Knitting Groups and a CONTEST!

Last night was our late-night shopping hours evening. We’re open later the first Thursday of each month. Some Thursday nights are crazy busy, and other nights are calm and laid back. Last night, we had a great group of knitters pop over from Illinois to hang out, shop, and knit. In that group there were experienced knitters and brand new knitters, which is always fun. Some of them were just learning to knit socks and were being encouraged and instructed by the more experienced knitters in their group.

But the unique thing about this group? Some of them were the very first in-person shoppers to visit The Loopy Ewe. Here’s a photo of their first trip, back when Loopy was just a teeny tiny corner of shelves in my basement. They could stand in the middle of it and reach any shelf and any skein of yarn. (I’m not exaggerating.) The thing is, I think they had just as much fun on that first visit as they did on this visit (and all of their visits in between). It doesn’t matter how many shelves of yarn you have – just getting knitting friends and yarn together pretty much guarantees that fun will follow.

I made up a couple of extra Spring Fling Goodie Bags, just so I could share them with you in a blog contest! This year’s bag was a clear vinyl tote with shoulder straps, that came with a yellow-checked Loopy Ewe Mug, a sample of hand lotion, a Loopy sticky note set, and a skein of Wollmeise in a variety of colorways. Would you like to win one? Just leave us a comment below and answer this question: How many years have you been knitting? We’ll draw for the Goodie Bag winners next week.

  1. I was taught to knit by my mother in 1955, when I was in the 1st grade, but home from school for 2 weeks with the chicken pox (back then, they made you stay out that long!). I guess Mom was trying to keep me busy, or keep me from driving her crazy! She was a knitter and passed it on to me. I’ve been knitting for 56 years.

  2. Learned to knit when I was 8 years old 38 years ago! I learned at GIrls Club. One of my grandmothers knit and I was always fascinated watching her do it. I think she lives on through me with my knitting.

  3. OH MY GOD, I think these are the most replies I’ve seen! How awesome is that! I’ve been knitting for 4 years and I am so obsessed and addicted.

  4. I’ve been knitting for 3.5 years and I crochet for 39 years!! (since 1972) I love knowing both. 🙂

  5. I was a self taught knitter right out of.high school but never got very good at it. Fast forward to almost 17 years later and my youngest daughter gave me a beginning class at my LYS. Did I mention that I never got very good at it? That was almost 9 years ago and now I make all my socks. So, I’ve been knitting 9 years or 26 years – your choice.

  6. ahh! I don’t even have a full year of knitting in and it’s a complete obsession! my hubby thinks I bumped my head or something but I love it! wait till he see’s me start spinning too! being a fiber addict is a full time job!

  7. I learned to knit 30 years ago – but quit for awhile while I was working and raising little kids, and it just wasn’t in the starts. So I guess I’ve been knitting for a net 20 years! I won’t stop until arthritis makes me!

  8. I’ve been knitting about 20 years off and on, I guess. That seems longer than possible…

  9. I’ve been knitting for 15 years now. It was sure a lot harder to find nice yarns and needles back then!

  10. Learned to knit in 3rd grade, age 8, when the teachers decided to teach the girls how to knit while the boys were doing a woodworking project. Seems that girls weren’t allowed to pick up hammers and saws back then, at least at my school. Didn’t do much with the knitting until 9th grade, when I took an elective class called “home arts”, of which knitting was one of them. Then didn’t do any serious knitting until about 5 years later, when I saw a sweater pattern I fell in love with and decided to make even though it had cables and lace, both of which I had never attempted. Turned out fine, and I haven’t looked back (oh, and I’m 50 now).

  11. I’ve been knitting for 10 years, but I’ve known how to knit for 40 years. When I learned in college, I knit only one scarf and moved on to another craft. I didn’t pick up the needles again until 2001 and have been knitting ever since!

  12. I have been knitting 11 years. My girlfriend dragged me to her knitting class & I still show up there for lessons and girl time. For the first couple years my husband kept asking what I was making in my “sewing” class. He is now used to yarn in almost every room of the house.

