The Official Loopy Ewe Dictionary

Since we’re doing questions this week, we figured that we might as well give you the Loopy Dictionary, too. We tend to use abbreviations and made-up terms for things around here, and sometimes people will email and say, “What does FPS mean?” or “What exactly is a Sneak Up?”  So here’s the official Loopy List. (How many did you already know?)

* FPS – Figs, Plums and Sausages? Fox, Pig and Squirrel? Fun Peppermint Sweets? Finicky Popcorn Snarfers?  No, actually it means For Pete’s Sake.  As in, “I ordered decaf and they gave me caffeine, FPS!” or “I need more time in my day for knitting, FPS.” It started long ago when I left a note for Susan (Loopy Office Manager) about something that we had to do. I can’t remember what it was, but I knew it was something that neither of us wanted to do, so I wrote “FPS” on the bottom.  After about 15 minutes, she said, “OK, I give up.  What in the heck does FPS mean??” Now we use it a lot.  It’s so fitting in so many situations.  And if things are really bad, we might use:

* FCOL – For Crying Out Loud, or:

* OFTLOH – Oh For The Love of Herb (I have no clue who Herb is. Susan started that one.)

* LC – Loopy Central.  No matter where The Loopy Ewe is located, it’s always known as LC. (Not to be confused with OC, which is in CA.) It was LC when we started in one room in the basement, and it has continued to be LC now that we have our own space and continue to watch it grow.  LC is the heart of all things Loopy.

* LG – Loopy Groupie.  And, oh, we love our Loopy Groupies.  In fact, we want to welcome a whole bunch more of them into the group – see below.

* Loopified – When someone places the order that makes them a LG (their sixth package from us), then we say “Loopify them!”  If you’re an official LG, then consider yourself Loopified.

* Heads Up – One of the perks of being Loopified is the LG Heads Up email that goes out when new things go up on the website most weeks.

* Loopy Rolling – This is when y’all crash the website from overuse.  It’s pretty much a thing of the past, now that we have upgraded servers a few times. (We love our current server.)  But it was a sad sad time when Loopy went Feet Up.

* Sneak Up – That’s our term for when new things go up on the website.  We do some re-stocks during the week, but typically once a week we put a whole batch of things up at once.  In the beginning, we used to tell people exactly when it was going to happen, so they could plan for it. (“Monday Night at 9 pm Central”) We soon discovered that so many people were hopping online at the very same time in anticipation of this, that this caused Loopy Rolling more than once. We decided that we wouldn’t be able to announce a time any more, and instead we’d “sneak things up” sometime during the week and let people discover them gradually as they checked in and clicked on “What’s New”. People started referring to this as the “Sneak Up” for short.  It’s not a “clever marketing ploy”, or “hype” – it’s simply the term for putting new things up, in a way that works best with our system and provides the best service for you. (And truthfully, if you’re a regular around here, you’ve been able to figure out that we typically do these earlier in the week, you’ve probably figured out which two days are most likely to give you a Sneak Up, and you know that we vary the time a bit, depending on when we get done with our end of it.  It’s not a big secret.  But keeping it a bit loose like this still helps keep the website standing upright and the term has stuck!) Regarding a Sneak Up for next week? The Cascade photos have us all backlogged. (And you ought to see some of the wonderful things that arrived this week. Shoot!) We’re not sure if we’ll do one next week, or wait and get it all up the week after.  We’ll see how photos go and will keep you posted.

* Elves – The wonderful gals who work here at LC. Our friend James popped in way back when we just had a couple of Elves, and commented on how busy the “Loopy Elves” were, running around and pulling orders while he was there to shop.  The name seemed appropriate.  They work hard and they’re the best, and they’ve been “The Loopy Elves” ever since.

*F5 – That’s the button that you can use on a PC to refresh your system. (Like when you’re waiting for the Sneak Up to go up and you are watching the “What’s New” section.) Back in March, Beth from VA posted a question on the Loopy Groupie board on Ravelry, asking if anyone thought the Sneak Up would be that night. This started a thread that is now one of the longest running threads on Ravelry (135,000+ posts) and has morphed into “Loopy’s F5 Lounge”.  We think of it as our Loopy Groupie Chat Room, as you can pretty much pop in there any time of the day and find LG’s to talk to and hang out with. (And they’re a very welcoming bunch.) Come join our Ravelry Loopy Groupie board if you haven’t already!

And back to the Loopy Groupies – we’d like to welcome this new batch of LG’s, who have now received their 6th package from us (and, ahem, some have gone way past #6 already). We love and appreciate all of you!

We have put money in your Loopy accounts. Enjoy!

