Knitting Groups and a CONTEST!

Last night was our late-night shopping hours evening. We’re open later the first Thursday of each month. Some Thursday nights are crazy busy, and other nights are calm and laid back. Last night, we had a great group of knitters pop over from Illinois to hang out, shop, and knit. In that group there were experienced knitters and brand new knitters, which is always fun. Some of them were just learning to knit socks and were being encouraged and instructed by the more experienced knitters in their group.

But the unique thing about this group? Some of them were the very first in-person shoppers to visit The Loopy Ewe. Here’s a photo of their first trip, back when Loopy was just a teeny tiny corner of shelves in my basement. They could stand in the middle of it and reach any shelf and any skein of yarn. (I’m not exaggerating.) The thing is, I think they had just as much fun on that first visit as they did on this visit (and all of their visits in between). It doesn’t matter how many shelves of yarn you have – just getting knitting friends and yarn together pretty much guarantees that fun will follow.

I made up a couple of extra Spring Fling Goodie Bags, just so I could share them with you in a blog contest! This year’s bag was a clear vinyl tote with shoulder straps, that came with a yellow-checked Loopy Ewe Mug, a sample of hand lotion, a Loopy sticky note set, and a skein of Wollmeise in a variety of colorways. Would you like to win one? Just leave us a comment below and answer this question: How many years have you been knitting? We’ll draw for the Goodie Bag winners next week.

  1. The years tend to blend together. Maybe six years after picking up again after a hiatus from knitting as a kid.

  2. 7 years now, and I wish it was longer because there is so much stuff I could have knitted already had I started earlier 😉

  3. I first learned 20 years ago, but sort of re-learned 4 years ago and haven’t stopped since then (:

  4. I’ve only been knitting for 2 years, though I’ve been spinning for nearly 4 and crocheting for 5. I think I went about this in an unusual manner:-)

  5. I have been knitting for 5 years and just can’t seem to not knit. My knitting goes with me EVERYWHERE!!!!! Love it and Loopy Ewe!

  6. I’ve been knitting off and on for 49 years. I learned during a brief stint in a boarding school from others who were knitting to stay sane and learned more from a family friend. I only knit one or two projects a year when I was raising my daughter but picked it back up with a vengeance 5 years ago.

  7. I learned crochet when I was a child, over 30 years ago. I really learned to knit correctly about 5 years ago and fell head over heels in love!

  8. I’ve been knitting for 4 years now! My friend taught me how to knit a pair of socks for my daughter, and I’ve never stopped since. Love the Loopy Ewe!

  9. My babysitter taught me when I was little. I wasn’t interested then. I picked it up again 5 years ago and haven’t stopped since

  10. I’ve been knitting for 9 years now – I learned to knit when my SIL was pregnant – so I could make a really soft blanket for the baby (which ended up being a blanket, hat and sweater set! I was hooked!)

  11. I tried to teach myself off and on for a couple of years before with just a lot of frustration. But once it clicked now it’s been about 3 and a half years of obsession!

  12. I have been knitting or 8 years now. I taught myself how to knit left-handed when I saw one of the silly fun fur scarfs. I never knew there was such amazing yarns out there far different from I had found in my local store that just carry the basic. If it weren’t for Ravelry I would have never found you guys at The Loopy Ewe! Thank heavens I did.

  13. I have been knitting since my youngest child was born and he is 23 years old! Knitting kept me sane as I raised him and his sister 🙂

  14. I was just talking about that the other day with the lady who taught me to knit. We were thinking it was about 7 years that I’ve been knitting but neither of us could remember exactly. I thought it was more like 5, but she thought it was more like ten, so we settled on 7!

  15. About 4 years now, and still loving it. This is a hobby I don’t ever see being done with.

  16. I’ve been knitting for about 4 years now. My grandmother tried to teach me to crochet when was younger, but it never stuck.

  17. I’ve been knitting for almost 40 years! I learned when I was almost 10. My best friend had to stay inside at recess because she was getting over a cold and her mom didn’t want her going outside. She picked up 2 pencils and some twine, and proceeded to show me what she had just learned in 4H. I tried it, thought it was fun, and when I got home I proudly showed my mom my new talent. We then went to the local dime store, and bought some multi-colored Red Heart yarn, some needles, and the green Coats & Clark “Learn to Knit” book. I’ve been knitting ever since, and have definitely graduated to better yarn & needles since then:)

  18. Over 60 years off and on as my Aunt taught me when I was very young, like about 3 or 4. Thagt makes me as old as dirt!!!

  19. I learned to knit almost 30 years ago while I was at Iowa State. My roomie’s mom taught us over a weekend and then I kept up with it off and on over the years. I made more things for my girls when they were little and then rediscovered knitting a few years ago.

  20. I’ve been knitting for about 2 1/2 years (the same amount of time I’ve been with my husband!)

  21. I have been knitting for 3 years:) My best friend’s mother taught me. She tells everyone she created a monster!

  22. I taught myself to knit about 42 years ago from a great book, The Right Way to Knit: A Manual for Basic Knitting by Evelyn Stiles Stewart. I still have it and occasionally refer to it. I have always loved knitting and when my mom was alive, she knitted all the time.

  23. I learned when I was around 5 when my grandma taught me and we made doll clothes for an entire summer. Talk about instant gratification when knitting for barbies. Knit through high school. Then took a break for 15 years and picked it back up again when I had kids only to become obsessed.

  24. I learned to knit just three years ago. Our church started a knitting group. The lady that taught me some of the basics passed away just six months after the group started. She was an excellent teacher and loved crafts. Our group at church continues but numbErs have dropped. Knitting is such a great wind down time for me after a day of work and sitting at high school baseball games for my son. Love your blog and website.

  25. Please, please, please let me win:) I have been knitting for 7 years…like a demon! My mother taught me how to cast on, knit, purl and bind off when I was young…but alas, she never taught me how to knit a project. Once I learned, it was all down hill!

  26. I’ve been knitting 5 years now! It’s funny how I started out with big box store yarn and now my tastes have changed dramatically!

  27. I’ve been knitting for about 7 years. I watched my mom knit my whole life and resisted being taught. Towards the end of her life, much to her amusement, I picked up the needles and was instantly addicted! It remains my connection to her!

  28. I made a lopey sweater back in junior high when they were all the rage, didn’t touch anything for about 15 years, attempted to finish a project – any project! – gave up. Then about 5 years ago, picked it up again. Have been going “guns blazing” ever since!

  29. I guess almost all of my life, I am 69 and started when my Mom taught me at the age of 5.

  30. I learned to knit when I was a teenager but never really fell in love with it until 2 years ago. I have several projects going in different locations of the house. LOVE IT!!
I’ve heard all about your shop from my friend Stephanie. I live in Massachusetts but follow your news on FB. Someday I’ll pay you a visit and hopefully indulge in all your beautiful yarn.

  31. I have been knitting for 1yr and a half!! I’m very proud of that half!! Mother-in-law taught! Yikes!!

  32. I think I’m around 30 years, give or take, though with some significant breaks. Love your shop!

  33. I learned when I was younger and knit for a year or so then it slid away for awhile. I picked it up again about 8 years ago and now I can’t imagine not knitting almost daily.

  34. Technically, I learned to probably 40 years ago. But my first FO was only about 20 years ago and I only started knitting on a daily basis (and developing a stash of yarn) about 3 years ago.
