch pattern that you like.
We have a winner from our Crazy Campfire Story! Congratulations to Deb from West Virginia who wins two skeins of Claudia Hand Painted Fingering Weight yarn, in her choice of color. (She picked Cabin Fever to remind her of Camp Loopy when she wears the socks). Thanks to all who helped to participate in the storytelling. What a fun time Loopy has had!
So back to Project Two – who’s in and what are you going to make? (And don’t forget to bring along your walking stick and your Deep Woods Off.)
Sheri stillsoimpressedwiththeProjectOnephotosthatcontinuetopourin
P.S. Happy Canada Day to our Canadian Loopies, and Happy Fourth of July to our U.S. Loopies! Have a great, safe weekend, everyone.
I’m in,
I waited up to find out what our new project is :00
off to peruse cabled patterns :0)
Thanks so much for all the fun Sheri
Much love, mel x x
I’m and off tho choose yarn and pattern. Celebrating
Don’t love to hike, but my hubby does… Maybe he’ll get the pair of socks – or not… Thanks Sheri & Elves!
Guess it is about time I get forced into knitting a cable! I have a sock pattern (top down) from Cascade Yarns that I have been wanting to knit. Off to the website to buy yarn. Have a great July 4th.
Yay! I love cables…& the Bavarian Tulip Mittens are already in my Rav Faves. Time to find the right yarn! Thanks Sheri!
I KNEW IT!! I KNEW IT WAS GONNA BE SOCKS!!!
I’m in, but I’ve got no idea what yet. Must troll through stash of patterns first….
Thank God you finally posted this. Now I can relax and get some work done this morning!! I’ve been checking your post every ten minutes. Socks are my true love but mittens are my second favorite. It’s going to be hard to pick!!! Thanks for the links. That will help. Happy Holidays to everyone and enjoy the weekend….it can’t come fast enough for me. Now comes the fun part..picking pattern and yarn!!!!!
Thanks for all the fun Sheri and Elves. I hope your move goes well. I can hardly wait to see you in Colorado!
Woohoo! Going to make me some BFF socks!
I’m in and ordered my yarn! Now to find the perfect pattern.
I think I’m going to do Owlie Socks but I’ll modify them because I’m very new to cables!
I just bought Knit.Sock. Love and Socks From the Toe Up yesterday! Woo! I am so ready for this π
i had to decided which cable item to make since there are two patterns in my queue that fit the requirements; i am going to be selfless and not make the almera gloves that i have been dying to make, but rather to make the manly aran socks in madelinetosh’s posy for the bf (he wants pink socks, so he’ll get them).
Yay! I’m knitting the Pembrokeshire Pathways socks-cables AND hiking themed!!!
Now to finish project #1…
Two of the patterns you suggested for socks are “out of stock”.
Man, I’m so far behind!!!
But I’d love to make the BFF socks – so I’m in and I better get project 1moving along faster1
I’m in. Off to browse for sock pattern.
I’m pretty sure I’m going to try my hand at Glittens but we’ll see.
I am going to make socks but I can’t decide between Salto and Riptide Socks. They’re both in my Ravlery favorites. Sheri, thank you so much!! I am having so much fun with Camp Loopy!
I ordered Spud & Chloe Fine in “Red Hot”. I am going to peruse my Wendy Johnson and Cookie A. sock books and earmark some possibilities. Most of the patterns in those books use that weight of yarn, so I should be able to swatch around after my yarn arrives and find one that works. I have been wanting to knit almost all of the socks out of those books, but they have me a little bit intimidated. This will be the motivation I need. Now, I just need to finish those last few rows of “Daybreak” before my sock yarn gets here!
Just ordered 3IG in Bridget, thinking I might have to do Trail Mix Socks. It’s just too appropriate. π
I am in!! I am probably going to make some mittens out of the fingerless mitts I saw in More Last Minute Knitted Gifts. It had a wicked multi-strand cable on it!! Just gonna convert the pattern by using a mitten end and decrease till it’s time to BO.
Gonna check the weight as soon as I get home and then BUY SOME YARN!!!
I think I should make mittens. I haven’t finished my last pair of socks yet, so no need to make it extra hard on myself!
Love sock yarn but hate to knit socks, so this was an easy choice for me. My mitten pick is Kirsten Kapur’s “All The Water” in Dream in Color Classy “Valentine” – the perfect color for football season here!
Well, I changed my mind and now I think I make the Owlie Socks into mittens. I have been wanting to knit a pair of mittens for playing in the snow this winter!
I hope to be better at this one than our last – i will join in and drag out a mitten pattern or two… but hope on hope ever – i did get some wollmeise for pamuya (i’m sure they are both misspelled) and will do that even if it is too late to have it count as a camp project…. life, as always, did its best to get in the way!
I just bought the BBP pattern and I have to say that the charts make absolutely no sense to me. This is just a warning in case someone else picks it. I have used many charts in the past!
Okay, so I’ve never been to camp. Not as a kid, not as a grown-up. If all of the knitting I do in my imagination counted, I’d be in. Otherwise, the job situation seems to want a lot of attention – maybe I can cable that?
I haven’t knit mittens so Project 2 is a good excuse to try knitting a pair!
Checked out All the Water and I must make that mitten too. Once I debate over blue or black, I’ll order.