And last but not least, a big Happy Birthday (tomorrow) to WH.   🙂

  1. I’m the first. My big plans this weekend are my Office picnic at a local park and knitting. Hope the rain holds off this Monday!

Have a nice weekend Sheri and the Elves.

  2. You might be able to keep up with orders if you do two Sneak-ups as opposed to waiting for the following week. But, I probably underestimate your stamina. If you put up with all the racket of getting the new space ready, you are probably able to handle it ; )

I will going to a gender bender party, and waiting to hear if my sister and cousins make it out of Texas safely this weekend.

    Happy celebrating this weekend.

  3. My last long training run (20 miles) for my first marathon, and of course, some knitting. BTW, Loopy is adorable but he is in need of some socks. Do you know what size he wears? I would be glad to knit him a pair. 🙂

  4. Happy Birthday to WH! Hope you both have a fun weekend and eat lots of yummy cake.
My WH and I will be at a soccer tournament with one of our daughters all weekend. I try to knit during the games, but often get too carried away cheering, so we’ll see. Plus, It’s supposed to rain all weekend, so my hands may be occupied holding up the umbrella!
Your dictionary kind of made me feel like an old-timer, since I’ve been around for the inauguration of pretty well all of those terms, I think, and remembering the beginning of the sneak-ups, and Loopy rolling over, for example, make me feel kind of nostalgic. I have to remember that it’s only been two years since Loopy began!

  5. Happy birthday to WH, do you think that your kids will come home? Another question I can’t seem to get photos to load for the KAL any suggestions? I am most likely the problem. I need to be cleaning the house, the pool, etc, etc! Had to laugh I also remember when loopy rolled over!

  6. Happy Birthday to WH!!

My weekend will be spent at the cabin – 2 dinner parties to host (!) but will have lots of knitting time sitting out on the deck (well, as long as the wasps are gone) and patiently waiting for my special German sock club order to get here!!!

  7. Hi, it’s “Beth from VA”! First of all, Happy Birthday to WH! Secondly, thanks so much for the mention you gave us Ravelry F5ers today. We have a good time and really love having new chatters drop by and join in the fun.

My weekend plans consist of finishing a hat for the patient of a fellow F5er who has lost all her hair due to cancer treatment. I’m using some beautiful DIC Classy purchased from, where else, TLE!!!

    Enjoy the yummy birthday cake!

  8. Happy, happy birthday to WH! 🙂

My weekend? Watching my 5 year old as he starts playing soccer. And trying to keep the baby from following him.

  9. What’s in store for my weekend?

2.5 days (at the Lake) where the only things I need to think about are what to eat, knit, sew, read or watch on TV.

I can’t even begin to describe how much I need that mental down-time.

  10. Happy birthday to WH. Thanks for all the wonderful things you do for us.

What am I doing this weekend? Plans just changed in view of hurricane/gasoline situation. I was going to fiber festival about 50 miles away but I’ll now be conserving gasoline and staying home. After all I can buy yarn/fiber from TLE and have it delivered without using my gas.. So I’ll sleep in and knit/spin in the morning and early afternoon then attend family reunion at nearby recreation area. Sunday is our first Fiber Artists Guild meeting.

So have a wonderful weekend celebrating WH’s birthday!

  11. I love the FCOL and OFTLOH..gotta remember those.

My future looks wet and dank this weeknd which gives me lots of knitting time, some good movie watching time, and lots of relaxation.

Happy Birthday to WH, and eat cake for me!

  12. Happy Birthday to WH!!!

DH made it out of Houston before Ike today so my weekend is looking great! Although, there’s an awful lot to do while he’s here and I better go get started on my chores for the day which include making the list for the weekend.

  13. Laundry!! The joys of DH owning a coffee shop – towels, aprons, chef jackets, etc. Then there is the usual stuff you generate over a week. WE are going out for dinner with a friend and her new SO who I need to meet(and approve). Sunday will be church and visiting my mother in the nursing home. At least I can knit while visiting.

September is a big month for us. Birthdays on the 9th, 23rd & 26th. DD/SIL wedding anniversary on the 30th and our 1st anniversary was on the 8th.

  14. hb (the hubby bunny) and i have an engagement party tomorrow and a charity dog walk for the local animal shelter on sunday. he has some carpentry projects at his grandmother’s house to do after the walk, but i’ll be staying home since i work nights and will need to get some pre-work shut-eye. also, his grandmother still is a little fuzzy on what vegetarian means–cream of chicken in the green beans, beef broth in the vegetable soup, etc. she’s a lovely lady, but it’s often easier to stay away….

