Knitting Groups and a CONTEST!

Last night was our late-night shopping hours evening. We’re open later the first Thursday of each month. Some Thursday nights are crazy busy, and other nights are calm and laid back. Last night, we had a great group of knitters pop over from Illinois to hang out, shop, and knit. In that group there were experienced knitters and brand new knitters, which is always fun. Some of them were just learning to knit socks and were being encouraged and instructed by the more experienced knitters in their group.

But the unique thing about this group? Some of them were the very first in-person shoppers to visit The Loopy Ewe. Here’s a photo of their first trip, back when Loopy was just a teeny tiny corner of shelves in my basement. They could stand in the middle of it and reach any shelf and any skein of yarn. (I’m not exaggerating.) The thing is, I think they had just as much fun on that first visit as they did on this visit (and all of their visits in between). It doesn’t matter how many shelves of yarn you have – just getting knitting friends and yarn together pretty much guarantees that fun will follow.

I made up a couple of extra Spring Fling Goodie Bags, just so I could share them with you in a blog contest! This year’s bag was a clear vinyl tote with shoulder straps, that came with a yellow-checked Loopy Ewe Mug, a sample of hand lotion, a Loopy sticky note set, and a skein of Wollmeise in a variety of colorways. Would you like to win one? Just leave us a comment below and answer this question: How many years have you been knitting? We’ll draw for the Goodie Bag winners next week.

  1. I have been knitting for 25 years. I learned as a newly wed and my hubby was busy in Dental School!

  2. Gosh, I’ve been knitting for 7 years now. I think that’s right. I can’t imagine a time when I wasn’t knitting.

  3. I have been knitting since 2000. I am self taught. I checked out a book at the library and bought a, “I Taught Myself Knitting” kit and a skein of cheap yarn. I sat on my bed and kept trying to do it until I got it right. I will never forget how awkward it felt to hold TWO needles, with NO HOOKS, to try to make something. I remember telling my husband that I wasn’t sure I could learn how to knit. Ha, ha, now I can’t stop knitting!

  4. I’ve been knitting for about 22 years. My mother taught me when she opened a yarn store and needed help. I already knew how to crochet. Miss the store but I’m still knitting!!

  5. fun! i’m a relative newbie – been knitting since jan 2009 (so just under 2.5 years). and oh how i love it.

  6. I guess about 3 years now? I wanted to learn how to knit socks and am addicted to them now!

  7. My mother taught me when my youngest sister was born…maybe to keep me out of her hair? So….44 years.

  8. I’ve been knitting seriously for about 5 years. My grandma taught me when I was younger but it didn’t stick! 🙂

  9. I have been knitting for 58 years. I was 7 years old when i made my first sweater. I have been in love with fiber and knitting ever since.

  10. It’ll be 11 years in the fall. Since that first class, rarely has a day gone by that I haven’t had needles in my hands.

  11. I’ve been knitting for a little over 2 years. I took a class to learn at my LYS two years ago in February and it’s been a whirl wind ever since! I’ve definitely learned a lot in the past 2 years!!

  12. Hmm, I think since 2005, so six years. I have accumulated enough stash for many, many moons to come, but there’s always room for more!

  13. I’ve been knitting seriously for about 7 years, but went through a period during my 20s where I knit for 10 years and also learned to spin, so about 17 years total.

  14. When I was 8 years old I was diagnosed with rheumatic fever and bedridden for the entire spring and summer. My grandma saw that as an opportunity to teach me how to knit so I would have something to do with my time. She knew it was hard for me to look out the window and see the neighbor kids playing and I couldn’t join in the fun. She was so patient with me, taking the time to show me the importance of gauge, tension and how to fix mistakes (which were many). That was almost 50 years ago and while she is with the Lord now, every time I pick up my needles I think of her smiling face and encouraging words. Thank you Gram 🙂

  15. Been knitting for 31 years now…doesn’t actually seem all that long! LOL! Oh well, that’s life.

  16. I have been knitting for 6 or 7 years self taught on a snow day! My hubby still uses that first piece of practice knitting-a garter stitch scarf made from cheap yarn and LOVES IT! He was also the recipient of my first pair of socks. He seems to get all the firsts… Knitting is definitely about putting the love in what you’re making!

  17. I have been knitting for almost 50 years. It doesn’t seem that it has been that long. I will say that I enjoy it more each year. I love dragging others into the fold and do so at every given opportunity.

  18. I am so hoping to go to the spring fling next year! Heard so much good about it.
Learned to knit about 50+ years ago from my grandmother.

  19. I’ve been knitting since 5th grade…so…. 32 years. My mom taught me the basics and I took it from there.

  20. I began knitting my own mittens when I was 8 years old. That would be, oh my gosh, 46 years ago.

  21. I have been happily knitting for 5 years!!! I look forward to knitting many, many more years!

I have taught both daughters, and am currently teaching my Brownie Troop and two of the moms that help me with the troop!!

    I LOVE knitting!!!!!

  22. I remember when you were first opening and your yarn store was such an inspiration to me. When I finally opened my own indie dyer space I vowed to remember all the wonderful customer service experiences I had with the Loopy Ewe and most of all how FAST my orders arrived. You are wonderful and still my favorite yarn store.

  23. I’ve been knitting for about 4 years now, and very few days slip by without a few rows knit.

  24. My grandmother taught me how to knit when I was a kid but the skill fell away. I started knitting again when I learned that I would finally be able to escape the hot, humid life in Houston and move someplace where knit goods were good things to have (Colorado). I’ve been back to knitting for over five years now and it’s rare to see me without a knitting bag in hand or attached to a belt loop.

  25. I’ve been knitting for over 30 years! I learned from a German teacher in High School the continental way. It is my therapy!

  26. I’ve been knitting for 40+ years. I moved away from the big city and lost touch with my network of knitting friends. Now I have discovered the wonderful online network of knitters and I am knitting more than ever and have amassed a rather nice stash by shopping online.

  27. I’ve been knitting for three and a half years, spinning for one, but crocheting off and on for about 20.

  28. I learned to knit in high school, but only knit flat things and only about one each decade. In spring of 2010 a friend started knitting and I got caught up. Decided it was time for something other than flat knitting and jumped into patterns with both feet. It’s been a slippery slope into a room full of stash yarn and way too much OTN at a time! Enjoying every minute of the knitting experience.

  29. Oh my gosh – I’ve been knitting for 50 years! I started when I was 5 – my wonderful older sister taught me. Little did she know…

  30. I have been knitting for roughly 6 years now! I can hardly believe it. I have even graduated to teaching classes at the LYS!

  31. I have been knitting since the age of 9. That was 49 years ago. My aunt taught me how to knit. I’ve become a much better knitter in the last several yrs thanks to 2 knitting groups to which I belong. Now I’ve branched out into spinning and weaving too. I love knitting and The Loopy Ewe!

  32. I have been knitting (real knitting, not just rectangles for a little over 2 years now. I am working on my 4th sweater, 3rd pair of socks and 2nd shawl. And I;m about to start on my 3rd shawl. And I’m into spinning now too. Got my Lady Bug from you all.

  33. I have been knitting for 25 years (OMG!!!!) – I learned for a role in a school play in high school – the knitting stuck much better than the acting.

  34. Knitting….seems like forever….but most probably I’ve been knitting for maybe 4 years? 25 pairs of socks ago? 1 unfinished cardigan ago?

It does help me pass the time away!!!