Augh! I bought 6 hanks Claudia’s Handpainted Steelers colorway, specifically to knit socks, and was already considering cables & ribs for the first pair — can I count that as my Camp Loopy Project 2? Although I’m probably not going to finish them within the timeframe given…but I would like to! The first pair would be for my Dear Old Dad, a dyed-in-the-wool Steelers fan. Whaddaya say, Loopies, can I count this as Project 2?
So can the mittens be the kind where you can flip open the top to expose your fingers for using a cellphone?
The first project was such a blast, I have to join in on this one, too. Especially since I can do socks, and may be able to get my project done in time for Sock Summit! http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/owlie-socks I’m going to try to add some extra color to the pattern, too, and see how many new “colorful metaphors” I end up hurling at the universe when I get frustrated with the attempt. π
Thanks for all the hard work you and the Elves are putting in. I hope it’s as much for for you guys as it is for us.
Kelly – yes, convertible mittens are ok!
Yeah, I wanted to make a pair of mittens to match the 2 color scarf. Now to go off and order another skein of the yarn I used.
I just knew that project 2 was going to be socks or hand wear!!! I have picked Hermoine Loves Her Cabled Mitts and Lang Yarns Yak to knit them with!! Order placed.
PS I have a great Shephards Crook DH gave me years ago, I use it everyday to walk anyway!!
Sorry for being a pain in the ass already, but do traveling stitches count as cables? I’m thinking of Heriz from the Silk Road Socks book.
Now I just have to decide whether to order some MadTosh or Three Irish Girls… I’ve never knit with either, and I’m determined to try something new.
ohhh. I had a feeling it would be socks but I’m glad there is a mitten/glove option. I’m socked out, and I’ve never knit gloves, so I think I might attempt the “Knotty Gloves” pattern. I’ve seen it before and liked it then, so perfect to do it now!
I just had to rip out my June shawl and start over because I didn’t have enough yarn. Have to really focus to get it done in time, but it will be fun to shop for yarn for part 2!
I must admit Sheri I was shreiking in horror when I read SOCKS GLOVES or Mittens – In all the years I have been knitting I have started probably over a dozen pair of socks and only completed 1 pair which I had to give to my DH b/c they were like bigfoot socks – EGADS – I will take the lesser of the evils and try the Mittens – Don’t think I will be needing mittens in FL but hey – we did have some cold days last winter. after researching and perusing the patterns I think I will go with the Wood Hollow – I need a worsted weight selection – I am such a S-L- O- W knitter – I better put the pedal to the metal on Camp Loopy I or I won’t be qualified – Now I just need to have some fun deciding what yarn to make those Mittens out of. Want to try something I have never used before – MT Vintage, MalaB Rios – or maybe something decadent like Maiden Hair or Fleece Artist. Hope you have a very happy 4th ! Melody
My first cabling project…woohoo! Socks…..woohoo! Stupid-busy time at work….oohoow (woohoo backwards). I’m going to weenie out and choose an anklet or slipper-sock pattern, and will use DIC Classy so I have a prayer of finishing by Aug. 15.
Happy weekend!
Are faux cables okay? I’m looking at pyroclastic: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter09/PATTpyroclastic.php perhaps.
Sheri,
Would the Commuter Gloves from the new Knitty (http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEff11/PATTcommuter.php) qualify? I promise I’m not trying to look for exceptions to the “no fingerless” rule, but it’s like they’re full mittens, just not knit shut at the tip?
My pattern chosen – Ramble On by Angela Schwenn (see Ravelry site). In Wisconsin you can NEVER have too many warm mittens. I just placed my yarn order. I’m sure the elves will be busy after the 4th packing up orders. I actually get to go to my own “camp loopy”, a cabin in far Northern Wisconsin where I can sit on the porch and knit and watch the deer up close and bears (hopefullyfrom a distance) so will be knitting this project there – perfect timing – I arrive there the 14th and can start knitting the 15th. π
I’m in…I’ll be knitting Diamonds and Cables from MadTosh Tosh Sock. I had not used any Madeline Tosh until I started Camp Loopy Project 1. I’m loving the Merino light
I’m gonna knit cabled mittens — my own design — from MadTosh DK. π
Woohoo!!! Cabled socks it is! Out of Sheri’s suggestions I’m leaning towards BFF or Twisted Celtic Cable socks. I’d love to do one of Wendy’s designs, but since I only do top-down socks the patterns wouldn’t work out right, and I’m too lazy to figure them out. Now I just need to finish my Project 1, Whippoorwill, and figure out what yarn to use for Project 2.
I’m in and will be making Meicigama Socks with LL Whitewater. I will be travelling for work the 15th – 18th but will be sure to have time in the evenings to begin working on these!
LOVE cables and will be making Rococo gloves..yay…need to popst my picture of project one that has been done for 5 days now, lol…Can’t wait for project three…this is fun!!
I am in!!! I have never finished an adult sock before, so this will be a huge challenge to me! I am thinking of doing something in multi-colours as the ribs in plain wool look kind of dull to me. I will probably be sorry…. But thanks for the challenge! It should be a real “hoot”! Greetings to all you Loopys in Canada and USA. Enjoy your holidays! We will be celebrating the 4th here with a hot dog night as I am an expat American with an Aussie family! It will be cold and raining on Monday but we will still have sparklers and sing the Star Spankled Banner… Cheerio Loopys! Have fun with this leg of the camp!