  15. My weekend will be spent trying to keep son #1 amused while it’s too rainy/windy/trafficky to go anywhere. And knitting when I get a chance :-). I’m fixing to finish the heels on one pair of socks, and I’d like to get another pair past the gussets.

  16. Happy Birthday to WH!!!!

My weekend will consist of laundry, a knit afternoon, and a finished object that I started in June (I’m hoping by Sunday on that one) and volunteering at the kitchen. Oh, and a stop to the T-Mobile store for College Daughter (mine, not yours, lol). Not all in this order, but that’s what I plan on, but plans are meant to change too.

  17. A very happy birthday to WH. I hope to get some knitting done since it’s going
to rain all weekend here. I am halfway through with my baby blanket and have
started on a scarf and always have socks on my needles. In case, I didn’t mention
it, I’m going to be a great grandmother. Have to figure out how to use my F5.

  18. So what kind of yarn does WH get for his birthday? lol

This weekend….knitting class tomorrow (yeah!), then a trip to a special nursery (fall planting time) and Sunday a trip to the Puyallup Fair which is HUGE here in Western Washington. We have a final gift from Mother Nature with an almost perfect weekend forecast – sunny and warm (but not hot). Knitting weather returns with more rain during the week 😉

  19. Happy Birthday to WH! You probably just keep on getting wonderfuller!

I think I’m going to buy the yarn and cut it up for the kits this weekend. (I’m teaching a class on spiral beaded ornaments (knit covers for glass ornament balls).) And maybe get the beads, and start stringing them.

  20. Happy Birthday to WH! I hope he has a fantastic birthday!!! : )

A fairly low key weekend – I’m fighting some sinus issues, so I just want to keep it simple this weekend. And, I loved this post with the dictionary – super fun!

    Have a great weekend! : )

  21. HB, WH!

I’m anticipating three things this weekend for sure:

    1. Return of the Sunday Choir Mass (and I’m in the Choir, so here we go again!)
    2. Neighborhood block party, where I will get to meet all the neighbors who have changed in the past 15 or so years that I now don’t know at all (and am anticipating I won’t like many of them, but who knows, I may be pleasantly surprised)
    3. Puppy training. (We’re getting there.)

There will also likely be lots of laundry and house cleaning, and much coaxing of the puppy to go outside because it’s supposed to rain all weekend, and much placating of the cat, who won’t get much down-time from the dog. 🙂

  22. I saw my name in the loopified group and I was going to show my DH but then I thought nah…then I’ll have some ‘splainin’ to do. LOL! I’m just kidding! He never begrudges me anything that makes me happy and he gets lots of warm socks to boot! This weekend looks rainy so that means movies and knitting.

Happy birthday to WH! Eat lots of cake!

  23. What’s waiting for me this weekend? Hopefully spinning for my Rhinebeck sweater! I’ve got the wool, I’ve got the time, I’m just waiting for my new spindle to get here. 🙂

  24. Birthday cake or brownies are in my future since today is my birthday. I am hoping some knitting will happen this weekend and I should do some housework.

  25. I meant to post yesterday, FPS, that the Cascade wall looks great, especially the woodwork. How great is it to have such a talented hubby?! Congrats on your new space!

  26. Waiting to hear from my daughter who is on her way out of Houston, looking forward to some sock knitting, and waiting anxiously for the next Sneak Up.

Happy BD to your WH. Bring on the cake!

  27. You know, an unbirthday cake (or cupcakes) might be in order this weekend here too! That is, after we go to the zoo tomorrow. Yay zoo!

  28. I am doing a cleaning bee at my sons preschool and volunteering for the hockey training camp for the NHL. Let me say, I did see some St. Louis Blues Jerseys today, some Red Wings and some Dallas Stars. If only I could have a photo with Loopy and the players, but I am not able to ask for them to do photos!

    Happy Birthday, WH!!

  29. Happy birthday,WH! Buddy Bill’s younger son is having a birthday, so we’ll probably go take him out to eat. He’s close enough that we can go see him. I am finishing Bill’s Cobblestone sweater. I also plan to take my kids over to see the Extreme Home Makeover house being done here in Toledo.

  30. My husband’s birthday is Sunday so I have birthday cake in my future for this weekend too! … also, the grandbabies will be over for a visit. Double fun!!

  31. BIG weekend here in Portland, Oregon. I spent all day today at the Knit & Crochet show. Learned to knit backwards from Candace Eisner Srick. The shopping was great, but the highlight of the day for me was being stopped by Doris Chan herself, who admired my Cat’s Cradle topper, one of her lovely patterns. Doris is the Crochet Queen in my book and I just love her stuff, so meeting her was the highlight of my day. 🙂

Tomorrow I work all day, but it’s in an LYS, so not it’s not a bad thing. Tomorrow night, I work my other job, dealing blackjack for funny-money to a bunch of rugby players and families.