  13. Well, my sister taught me when I was little, about 6 or 7, so that would make it at least 45 years. Second time today I felt old!

  14. I learned in high school. The nuns wanted to keep our hands busy! Now, I am retired and still enjoying it.

  15. That is an amazing prize!

I’ve been knitting for umm… *runs to check Ravelry* about 4 years now. I started in January 2007 and that summer I made the Ribs and Lace Tank from Interweave Knits Spring 2007.

  16. I’ve been knitting for 18 years. I started when I was about 9, taught by my teacher, and my first project was a few afghan squares for a afghan for my teacher’s mother who was in a nursing home. Picked up steam in college, found socks, and its been LOVE:-)

  17. I taught myself to crochet in 2001 when I quit smoking to keep my hands busy. 3 years later, someone I worked with was having a baby, and I wanted to make this cute knit sweater I had found a pattern for, so I taught myself to knit. So, what’s that.. 7 years?? I have loved every minute of it!!!

  18. I have been knitting since 2005. My mother (who taught me to knit) has been knitting, crocheting and all kinds of crafty things since she was a girl, but I was not into making anything, especially when you can just buy it at the store for so much less. Anyway, she had been attempting to teach me for years but I guess I just wasnt ready until my son was born and a few years later we realized that he had autism. Since then, I couldnt keep myself together or sane with everything going on in my life with Zachary and my mother suggested knitting and this time and it finally clicked. It is so soothing. She said that I am a natural. I can only assume it is because I watched her knit for all of those years and it just became a part of me. 🙂 Now I can’t live without it. By the way, Happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms and all of the caregivers.

  19. I have been knitting 9 glorious years! (not that those 9 years equals any kind of skill level 😉

  20. Wow, thanks for this opportunity….I’ve been knitting since 6th grade, so for 47 years now.

  21. I first taught myself to knit from a book about 10 years ago, but gave it up quickly. I picked it back up about 2 years ago- found much nicer yarn and needles, and have been loving it and knitting almost daily since! 🙂

  22. I taught myself after I graduated college in 2001, so that would be just about 10 years. Wow… time really flies.

  23. I’ve been knitting since I was 7, but I started knitting regularly within the last 6 years.

  24. As a child my mother did macrame and my grandmother embroidered but both were too difficult for me as a child, so I never learned either one. I started knitting in 2007 because DD was going to be learning as part of her Waldorf school’s 1st grade curriculum. I love how with just two stitches you can make so very many beautiful things.

DD still knits and has gone one to learn crochet, sewing and embroidery. While I haven’t followed, we still knit together. It’s a great feeling when a fashion conscious pre-teen begs, admires and appreciates her handknits. Her teacher and friends ask “Did your mom knit that?” with such awe and she loves to answer “Of course!”

  25. I learned a very, very long time ago from my dutch oma despite the language barrier. It’s only in the last 2 years that I’ve come back to it and enjoy it very much…

  26. I have been knitting for just over 20 years. I learned to knit when I didn’t have room to put up my loom but had a ton of my handspun to use!

  27. I’ve been knitting for 2 years. Tried before that but it didn’t stick, now I can’t stop!

  28. Learn to knit 6years ago thanks to my friend she tought me the basic
didnt know i would love it n still be knitting today. For yrars i wanted to
learn but there wasnt anyone to teach me.

  29. My mom has just started knitting again after setting it down for more than 30 years, and I’ve been dropping hints that I’d like some socks. 🙂 I’m a crocheter, and crocheted socks just aren’t the same.

  30. I’ve been knitting on and off for 10 years, with a lapse before that of about 25 years since grandma showed me how.

  31. Knitting for about 10 years, but sock knitting like crazy for about the last 3 years!

  32. I have been knitting for almost 5 years now. But I’ve been crocheting much longer. It wasn’t until I started knitting that I realized there was actually such a thing as a store….and they sold JUST YARN! I’ve never looked back.