Sunday, it’s all day with Joan Schrouder learning about the construction of Faroese shawls.

Yep, this is a GREAT weekend! 🙂 Enjoy the birthday cake!

  32. I’m sooo excited! Tonight, our long-lost daughter is arriving home from being away since June! She moved to VA following graduating from Taylor, and this is her first time home for a brief visit, and attending a friend’s wedding and then back to VA on Sunday. (Whew!!) We’ll see her for a very brief time, but it will be worth every minute! We also have a surprise for her…her Grandma is here at our house for a brief visit as well! So, she’ll get a chance to see her, plus when we take her back to the airport on Sunday, we have a few more relatives meeting us there, which she doesn’t yet know about…so we’re having some fun…just looking forward to giving her a big hug!! 😀

  33. Happy Birthday to the WH.
Soon you will have to put a Loopified dictionalry into print.

Have a great weekend. I think it is supposed to rain all weekend here : (

  34. I agree with Monica. I think a Loopy dictionary for all would come in very handy.

The weekend is heating up out here in the OC… I guess after the farmers’ market and other erands a trip over to the beach for gelato will be needed tomorrow. We have too many things to do on Sunday for a second trip – darn! Oh well, there is always take out.

I hope your WH has a great birthday and enjoy your cake.

  35. Happy Birthday, WH!

Wow, that Wall of Cascade is something….

This is the last weekend before school starts here and I’m hoping to hit the home stretch on the laundry today and tomorrow (otherwise I don’t know what they’re going to wear for the first day of school), but I should be able to get back to my sock between loads!

  36. Happy Birthday, WH!

My weekend looks like its going to be pretty low key, yay!
Of course some cleaning, and there’s always laundry. It’s time to do the seasonal clothes shift (wash and put away summer; unpack and wash fall/winter clothes)= lots of laundry. The good news about lots of laundry is I can get some knitting time in as I’m waiting for a load to finish. Looks like I’m not the only one with laundry + knitting in mind!

  37. Many Happy birthday wishes to WH!

My plans for the weekend is to have some knitting time, wither it be quiet or crazy I want to finish the sleeve to my son’s sweater. Oh, and spin. I want to spin up the rest of the Sakina Needles’s in rhubarb I have. I can hardly wait to see how it plies! The excitement of it all!

  38. I LOVE your sweet acronyms… I love the clean expressions, and find that they are so much more funny, and soft on the ears. Keep up the good work!

    Happy Birthday WH!!

I am sittin’ and knittin’ this weekend…

Have a great weekend!! Have a slice of cake for me..

  39. Happy birthday, WH! It is my WH’s b-day too!! The B I G 50! : 0 Sadly, there will be no cake (cake’s just not his thing), but there will be key lime pie (his absolute favorite)!

And if a big 5-0 b-day wasn’t enough, the mail man delivered a very special sock club package to me today all the way from Germany (you know what that means, don’t you?). So, you know what I’m doin’ this weekend. ; )

  40. Apparently placing my 6th order was in my future this weekend (just a bit after midnight Friday, actually). Woohoo!!! A few hours late to make the list this post, but I’ll be there next time! =) Getting my next spindle might actually be in my future, too.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY WH!!!!!!!! I hope it’s better than all the ones before. =)

  41. We are doing something very exciting!!! My daughter had her baby last Thursday so we are going in to spoil him rotten tomorrow (in the torrential rain of course). Penni has found a job for her Dad to work on while Bama gets to spoil little Max. Sofia was terribly disappointed he’s a Max & not a Sadie but as soon as she saw the video of him crying she was hooked. She might see him for the first time tomorrow. How fun is that going to be!! Look out Sheri now mom & I will be coming in with 2 babies (I guess Sofia’s not a baby anymore huh?)

  42. Hope WH had a GREAT birthday. I’ve been knitting a pair of socks this weekend. The normal/hang out at home weekend…… So what kind of cake did you have?? 🙂

  43. Happy Belated Birthday, WH! 🙂 Thank you for all your help with The Loopy Ewe! I love your yarn & accessories photos. (Our family has a number of September birthdays, too.)

  44. Yum, cake! I made cake this weekend, but I have leftover frosting. I want to make sugar cookie sandwiches (two sugar cookies with frosting in the middle), but part of me thinks that might be too much sugar…

I’m just waiting for more of the bamboo sock yarn to come in. My MIL has pretty specific requirements!
